Frankie Goes To Hollywood Biopic In The Works Starring Callum Scott Howells
Image
If the story of Freddie Mercury and Queen can lead to an Oscar (or four) for Bohemian Rhapsody, why wouldn't you make a film about Frankie Goes To Hollywood crafting iconic song 'Relax'? Per Deadline, Working Title is planning just that, with It's A Sin's Callum Scott Howells aboard to play frontman Holly Johnson in Relax.

Bernard Rose, who has a deep connection to the band and that song as he directed the 'Relax' music video, has adapted Johnson's memoir A Bone In My Flute and will make the film, which will chronicle the genesis and impact of the song. Alongside Howells, the producers will look to cast fellow Frankie members Paul Rutherford, Mark O'Toole, Brian Nash and Peter Gill.

The group, also well known for number one hits 'Two Tribes' and 'The Power Of Love' were among the biggest pop acts of the ’80s.

Yet they disbanded acrimoniously...

Frankie Goes to Hollywood Reuniting for First Performance in 36 Years
Image
Relax — Frankie Goes to Hollywood is coming back. The pop band behind the 1983 smash hit “Relax” will reunite to perform on May 7th in their hometown of Liverpool, England, the BBC reports.

Featuring their classic lineup of Holly Johnson, Brian Nash, Paul Rutherford, Mark O’Toole, and Peter Gill, Frankie Goes to Hollywood will play the opening weekend of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Though a few members of the band have played together before in the past couple of decades, this performance will mark the first time all original members have shared a stage since they broke up in 1987.

Nash told the BBC that finally reuniting in their hometown “felt like a good thing to do,” and that they’re looking forward to feeling “a bit of Scouse love.” The band will also get to hang out with their fellow Liverpudlians in Atomic Kitten, The Lightning Seeds, and The Real Thing,...

Alison Steadman recalls nervousness before filming British TV’s first lesbian kiss
Image
Alison Steadman has reflected on filming the first lesbian kiss on British television in the 1974 BBC drama, Girl.

The scene saw Steadman and Myra Frances’s military officers share an intimate moment in the then-controversial drama about gay women in the army.

Speaking in a new reader interview in The Guardian, Steadman, 76, said: “I remember being very nervous about the whole thing. Then I got over it. Then I was worried about how my parents, who lived in a quiet suburban area of Liverpool, would cope.

“I thought, ‘My poor mum! The neighbours will be whispering, “Did you see your daughter on television?”’ By the time we came to record, this great director [Peter Gill] didn’t make a fuss and said, ‘So this is the bit where they kiss … All right, quick kiss, let’s carry on.’

“I was just nervous about people’s reactions. But my mum was great,...

You and Myra Frances shared UK TV’s first lesbian kiss in a 1974 BBC drama, Girl. What are your memories of this taboo-breaking event? VerulamiumParkRanger

Well, I remember being very nervous about the whole thing. Then I got over it. Then I was worried about how my parents, who lived in a quiet suburban area of Liverpool, would cope. I thought: “My poor mum! The neighbours will be whispering: ‘Did you see your daughter on television?’” By the time we came to record, this great director [Peter Gill] didn’t make a fuss and said: “So this is the bit where they kiss … All right, quick kiss, let’s carry on.” I was just nervous about people’s reactions. But my mum was great, and the neighbours got over it quickly.

Haven’t yet seen all the best old-school vintage naval combat epics? This color & ‘scope thriller has a terrific cast of Brit stars and up-n-comers, can boast excellent visuals and is historically accurate. Alec Guinness captains a ship during the Napoleonic Wars, and finds his duty complicated by a psychopathic top officer (Dirk Bogarde) who usurps authority and sees the crew as fresh meat for his sadistic ideas about discipline. All the tech and art credits are top-tier, plus we get nice supporting perfs from the likes of Anthony Quayle, Nigel Stock, Maurice Denham, Victor Maddern, Tom Bell, and Murray Melvin.
