'The Purge' Franchise Is Alive as Creator Announces New Film Is in the Works
Image
The multi-picture horror thriller franchise known as The Purge is set to return sooner than you can shut your windows and arm your house against maniacs. James DeMonaco, franchise producer and creator, has officially confirmed that he has written a sixth entry in the dystopian universe, and not only that, but he has included the return of a fan-favorite character. It's time to start speculating about who it could be, though we have our fingers crossed that it's the badass action hero played by Frank Grillo, a.k.a. Leo Barnes.

DeMonaco is currently promoting his next film, The Home, the psychological horror feature starring Pete Davidson and John Glover set to be released in theaters on July 25. The director of the first three Purge films and writer of all the movies in the franchise spoke to Bloody Disgusting while promoting The Home, and spilled the beans about a future sequel to The Purge.

New Disney Pixar Movie Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score - But Where Does It Rank Among The Classics?
Image
Pixar is a renowned animation studio known for revolutionizing animated movies with groundbreaking technology, along with stories that blend humor and emotion for young audiences and adults. The first Pixar movie was Toy Story in 1995, the first fully computer-animated feature. The studio followed that up by creating more animated classics like A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars. After being acquired by Disney in 2006, Pixar continued producing hits, such as Ratatouille, Wall-e, Up, Inside Out, and many more.

However, in recent years, Pixar has experienced a series of disappointments. After Onward underperformed at the box office due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were all sent straight to streaming on Disney+. Lightyear was the first Pixar movie to be released in theaters since Onward, and became a big box-office bomb. However, after Elemental became a sleeper hit, Inside Out 2 went on to...

Brazil Wins Big at 40th Guadalajara Film Festival: Anna Muylaert’s ‘The Best Mother in the World,’ Gabriel Mascaro’s ‘The Blue Trail’ Take Major Honors
Image
Mexico’s most prominent film festival, the Guadalajara International Film Festival (Ficg) lived up to its renown, scoring massive attendance for its milestone 40th edition, which wrapped June 14.

Led by festival director Estrella Araiza, the annual film event in Mexico’s second largest city reported 29,599 screening admissions, 7,209 participants in masterclasses and panels, and 1,473 accredited guests and industry professionals. Its inauguration fiesta alone, which featured live music and Lucha Libre, is said to have lured up to 3,500 attendees.

With the new genre cinema sidebar this year, won by Germán Tejada’s “The Innocents,” the festival marked 10 competitive sections. The Iberoamerican section was dominated by Brazil, with Best Fiction Film going to Gabriel Mascaro’s Berlin Special Jury prizewinner “The Blue Trail” and Anna Muylaert’s “The Best Mother in the World,” winning Best Screenplay, Cinematography and Performance for lead Shirley Cruz. The latter, sold worldwide by The Match Factory, won at...

Tribeca Crowd Rallies Behind Victoria Franco’s Fertility Drama Twelve Moons
Frédéric Boyer, Geoffrey Gilmore, and Genna Terranova
Victoria Franco’s debut feature “Twelve Moons” bowed Saturday in Tribeca’s International Narrative Competition, drawing a full house to Village East after its world-premiere screening on 7 June. The 97-minute Mexican drama follows Sofía, a 40-year-old architect whose infertility struggle and mounting addictions send her spiralling through Mexico City’s night streets. Festival programmer Frédéric Boyer hails the film as “a haunting portrait of struggle, grief, longing and self-destruction,” praising Ana de la Reguera’s lead performance for its “raw physicality and emotional depth.”

Franco wrote, directed and produced the picture alongside her brother, Cannes-laureate Michel Franco and regular collaborators Eréndira Núñez Larios and Yardena Maimon. The filmmaker arrives at Tribeca after shorts Reconciliados (2014) and Borde (2017) and a co-directing credit on Through the Eyes with Michel, experience she says helped her “calibrate intimacy on a larger canvas.” Cinematographer Sergio Armstrong’s roving handheld work and composer Rodrigo M.T.’s minimalist...

Guadalajara Highlights Hits, Notable Debuts Among Recent Spanish, Portuguese-Language Movies, Plus a Film About a ‘Hell of Naked Depravity’
Image
José María Cravioto’s “Wheels, Weed & Rock n’ Roll: The Legend of the Mexican Woodstock” and Victoria Franco’s “Twelve Moons” feature in the Mezcal Mexican competition at this year’s Guadalajara Film Festival.

Its other main competition, focusing on Ibero-American fiction movies and doc features, takes in two of the biggest hits this year from Spain, Portugal and Latin America: Brazilian Gabriel Mascaró’s “The Blue Trail” and Spaniard Eva Libertad’s “Deaf,” both big hits at Berlin.

As importantly, the Ibero-American Competition also highlights tales which deserve far more attention: a highly thoughtful first feature from Gerard Oms, “Away” (“Molt Lluny”), with a career-high turn by star Mario Casas; “Martina’s Search,” led by the frequently magnificent Argentinian player Mercedes Morán, and Puerto Rico’s “This Island,” part of a new Caribbean cinema which is ever more frequently scoring top fest berths.

Taken together, Guadalajara’s biggest two festival...

Jon Hamm Is a Noir Private Eye in This Clip From 'The Big Fix'
Image
Jon Hamm is one of those actors who seem to have emerged from the past, who was born wearing a slick suit and holding a dry martini. That's why he's so perfectly utilized in the period drama Mad Men. His masculine baritone is also used to great effect as Jack Bergin, the protagonist of Audible's The Big Lie and now The Big Fix, which finds the former FBI special agent now working as an intrepid private eye in glorious film noir fashion. MovieWeb has an exclusive clip from the Audible Original, which is out today, April 24, and also features Ana De La Reguera, John Slattery, Alia Shawkat, Omar Epps, and Erin Moriarty.

You can find Audible's official synopsis below:

"A gripping, cinematic audio drama that transports listeners to 1957 Los Angeles, this standalone story in The Big Lie series combines historical significance with modern relevance, offering listeners both entertainment and...

Jon Hamm on How Audible’s ‘The Big Fix’ Spotlights ‘Inconvenient Truths’ About Underrepresented Communities
Image
Jon Hamm has done plenty of voice acting over his career, but voicing 1950s FBI agent-turned-private investigator Jack Bergin has proven unique.

Instead of recording his lines in a silo, Hamm was joined in the recording studio by a murderer’s row of performers — including Alia Shawkat, Ana de la Reguera, Bradley Whitford, Giancarlo Esposito, Omar Epps, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery — for the Audible Original series 2022’s “The Big Lie” and the upcoming new installment “The Big Fix.”

“This is better in every way, but mostly because the story is so intimate that it’s super helpful to have the personal connection with the person that you’re acting opposite,” Hamm said, discussing the series, created by John Mankiewicz and directed by Aaron Lipstadt, during Variety & Audible’s Cocktails and Conversations at Sundance. (Watch the full conversation in the video above.) “It’s like...

Ella Purnell's Army Of The Dead Character Explained — It's Not Her Only Zack Snyder Project
Image
Before she was the toast of Hollywood, Ella Purnell had a starring role in Zack Snyder's 2021, Army of the Dead, and it's not the only time she's worked with the director. Army of the Dead is one of the Zack Snyder projects that feels a little bit lost to time. That's probably because it was released on Netflix in May 2021, smack-dab in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, not exactly when audiences were searching for a movie about a viral outbreak that destroys society and turns the afflicted into shambling, quarantined monsters.

It's a serviceable zombie action flick but feels a little half-baked in a few too many ways. Perhaps that's why audiences haven't attached themselves to it the same way Snyder fanboys have to movies like Justice League, Watchmen, and 300. Whatever issues the movie has, the cast isn't one of them. Ella Purnell, in particular, is a standout,...

The film grossed over $80 million at the domestic box office against its $35 million budget, going on to net a further $19 million internationally (via Box Office Mojo). Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead Universe Scrapped at Netflix
Image
A once fruitful creative relationship between Netflix and director Zack Snyder could possibly be on the rocks. Snyder delivered two big hits for the streamer with 2021's Army of the Dead and its prequel spinoff, Army of Thieves. This resulted in plans emerging for another sequel and an animated series to expand the universe. However, further news on these new projects has stalled lately, and it looks like the reason for that has now become clear - the Army of the Dead franchise is...well, dead.

According to a report from The Wrap, it would appear that Netflix has quietly shelved Snyder's entire Army of the Dead Universe. That means the planned animated series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and the live-action sequel, reportedly titled Planet of the Dead, look to be off the table. While the report doesn't go into details of why Snyder's zombie universe has been abandoned,...

Netflix has quietly canceled Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead franchise plans
Image
For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel called Planet of the Dead was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his Rebel Moon sci-fi movies – and The Wrap has revealed that Netflix “quietly canceled” plans for an Army of the Dead Universe.

In an article on the Rebel Moon films that features interviews with Snyder and his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder, The Wrap mentions, “Army of the Dead, a movie the Snyders made for Netflix before Rebel Moon, had a similarly ambitious (universe/franchise) plan, with several sequels and spin-offs in the works,...
