Texas musicians Leon Bridges and Charley Crockett have announced a lengthy summer tour together, dubbed the ‘Crooner & the Cowboy Tour’.

After kicking off at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl in early June, the tour will make stops across the country, performing in cities such as Portland and Milwaukee, before going to Europe for a large portion of the tour. Following the duo’s shows in Switzerland, Ireland, France and more, Bridges and Crockett will return to the States in late July for a series of performances across the country. The tour is slated to conclude on September 23 at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

Supporting artists accompanying Bridges and Crockett include Noeline Hofmann, Reyna Tropical, Honky Tonkin’ In Queens, and Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

A callow writer attempts to use a young woman’s death as a springboard to fame in Vengeance, the filmmaking debut of actor/writer B.J. Novak. Playing the lead role, Novak personifies onscreen some of the smugness and opportunism often found when the media turns its attention to rural America. But the film isn’t entirely free of the character’s flaws; moments of insight or empathy struggle for notice above the script’s false notes and unconvincing observations. Mild fish-out-of-water humor and an element of mystery may satisfy fans of Novak’s work on the again-popular The Office, but fall short of proving he has much potential as a big-screen auteur.

Back in 2009, the Flatlanders released Hills and Valleys, their last album of original recordings. A dozen years later, the Texas trio of Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore reunite for a new record: Treasure of Love will be released July 9th.

The LP is technically the follow-up to 2012’s The Odessa Tapes, but that project consisted of unreleased recordings from the early Seventies. The 15 tracks on Treasure of Love are the product of a fresh recording session, primarily classic songs that have peppered the Flatlanders’ live set for the past five decades.

An upcoming benefit concert, Food for Love, will feature David Byrne, Jackson Browne, the Chicks, Kurt Vile, and dozens of other artists performing to help raise money to feed New Mexico’s hungry. The stream will be broadcast on February 13th via the Food for Love website and on YouTube.

“February 13th (Valentine’s Day Eve), some musician friends of mine, and many I’ve never met, are doing a virtual concert to raise money for meals for New Mexico’s hardest hit,” Byrne wrote in a statement, mailed to his newsletter subscribers.

Hal Ketchum, a singer-songwriter who rode the 1990s country music wave with hit singles including “Small Town Saturday Night,” “Past the Point of Rescue” and “Hearts Are Gonna Roll,” died Monday of dementia complications at his home. He was 67.

His wife, Andrea, posted the news on social media today. “May his music live on forever in your hearts and bring you peace,” she wrote. He had revealed his diagnosis in April 2019.

After settling in Nashville via Texas in the late 1980s, Ketchum broke out with a string of hit country singles starting with “Small Town Saturday Night” in 1991. That track peaked at No. 2 — as did follow-ups including “Past the Point of Rescue” and “Hearts Are Gonna Roll.” “Sure Love,” the lead title track from Ketchum’s 1992 LP, hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. By the time More a Legend Than a Band came out in 1990, it was primarily a historic document, drawn from the 1972 sessions of one of Texas’ earliest and short-lived alternative-country bands. But as the band members-Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore-began to have successful solo careers as singer-songwriters, interest grew in their long-forgotten Flatlanders roots.
