5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in April 2024
Image
New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.

The Uncanny (1977)

Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)

Directed by Denis Héroux.

The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

The Uncanny has a tendency to be one-note in...

Ventana Sur’s Blood Window Aims to Frighten at Cannes Film Market
Blood Window, Argentina’s most important Latin American genre film market, launched by Argentina’s Incaa film-tv agency as part of Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur meet-mart, will host a showcase of Ibero-American genre films and works in progress at the Cannes Festival Film Market, running May 17-20.

The showcase includes three screenings sponsored by three of the world’s leading genre festivals: the U.K.’s Fright Fest, Mexico’s Morbido Fest and the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.

Additionally, the Upcoming Fantastic Films section for Ibero-American works in progress facilitates representatives from eight nearly-finished films to screen clips and pitch to buyers, sales agents and representatives from other festivals from around the world. This year eight works in progress will present, up from seven last year.

The Argentine films participating in the works in progress pitches include Pablo Parés’ “I am Toxic,” a post-apocalyptic tale in a world torn asunder by biological warfare.

A New Generation of Women Filmmakers on the Rise in Catalonia
Laureled abroad and lauded at home, a young generation of women Catalan filmmakers started breaking through two years ago, led by Carla Simon’s 2017 Berlin first-feature winner “Summer 93.” Since then a bevy of female directors have emerged, making intimate character-driven dramas rich in observational psychological detail, some drawn from personal experience.

The ranks of women Catalan helmers have swelled substantially with, in various states of production, Clara Roquet’s “Libertad,” Belén Funes’ “A Thief’s Daughter,” Ángeles Hernández ’s “Isaac,” Lucía Alemany’s “Innocence” and Pilar Palomero’s “Girls.”

“It’s remarkable the impact that so-called small films have had on festival circuits,” says Roquet, whose “Libertad” won the Arte Kino Intl. Prize at San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin American Co-Production Forum in September.

Many, like Simón, whose “Alcarrás” was a Berlinale Co-Production Market winner in February, are onto their second or even third feature.

Wide World of Horror: ‘Penumbra’
Penumbra

Written by Adrián & Ramiro García Bogliano

Directed by Adrián & Ramiro García Bogliano

Argentina, 2011

Is it possible to become invested in a character that is so easy to loathe? That is the question put forth by Penumbra, and it is the question that will probably determine whether or not most viewers will enjoy the film. It’s not necessary to like the protagonist of a film, but to become invested in a horror heroine is almost a prerequisite of the genre. They scream, they run, they fear for their lives and the viewer cheers for them. There’s a certain amount of joy to be gained from the hapless heroine overcoming the odds that are against her. She need not be dainty, not does she need to be a saint. But, what the horror heroine must be is someone who the audience is so willing to root for that they...

The highly respected Franco Burattini handles the special effects work.

Review: Penumbra, Suspense From a Solar Eclipse and a Superior Attitude
[Penumbra opens in limited release in the U.S. tomorrow and will also be available widely via various VOD platforms. Here's my review from Fantastic Fest last fall.] No movie is set unintentionally on the day of a solar eclipse, and that includes Penumbra, the new movie from Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano. Like Cold Sweat, their immediate predecessor, Penumbra takes place in and around an aging apartment building in Buenos Aires, Argentina. But the similarities end there (except for a little "oil on woman" action). Maragarita Sanchez (Cristina Brondo) is a high-powered business woman from Spain. She is dressed sharply as she paces on a sidewalk, speaking expressively to her sister via cell phone. Margarita is not particularly happy to be spending time in...

Penumbra (2011): The Perception That Shapes Madness
This might mark the first time I’ve watched an Argentinian horror picture. Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano are certainly no rookies to film or to the genre having produced quite a few shorts and another genre picture, Cold Sweat. IFC is advertising this as movie in the shape of a Roman Polanski movie which is specifically a nod to his apartment trilogy. Given the subject matter of Penumbra I can see why they might do that, but I urge you to consider that this is not Repulsion. It is not Rosemary’s Baby. It is not The Tenant. The disorientation is its own and not being a fan of two out of three of Polanski’s apartment trilogy, you may want to separate it from that group for that reason as well (as if anything I said means anything).

Penumbra Trailer: Solar Eclipse Creates Tension in an Argentine Apartment
As I wrote when it screened at Fantastic Fest, "no movie is set unintentionally on the day of a solar eclipse, and that includes Penumbra, the new movie from Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano. High-powered Margarita Sanchez travels from Spain to deal with business in South America, but she's none too happy to be there, since she considers Buenos Aires to be a cesspool, making its residents rats -- or something worse. Before she flees home, she wastes precious time trying to rent her family's old apartment. As the minutes stretch into...

U.S. Trailer for Argentinian Horror Penumbra
IFC Midnight is bringing Argentinian directors Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano’s latest, “Penumbra” to select Stateside theaters (i.e. it’s probably not coming anywhere near you, sorry) and on video on demand (via iTunes, SundanceNOW, Amazon Streaming and Xbox Zune) this April 20th, 2012. The distributor actually snapped up the film for North America last year during Fantastic Fest. Until then, check out the new U.S. trailer for the slow burn horror film, which takes place during a solar eclipse. Strangers + solar eclipse = watch out! If the name Bogliano sounds familiar, the duo also gave us “Cold Sweat” in 2010. Combining stylistic elements of classic Polanski with a contemporary vision that rivals anyone working in horror today, the Bogliano brothers’ Penumbra is a superbly realized South American horror slow-burner. Marga is a highly motivated, arrogant and successful businesswoman on assignment in Buenos Aires — a city she hates and whose people she loathes.

While in the Argentina capital on a day the whole population is waiting to view a rare solar eclipse she must also find a new tenant for her family’s decrepit apartment. Rapidly losing her patience waiting for one applicant she runs into the mysterious Jorge lurking outside the front door of the place who informs her that he has a client willing to pay four times what she is asking in rent. There’s one catch — the paperwork must be signed immediately. SXSW 2011 Review: Cold Sweat
Rating: 4/5

Writers: Adrián García Bogliano, Ramiro García Bogliano, Hernán Moyano

Director: Adrián García Bogliano

Cast: Facundo Espinosa, Marina Glezer, Camila Velasco, Omar Musa

There is a moment in Cold Sweat where the stakes are raised exponentially in a matter of seconds. This comes shortly after a minimal and effectively mysterious setup and just before one of the best death scenes committed to film in some time. The rest of the movie is a series of game changing moments peppered with genuinely funny bits, horror-tinged action sequences, and nearly-unbreabale suspense. Combined with inspired direction, these elements make Cold Sweat best described as a “psuedo-arthouse horror-action-comedy music video”.

SXSW Midnight Features and Short Programs Announced
Ben Wheatley in Down Terrace (2009)
The film program at South By Southwest (SXSW) has really come into its own over the past few years -- SXSW is becoming an impressive little film fest in addition to being a massive music party. The lineups for Midnight features and shorts have been announced, and there are some good premieres in there. Attack the Block, from Joe Cornish, will have a world premiere, while Hobo With a Shotgun and James Wan's Insidious will show up as well. And the films that most of us haven't heard of sound pretty great, too. If I was at the fest I'd have my ass planted in a seat for every one of these at midnight. Screw the parties -- the crazy genre films are the way to go. The fill list of features is after the break. The shorts program is massive, and you can find it at the SXSW website [1].
