Now regarded as some of Hollywood's finest performers and most sought-after leading men, Willem Dafoe, Paul Bettany, and Tom Hardy were still paving a path for themselves in the entertainment industry when they joined forces for the 2003 murder mystery The Reckoning. Set in 14th-century England, the engrossing picture features Bettany as a priest on the run from the church after he commits adultery, finding sanctuary with an eclectic band of traveling actors who become swept up in a controversial murder trial.

The Reckoning failed to become a massive critical or commercial success, but it did feature exceptional performances by its talented ensemble cast, with the underrated flick helping pave the way for the blossoming careers of Bettany and...

Every Movie Coming to Prime Video in October 2023
Image
Going into the spooky season, Amazon's streaming service Prime Video isn't adding much fright in the movie department, but still plenty of fun, with diamond robberies, hilarious cases of mistaken identity, courtroom drama, and not-so-heroic heroes all coming soon. With some coming through the sub-service Freevee (which is free exclusively on Amazon), there will be plenty of movies for everyone to enjoy.

Oct. 1 starts with A Fish Called Wanda, where some successful diamond robbers can't trust each other with the goods. Then, Fiddler on the Roof arrives, along with The Big Lebowski, where one random Dude is mistaken for a wealthy guy of the same name who's in trouble with a gang. In addition, there's 12 Angry Men, where one juror holds a teen's life in his hands, and James Gunn's The Suicide Sqaud, following a bunch of superpowered misfits who have to save the world. So here's everything we...

Jamie Lee Curtis had one request for her male co-stars in A Fish Called Wanda
Image
Before Jamie Lee Curtis could have fun making out with a “bunch of different men” while filming A Fish Called Wanda, she had one small request for her co-stars.

Curtis led the 1988 crime comedy as the title character Wanda, a grifter who takes part in a diamond heist with a group of gangsters. In an attempt to gather intel on the prized gems, she seduces lawyer Archie (John Cleese).

In other words, Wanda gets to “be the paramour for a bunch of different men”, the 64-year-old actor said in a new interview with Vulture, published on Tuesday 22 November.

“It was fun,” Curtis said of the experience, adding that she bought all her co-stars “toothbrushes on opening day”.

“You know, because it’s gross! You’re just gonna be making out with all these strange people. So I asked them to go brush their teeth,” she explained.

In addition to Cleese,...

A Fish Called Wanda Available on Blu-ray October 3rd from Arrow Video
“The funniest movie I have seen in a long time” – Roger Ebert

A Fish Called Wanda will be available on Blu-ray October 3rd from Arrow Video

In 1988, John Cleese, former Python and the mastermind behind Fawlty Towers, teamed up with the veteran Ealing Comedy director Charles Crichton (The Lavender Hill Mob) to produce another classic of British comedy.

Cleese plays Archie Leach, a weak-willed barrister who finds himself embroiled with a quartet of ill-matched jewel thieves – two American con artists played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline, Michael Palin’s animal-loving hitman and London gangster Tom Georgeson – when Georgeson is arrested. Only he and Palin know the whereabouts of the diamonds, prompting plenty of farce and in-fighting as well as some embarrassing nudity and the unfortunate demise of some innocent pooches…

Nominated for three Academy Awards and winning one for Kline’s outstanding supporting turn as the psychopathic Otto,...

John Cleese and co wade closer to A Fish Called Wanda musical
MGM buyout means this long-awaited stage production may finally go ahead, with Cleese on the lookout for a director

A musical based on A Fish Called Wanda is a step (fin? fathom?) closer to realisation after John Cleese told comedy website Chortle that he has struck a deal with MGM, the studio that holds the rights to the film.

The long-mooted stage production hit trouble when the studio filed for bankruptcy protection last year. "MGM was in a terrible mess," said Cleese, who starred in the 1988 crime-comedy alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, Tom Georgeson and Cleese's fellow former Monty Python performer Michael Palin. "Now a couple of people have bought it who are apparently, according to my spies, extremely decent and reasonable human beings. As a result of that, a deal has been done."

The film version of A Fish Called Wanda tells the story of a transatlantic gang...

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: Costume Q&A with Lucinda Wright
Digg this! Stumble upon something good? Share it on StumbleUpon Tweet This! Share this on Facebook Post on Google Buzz

Lucinda Wright talks exclusively to Clothes on Film about her contribution to ITV’s adaptation of The Suspicions of Mr Whicher starring Paddy Considine. The date: 1860. Place: South West England. Costumes: an elegant recreation of the revolutionary Victorian age.

Although probably known for costume designing the 2005 reboot of Doctor Who, Wright has worked in television since the late 1990s. She has also covered period costume before, principally with Henry VIII (2003) and Georgian era Fanny Hill (2007). The Suspicions of Mr Whicher is based on Kate Summerscale’s prize winning book about real life Scotland Yard detective Jack Whicher’s (Considine) investigation of an infant murder and his controversial conclusion that lead to national outcry. It is sober yet gripping drama.
