Slasher Trash trailer: 4+ hour documentary from the In Search of Darkness team focuses on slasher movies
Image
I love horror movies from the 1980s. They are the films that made me a horror fan in the first place, since I was born in the ’80s and started watching horror before the end of the decade. So I really enjoyed watching the epic In Search of Darkness series, which dedicated three epic documentaries to the horror movies of the ’80s. My favorite genre movies to watch are slasher movies, and it’s the classic 1986 slasher Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI that I credit with getting me into horror in the first place. So I’m very glad to see that the team behind In Search of Darkness has decided to turn their full attention to the slasher sub-genre with the new 4+ hour documentary Slasher Trash, which is available for pre-order until August 14th at slashertrashdoc.com. You can watch the trailer for the documentary in the embed above.

‘I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer’ – The Franchise’s Supernatural Sequel
Image
“Copycat” gets thrown around a lot when discussing the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, yet perhaps a more accurate descriptor is “opportunist.” The film was, in fact, rushed into production in light of Scream‘s success, but Kevin Williamson’s script dates farther back. And unlike Williamson’s first collaboration with Wes Craven, I Know What You Did Last Summer channeled traditional slashers rather than deconstructed them.

Despite a straightforward approach in a postmodern era of horror, I Know ended up being fully digested by pop culture. Comedies Scary Movie and Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th spoofed the original film without mercy, MADtv conceived a Christmas-themed parody, and the direct sequel didn’t even take itself too seriously. So it would seem as if a third Summer was unnecessary. That is, until the idea came up again in 2005 (and after a...

Trick Or Treat Limited Edition 4K Uhd + Blu-ray: "From the early days of DVD, one movie more than any other has been requested by horror fans and metal heads all over: Charles Martin Smith’s heavy metal horror classic Trick Or Treat. A box office disappointment that found a wide following on home video and cable in the 80s and 90s, it’s been curiously out of reach to fans, who would rely on dubious DVDs and imports to get their Halloween heavy horror treat. Now, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films are finally bringing the much-anticipated Trick Or Treat to your door in a definitive Limited Edition 4K Uhd/Blu-ray that will make every day Halloween for horror fanatics and headbangers!

We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, will be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. Pre-orders can now be made through the Synapse Films website, DiabolikDVD, and Orbit DVD – and copies are expected to start shipping out next week! This release is limited to just 6,666 units with a suggested retail price of $66.66, and as of right now there are no plans for a standard edition release.

Image
Rock ‘n’ roll never dies. Sometimes, it even gets a second life. At least that’s the case for 1986 cult horror favorite Trick or Treat, as Synapse Films has delivered a surprise Halloween treat by launching preorders for the horror film’s 4K world premiere.

The limited special edition 4K release of Trick or Treat is strictly limited to a total of 6666 units!

The good news is that preorders are open now, with the release shipping as soon as next week, October 27.

The first feature from award-winning filmmaker Charles Martin Smith (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), the film featured a cast of soon to be household names including Marc Price (“Family Ties”) and Doug Savant (“Melrose Place”). Alongside rock icons Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne, Trick or Treat blends the best of the 1980s metal scene with the decade’s tongue and cheek take on the genre.

Mike Flanagan says Oculus started as a rip off of Stephen King’s 1408
Image
Genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan has brought feature film adaptations of the Stephen King novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep to the screen, and recently wrapped up post-production on a feature adaptation of the King short story The Life of Chuck. His production company Intrepid Pictures is currently developing a TV series adaptation of King’s epic The Dark Tower saga for Amazon’s Prime Video. For a while, he was also set to make a movie based on King’s novel Revival, but that fell apart. But one King story he wanted to bring to the screen and never got the chance to work on was the short story 1408, which served as the basis for a 2007 film that was directed by Mikael Håfström from a screenplay by Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski, and starred John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. Flanagan missed out on 1408, but...

Mike Flanagan Admits He 'Ripped Off' Stephen King for This 2013 Horror Hit
Image
Its no secret that writer/director Mike Flanagan is one of the biggest Stephen King fans around, and now the creator of such King adaptations as Geralds Game and Doctor Sleep has revealed that he "ripped off" the King short story '1408' for his 2013 hit movie Oculus. First published in 1999 in the audiobook collection Blood and Smoke, '1408' found its way into print in the 2002 collection Everythings Eventual. It would go on to receive a vastly underrated film adaptation in 2007, which was directed by Mikael Hfstrm and starred John Cusak as Mike Enslin, a skeptical paranormal researcher who finds himself trapped in a haunted hotel room for one night.

Speaking with Fangoria editor Michael Gingold during Fantasia Fest (via IndieWire), Flanagan touched on a number of topics, including his 2013 film Oculus, starring Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites. The project first began as a short film in 2006, a...

Mike Flanagan Reveals Interesting Secret About The Haunting Of Hill House
Image
Mike Flanagan reveals The Haunting of Hill House was inspired by his 2013 film Oculus. Both Oculus and The Haunting of Hill House tackle family trauma and feature time jumps. The series mirrors Oculus in its approach to family dynamics, and skepticism about the supernatural.

Mike Flanagan reveals an interesting secret about The Haunting of Hill House and how its similar to one of his previous films. The horror limited series, based on Shirley Jacksons 1959 novel, explores the Crain family and their dealings with the supernatural house, the terrifying Red Room, and the tragedy that befell their mother Olivia (Carla Gugino). Along with Gugino, the cast of The Haunting of Hill House includes Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Kate Siegel, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Victoria Pedretti, Henry Thomas, and Timothy Hutton.

While speaking with Michael Gingold at Fantasia Fest (via IndieWire), Flanagan revealed that when it came to making The Haunting of Hill House,...

Mike Flanagan Finally Admits ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ Is Really Just ‘Oculus’ for 10 Hours
Image
If your formula for a tragic intergenerational family drama turned kaleidoscopic ghost story ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So says horror heavyweight Mike Flanagan, who got candid when accepting the Cheval Noir career award at the opening weekend of Fantasia Fest (July 18 to August 4) in Montreal.

In a Q&a with Fangoria editor Michael Gingold, Flanagan was asked about the key to adapting the great literary works of horror authors like Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, and Edgar Allan Poe. The multi-hyphenate storyteller, who made the leap from writer/director at Intrepid Pictures to showrunner at Netflix in 2018 (but has since moved to an overall deal at Amazon), pointed out the structural similarities between his beloved indie features and his most successful prestige streaming projects.

“‘The Haunting of Hill House’ was an interesting case because that was brought to me,” Flanagan explained of his early meetings with Amlin Publishing,...

In 1997, director Mike Mendez and co-writer/star Dave Larsen collaborated on the brutal, uncompromising and wickedly funny Killers, a movie that divided audiences at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival but then had a hard time finding an audience due to scattershot distribution. Abigail’s Debut Score on Rotten Tomatoes & Early Reviews Are Scary Good
Image
Abigail registers 85% on the Tomatometer against 13 reviews, at the time of this writing. The young actress portraying the vampire ballerina, Alisha Weir, shines, effortlessly switching from terrified to savage, and delivers a commanding performance on screen. Critics praise Abigail for being extremely bloody, fun, humorous and fresh; setting the bar high as the most enjoyable horror movie of the year.

The vampire ballerina is ready to play with her food and make some noise at the box office. Universal Pictures’ Abigail officially drops in theaters on April 19, but the critics are already sinking their teeth — not fangs — into the upcoming horror film. And, at the time of this writing, those reactions have resulted in a scary good score on Rotten Tomatoes. Abigail currently registers 85% against 13 reviews on the Tomatometer. Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting writes:

With an insane commitment to arterial spray and an enthusiastic ensemble, Abigail winds up another crowd-pleaser from [Matt] Bettinelli-Olpin and [Tyler] Gillett.

Severin Brings ‘Nightmares in a Damaged Brain’ to 4K with Most Complete Version of the 1981 Movie Ever Assembled
Image
The controversial 1981 horror movie Nightmare – also known as Nightmares in a Damaged Brain – is coming back to life on 4K Uhd from Severin Films, Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report this afternoon. The film has been scanned from the internegative and various foreign print sources to create the most complete version ever assembled!

Severin is also publishing a 193 page novelization of the film, written by Rue Morgue’s Michael Gingold, based on the original screenplay by Romano Scavolini.

It’s been called “graphic and unapologetic” (SexGoreMutants), “brutally effective” (Screen Rant) and “a forgotten classic” (Horror News). It remains the most reviled, controversial and misunderstood genre film of the ‘80s. Now “the most repulsive, degrading and horrifying movie ever made” (NY Daily News) can be experienced like never before.

When a homicidal mental patient (an enduringly disturbing performance by Baird Stafford) flees an experimental drug program, he’ll leave a 5-day trail...

Vinegar Syndrome 10th Anniversary – 10 Hidden Gems You Need to Watch!
Image
Aptly named for the acidic smell of deteriorating film, Vinegar Syndrome made an auspicious debut in 2013 with its inaugural release, The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. In the decade since, they have unearthed, restored, and distributed hundreds of cult, exploitation, horror, action, and adult films.

Popping in a new Vinegar Syndrome disc is a bit like cinematic Russian roulette. It’s always interesting, but you never know if you’re going to get an obscure masterpiece, a campy B-movie, a so-bad-it’s-good slice of fun, or a dud. The unknown is half the fun, and discovering those diamonds in the rough makes it worthwhile.

In celebration of their anniversary, I’m highlighting 10 hidden gems from Vinegar Syndrome’s first 10 years.

To narrow the choices, I’m ignoring the heavy hitters like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 and The Amityville Horror, box sets like Forgotten Gialli and Home Grown Horrors,...

‘Creature from Black Lake’ – Synapse Rediscovers a Hidden Bigfoot Gem from the 1970s
Image
Despite being the most well-known cryptid, Bigfoot has surprisingly few horror movies dedicated to it – and even fewer that are worth seeking out. After the infamous Patterson–Gimlin film purportedly captured footage of the creature in 1967, a spate of Bigfoot movies surfaced in the ’70s.

Although not the first, 1972’s The Legend of Boggy Creek is generally considered the best and most influential of the era. I was of that mindset before discovering 1976’s Creature from Black Lake via Synapse Films’ upcoming Blu-ray. While it’s certainly indebted to Boggy Creek for paving the way, Black Lake eschews the docudrama setup in favor of a traditional film narrative.

Shot on location in the Shreveport, LA area, the film follows University of Chicago students Pahoo and Rives on a school-funded expedition down south in an effort to prove the existence of the legendary bipedal primate.

They encounter several colorful locals, including...

How The Mist Made Acting Opposite A CGI Monster Feel Believable
Image
There are two short stories by Stephen King that have probably resonated the most with me over the years, and they're both contained in the same collection, "Skeleton Crew," released in 1985. "The Jaunt" is a sci-fi horror tale where teleportation, or "jaunting," has become the preferred method of travel in the future. The process is instantaneous for the physical body, but the mind needs to be put to sleep in order to have a successful trip. Unfortunately, a precocious kid named Ricky decides to stay awake during a journey to Mars, only to come out the other side after seemingly aging thousands of years. To the shock and horror of his waiting parents, Ricky has suffered a mental breakdown after experiencing an endless eternity of time. "The Jaunt" explores the dreadfulness of vastness horror, where King's short story "The Mist" taps into the dimensional rifts found in cosmic horror and...

Image
For the first official week of horror and sci-fi home media releases in the month of April, we don’t have a ton of titles coming out, but the ones that are being released on April 5th are a pretty damn good bunch of movies all the same. Probably the biggest movie arriving on multiple formats this Tuesday is Scream (2022) from the Radio Silence crew, so if you missed it in theaters, now is the perfect opportunity to be able to catch up with everything that happened in Woodsboro.

Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for April 5th include a 4K edition of I Spit on Your Grave (1978), The Long Night, Vicious Fun, The Ice Demon, a 2-Movie Scream collection, and 60 Seconds to Live!

‘Don’t Go in the House’ Blu-ray Review (Arrow Video)
Image
Stars: Dan Grimaldi, Charles Bonet, Bill Ricci, Ruth Dardick | Written by Joseph Ellison, Ellen Hammill, Joe Masefield | Directed by Joseph Ellison

One of the many films that were tangled up in the video nasty debacle of the early 80s, Don’t Go In The House tells the story of Donny, a somewhat disturbed man who lives under the thumb of his overbearing and sadistic (in the sense that she likes to burn his arms on the stove) mother. That is until his mother passes away and Donny’s already disturbed psyche finally cracks. Living only with the voices in his head, Donny seeks out female companionship, only his idea of bringing a girl home to meet mother entails tying them up in his steel-walled burning chamber!

Don’t Go In the House is a film clearly inspired by Psycho, yet it shares very familiar traits with William Lustig’s Maniac and De...

Ad Nauseam: Newsprint Nightmares from the ’70s and ’80s

1984 Publishing, October 5, 2021

Michael Gingold (Author), Joe Dante (Foreword)

Ballyhoo, the art of selling the public something they don’t want, has never changed—but like the devil it has assumed many disguises. In the 19th century small towns were inundated with colorful broadsides, barn-sized murals promoting the arrival of the circus or a traveling vaudeville show. The 20th century made do with the daily newspaper’s theater section—all in black and white but jam-packed with exciting possibilities. Today we have Twitter and your neighbor’s cousin’s friend on Facebook. That’s not exactly progress.

The movie advertisements of a not-too-distant yesterday were called ad mats. They permeated the entertainment sections of the dailies, crammed together side by side like post-war housing developments. They were in close competition for our undivided attention so the artwork was designed to attract—and shock—the most jaundiced soul.
