Bowen Yang, Ana Gasteyer, Jim Parsons, Rachel Dratch, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, Mitch Silpa and Michael Urie are set to perform a live, cold reading of Beverly Hills, a soap opera written by TVLine founder and Spoiler Alert author Michael Ausiello when he was 13, in its New York debut.

The NYC performance is scheduled for Sept. 8 at the Newman Mills Theater at the Robert W. Wilson McC Theater Space.

Per the description: “In the 1980s’ Golden Age of television (see: Dallas and Falcon Crest), back when Michael Ausiello was but a closeted gay teen doing his damnedest to get by in small-town New Jersey, he penned 517 episodes of an original soap opera called Beverly Hills. Kyle MacLachlan
MacLachlan, Long Join Amazon’s You Deserve Each Other
Kyle MacLachlan
Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of Sarah Hogle’s 2020 bestseller You Deserve Each Other has widened its cast, recruiting Kyle MacLachlan, Justin Long, Natalie Morales, Ana Gasteyer, Timothy Busfield and Hope Davis alongside previously announced leads Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy. The feature was formally unveiled on 30 June and immediately sparked a tongue-in-cheek Instagram spat between Badgley and Fahy that doubled as early promotion.

The screenplay began with writers Brett Haley and Marc Basch before being overhauled by long-time rom-com partners Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, who will also direct and whose credits include Never Been Kissed and He’s Just Not That Into You. Fifth Season is financing the picture with Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron, while Caroline Jaczko joins as executive producer.

Hogle’s novel—twice shortlisted for the Goodreads Choice Awards—follows Naomi Westfield and Nicholas Rose, an engaged pair who sabotage one another to dodge...

‘I know this dude!’: David Alan Grier explains why he leapt at the chance to play a ‘burned-out’ doctor on ‘St. Denis Medical’
Image
“For me, it was just an opportunity to see a bunch of friends in the same room and kick it and have a ball,” shares David Alan Grier about his Critics Choice Award nomination for his role on St. Denis Medical. The actor received the acknowledgment last December for the first season of the NBC mockumentary, in which he stars as the curmudgeonly but knowledgeable Doctor Ron.

Grier knew from the description of the character alone that he wanted to join the series. He remembers reading the script by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, which characterized Ron as “burned out” and “the oldest staff member” in the hospital, and thinking, “I know this dude!” Despite the laughs inherent in that type of guy, the performer knew there would be heft to the role, too. “I think he’s a really good doctor. It’s just the system won, for the most part,...

Seth Meyers laments a late-night show's end as it nears final episode
Image
Seth Meyers has decades of experience in late-night TV between his time on Saturday Night Live and as host of Late Night. Still, the comedian doesn't get used to seeing any show go off the air.

Meyers has been around to see shows like Lights Out with David Spade, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee go off the air. He's also watched as fellow hosts like James Corden and Conan O'Brien signed off for the final time.

Now, another late-night TV show is ready to end production. CBS announced After Midnight will end after two seasons. Host Taylor Tomlinson indicated a desire to return to stand-up despite an offer from the network for a third season. CBS also indicated it won't try to fill the timeslot, previously occupied by The Late Late Show with James Corden, with another late-night TV show.

Tom Cruise Almost Made A Surprise Cameo In A Top Gun SNL Sketch With Val Kilmer
Image
"Top Gun" star Tom Cruise has a memorable big screen history with Val Kilmer. Not only did the two actors rise to fame in the 1980s, but they played rivals in the blockbuster air combat film that would eventually result in a sequel that gave them a heartfelt reunion. That sequel also served as a fond farewell for Kilmer, who had been suffering from throat cancer but still managed to make a wonderful appearance in "Top Gun: Maverick," where his previously cocky character Tom "Iceman" Kazansky was suffering from the same ailment as Kilmer in real life, eventually dying in the movie years before Kilmer would actually pass away in 2025.

However, Cruise and Kilmer almost had a much different "Top Gun" reunion on the small screen over two decades earlier, thanks to "Saturday Night Live."

In a recent episode of "The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast," which is a must-listen for fans of "SNL,...

Val Kilmer Was Even Great Parodying Himself on ‘SNL’
Image
The late, great Val Kilmer was known for disappearing into his roles — but that doesn’t mean he took himself too seriously.

Though my favorite Kilmer role will probably always be as Doc Holliday in Tombstone, the masses will likely best remember him as “Iceman” in Top Gun. (Shoutout here to his embodiment of Jim Morrison in 1991’s The Doors, as well as a turn as the Caped Crusader in 1995’s Batman Forever.) No judgment here: Kilmer was killer in Top Gun, and then he broke our hearts in the best way possible with a surprise return for Top Gun: Maverick.

By the time the sequel was filmed and finally came out — there were Covid delays as Tom Cruise (rightly) insisted on a theatrical release — Kilmer was quite deep into his battle with throat cancer. Reprising the role of the cocky Naval aviator required the bravery of a real fighter pilot.

Michael Urie fulfilled his character arc in ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ by overcoming a fear of stairs in the funniest way possible
Image
Michael Urie earned consistent laughter in the recent revival of Once Upon a Mattress thanks to the mannered way in which his infantilized Prince Dauntless called for his mother. “But Maw-maw,” he’d cry out to Queen Aggravain (Ana Gasteyer) in a double-accented deadpan, leaving the audience in stitches. “I don't remember why it just came out that way,” admits Urie, “It just came out that way and people laughed and I said, 'Well, I'm going to do that every time!' It's one of those things that you become addicted to, that kind of a response.” (Watch our full video interview with Urie above.)

The actor is used to eliciting riotous responses from audience members with finely curated comedic bits. This is Urie’s second musical comedy in as many seasons, after starring as Sir Robin in another medieval-themed tuner, Spamalot, last spring. But as Prince Dauntless, one of...

'Resident Alien' Fans Need to See 'People of Earth'
Image
Resident Alien has been a delight since its premiere in 2021, seamlessly blending situational comedy with sci-fi world-building and a quirky imagination. Season 3, perhaps its best yet, premiered more than one year ago, and fans are eagerly awaiting Season 4 as the show heads to the USA Network.

There's a kindness and a deep understanding of the human condition laced throughout that show, and it constantly reminds me of possibly my favorite sci-fi comedy on television, a very similar (and arguably even better) series from 2016 that aired on TBS. It developed a small but loyal cult following in Season 2 after word-of-mouth spread, and was renewed for Season 3. Until it wasn't.

Extraterrestrials and People of Earth

People of Earth was one of the rare shows that critics and audiences agreed was great; it currently has an 89% critics' score and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Created by David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death...

Jack Nicholson Introduces Adam Sandler’s ‘SNL’ Tribute Song During 50th Anniversary Special
Image
Adam Sandler performed a song that paid tribute to Saturday Night Live’s 50 years on the air during Sunday night’s anniversary special, but not before he was introduced by retired Hollywood veteran Jack Nicholson.

Nicholson introduced the Grown Ups actor before he began his referential track, where he highlighted infamous SNL moments, pondered when Lorne Michaels will retire and quipped about “finding out your favorite musician is antisemitic.”

Sandler kicked off his performance saying, “everyone in this room has something in common,” pointing out that “all of our lives were changed by the show” before poking fun at some lighthearted moments. He questioned who would “take over the show when Lorne retires” in his lyrics before he appeared to joke that Speedy Rosenthal, a longtime member of SNL’s music department, would be the one to take over Michaels’ spot.

The comedian and actor also seemingly threw a jab at Kanye West,...

Image
“SNL50” celebrated half a century of NBC’s hit comedy sketch show on Sunday night, and in that time, there have been a lot of beloved characters. So, the “SNL” crew made to bring back some favorites for the commemorative night.

Sadly, that did not include Bill Hader’s Stefon, who used to appear on Weekend Update regularly with Seth Meyers, before the character eventually “married” the host. And his absence was definitely felt, as Hader was trending on social media throughout the night, with fans mourning his absence.

But it did include characters like Kristen Wiig’s Dooneese, Bobby Moynihan’s Drunk Uncle and more. So, in case you missed the show, we’ve rounded them all up for you.

Here are the beloved “Saturday Night Live” characters that returned for “SNL50.”

Kim Kardashian made a grand return to the ‘Saturday Night Live’ stage for its star-studded 50th anniversary special, stealing the spotlight in more ways than one.

During the opening sketch, Kardashian took part in a hilarious reunion of the Maharelle sisters alongside Kristen Wiig, Scarlett Johansson, Ana Gasteyer, and Will Ferrell. As Ferrell’s character, Robert Goulet, considered choosing a wife, Wiig’s quirky Dooneese character turned the moment into comedy gold, using Kardashian’s backside as a drum in a playful and unexpected bit, much to the delight of the audience.

‘SNL50’ Review: NBC’s Nostalgic, Irreverent Tribute Makes the Case for the Comedy Institution’s Legacy
Image
“Saturday Night Live” celebrated its 50th anniversary with a three-and-a-half-hour Sunday night primetime special, because there were too many stars to fit into 90 minutes.

Lorne Michaels’ sketch comedy institution has been part of the fabric of American culture for so long that it can be easy to take for granted how unique its run has been. “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” served as a star-studded reminder of how singular the show is — how long it’s been relevant, how many stars it has produced and how many catchphrases it has embedded into the collective vocabulary. The special was a cavalcade of sketches, celebrity guests and “SNL” history that celebrated the past while keeping an eye on the present.

Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter opened the show with a rendition of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound,” which Simon performed on the show with Paul McCartney in 1976.. Then 16-time host Steve Martin got to do the monologue,...

‘SNL50’: Meryl Streep makes first-ever appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ as Kate McKinnon’s alien abductee mom
Image
Miss Rafferty has a mother, and it’s … Meryl Streep?!

The three-time Oscar winner made her first-ever appearance on Saturday Night Live during the 50th anniversary special on Sunday night. She popped up as Colleen Rafferty Sr., the mother of Kate McKinnon‘s iconic character who frequently gets abducted by aliens. Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson played their co-abductees, while Jon Hamm and Aidy Bryant interviewed them all as Pentagon officials.

“Us Rafferty gals, we always attracted the freaks,” Streep declared during SNL50. “For years I thought Colleen’s father was part alien, but it turns out he was just uncircumcised.”

The 75-year-old actress added, “I still had my pants on when they took me, but much like her, I’ve got an ‘into the woods’ sort of situation going on. My ex used to say that it was like trying to hack his way through the black forest.” That...

Jack Nicholson Makes Rare TV Appearance at ‘SNL50,’ Introduces Adam Sandler’s Heartfelt Song Honoring the Show’s History
Image
Adam Sandler’s performance at Sunday night’s “SNL50: Anniversary Special” was one of the most memorable moments of the night — even before it began. The performance was introduced by Jack Nicholson, who received loud applause inside Studio 8H.

“Everyone in this room has something in common. All of our lives were changed by the show,” Sandler, who spent five years on “Saturday Night Live” from 1991 to 1995, began. His song highlighted many behind-the-scenes jokes, including calling out “Drunk Wally” for holding the cue cards upside down and thanking “Nurse Teresa” for the many doses of Pepto Bismol.

“50 years of writers seeing Spielberg at Lorne’s monitors, not laughing at one of their sketches that he obviously hated,” Sandler sang. “50 years of those same writers getting wasted at the after party and loudly telling everybody that ‘Jaws ‘was overrated.”

Sandler joked about how each cast feels they’re the best,...

‘SNL50’ Digital Short: Andy Samberg Sings About How Everyone Who Works at ‘SNL’ Has Crippling Anxiety | Video
Image
Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Andy Samberg returned in a new digital short for the “SNL50” special to sing about the legendary, crippling anxiety experienced by him and countless others while working on the NBC series.

The short begins with Samberg calling to ask current “SNL” alum Bowen Yang whether he plans on attending the “SNL50” special or not. When Yang responds that he’s thinking about skipping it because “SNL” gives him “anxiety,” Samberg puts his arm around Yang and walks him into an ’80s electronic anthem about, well, the show’s history of giving its cast members intense nerves.

“Every single person who ever worked at ‘SNL’ had anxiety,” Samberg sings in the short, which also features appearances from Yang, Molly Shannon, Sarah Squirm, Chris Parnell, Ana Gasteyer, and other “SNL” cast and crew members from other the years. At one point, Samberg even jokes that working...

Andy Samberg takes Saturday Night Live fans across 50 years of the NBC sketch comedy show. During the 50th Anniversary Special of Saturday Night Live there was a digital sketch done by Samberg and Bowen Yang. The "Anxiety-Ridden Digital Short" which opens with Samberg asking Yang if he's going to the special. He says no, he has anxiety. This kicks off a look across 50 years of SNL history, featuring everything from retro clips to mixing those with current day reprisals, with Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer donning the same sweaters during their "Schweddy Balls" skit.
