Abel Ferrara’s Padre Pio, Steve Buscemi’s The Listener and rising UK director Georgia Oakley’s Blue Jean are among the world premieres in this year’s Giornate degli Autori (GdA) , the independent sidebar of the Venice Film Festival (August 31 - September 10).

Lebanese director Wissam Charaf’s Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous will open the programme in competition. The film entwines multiple love stories against the backdrop of Lebanon’s near collapse.

Abel Ferrara’s “Padre Pio,” starring Shia Labeouf as an Italian monk who gained rock-star status among the Catholic faithful, is among the titles set to launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Giornate Degli Autori.

The section, also known as Venice Days, will see Labeouf back on the big screen after the actor — best known for his roles in the Transformers and Indiana Jones franchises — took a break from acting in 2020 following allegations made by his ex-girlfriend Tahliah Debrett Barnett. The singer, known as FKA twigs, sued the actor for sexual battery, assault and emotional distress.

It is not yet known whether Labeouf will be on the Lido to promote “Padre Pio.”

In the latest film by Ferrara, who is known for cult classics such as “Bad Lieutenant,” Labeouf puts in what Giornate chief Gaia Furrer called an “extraordinary” performance as the “mystic and feverish” Capuchin monk...

Italian director and producer Roberto De Paolis, whose 2017 debut “Pure Hearts” launched from Cannes, is stepping up activity of his Young Films shingle and has completed his follow-up feature, “Princess,” about a young African woman who’s a victim of the sex trade.

Described by De Paolis as “the unfiltered story of a young Nigerian who prostitutes herself in Ostia, outside Rome, in a seaside pine forest,” “Princess” (first look image above) features Glory Kevin, a real victim of the sex trade, in the title role plus other non-professional actors with similar backgrounds. Rounding out the cast are Lino Musella (“The Young Pope”), Salvatore Striano (“Caesar Must Die”) and Maurizio Lombardi (“The New Pope”).

The film, which is produced by Young Films and Indigo Film (“The Great Beauty”) with Rai Cinema, is “an attempt to discover the complexity of the inner conflicts that run through the protagonist,” said De Paolis,...

Moments before the Toronto Int. Film Festival makes their first wave announcement of 70 plus titles, Venice Days (which several in the industry equate to Venice’s answer to Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight) have announced their line-up of twelve competing films with a slew of special screenings. Among the familiar items we find a pair from Sundance in John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings and Cherien Dabis’ May In The Summer seemingly receiving their international premieres. The North American strong section also includes the world preems in Bruce Labruce’s Montreal-shot (see pic above) Gerontophilia, Sean Gullette’s (expanded short into feature length film) Traitors, and the India-Canadian co-production of Richie Mehta’s Siddharth (the tale of a chain-wallah who travels across India in search of his missing son) which on papers comes across as a more potent version of fantasy film Slumdog Millionaire. Rome -- The World Premiere of Christopher Honore's "Man at Bath", and the international premieres of "Karamay," a 356-minute political documentary from Chinese director Xu Xin and Aaron Katz's mystery story "Cold Weather" will be among the highlights of the 20-film main competition at the 63rd edition of the Locarno Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.

Wednesday's announcement also revealed the lineup for the festival's famous Piazza Grande venue, which will include the European premiere of Jay and Mark Duplass' comedy "Cyrus" -- John C. Reilly, the film's star, will be on hand to receive a special tribute -- Gareth Edwards' science fiction drama "Monsters," and "Gadkii Utenok" (The Ugly Duckling) from first-time Russian director Garri Bardine.

The picturesque Piazza Grande, which seats more than 8,000, is the largest outdoor film venue in Europe.

Rome -- The world premiere of Daniele Gagliacone's drama "Pietro" and Canadian Bruce La Bruce's "L.A. Zombie" are the early highlights of from the international competition lineup at this year's Locarno Film festival, organizers said Wednesday.

"Pietro" is the third full-length feature from Gagliacone, who burst onto the Italian film scene six years ago after winning the award for a first feature in Venice for "Nemmeno il destino" (Changing Destiny). It will be Gagliacone's second appearance in Locarno, following the out of competition screening of his documentary "Rata Nece Biti" (There Will Not Be the War) in 2008.

The international screening of "L.A. Zombie" will represent the first trip to the lakeside Swiss festival for the provocative La Bruce, who is also a noted photographer and underground pornography figure.

ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands -- Movies from Russia, Spain and Italy each took home a Tiger award at close Saturday night of this year's Rotterdam International Film Festival. The festival's competition jury, including American photographer Nan Goldin, awarded Russia's Ilya Khrzhanovsky's 4, Italy's Daniele Gaglianone's Nemmeno Il Destiono (Changing Destiny) and Spain's documentarian Mercedes Alvarez's El Cielo Gira (The Sky Turns) a Tiger apiece. In addition to the cash purse, each winner's film will air on Dutch public television network VPRO. Festival director Sandra den Hamer said the 34th edition had been a success. Attendance rose slightly -- to an all-time high for the event -- to 358,000 admissions, up 3,000 from last year. The number of overseas guests also rose 150 to 2,586.
