Chicago – The premiere of a documentary feature, “(C)answers: The Answer to Cancer” will take place this Saturday, July 31st, 2021, at the Gene Siskel Film Center and through online virtual cinema. Directed by Breht Gardner, the film takes us inside one young man’s emotional cancer battle and exposes the provocative truth about cannabis prohibition, where race, politics and the business of medicine powerfully intersect. The evening will feature the screening of the film and an panel to break it down afterwards (live at the Siskel Center and accessible virtual/online), and includes a host committee with Chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Senior Advisor to Governor J.B. Pritzker Toi Hutchinson, and State Representatives Kelly Cassidy, Jehan Gordon Booth, and Bob Morgan.

Newly launched streaming platform Bet Plus is debuting its first new original unscripted series, “American Gangster: Trap Queens,” an inside look at the lives of some of the country’s most notorious female gangsters, Variety has learned exclusively. Narrated by rapper and actor Jeezy, the first five episodes of the two-part series — an adaptation of “American Gangster” — are now available on the service.

“Bet is excited to bring “American Gangster: Trap Queens” to Bet+,” said Bet’s head of unscripted programming Marisa Levy. “We’ve reimagined this long running series by letting women take center stage. Each episode features one of America’s most successful and notorious female criminal masterminds recounting her cautionary tale. Given the success of the original long running American Gangster television series, we hope ‘Trap Queens’ will become a fresh fan favorite in the true crime genre as well.”

Longtime television director Rob Schiller is making his feature directorial debut on the indie Cabrini Gardens. Darryl Taja is producing via his Epidemic Pictures. The romantic comedy centers on a single mother who works as a paralegal at a prestigious law firm. She ends up falling for the firm's rising star while at the same time falling into a case involving a snobby homeowners' association. The screenplay was written by Taja, David Odom and Breht Gardner. Odom is executive producing and financing the film, and Gardner is co-producer. Filming is expected to begin late next month in Chicago. No cast has been set yet.
