“One again it’s up to Frank Gallagher to save the neighborhood.”

At several points season 11 of Shameless has reminded me of Weeds’s messy final year. This is not a positive comparison, but Shameless’s “Slaughter” creates several parallels between these Showtime series and the dissolution of their central families. Weeds doesn’t end on a perfect note, but its finale at least attempts something deeply ambitious. Shameless is headed down similar territory with its characters, but it’s not a show that’s ever stylistically rocked the boat. This has led to a final season that has largely felt aimless, which is true to life sometimes, especially when the majority of a series’ characters are caught in ruts.

Most TV anti-heroes are often strong, alpha types that make even the most righteous of viewers drool with admiration. However, Frank Gallagher is quite the opposite. It's hard to find something to admire about the man. But despite him being despicable, he manages to remain a draw.

That's why he has been around for so long. With 11 seasons, Shameless is moving into territory mostly occupied by police procedurals, medical dramas, and reality shows. Numerous details and storylines have been packed into the seasons hence it's easy to miss a thing or two.

The TV scene has no shortage of weird characters but it's hard to find one that matches up to Frank Gallagher. The Shameless character has an endless list of sins and negative traits. He is selfish, mean, manipulative, irresponsible, lazy, and careless. The best part is that he doesn't seem to care. Frank enjoys being Frank.

Frank's endless conflicts with his numerous children also keep the series going. Despite his misdemeanors, Frank's story is so interesting that the series has remained on air for over a decade. A master schemer, the following are some of the craziest things Frank has done for his own benefit.

We don't have to worry about Shameless being cancelled by Showtime this time around. The cable channel already announced that the series would be ending back when it was renewed for an 11th season. Could the show be revived for season 12 someday, ala the upcoming Dexter revival? Stay tuned.

All good things must come to an end. All debauched things too. Which may explain how we’re here, staring at the Great Beyond for the Gallagher Brood of Shameless. Aye, two seasons after Emmy Rossum left the series as one of its ostensible lead characters, Fiona Gallagher, the series itself is resuming production and winding down in the age of Covid. Frank Gallagher has taken the anti-hero concept to a whole new level. The star of Shameless has just done so many selfish, objectively-bad things that it is a minor miracle someone hasn't just finished him off. And yet, he trudges on, like a mushroom that survives no matter what the conditions are.

Frank Gallagher does not discriminate when it comes to his wrongdoings either. It is one thing to be evil towards the ones who threaten your family or loved ones. It is another thing entirely to wrong the ones closest to you, like he often does. He might redeem himself on a few occasions, but the 10 worst things Frank Gallagher has ever done are a master class on how to be a bad human being.

Frank Gallagher from Shameless might just be the worst father in television history, certainly the drunkest. Within ten seasons, he’s done some pretty abhorrent and disgusting things, generally for his own selfish gain. The ones that end usually suffering the most, though, are his own children.

That being said, he’s fallen victim to their actions at times. To be fair, most of the things that happen to Frank at the hands of his kids are almost always justified. Here are just a few of the terrible things Frank has done to kids, as well as the worst things they did him in Shameless.

Watching Shameless is certainly a unique experience for the viewer. For some fans, witnessing the Gallaghers' outrageous dysfunction can make them feel better about their own lives. For others, the sheer lack of morality makes them sick. Either way, Frank Gallagher and Co. will certainly make you laugh, cry, and think, for Shameless has not made it through 10 seasons of wildly successful debauchery on the back of a few cheap gags.

The characters are what make Shameless. There are some interesting plot points, but for the most part, viewers tune in because of how, uh ... colorful, the cast is. This family and their associates feature a huge range of personalities, many of which can be categorized into the Hogwarts Houses from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Here are the main characters in Shameless, sorted into Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw.

For a show I wrote off during the first few episodes of the season, Shameless Season 10 Episode 12 managed to course correct the series in a way I didn't think possible. 

It was all thanks to Ian and Mickey's wedding. If you watch Shameless online, you know nothing brings the Gallaghers together like a wedding, and it was perfect. 

Ian and Mickey's relationship will forever be a big part of the show's DNA, and part of its success is in the way the couple has been written. 

There have been needless hurdles thrown at for them in the latter years, but the wedding was as perfect as they could have hoped for given the circumstances. 

Mickey's homophobic father being out to ruin the day was no surprise -- Mickey comes from a long line of men who married men, but none of them were romantically involved.

Shameless Season 10 Episode 6

“There’s no room for sentiment in business.”

This season of Shameless has jumped all over the place in terms of its storytelling. It’s now at the half-way point and while there have been definite growing pains for these characters, one of the common denominators this year is that the need for money is making these people do crazy things. This has been a sliding scale of craziness so far, but that’s now been pushed to an extreme place. I was nearly expecting Frank Gallagher to pop out of a closing iris at the end of the episode and declare, “Th-Th-Th-That’s all folks!”

Shameless season 10 has been a curious year that’s been full of changes, but as it nearly approaches its halfway point, “Sparky” feels like a particularly transitory episode. A number of new arcs begin in this entry and the second chapters of these characters’ seasonal stories begin to unfold.

This episode introduces plenty of new opportunities and problems for the Gallaghers, but through all of these changes the family remain largely cheerful and in check. When the creators reflect on the early success of Brassic, a frenetic British comedy that lit up the schedules of Sky, their minds turn to the man who started it all: actor Dominic West.

David Livingstone, the founder of Brassic producer Calamity Films, was making British indie film Pride when West approached him with an idea. During their time on set, West was dazzled by the wild stories of his co-star Joe Gilgun’s misadventures, and told Livingstone that he should consider bringing them to the screen.

The sh*tshow must go on! In the trailer for season 10 of Shameless, we see the Gallagher family functioning without Emmy Rossum's Fiona for the first time ever. Despite the family matriarch leaving the South Side of Chicago in the season nine finale, there's absolutely no lack of drama for Frank Gallagher's offspring.

Debbie has assumed the role of head of household, and it looks like she's filled her closet up with designer fashion, presumably with the money Fiona left her. Lip struggles with the duties of fatherhood, and Carl might have his own little Gallagher on the way. Cameron Monaghan and Noel Fisher return to the series as Ian Gallagher and Mickey Milkovich - aka Gallavich - as they navigate their complicated relationship in different, closer quarters in prison. As always, Frank's debauchery is at the center of it all.

It turns out that your favorite show is definitely going to be back in action for a brand new season 10 despite the fact that the leading lady Emmy Rossum aka Fiona Gallagher is leaving. According to the folks over at TV Line, the big announcement was made way back in January 2019 when season 9 had made it to only the midway point. Over the past nine seasons of Showtime's hit comedy-drama series Shameless, viewers have met and had to say goodbye to a very wide variety of dynamic characters from Chicago's South Side. Countless love interests, friends, and close acquaintances of Frank Gallagher and his children have come and gone, and while some of these character exits were welcomed or at least accepted by fans, a few memorable individuals definitely hurt the show when they were written off of it.

There are a variety of reasons why beloved characters may have disappeared from Shameless. Fiona and Ian's departures in the series' ninth season were likely due to Emmy Rossum and Cameron Monaghan's desire to pursue other projects after starring in over 100 episodes. Over the past nine seasons of Showtime's hit series Shameless, fans have watched as the Gallagher children tried to deal with the many difficulties of life in the South Side without any real help from their derelict single father. Frank Gallagher always chose to spend more time at the bar than raising his kids, so the bulk of the child-rearing responsibility was placed upon his daughter Fiona. Frank's twisted moral code and gift for using others to get what he wants has made him a terrible role model and father, but it's also somehow made him one of the most likable and entertaining characters on television.

Shameless viewers are often quick to criticize characters like Fiona and Ian for their poor relationship and life choices, but since Frank does questionable things every episode of the series, the show's audience has always been quick to accept and ignore his most glaring failings.

For a while last year, it looked like the Shameless TV show might be cancelled by Showtime. Eventually though, Emmy Rossum's contract was resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Although there was no such agita ahead of the ninth season, Rossum has announced this will be her final turn as fierce Fiona Gallagher. Does this mean the whole clan will pack it in, too? So Shameless got political tonight. Or at least more so than usual, as the congressional election for Chicago’s Southside was apparently held in roughly late May/early June (the school year still isn’t over), and Mo White went back to Congress and back to being the creepy pervert. This is America.

It’s a bleak message, but fitting for the show and perhaps fitting for our times as Mo White’s ascension is meant to parallel beat by beat Donald Trump’s surprise electoral college victory. And given the last week and likely destiny of our Supreme Court, the success of predatory white aggrievement seems inescapable. But why revel in the pessimism? Last week, we considered just exactly what kind of patrons the Alibi has when, despite being on the South Side, there is apparently not one non-white person present on V’s day off—or even after knowing Frank Gallagher for decades they’d still put bread in his jar and actually believe they were funding a real political campaign. It would seem the Shameless writers embraced this paradox head on in the “Weirdo Gallagher Vortex,” suggesting the Gallaghers aren’t the only weird ones on the series’ version of Chi-town’s inner-city.

Tonight it makes more sense that the Alibi’s clientele would unanimously chant “Mo White” (and not be referring the pedophilic politician’s name either) when we discover the Alibi is...

This summer William H. Macy received his 14th Emmy nomination overall and his 5th for Best Comedy Actor for his role as Frank Gallagher on “Shameless.” Macy has been nominated in a variety of categories spanning movies, miniseries, comedies and dramas for his various work on television over the last 20 years. He won two Emmys for the TV movie “Door to Door”: Best Movie/Mini Actor and Best Movie/Mini Writing.
