Stone Cold: Brian Bosworth action classic is coming to 4K!
Image
Craig R. Baxley started off working as a stuntman in the early 1970s, and just a few years later he started directing second unit on movies and TV shows. In the ’80s, he directed multiple episodes of The A-Team – and then it was time for him to make his feature directing debut… and with his first three features, he delivered three of the coolest action movies ever made: Action Jackson, I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel), and Stone Cold. We’re big fans of all of those films here at JoBlo, and when it comes to Stone Cold, Chris Bumbray has written a “Best Movie You Never Saw” article and video on the film and John Fallon has put it in the “Arrow Recommends” spotlight. Today, we have some good Stone Cold news to celebrate, as Kino Lorber – the company that gave the film a special edition...

A 24-Year-Old Forgotten Paranormal Police Procedural Remains Underrated
Image
Quick LinksWhy Special Unit 2 Was Special, But Not UniqueWhy Special Unit 2 Deserves a Second LookCould Special Unit 2 Work Today?

Somewhere between light and shadow, justice and obscuration, a forgotten police procedural remains underrated 24 years later. Police dramas have always been a staple of television, drawing audiences into the suspense as they play armchair detectives. Whether following an eccentric supersleuth, a mismatched duo, or a team of young investigators, it is usually the mystery that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. But what about the mysteries that defy natural history books, the things that lurk in the shadows beyond human understanding? Enter Special Unit 2, a paranormal procedural with more revelations than just what goes bump in the night, one that speaks volumes about the landscape of cop shows, supernatural serials, and early 2000s television.

Debuting on Upn in 2001, Special Unit 2 was an underrated sci-fi show...

Get the story of Jason Goes to Hell directly from the makers in the trailer for Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday
Image
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was a bonkers sequel that took the simple masked slasher movie franchise to new heights (or new depths?). The early 90s film that attempted to end the franchise was hated by critics and very divisive with fans. However, now you can get the full story of what the creative people were thinking as director Adam Marcus recalls being a bright-eyed, fresh-faced film student who was given the keys to the kingdom and didn’t exactly know what to do with the newly purchased property from New Line Cinema. The trailer for Hearts of Darkness: The Making of The Final Friday is now here.

Marcus has spoken directly with fans as he announced that the documentary is “almost 2 hours long.” The Blu-ray edition will feature “another 2 hours of goodness that we could not fit in a theatrical feature film! Oh yeah! We’ve got...

Finding Heaven in ‘Jason Goes to Hell’: Nine Reasons to Love the Final Friday
Image
Jason Goes To Hell was my entryway into the Friday the 13th franchise. A junior in high school, I’d recently fallen in love with Scream and overcome my childhood fear of slasher killers. My boyfriend suggested we watch one of his favorites: the 9th and purportedly “final” installment in the storied franchise. At the time I was in full agreement with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and had no interest in a formulaic film. “What’s the point,” I quoted, “they’re all the same.” But he assured me this one was special.

I begrudgingly pushed play and was hooked from the opening scene. While opinions vary wildly about Jason Goes to Hell, there’s no doubt director Adam Marcus is swinging for the fences. The plot is joyfully bananas and ends in a smorgasbord of murderous possession, decaying bodies, magic books, and minions from hell. But amidst the B-movie lunacy,...

Remembering Andre Braugher and Norman Lear: “Together They Could’ve Created a Hell of a Sitcom”
Image
It’s rare that you get to work with legends. Rarer still that they live up to the title. So how lucky am I to have worked with two such people? I’ve been thinking a lot about Norman Lear and Andre Braugher since their sudden passing, and the qualities they shared that made them both legends to me.

It wasn’t just their talent, which to be clear, they had mountains of. It’s that while they certainly appreciated the many deserved accolades that came their way, what they truly loved about show business was the work itself. The writing, the acting, their craft. Fame was just the thing that came with it. And if you were lucky enough to work with Norman or Andre, they also validated your love for the craft. It’s a virtuous circle that I can best express as “making your show business dreams come true.

This past Sunday, August 13th, marked the thirtieth anniversary of one of the most divisive entries in the Friday the 13th franchise, 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Watch It Here – OWN It Here). To mark the occasion, Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus took to social media to announce that an epic documentary on the film, Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday, is almost finished!

Marcus said, “The picture is locked. Our soundtrack is just days away from completion. It will only have to go through Color Timing next week, Sound Mix the week after and then has to be seen by our legal team (Larry Zerner in Jason’s house!) and then we’re done! I will, at that time, include all of you in what we are working on for our Distribution and Film Festival & Convention schedule. You are, after all,...

‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Series Finale: Why the Showrunner Left One Storyline Open
Image
This article contains spoilers for the “NCIS: Los Angeles” series finale.

“NCIS: Los Angeles” showrunner R. Scott Gemmill’s goal with the series finale on Sunday, May 21 was to give the characters of the long-running CBS procedural as happy an ending as possible.

“It really was about trying to find a way to wrap up the series that would leave the fans feeling hopeful for the future of all our characters. And so we gave everyone what we figured was their version of happily ever after… at least for the time being,” he told TheWrap in a recent interview.

To that end, in the final episode, Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Anna (Bar Paly) tie the knot in an impromptu ceremony attended by the rest of the team — except for Hetty (Linda Hunt), who sends a congratulatory note.

Anna (Bar Paly) and Callen (Chris O’Donnell) have an impromptu wedding on...

Every Rocky & Creed Movie Ranked From Worst to Best (Including Creed 3)
Image
Which is the best Rocky or Creed movie? With Creed III bringing the story full circle, the Rocky franchise now spans 9 films from 1976 to 2023 and ranking them is a reminder of just how incredible most of the entries have been. The release of Michael B Jordan's third Rocky spin-off continued the frankly incredible feat of there being a Rocky/Creed movie released every decade since 1976. That's the kind of longevity only matched by Sylvester Stallone's affable boxer in his extended career.

Initially the brainchild of Sylvester Stallone, the franchise was handed over to Michael B Jordan, after Ryan Coogler breathed new life into Rocky with Creed. And while Stallone stepped aside for Creed III in 2023, Philadelphia's most famous sporting icon will continue to cast his shadow over this movie series for as long as it continues. And judging by the continued success, there will be more to come from Jordan's heavyweight champion.

Why Sylvester Stallone Is Wrong, And Rocky V Is Good
Image
For nearly fifty years, the saga of Rocky Balboa has been one of the most enduring works of American fiction. The powerhouse first movie told the story of a boxing underdog who gets, and makes the most of, the chance of a lifetime, which dramatically paralleled the rags-to-riches story of the film's own writer and star, Sylvester Stallone, a no-name actor who built a blockbuster career out of "Rocky." It was practically legendary from the start, though its massive success was a double-edged sword.

Over the course of four sequels and a spin-off trilogy, Rocky Balboa proceeded to inspire generation after generation with satisfying stories about defying the odds, reclaiming your dignity, and that one time Rocky bought a robot. But there's one film in the series that most people, including Stallone, don't think was a success.

Actually, that's putting it far too mildly. Stallone has gone on record as...

Rocky and Creed Movies Ranked from Worst to Best
Image
It’s been nearly 50 years since a southpaw from Philly went the distance with Apollo Creed. Back then it was a genuinely euphoric moment in cinema, so feel-good that Rocky over-performed at the box office and Oscars, beating out flicks like Network and Taxi Driver for Best Picture, and making Sylvester Stallone one of the biggest movie stars of his generation. Yet even the most elated audiences could scarcely predict how long a tail Balboa’s left hook would have.

Forty-six years on, the legacy of Rocky and Apollo grows with nine films and counting, including six Rocky movies and three Creed films, the latter about Apollo’s son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan). And as time passed, many of the installments have become as synonymous with their eras as, well, Rocky is with the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Hence we here at Den of Geek have put...

Rocky V Ending Explained: The Home Team
Image
Has there ever been a franchise entry more of a cinematic buzzkill than "Rocky V?" I'm struggling to think of one. It's a dour affair compared to the goofy bombast of "Rocky IV" and is generally regarded as the worst film of the original series, but it does have some things going for it. Sylvester Stallone deserves credit for trying to do something different with this one, arresting the out-of-control trajectory of the first four movies by sending his most beloved character back to his roots. If he hadn't, the next logical step would have been for Rocky Balboa (Stallone) to face off against a terrifying alien warrior, but his arch-rival Arnold Schwarzenegger beat him to the punch on that one in "Predator."

Originally intended as the last part of the series, Stallone attempted to steer the Italian Stallion's saga back to the gritty drama of "Rocky." To that end,...

‘NCIS: LA’ Boss Teases ‘Top Gun’-Style Nail-Biter in Aiden-Focused Episode
Wilmer Valderrama, Rocky Carroll, Gary Cole, Katrina Law, Sean Murray, Brian Dietzen, and Diona Reasonover in NCIS (2003)
In Sunday’s NCIS: Los Angeles opening sequence, a thrilling Top Gun-style F-35 Navy training exercise turns into a nail-biter as a plane gets in trouble and the pilot ejects. Turns out it’s Special Agent Sam Hanna’s (LL Cool J) son! Aiden (Tye White) survives, much to the relief of his dad and grandfather, Raymond (Richard Gant). But “he gets his bell rung pretty hard,” says the drama’s executive producer R. Scott Gemmill. And the crash could be a career-ender: All signs point to pilot error. “Aiden has a reputation as a hot dog,” Gemmill adds. “He’s been reprimanded for his flight behavior.” With the NCIS team put in the awkward position of investigating the incident, Sam is barred from participating. Meanwhile, the trio of tough military Hannas grapple with what happened. “It’s a lot of stubbornness in one room,” Gemmill says. “There...

10 Slasher Movies To Watch If You Loved Halloween Ends
Image
Warning: The below article contains spoilers for "Halloween Ends."

"Halloween Ends" is finally here. Fans are already taking to their keyboards to debate their conflicting takes on what feels like the most divisive film entry in the franchise since "Halloween III: Season of the Witch." The film takes some big swings and plays with genre expectations, sidelining Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) to focus on his apprentice-copycat killer, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell). There are themes of evil infecting Corey and the town, and intriguing supernatural elements teased but left purposefully vague. Will this final chapter earn cult classic status over time or remain a source of fan outrage? Only time will tell. Whether you loved this movie or were disappointed and looking for something to hit the reset button, we've got ten killer slashers you should check out next.

‘NCIS: LA’ Episode 300 Will See Major Changes in the Agents’ Personal Lives
Image
Family matters more than ever in the 300th episode of the military crime drama NCIS: Los Angeles. Sure, the milestone offers up plenty of action — two men try to break into a base and are blown up by their own explosives — but it also delivers big changes in the agents’ personal lives. “Some are struggles, but they’re also heartfelt,” says R. Scott Gemmill, executive producer of the NCIS spinoff since its 2009 debut. The winner for “world most rocked” is Sam Hanna. The series introduces the onetime Navy Seal’s dad, Raymond, a former Marine suffering from Alzheimer’s. He can no longer live alone, so Sam sells his houseboat and the two move into a new home together. Sonja Flemming/CBS “They’re both very stubborn, prideful men,” Gemmill says. Raymond balks at house rules — no alcohol, for one — and “wants to know what happens when he brings ...

The episode, titled “Work & Family,” sees the NCIS team launch an investigation after two men are blown up by their own explosives while attempting to break into a military base. Richard Gant of “Rocky V” and “Men of a Certain Age” guest stars as Sam’s father, Raymond. Vyto Ruginis, who plays retired Kgb agent Arkady Kolcheck,...

Who knows, maybe he...
