Global Bulletin: Antonio Banderas to Host Spanish Academy Goya Awards in Malaga
Image
Antonio Banderas is set to host the 2021 Spanish Academy Goya Awards on Feb. 27 in Banderas’ hometown of Malaga. It is the actor’s first time hosting the awards, and he will share duties with María Casado, one of Spain’s most respected television journalists and president of the Television Academy.

Banderas, among Spain’s best-known cinematic exports for decades, has five Spanish Academy nominations and an Honorary Goya of his own. But it was only this year that the actor finally took home a trophy for his work in Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory,” a performance which also won him best actor at Cannes and an Oscar nomination.

According to the Academy, there are plans to limit audience capacity and impose strict health and safety measures based on expert recommendations at the time the ceremony is held. Banderas’ production company Teatro Soho TV will help produce the ceremony which...

Banijay’s Dlo/Magnolia Unveils High-Profile TV Drama Slate (Exclusive)
Spanish production house Dlo/Magnolia, owned by the giant Banijay Group, has revealed an ambitious TV drama slate, led by psychological thriller series “La Caza. Monteperdido,” a TV adaptation of Agustín Martínez’s best-selling novel “Monteperdido.”

Filming in the Aragonese Pyrenees, the eight-episode, 70-minute high-concept TV drama is scheduled to premiere on Rtve’s flagship channel La 1 in first quarter of 2019.

Under managing director José Manuel Lorenzo, Dlo/Magnolia is upping the ante on TV fiction, underscoring the Banijay Group’s aim of building its scripted offering in Spain, as the superindie continues acquiring production assets to increase its TV drama footprint worldwide.

“After many years focused on TV entertainment, Banijay is betting very seriously on TV fiction. As a traveling companion, I could not find a better one, they help you get the projects moving forward,” Lorenzo said.

“Monteperdido” marks the first step in this new era at Dlo/Magnolia,...

Spanish Buyer/ Seller Event: Who's Buying?
Madrid de Cine Spanish Film Screenings (4th edition) were held June 7, 8, and 9. This international showcase's objective is to create a unique business space where international buyers, Spanish producers, sales companies and international media have the opportunity to see the latest releases of Spanish Cinema as well as the chance to interview Spanish film directors, actors and producers.

There is an industrybeyond the familiar names of Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar.

"It was very important that Isabel Coixet whose "Map of the Sounds of Tokyo" was in Competition at Cannes," said Beatriz Setuain of Imagina Sales, which will screen its thriller "25 Karats." "That generates more interest in the industry from abroad and we can show how international and varied our productions are." (A note here by Sydney: I saw "Map of the Sounds of Tokyo in Cannes. It is a hauntingly sexy cross cultural story...I especially liked the sex scenes...

Pedro Almodóvar
Spanish cinema to show off its wares
Pedro Almodóvar
Madrid -- The message Spanish cinema is pushing about itself these days is that there is an industry beyond the familiar names of Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar. And as the Madrid de Cine Spanish Film Screenings kick off Sunday, the industry is looking to show buyers there's more to Spanish cinema than its two favorite sons.

"It was very important that Isabel Coixet was in Competition at Cannes," said Beatriz Setuain of Imagina Sales, which will screen its thriller "25 Karats." "That generates more interest in the industry from abroad and we can show how international and varied our productions are."

Organized by Spain's Producers Federation, Fapae, this year's screenings will showcase more than 50 recent Spanish productions to 132 buyers from 31 countries, including 11 confirmed acquisition executives from the U.S.

Sellers agree that while they would prefer the dates to be somewhere in winter, coming straight after Cannes has its benefits.
