Adrian García Bogliano’s Mórbido production “Talking to a Stranger,” starring Gigi Saul Guerrero, and the awaited “The Muglur,” set up at Paulina Villavicencio’s “Huesera” production house Disruptiva Films and Sound, feature among seven titles packing out the Cannes Film Festival’s Blood Window showcase, unspooling at its Marché du Film May 15.

Also making the cut are “Love Kills,” the latest from Brazil’s Luiza Shelling, a producer on Netflix hit “Yakuza Princess,” who won La Mayor Cine award at December’s Blood Window Screenings Awards where “Telkenchu” scooped Lahaye Media and Chemistry prizes.

Blood Window marks a new generation of Latin American and Spanish genre filmmakers. Four titles are first features, Shelling’s “Love Kills” just her second, “Black Water” director Santiago Ventura’s third.

As Argentina battles with inflation and pared-back governmental incentives, the selection underscores México’s suzerainty in Latin American horror producing four of the seven Blood Window’s movies.

Corazón Films has officially joined the production team for the highly anticipated horror feature “Talking to a Stranger” (“Hablando con Extraños”), a supernatural thriller directed by genre visionary Adrián García Bogliano and starring acclaimed filmmaker-turned-actress Gigi Saul Guerrero in her first leading role. Corazón will handle distribution and global sales for the feature.

Produced in collaboration with Mórbido Group and Guadalajara-based Prismaticoos Films, the film is being hailed as a powerful addition to the horror genre. The story follows Patricia (played by Guerrero), a grieving mother haunted by a supernatural entity after the tragic loss of her child in a fire. Shot entirely on location in Guadalajara, the film also benefits from Filma Jalisco’s efforts to position the region as a burgeoning hub for filmmaking in Mexico.

Apartment 7A Trailer: "Paramount+ today released the official trailer for the all-new psychological thriller Apartment 7A, available to stream exclusively on Paramount+ Friday, September 27 in the U.S. and Canada, Latin America and Brazil and on September 28 in the U.K., France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Australia. Titles from Caye Casas, whose jarring film “The Coffee Table” earned a nod from Stephen King, and a comeback project from former Eli Roth co-scribe Guillermo Amoedo (“The Inhabitant”), figure into a six-title slate for the fifth edition of the Santiago Int’l Film Festival’s Morbido Lab.

According to Sanfic co-founder Gabriela Sandoval, the competition was tight this year as the strand “had many more applications than in 2023.”

Morbido founder and CEO Pablo Guisa Koestinger will be on the ground to advise the talent, both established and budding, leading them towards full development and financing for their chilling projects. Very excited yesterday to see a teaser emerge for Mexican antholgoy series La hora marcada. The series is a relaunch of a show that ran in Mexico from 1988 through 1990. Described as a “hugely ambitious feature film slate,” El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, and Variety brings us the scoop this afternoon.

The Latin House of Horror will be dedicated to “channeling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre artists emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.”

A six-movie slate was announced out of Cannes this week. Mexico’s Sula Films will produce the series, with Film Factory Entertainment handling world sales.

Variety reports, “The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain.”

El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, a hugely ambitious feature film slate channelling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre directors – and indeed writers – emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.

The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain, El Estudio producer Enrique López Lavigne told Variety.

Mexico’s Sula Films, headed by Mexican producer Alejandro Sugich (“Los Hermanos Salvador”), will also produce the series. Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment is handling world sales.

Announced at Cannes, the House’s first slate of six movies features established talent such as Adrián García Bogliano, a founding figure of modern Argentine scarefare, now based out of Mexico; and Isaac Ezban, who rapidly established a reputation for films wrapped in hauntingly surreal scenarios: Think “The Incident” and “The Similars.

With or without us Morbido soldiers on. For the third year in a row we find ourselves very much missing our friends and family at Morbido. It is for the best as safety is one of the festival's priorities. Barring catastrophic circumstances we've been promised that we will be back at the festival in person next year. Quentin Dupieux awarded screenplay prize ex-aequo with himself for Smoking Causes Coughing and Incredible But True.

Finnish production Sisu directed by Jalmari Helander took the main award at the 55th edition of Sitges, marking the director’s second time winning the prestigious Catalan genre event’s best feature award after his 2010 selection Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.

Netflix and Redrum, producers of series “The Chosen One,” have issued statements on the Baja California road accident that killed two of their actors on Thursday. Two other cast members and four crew members were injured, but remain stable and have gone home to recover.

Yesterday Variety was the first to announce this year's lineup for Sanfic-Morbido Lab, the collaboration between Sanfic and Grupo Morbido to further genre cinema in Chile and South America.    The six selected projects will spend three days with Grupo Morbido's Pablo Guisa learning about development, promotion and exhibition. There they will be prepped to pitch in front of industry guests and experts at Sanfic Industria. They will also receive feedback from our friend, Adrian Garcia Bogliano.    In addition to the lab there will also be a series of public screenings for other genre films from around the world. Chile’s Sanfic Industria, the industry section of the Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic), and Grupo Morbido, the Mexican horror conglomerate, have unveiled details for the 2021 Sanfic-Morbido industry events unspooling in early November, as well as a special poster designed by Chilean-Ecuadorian artist Alberto Montt to mark the occasion.

In August 2019, Sanfic and Grupo Morbido announced a collaborative venture which would see Grupo Morbido founder and CEO Pablo Guisa attend and participate in a dedicated genre project section at the South American festival. Later that year, the first ever Sanfic Morbido Fest prize was awarded to Pilar Díaz, producer of Florencia Dupont’s “Aracne.”

Their arrangement was expanded upon in February 2020, when the two organizations embarked on a joint horror initiative to promote and grow the genre cinema industry in Chile and South America at large. Like so many best laid plans at that time, however, arrangements were thrown into upheaval by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some news earlier this week from our friends at FilmSharks in Buenos Aires. Deadline reported that the sales company locked in deals with Korean distributors for the Uruguayan spiritual rom-com Ghosting Gloria and for the Mexican horror flick Come Play With Me, directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano.  Ghosting Gloria had its world premiere at Fantasia this Summer. It was, cute, like if Rob Reiner directed Ghost. Come Play With Me premiered on home turf at Morbido and was quickly scooped up and made available on Amazon Prime here in the Americas.  FilmSharks has also sold the remake rights for Ghosting Gloria to Korea, the U.S. and Mexico. Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks has announced early sales on Mexican supernatural horror and Cannes Marché sales title Play With Me (Juega Conmigo) directed by Mexico-based genre ace Adrian Garcia Bogliano.

It has sold to Rocket Releasing for Russia/Cis, where it just opened, as well as to Av Jet for Taiwan, and Mocking Bird for Vietnam. Negotiations are ongoing for South Korea, Japan, Spain, France, and German-speaking Europe.

Nick Damici has been a familiar face in the horror genre for years now. Primarily working with writer/director Jim Mickle, on whose films he has also co-written, this gruff, large but still oddly charming presence has impressed before but he was never given a true lead part until this film. With Mickle uninvolved, although long-time cohort Larry Fessenden produces and pops up in a cameo role, Damici takes centre stage in Late Phases, a film with the wonderfully juicy premise of a blind ‘Nam veteran getting revenge on a werewolf after it kills his best friend.

It feels appropriate to base this review around Damici as he is the chugging motor which drives the film and the beating heart which actually makes you invest in it.

Exclusive: Frontieres, the industry initiative for genre film professionals, has named an 11-strong lineup for its 2020 Financing & Packaging Forum.

Frontieres runs three events throughout the year: the Forum, which this year will be held in Sweden in February, the Frontières Platform at the Marché du Film which is held during the Cannes festival in May, and finally the International Co-Production Market at Montreal’s Fantastia festival in July.

The year’s Forum relocates from Helsinki to Karlskrona, Sweden, and will run February 27-29. It is co-organized with The Carl International Film Festival and Nordic Factory, and marks the first collaboration between Frontieres, the Swedish Film Institute and Norwegian Film Institute, and a returning collaboration with the Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

Julio Hernández Cordón, one of Mexico’s most-awarded independent filmmakers over the last decade, has found the leading man for his next feature “The Day is Long and Dark (My Friends are Vampires),” in Fantastic Fest best actor winner Francisco Barreiro, star of Adrián García Bogliano’s “Here Comes the Devil.”.

Barreiro’s casting was shared with Variety from Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur Market where the project was pitched for the first time publicly at the event’s Proyecta sidebar for Latin American projects.

As the calendar changes from October to November, Mexican horror fans will ascend for the twelfth year on Morbido Fest, a Mexico City-based festival dedicated to all things macabre, organized and executed by Morbido Group CEO and founder Pablo Guisa Koestinger.

This year’s festival will kick off Oct. 30 with a spectacle grander in its ambition than any Morbido inauguration before. Taking place within the Esperanza Iris City theater, more than 60 artists will perform six choreographed musical numbers with Guisa taking the reigns as master of ceremonies. Those familiar with Guisa and his public persona won’t be surprised to hear that his opening night wardrobe alone includes eight costumes, with more to come in the following days.

Evil Games, when squinted at from afar, might resemble one of the Coen Brothers’ crime-driven dark comedies. The story – about a kidnapping gone right which goes terribly wrong only after the victim has safely returned home – is at least unconventional enough for the standards of Joel and Ethan. However, the premise is all the film’s got going for it, and not long into proceedings I was praying for a more capable filmmaker (or filmmakers) to wrest it from writer/director Adrián García Bogliano’s hands.

Exclusive: The hierarchy has broadened the remit of next month’s Fantastic Market, maintaining the event’s historically strong ties with Latin American projects while expanding into a forum that addresses global genre.

Organisers at Fantastic Market, set to run in Austin, Texas, from September 22-25, unveiled the initial slate of projects and announced that Elijah Wood and his SpectreVision co-founders Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller and CEO Lisa Whalen will be among the speakers.

An initially intriguing thriller setup leads to something quite honestly disturbing in Adrián García Bogliano's Scherzo Diabolico, now available to watch via various Video On Demand platforms (and on DVD, too!). Opening with helicopter-style overhead shots, following a car as it winds its way through a wooded region on a two-lane highway, rather like Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, the movie then cuts to Aram (Francisco Barreiro). He's driving alone, though when he eventually returns home we learn that, like Jack Torrance, he's struggling to get along with his wife (Milena Pezzi). Over the last few years, Adrián García Bogliano has quickly become one of my favorite independent filmmakers due to his work on projects like Cold Sweat, Penumbra, Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases (easily the best werewolf movie we’ve had since Dog Soldiers), as well as his latest film, Scherzo Diabolico, a pitch-black revenge/comedy hybrid that demonstrates ambition always comes with a hefty price tag, especially when kidnapping is involved.

Scherzo Diabolico was released this week by Dark Sky Films on DVD and VOD platforms everywhere, and in honor of its release, Daily Dead had the chance to catch up with Bogliano, as well as Francisco Barreiro, who stars in the film and previously collaborated with the director on Here Comes the Devil. After directing Late Phases, his English-language debut film, Adrián García Bogliano returned to Mexico to work again with Here Comes the Devil’s Francisco Barreiro. The result was Scherzo Diabolico, in which Barreiro portraits a middle aged man who -- while waiting for better circumstances at his work and also to put together his marriage -- will become the worst nightmare for a young girl (Daniela Soto), turning himself into an iconic masked psychopath. Happy May, readers! Hard to believe summer (and summer movie season) is right around the corner already, but here we are. The month is kicking off with a solid group of eclectic horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto Blu-ray, including two great films from Dark Sky Films: Emelie and Scherzo Diabolico.

This Tuesday, Scream Factory is bringing home the latest from Jim Wynorski, Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre, and for those of you looking to prep before the Independence Day sequel arrives in theaters this June, 20th Century Fox is releasing several new editions of the original film, including a badass Alien Attacker version.

Other notable releases for May 3rd include The Haunting of Alice D and Trailer Trauma 2: Drive-In Monsterama.

It looks like May will be a somewhat busy month in regards to horror and sci-fi VOD/Digital HD releases, as we have thirteen different titles arriving before Memorial Day. Dark Sky Films is kicking things off with Adrián García Bogliano’s Scherzo Diabolico, and for those of you wanting to check out the latest from Kane Hodder, The Haunting of Alice D arrives on all digital platforms the very same day.

Scream Factory is unleashing their latest film, Bite, on VOD on May 6th, and Regression, the mystery thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, is getting released on May 10th courtesy of Starz Digital. Also, one of my favorite films from the 2015 Los Angeles Film Fest, Crush the Skull, is being released on May 17th courtesy of Breaking Glass Pictures.

Scherzo Diabolico, when squinted at from afar, might resemble one of the Coen Brothers’ crime-driven dark comedies. The story – about a kidnapping gone right which goes terribly wrong only after the victim has safely returned home – is at least unconventional enough for the standards of Joel and Ethan. However, the premise is all the film’s got going for it, and not long into proceedings I was praying for a more capable filmmaker (or filmmakers) to wrest it from writer/director Adrián García Bogliano’s hands.

Fantasia International Film Festival has unveiled its full line-up for its upcoming 19th edition which kicks off next Tuesday [July 14].

Over its three-week run, the Montreal-based genre film festival will showcase 135 features, including 22 world, 13 international premieres and 21 North American premieres, and almost 300 short films.

Shinji Higuchi’s Attack on Titan will receive its Canadian premiere as the closing film of this year’s edition on Aug 4. The live-action film is based on Hajime Isyama’s steampunk fantasy war opera manga series.

Additional highlights of the final wave of titles include the world premieres of Malik Bader’s thriller Cash Only and Ken Ochiai’s Ninja the Monster, as well as the Canadian premiere of Jonathan Milott & Cary Murnion’s horror comedy Cooties starring Elijah Wood.

The 19th Annual Fantasia Film Festival is only a week away, beginning July 14 and running through August 4. And as promised for today, they’ve revealed their full line-up of films screening at 2015’s festival in Montreal.

This year’s line-up boasts 22 World Premieres, 13 International Premieres, and 21 North American Premieres. Both Marvel’s Ant-Man and the animated Miss Hokusai were previously announced, but now they’ve added the much anticipated Attack on Titan movie as their closing night film. Other highlights include the Sundance darlings Cooties, starring Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson, Cop Car, starring Kevin Bacon and directed by the upcoming Spider-man director Jon Watts, and a trio of films from horror auteur Sion Sono.

A little over one month away, the Fantasia Film Festival announced it’s second wave of titles this morning. Fantasia Film Festival holds a special place in the hearts of Sound on Sight and we could not be more excited for their upcoming edition which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Arguably the largest genre film festival in the world, Fantasia will run from July 14th to August 4th this year and feature a large number of world and international premieres.
