Christ Figures and Crossdressers: ‘The Nico Mastorakis Collection’ from Arrow Video
Image
Nico Mastorakis has an uncanny ability of pulling ideas from various sources and running them through the Cuisinart of his peculiar sensibility, producing something altogether idiosyncratic. The six films assembled in Arrow Video’s new box set—one evocative religious allegory and five bawdy action comedies—testify to Mastorakis’s skills as a pop-cultural bricoleur. As a result, they serve as a series of variably amusing time capsules, deploying plenty of medium-specific references that might just delight viewers who came of age in the 1980s and early ’90s. Others will have to spend some time doing due diligence on Wikipedia.

The Time Traveler, from 1984, stars Keir Dullea as a man who fell to Earth, found naked along the Mykonos shore by expat American widow Andrea (Adrienne Barbeau). The new arrival soon names himself Glenn (as in astronaut John Glenn) and proceeds to learn the ways of the world. Unsurprisingly, a...

Patrick J. Adams' Upcoming Crime Show Can Deliver The Story Suits Failed To
Image
Patrick J. Adams' role in Accused could allow him to be the bad guy Mike Ross never was in Suits. Adams plays Pete in Accused season 2, a potentially nefarious character in the crime drama. Accused takes twists and turns, so, Adams' character in the episode could be the guilty party.

After starring as Mike Ross in Suits for more than seven seasons, Patrick J. Adams is set to appear in a different drama TV show, and, hopefully, he will get the chance to play the type of character that Mike never could be. The USA Network series, created by Aaron Korsh, ran for nine seasons before ending in September 2019. Four years later, though, Suits had a resurgence when added to Netflix, resulting in a new spinoff, which Adams won't star in as a series regular. Nevertheless, Adams will continue his legal/crime drama career in Accused season 2 on Fox.

In Honor of ‘Twisters’ Release, Glen Powell Pays Tribute to Predecessor and Former Co-Star, Bill Paxton
Image
Turns out Glen Powell may have deeper connections to the “Twister” franchise than you might think. Before he burst onto the scene with supporting roles in films like “Everybody Wants Some!!” and “Hidden Figures,” Powell was the lead of an independent romantic western from 2013 called “Red Wing” that co-starred fellow Texan actor and lead of the original “Twister,” Bill Paxton. The two bonded during the making of the film, with Paxton’s character serving as somewhat of a mentor to Powell’s and the relationship carrying on into real life.

In a recent interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” speaking on working with Paxton, Powell said, “I shot this movie called ‘Red Wing’ years and years ago, and Bill and I became really close on that movie.”

Powell also shared with Colbert the impact the original “Twister” had on him growing up in Texas. Speaking to the late-night host,...

Image
Making a movie can be very difficult, and Kevin Costner found that out the hard way while filming the 2016 historical drama, Hidden Figures. The actor recently revealed that while shooting the movie, he was being treated for kidney stones, and required a morphine drip throughout filming to handle the pain.

In an interview with People, the acclaimed movie star reflected on his experience working on Hidden Figures, and what he had to overcome to deliver his performance. Costner plays the head of NASA's Space Task Group, Al Harrison, a fictional composite character. Unfortunately for the acclaimed actor, Costner had to film most of his scenes in intense pain after developing kidney stones. "I've never worked drunk on a set. I've never worked high on a set, but I was on morphine the last two weeks that I worked on [Hidden Figures]," Costner said.

License to Kill Is the Gritty James Bond Movie That Changed the Series Forever
Image
Secret agents going rogue is such a common trope that sometimes we wish that people like Ethan Hunt or Jason Bourne would just follow their orders for change. When Daniel Craig started playing James Bond in 2006, it seemed like Bond went rogue on nearly every single mission, including most of Quantum of Solace, at least half of Skyfall, and basically, the first two-thirds of No Time To Die. Pierce Brosnan’s Bond went rogue in Die Another Day, too, with a full beard and no shirt, declaring “I’m checking out” from a hospital. And of course, Connery’s Bond was on an unsanctioned revenge mission at the start of Diamonds Are Forever.

But the most compelling Bond-goes-rogue movie of them all to this day remains Licence to Kill, which in 1989, would become the unintended swan song from Timothy Dalton’s fierce take on the character.

On June 13 of that year,...

Hit Man Cast & Character Guide: Who Else Stars Alongside Glen Powell

Hit Man boasts a strong cast led by Glen Powell, offering a fresh take on undercover operations with hilarious aliases. Hit Man's other main cast members include Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio, and Retta. Supporting cast members in Hit Man range from Sanjay Rao to Molly Bernard.

Richard Linklater's Hit Man sports a strong cast, led perfectly by Glen Powell. In comparison to many of Linklater's other movies, Hit Man's cast is relatively small-scale. This could be because of the film's premise, which sees Glen Powell's titular Hit Man take on different aliases. Powell's eccentric personalities throughout the film mark a star turn for the actor and aids Hit Man in becoming one of the strongest 2024 films and one of the best movies in Richard Linkater's career.

Hidden Figures Editor Calls Out Glen Powell's Claims About The Film's Rough Cut
Image
Hidden Figures is based on the true story of three African-American mathematicians' crucial work at NASA during the Space Race. Actor Glen Powell felt his performance in the film was terrible, but editor Peter Teschner disagrees, praising his solid performance. Despite initial criticism, Hidden Figures was a critical and commercial success, receiving multiple award nominations and high praise.

The Oscar-nominated historical drama Hidden Figures recently received some criticism from star Glen Powell, who played real-life astronaut John Glenn, but it seems that someone who doesn't agree with the actor's comments is editor Peter Teschner. Last month, Powell spoke about his reaction to seeing a rough cut of the film, which he said caused him to throw up due to his performance in what was a bare-bones presentation of the film without any special effects or music. However, the film's editor, Peter Teschner, doesn't recall seeing a rough cut with missing...

Writers Sound Off About Litigious ‘Seal Team’ Staffer Who Claims He Lost Gig Because He Was White & Male

A lawsuit filed by a Seal Team script coordinator and freelancer who claims he was denied a writing position because he’s a straight white guy has already struck a chord with fellow scribes.

Glen Powell: Getting the Credit He Deserves
Image
When Top Gun: Maverick was released, there was a running joke on Twitter that Glen Powell's parents had seen Top Gun: Maverick in theaters a total of fourteen times, elated that their son was playing a character on the big screen right. Powell tweeted that this movie was making his parents go broke, but it was all in good fun. Powell played Lieutenant Jake Serensin, his call sign "Hangman", a cocky pilot who found himself in a rivalry with another pilot played by Miles Teller, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw. Top Gun: Maverick took the world by storm in 2022 and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

Glen Powell as Hangman was a great choice for the film, but MSN states that Powell wasn't entirely thrilled about the character. Powell commented on the first draft of the script and made a statement regarding the lack of character development Hangman had.

16 Best Frasier Cameos That Aren't From Cheers
Image
Most of the cameos in Frasier were celebrity callers on Frasier's radio show, and some main and supporting characters from Cheers also appeared in singular episodes. The cameos in Frasier spanned across different seasons and included actors such as Robbie Coltrane, known for playing Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, and Laura Linney, who had a regular role as Frasier's love interest, Charlotte Connor. Many other famous faces made cameos in the beloved sitcom Frasier, including Richard E. Grant, Patrick Stewart, Sarah Silverman, Linda Hamilton, Michael Keaton, John Hannah, Dr. Phil, Bill Gates, John Glenn, Bob Hoskins, Teri Hatcher, Brian Cox, Jennifer Tilly, and Rosie Perez.

There were hundreds of famous cameos throughout the run of Frasier, but a much smaller number of them were not Cheers characters or radio callers. The original Frasier series ran for 11 seasons, from 1993 through 2004. Over those 11 years, a flurry of famous faces encountered the titular radio psychiatrist.

What Patrick J. Adams Has Been Doing Since Suits
Image
A common thing in movies and television is that actors play a character so well they become known for them. This is especially true if the actor wasn't well known before, and most of their fans first met them when they performed this role. Some extreme examples include Daniel Radcliff, who played Harry Potter in eight movies and from his early teen years to adulthood. However, cases like this are rare. That's more common in television, as a series can go on for multiple seasons and usually focuses on one or a few characters. The series Suits is a great example of that.

Suits is a television show about Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht). They form an unlikely partnership when Mike proves to Harvey he is one of the best lawyers he has ever met — even if he didn't go to law school. Harvey, a lawyer at a powerful firm,...

All nine seasons have been streaming on Peacock for far longer but Netflix, as the biggest streaming service, tends to drive the most attention. Per Nielsen, Suits has already broken its own streaming record with 3.7 billion minutes viewed the first week of July and viewership intensity doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

The potential reasons for Suits‘ surge in popularity are manyfold. While the dual WGA and Sga strikes shouldn’t have led to an extended pause in summer content in theory, some studios have juggled their schedules a bit to weather the storm for the fall season. Additionally, Suits‘ basic cable format...

Twisters Cast & Character Guide - Which Top Gun: Maverick Actor Stars In The New Disaster Movie
Image
After waiting nearly 30 years for a sequel, the cast for Twisters has been announced - and it features some big names. The original Twister follows a pair of married storm chasers who put themselves at the mercy of dust storms and tornadoes to implement a new weather alert system. The film was a box office triumph, grossing around $500 million (via Screen Rant), with a good deal of this success often attributed to Twister’s memorable ensemble cast that boasts Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Cary Elwes among its members. Judging from everything known about Twisters, Universal is pulling out all the stops to match this success in the sequel.

Twisters has been in development for a long time, with numerous writers and directors considered before Universal finally landed on Minari director Lee Isaac Chung and The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith. The project is still shrouded in rumors,...

Suits Cast & Character Guide
Image
Running on the USA Network for nine seasons, the legal drama Suits featured a diverse array of cast members from established actors to future stars. Set in New York City, Suits follows the exploits of Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a smooth talker who manages to work his way into a job at a prestigious law firm despite not going to law school. Deftly blending its fast-paced courtroom action with its gripping character drama, Suits proved to be a big hit for the USA Network and elevated itself above the usual legal procedurals. Over its decade on the air, the cast of Suits remained its most compelling element.

Garnering overwhelming praise during its lengthy run, Suits never lacked excitement as the story not only tackled the ins and outs of high-pressure law but put the characters' personal lives on full display. Often ranked among the best lawyer shows of all time,...

‘The Hurt Unit,’ ‘Judgement,’ ‘Keeping It Together,’ ‘Public Defenders’ Pilots Not Moving Forward at ABC
Image
Pilots for “The Hurt Unit,” “Public Defenders,” “Judgement” and “Keeping It Together” (which was formerly titled “Drop-Off”) are no longer moving forward at ABC.

The news comes amid the ongoing writers strike taking hold of Hollywood. The Writers Guild of America decided to strike on May 2 after failing to reach an agreement on issues like wages and protections against AI.

The medical procedural drama was ordered in December and starred Ben McKenzie. Per the official logline, the show is “a cutting-edge medical drama about a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. When the sick and the injured can’t get to the ER, the Hurt Unit (Hospital Urgent Response Team) brings the ER to them.”

Matt Lopez and John Glenn co-wrote the pilot for “The Hurt Unit,” with both serving as executive producers.

ABC Pilot Watch: Comedies ‘Public Defenders’ & ‘Motherland’ Remake ‘Keeping It Together’ & Dramas ‘The Hurt Unit’ & ‘Judgement’ Not Moving Forward
Image
ABC is passing on its pilots.

The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.

The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.

Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

American Hero And Astronaut John Glenn Dies at 95
“The Beatles were eight months away from releasing their first single, “Love Me Do,” when John Glenn rocketed into space on Feb. 20, 1962, to become the first American to orbit Earth.

The flight set Nasa on course to meet ever-more ambitious goals. Glenn’s three orbits in five hours was eclipsed on the next flight and each one afterward steadily pushed Americans further out from the cradle of Earth, ultimately leading to a series of landings on the moon from 1969 to 1972.

“The whole program shifted rapidly from, ‘Can we do this?’ to basic research,” Glenn told a packed press conference conducted among the displays and consoles that made up Cape Canaveral’s Mercury control center.” – Nasa

Former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn died Thursday at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.

Mindy Newell’s Mind Rumblings
Various and sundry thoughts from the mind of Mindy this week:

The USS Enterprise (Cvn-65), the eighth U.S. Navy vessel to bear that name, was decommissioned this week after 50 years of service. The world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier made her maiden voyage on January 12, 1962 and her first mission was tracking and monitoring the first orbital flight of Project Mercury, with Lt. Col. John Glenn aboard the Friendship 7 capsule. In popular culture, the Enterprise was the home base of Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) in Top Gun, with the late director Tony Scott filming and incorporating flight deck operations into the film, and it was the flagship of the U.S. Navy fleet participating in The Hunt For Red October.

Then, of course, there is Star Trek – and did you know that Gene Roddenberry’s original starship name was the USS Yorktown? But the fame and status of...

Obama has entertainers like Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, George Clooney, Beyonce and Jay-z.

Romney's supporters include Clint Eastwood, musicians Kid Rock and Lee Greenwood and comedian Dennis Miller. Often the Democratic ticket attracts younger and glitzier stars.

Both campaigns have spent huge amounts of time and effort making sure their rallies feature opening acts that reinforce a campaign message, whether it's the economy, health care, veterans or some other issue.

Nicklaus, who now designs golf courses, teed up Romney at a campaign event near Columbus, Ohio.

The golfer said he's had...

The president said he found Dylan's music transcendant, claiming it led to his "world opening up, because [Dylan] captured something about this country that was so vital."

Dylan was one of 13 to receive the Medal of Freedom on Tuesday, including former astronaut and Senator John Glenn, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former University of Tennessee women's basketball head coach Pat Summitt.

Undead Tech: Space Tourism
Recently, Virgin mogul Richard Branson unveiled the SpaceShipTwo, the world's first commercial space-plane. With three bodies, five hybrid rocket engines, and (apparently) zero room for spaces in its title, the SpaceShipTwo will carry passengers 70 miles above the earth and give them five minutes of weightlessness before returning them to earth $200,000 lighter. Flights start in 2010.

Virgin is getting into space tourism just as their only competitor, the Russian space agency RosCosmos, is getting out.

In fact, even Nasa is done with sending humans to space; they've grounded all their space shuttles and are asking astronauts to hitch their way to the International Space Station with the Russians until 2015, when their new space jitney is ready. (With American astronauts on board their Soyuz rockets, there's no room for civilian customers, the Russians say.)

That leaves the Virgin plane (its components diagrammed above) way out in front of an industry that a lot...
