Daniela Fejerman, Elvira Lindo’s Malaga Film Festival Opener ‘Someone Who Takes Care of Me’ Celebrates Actors, Embraces Women With HIV
Image
Daniela Fejerman and Elvira Lindo’s “Someone Who Takes Care of Me,” a celebration of actors, their passion, craft and historical legacy, opened this year’s Malaga Film Festival in a fitting tribute to the Spanish entertainment industry.

The film, which screened out of competition, centers on three women whose careers have spanned stage, film and television, actresses of different generations whose fortunes in life have greatly differed and who struggle with untold secrets and unresolved conflicts.

Aura Garrido stars as Nora, a young, award-winning actress with a promising future who carefully balances between the two main pillars in her life, her grandmother Lilith (Magüi Mira), who reigned for decades as a renowned theater star, and her mother Cecilia (Emma Suárez), whose career has languished after having achieved some glory in the 1980s, a decade of excess in which she heavily partook.

As Nora experiences success in her burgeoning career,...

Emily Dickinson
Film Review: ‘Until We Fall’
Emily Dickinson
Hope, Emily Dickinson told us, is the thing with feathers. Despair, according to Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm’s savagely convincing, brilliantly performed “Until We Fall,” is a thing with fangs and fists.

Dropping us into the lives of Danish couple Adam (Dar Salim) and Louise (Lisa Carlehed) as they return to the place from where their son Lucas went missing some time before — a seaside town in the Canary Islands where they have a holiday apartment handed down by Louise’s grandparents — Sahlstrøm’s frighteningly mature, gripping second feature is an uncompromising portrait of the pitiless derangement of grief. How it slowly dislocates you from everyone around and most dramatically, from yourself, from the person you used to be, and the way you usually behaved. As Louise says snappishly when Adam remarks on some little change to her routine: “There is no ‘usually’ anymore.”

Insights like these punctuate Sahlstrøm’s economical,...

‘Galaxy of Horrors’ DVD Review
Stars: Olli Banjo, Adam Buller, Michelle Colao, Greg Engbrecht, Elle Gabriel, Francesc Garrido, Alias Hilsum, Charles Hubbell, Rob Kerkovich, Vin Kridakorn, Mathis Landwehr, Claire Oelkers, Julio Perillán, Fabio Prati, Luke Sorge | Directed by Dennis Cabella, Javier Chillon, Todd Cobery, Andrew Desmond, Benni Diez, Marcello Ercole, Richard Karpala, Justin McConnell, Antonio Padovan, Fabio Prati, Ethan Shaftel, Marinko Spahic

Much like Dread Central’s Zombieworld, which brought together a number of short films under one banner to create an all-new anthology film, Galaxy of Horrors is a selection of eight shorts, curated from Rue Morgue and Unstable Ground’s Little Terrors Festival by Toronto film programmer Justin McConnell, all wrapped up in the story of a man trapped in a damaged cryogenic pod.

This wraparound segment that sees and astronaut awoken from his cryogenic slimber too soon and forced to watch a series of shorts while the power supply drains away Becasue he’s watching these shorts… Yes, for our astronaut the terror-filled tales are terrifying not only because of their content but because they’re literlly killing him! Of the short films the astronaut (and we the audience) watch there are a number of standouts: Iris, directed by Richard Karpala, which tells the story of a siri-like phone assistant with a conscience when her owner, an assassin, does not. It’s a great take on how technology and humans interact and how far that realtionship with technology could, possibly (more likely imporbably), go.

Pathos, directed by Fabio Prati, Dennis Cabella and Marcello Ercole, is a foreign-language entry which is easily the best – and most memorable (it’s the one short that vividly stuck in my mind waaay after I’d finished watching the film) and tells the story of a future where citizens must pay -literally – to be alive and experience a “life” outside of the odd chamber in which our protagonist’s “exists” – yes his reality, his very existence, is all in his head! This short is yet another look at how humans and technology interact, in this case taking the ideas of alternate realities and how humanity perceives reality, borne out of the likes of The Matrix, to their logical and more importantly, horrific extreme.

Special mention must also go to Antonio Padovan‘s short Eveless, which sees men try to keep the worlds population going without women; and Benni Diez and Marinko Spahic‘s kinetic action/horror hybrid Kingz – which recalls the best of horror anthology V/H/S whilst staying true to its own badass terror-filled ethos.

Whilst the eight shorts tell very different stories, there is a common thread running between them – they’re all damn good films! Unlike a alot of anthologies that have one or two dud amongst their number, each and every short in Galaxy of Horrors hits it out of the park: all eight tales having interesting sci-fi stories to tell and cool concepts to portray. Plus it’s nice to see sci-fi horror in the spotlight once more…

Galaxy of Horrors is out now on DVD from StudioCanal.

Academy Award Film Series: Bardem Fights for Right to Die in Amenábar's 'Sea'
'The Sea Inside': Javier Bardem and director Alejandro Amenábar. 'The Sea Inside': Outstanding supporting cast help to lift flawed Right to Die drama Alejandro Amenábar's The Sea Inside often verges on melodrama, featuring as its centerpiece a showy performance by Javier Bardem as a tetraplegic man eager to end his life “with dignity.” Its not inconsiderable flaws notwithstanding – including a simplistic “right to die” debate – this real-life-inspired drama is in and of itself both compelling and touching enough to merit a look; but what makes The Sea Inside a must-see are the superb performances of those in Bardem's periphery. The story revolves around Ramón Sampedro (Javier Bardem), a middle-aged man who has been bed-ridden and dependent on the care of others since a diving accident in his early 20s. (Hence the original Spanish title “Into the Sea.”) Yearning for freedom from his mostly immobile body,...

Apartment 143

Stars: Kai Lennox, Gia Mantegna, Michael O’Keefe, Francesc Garrido, Fiona Glascott, Rick Gonzalez | Written by Rodrigo Cortés | Directed by Carles Torrens

Ghosts, they are a grumpy bunch aren’t they? They wonder the house and throw things around, make people bend over backwards and swear a lot, and if we are to believe in what films say then they just love the attention of a well-placed surveillance camera and recording device. The ones that are born from rage and violence are often the subject of a good Asian horror as we see in the most famous exports such as The Ring (Ringu) and The Grudge (Ju-On), and this with just a hint ofParanormal Activity is where Apartment 143 takes its inspiration.

The storyline for Apartment 143 is fairly typical, we know it quite well. A haunted family decide to bring in a team of parapsychologists to find...

Gearing up for Afm we got our hands on new plot details that are probably overhyping the film. "Shot entirely in English, 'Emergo' is the descendant of 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Rec,' but breaks away from tradition by revolutionizing filmmaking altogether," says the synopsis making bold promises. "All types of cameras are used video, HD, 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm as we follow scientists footsteps through a haunted house, casting a frightening spell over the audience. Brace yourself for this terrifying experience!" Kai Lennox, Michael O'Keefee, Gia Mantegna, Rick Gonzalez, Fionna Glascott, Francesc Garrido all star in the flick that promises to be something "fresh" and "original" -- isn't that what we all want?...

Afm 2011: Super Early Sales Art for Rodgrigo Cortes' Emergo
A couple of days ago we told you about the next film from Buried director Rodrigo Cortes, entitled Emergo, and now we have some unfortunately low-res sales art to share. We'll see if we can get you a better look, but this should do for now.

"Shot entirely in English, 'Emergo' is the descendant of 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Rec,' but breaks away from tradition by revolutionizing filmmaking altogether. All types of cameras are used – video, HD, 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm – as we follow scientists’ footsteps through a haunted house, casting a frightening spell over the audience. Brace yourself for this terrifying experience!"

Emergo stars Kai Lennox, Michael O'Keefee, Gia Mantegna, Rick Gonzalez, Fionna Glascott, and Francesc Garrido.

Let's hope it delivers on its promises.
