Netflix's Penelope Cast & Character Guide
Image
Penelope is Netflix's newest coming-of-age series and represents the first leading role for its young actress. Created by award-winning producer Mel Eslyn and The Morning Show's star Mark Duplass, the show stars a small but talented cast. The narrative follows Penelope, a contemporary teen who feels out of place within her community of peers and decides to escape into the wilderness. Cutting off her family and friends, the teenager enjoys her own and nature's company before meeting fellow travelers who show her what true belonging is.

Although Penelope feels a pull to nature, it is in her found connections that she finds peace and purpose. The Netflix 2024 TV show highlights that nature can teach humans a way back to each other, even in a modern world. Penelope's character represents a severed link that promises to be healed in the trees and through interactions with peculiar characters, like an elder nomad,...

Kellan Lutz & Jeff Fahey in Action Thriller 'Due Justice' Official Trailer
Image
"You tell me where my money is, and I'll return your daughter to you" Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller titled Due Justice, both written and directed by filmmaker Javier Reyna. Yet another of these junk action films getting dumped out on VOD, way too many of them this year. If that title wasn't a hint already, this is obviously about a guy getting "due justice" by going for revenge and going after the people who harmed him. Of course. A very American story. An attorney with a military past hunts down the gang who killed his wife and brother and took his daughter. Filled with shady characters and the Feds and all the usuals. Due Justice stars Kellan Lutz, Jeff Fahey, & Efren Ramirez, with Cynthia Geary, Manu Intiraymi, Chelsea Lopez, and David Jofre. Yeah this movie looks as uninteresting as it sounds. // Continue Reading...

Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993: ‘Picket Fences’ and ‘Seinfeld’ clean up
Image
It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.

For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

After a stellar year in 1992, reigning Best Drama...

‘Northern Exposure’ Stars Rob Morrow, Janine Turner & More Explain Why CBS Cult Fave Was “Groundbreaking” For Its Time – Vulture Festival
Image
The stars of Northern Exposure — Rob Morrow, Janine Turner, Barry Corbin, Cynthia Geary and John Corbett — reunited to kick off this week’s Vulture Festival. During the panel Monday, the cast members reminisced about their time starring in the CBS series, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, though there was no mention of a revival series that was originally announced in 2018.

“Your chance of having a hit television is probably as good as your chance of going to space and circling Earth,” Corbin said about Northern Exposure’s success. “The casting fit, the location fit, the music fit. Everything fit.”

Corbin, who starred as astronaut and retired Marine fighter pilot Maurice J. Minnifield, agreed with his fellow cast mates that all the elements behind Northern Exposure made for a high-performing series that stood out from other shows at the time.

When the Emmy-winning series hit the air in 1990, Northern Exposure...

Be our guest: ‘Black Mirror’ stars ought to submit in guest after dramatic move
Image
“Black Mirror’s” Emmy journey this season has had more twists than a “Black Mirror” episode. After getting permission to stay in the Best TV Movie category, despite its submission “Smithereens” being five minutes short of the new 75-minute requirement, the show was shunted to drama last week. That means instead of the limited/TV movie acting races, “Black Mirror’s” Season 5 stars can now choose to enter in drama lead, supporting or guest. And if any of them or Netflix are torn, take it from us: Go guest.

Current Emmy rules stipulate that performers who appear in less than 50 percent of a show’s season are eligible to compete in guest, but are not required to, so they can pick whatever category they want. But to put it bluntly, guest is arguably where all “Black Mirror” actors belong. The show is an anthology series with a different cast every episode.

Thandiwe Newton at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Emmy Predictions 2019: Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Thandiwe Newton at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Last Year’s Winner: Thandie Newton, “Westworld”

Still Eligible: No.

Hot Streak: In the last 20 years, there have only been three repeat winners in this category: Anna Gunn for “Breaking Bad” (2013 – 2014), Blythe Danner for “Huff” (2005 – 2006), and Allison Janney for “The West Wing” (2000 – 2001). Nancy Marchand is the only actress to win Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in three consecutive years: between 1980 and 1982 for playing Margaret Pynchon in “Lou Grant.” She also won in 1978 for the same role, which is the most of any actor ever.

Fun Fact: 2018 wasn’t the only year the Emmys nominated seven actresses in the supporting actress category. In 1992, Valerie Mahaffey (“Northern Exposure”), Mary Alice (“I’ll Fly Away”), Barbara Barrie (“Law & Order”), Conchata Ferrell (“L.A. Law”), Cynthia Geary (“Northern Exposure”), Marg Helgenberger (“China Beach”), and Kay Lenz (“Reasonable Doubts”) were all up for the Emmy, and each performer represented a broadcast network. In 2018, none were.

[TV] Special Musical Episodes: How Do They Rate?
It has become a classic television trope: out of boredom, or inspiration, or celebration, television creators are occasionally overpowered with the urge to break out the big production number and turn a normally prosaic show into a song and dance extravaganza.

Most recently, How I Met Your Mother celebrated its 100th episode with a rousing production number, “Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit.” But the phenomenon has been building for years, with decidedly mixed results. I was curious to see how successful (or painful) various television shows have been at attempting to be tuneful. I have differing levels of familiarity with the source materials, but I tried to wade in with an open mind, a song in my heart, and a spring in my step.
