Star Trek: Voyager Reportedly Wanted to Give The Doctor a Name That Sounds Horribly Bad

Played by Robert Picardo, the character is depicted as an AI hologram who is in charge of medical emergencies aboard the USS Voyager. One of the running gags of the show was that The Doctor did not have a name. Many names were assigned to the character during the show but none of them were revealed to be his actual name. However, an early draft of an episode reportedly almost christened him as Doctor Smokes, but avoided it after rewrites.

Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Picardo Begrudgingly Auditioned For The Doctor
Image
Prior to his seven-year stint on "Star Trek: Voyager," Robert Picardo had a lengthy and storied acting career. He was a Joe Dante regular, appearing in "The Howling," "The Explorers," "Innerspace," "The 'Burbs," "Matinee," and "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." He appeared in "Star 80," Ridley Scott's "Legend," the zombie cop film "Dead Heat," and Robert Englund's directorial debut "976-evil." This was all mixed in with plentiful TV work and multiple appearances on stage. Picardo has never been not busy, most recently appearing on a 2024 episode of "Young Sheldon."

Had Picardo never taken the "Star Trek" gig, he still would not have been hurting for work. "Voyager" just happened to be a sizable feather in his cap. "Voyager" simply boosted the actor's visibility and gained him legions of Trekkie fans. On "Voyager," Picardo played the U.S.S. Voyager's nameless Doctor, an Emergency Medical Hologram that had to...

This BBC Miniseries Is One of 2023's Wildest Thrillers
Image
Dark comedy, or comedy-horror, is one of British television's strong points. Misfits, Snuff Box, Jam, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace ... there are many a gem to have crawled out of the twisted and brilliant minds behind British late-night TV that make audiences question whether they should be appalled or enthralled by the Island's unique brand of gallows humor. It's no surprise then, that 2023 brought us a grizzly psychological thriller in the form of Wolf: a shining example of that quintessentially British tone that falls between horrifying and hilarious. Created by Megan Gallagher and adapted from the novel of the same name by author Mo Hayder, Wolf touts an impressive cast that includes both Iwan Rheon and Owen Teale of Game of Thrones fame. If you're looking for a darkly humorous, twisted, and grizzly thriller that coats itself in constant homages to classic horror, Wolf is likely right up your alley. The only problem is that,...

Rtl this morning said it is making progress on Fremantle’s growth plan, following four acquisitions in the past year including, most recently, the purchase of 70% of respected Italian producer Lux Vide, along with 12 Nent Group production labels. Fremantle put 81 drama productions into production across the year and scored hits with the likes of Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-nominated Hand of God for Netflix. The previous year saw a big drop in returns due to the impact of the Coronavirus. The outfit, which has just struck a talent deal with Angelina Jolie, is targeting €3Bn returns by 2025. Overall, Rtl’s revenue was up 10.3% to €6.6Bn, with adjusted...

New documentary Millennium After the Millennium looks back at Chris Carter’s beloved series and mulls its future potential

“Aliens and Near Dark star Lance Henriksen plays an ex-fbi agent who peers inside the minds of criminals and works for a sinister organization, all wrapped up in a viciously gory and supernatural bow” ...if you found out this was a brand new show about to materialize on TV this year, you’d get excited, so it’s easy to see why fans of Chris Carter’s dark-as-hell late-90s series Millennium still miss it so much.

Millennium, which ran for three seasons on Fox between 1996 and 1999 before being canceled as ratings dwindled, was a project aimed at letting the creator of The X-Files truly scare himself (and us) during an era when he was objectively at the height of his success, and the series welcomed a huge...

Marvel Fans Demanding To Know Where Korg Is After Those Avengers: Endgame Posters
Yesterday, Marvel released a ton of new Avengers: Endgame character posters that exhibited an array of heroes expected to feature in next month’s release, while also remembering some of the figures who’ve passed away in recent McU history. We even received confirmation that Valkyrie will feature in the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, but to the disappointment of some fans, one of Tessa Thompson’s most beloved Thor: Ragnarok co-stars was nowhere to be seen.

Last year’s Infinity War had by far the highest body count of any Marvel movie to date, but one character whose fate was left up in the air was Taika Waititi’s Korg. By the time the film opened, the soft-spoken warrior had either escaped Thanos’ attack on Thor’s ship or been among the Mad Titan’s victims, and we’ve yet to find out which. So when it became clear that...

King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen
Tfh Fearless Leader Joe Dante very astutely tip-toes around Larry Cohen’s stylistic filmmaking identity early on in King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen. Dante notes, “I would hardly call him the John Cassavetes of exploitation movies, but he does have a certain raw, visceral, realistic style.” Indeed, Larry Cohen’s signature film, Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), feels like what would happen if John Cassavetes directed a Ray Harryhausen film. And movie fans the world over are all the better for that most unlikely of authorial fusions!

For cineastes in La, King Cohen debuts Friday, July 20th, at Laemmle’s Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre. There will be supplemental shows on the 23rd at the NoHo 7, and the Laemmle Monica on the 26th. It will expand to other select markets on July 27th (keep a sharp eye on the flick’s official site for further screening details). The...
