10 Biggest MCU Deaths In 2024
Image
Warning! Spoilers for all MCU content released in 2024

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen some dramatic death scenes throughout 2024, with a few particularly shocking ends being met by various characters. Compared to previous years, 2024 has been quite light on Marvel releases, with only a single feature film, Deadpool & Wolverine, gracing theaters under the red banner thanks to a variety of delays. Other than that, spin-off series like Agatha All Along, Echo, and X-Men '97 have been the only source of Marvel deaths for the year.

Despite how few projects the MCU released in 2024, the year was still plenty bloody, with a higher-than-average fatality rate across what releases did premiere. While not too many long-running characters from previous phases met their demise in 2024, that's not to say that the deaths of newly-introduced players weren't significant in the grand scheme of the series. Be they genuinely tragic or played for laughs, the...

Agatha All Along Showrunner Addresses The Show's Most "Unfair" Death After Backlash & The Scene She Almost Cut
Image
Marvel Studios alum Jac Schaeffer explains why one Agatha All Along character had to be killed off so soon after their MCU introduction. Agatha Harkness' quest into the Witches' Road claimed multiple victims before the coven finished their journey in the Agatha All Along finale. Debra Jo Rupp's Sharon Davis, Patti LuPone's Lilia Calderu, Ali Ahn's Alice Wu-Gulliver, and Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness herself died throughout Agatha All Along's nine episodes.

Speaking to Empire, Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer recalls the moment she realized Alice Wu-Gulliver wouldn't make it out alive of the Witches' Road. Although Schaeffer regretted killing off Alice,

"It is really sad, and it feels unfair. I know that's been the reaction of viewers, and I understand that, and sort of feel it myself. But it's a show about death. It was an imperative to take that seriously, and feel both...

'She's Not a Good Guy': Agatha All Along Creator Explains Why Finale Doesn't Redeem Agatha
Image
Though Agatha Harkness is seemingly a well-intentioned protagonist in Agatha All Along, specifically thanks to its ending, the Marvel Cinematic Universe show's creator insists she's no hero. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer claims Kathryn Hahn's eponymous character is "not a good guy" as she explains the meaning behind the final sequences of the hit series.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Schaeffer clarified the ending to Agatha All Along Season 1, Episode 9, "Maiden Mother Crone," where Agatha made the ultimate sacrifice by submitting to Rio Vidal/Death (Aubrey Plaza) to spare Billy Maximoff/Wiccan (Joe Locke). Though Agatha's act seemingly humanized her as a loving mother willing to risk everything to save Billy given her maternal affection for her, Schaeffer insisted Agatha has and never will be a good person.

Kathryn Hahn Addresses Agatha All Along's 'Subversive and Radical' Ending
Image
The following contains spoilers for Agatha All Along, now streaming on Disney+.

Agatha All Along ended on a more small-scale note, but for Kathryn Hahn, that's what made it work.

In a Los Angeles Times profile, Hahn talked about her extensive acting portfolio and how she entered the world of Marvel through Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and WandaVision, leading to her acclaimed Agatha Harkness spinoff. The series concluded with both a flashback detailing Agatha's tragic relationship with her son Nicholas Sparks and a tease of her ghostly future alongside Billy Maximoff, with Hahn joking she's "blessedly" unaware of reactions to the finale despite recently starting an Instagram page. Yet she praised the quality of the finale, loving "how subversive and radical it felt to have an ending, especially a big Marvel show, be that small and tender and have this little beating heart."

Kathryn Hahn Gives Uncertain Update About Her Future as Agatha Harkness in the MCU
Image
Besides an appearance in What If...? Season 3, Agatha Harkness' future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains unclear. Kathryn Hahn, who portrays the fan-favorite MCU villain, recently opened up about how she feels about Agatha All Along possibly being the end for her character.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Hahn shared that she has yet to have any conversations about her future in the MCU. Agatha All Along's two-part finale saw the titular witch helping Billy/Wiccan (Joe Locke) locate his missing brother Tommy's soul and place it in the body of a drowning boy before sacrificing herself to save Billy from Death. The Disney+ limited series, which serves as both a sequel and spinoff of 2021's WandaVision, ended with Billy and Agatha setting out to find Tommy, leaving the door open for the story to continue in a possible Season 2.

The MCU Has Been Showing You The Answer To What Happened To Nicolas Scratch Since 2021 According To Agatha All Along Theory
Image
Nicholas Scratch's history was explored in Agatha All Along, but one hidden detail suggests Marvel Studios already explained exactly what happened to him back in Phase 4's WandaVision. Kathryn Hahn's return as Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along revealed more about the original Salem witch, including her long-running romance and rivalry with Aubrey Plaza's Death, her Witches' Road scheme and the existence of her son, Nicholas Scratch. While Agatha All Along's finale explained what happened to Nicholas Scratch, there's one mystery the MCU hasn't addressed.

Agatha Harkness was not the only WandaVision character to return in Agatha All Along, as Agatha's new witch coven formed in Westview, New Jersey, allowing Debra Jo Rupp's Sharon Davis, David Payton's John Collins and Emma Caulfield's Sarah Proctor to also come back. Alongside them, Amos Glick also reprised his role from WandaVision, where he was known as...

'Agatha All Along' Proved Some Fans Wrong
Image
Quick Links 'Agatha All Along' Looked to Be Different Fans Don't Always Know What Is Right The MCU Has Worked Because It Knows How to Balance Old and New Fans

When Marvel Studios first announced plans for Agatha All Along, then titled Agatha House of Harkness, on Disney+ Day in November 2021, the general fan responses tended to be "Why" or "Who asked for this?". Kathryn Hahn's depiction of Agatha Harkness was no doubt popular with fans, but many questioned the idea of why Marvel Studios would give a supporting character in a television series with not much of a fanbase in the comics her own television show as opposed to a more prominent name. Just months before Agatha All Along debuted, some said it would be the "least watched MCU series ever" and a sign that the MCU was going downhill because they were oversaturating the market...

10 MCU Movies & Shows Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch Could Appear In After Her 2025 Return
Image
Elizabeth Olsen is coming back as a version of the Scarlet Witch in the next year, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has many exciting movies and series that would make sense for Wanda Maximoff to appear. Olsen's Marvel character was last seen in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which had the Scarlet Witch seemingly die. Then, Agatha All Along teased that Wanda could return in future MCU projects, especially since the show featured one of her sons, Billy Maximoff.

The Scarlet Witch's MCU journey is likely far from over, as Olsen wants to return as the character, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently commented on Scarlet Witch's MCU return, saying, "We are excited to find out when and how Scarlet Witch can return." Adding to that, Wanda will already be back in 2025, with Olsen set to play a different version of the character in the animated series Marvel Zombies.

Agatha All Along's Lady Death and Her Powers, Explained
Image
The ninth and final episode of the popular Disney+ miniseries Agatha All Along, concluded on October 30, 2024, finally bringing dramatic closure for Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and her wicked Westview ways. Although the anticipated WandaVision spin-off was conceived as a single-season one-off advancing the McU's Phase Five, fans would love to see more of Rio Vidal, played by the inimitable Aubrey Plaza.

Rio Vidal is introduced as Agatha's former romantic partner, only to reveal her real identity as Lady Death in episode 7, "Death's Hand in Mine." Despite being limited by only two episodes to flex her full might and showcase the full gamut of her superhuman powers, Lady Death's mythological lore stems from the pages of Marvel Comics. If Lady Death gets a spin-off series, here's how the morbid Marvel villain will use her killer powers to extend her supernatural reign.

Agatha All Along's Future May Have Just Been Confirmed With an Awards Season Push
Image
The hit Marvel Disney Plus series Agatha All Along may go for another stroll down the Witches' Road, as the studios plans for awards season seemingly reveal that the show is no longer a miniseries. While Agatha All Along was marketed as a one-and-done limited series, the show will be submitted in the comedy categories for the upcoming Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and the Emmy Awards under the Marvel Television Studios banner, Variety has learned. Which, due to a technicality in the submission requirements, could suggest that a second season is on the cards.

The be considered in the limited series categories, as stated by the Television Academys criteria, a show must tell a complete, non-recurring story and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons. Agatha All Along not qualifying is a pretty big hint that Marvel is not done with Kathryn Hahns Agatha Harkness: and Joe Lockes Billy Maximoff.

These Character Deaths in Agatha All Along Are Permanent
Image
One thing any fan of the superhero genre knows is that while a character seemingly will die, they will always come back to life. A common expression regarding comic book death was once, "No one stays dead except Bucky, Jason Todd, and Uncle Ben," but in 2005, both Bucky and Jason Todd were revived in the pages of the comics as The Winter Soldier and The Red Hood, respectively. This element of the comics has started to bleed into live-action, as both Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Superman & Lois killed Superman only to bring him back to life. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been good at keeping characters "dead," they have also skirted around this by bringing back variants from other dimensions. Yes, the Loki fans followed through the MCU is dead, but a variant with essentially the same backstory returned in the Disney+ series Loki.

'It Felt Far More Powerful': Agatha All Along Creator Explains Big Changes Made to 1 Comic Character's Story
Image
This article contains Major Spoilers for Agatha All Along Episode 9, "Maiden Mother Crone".

Agatha All Along took creative liberties with the canon, loosely adapting the lore from the comics. One character in the season finale was drastically changed to lend more emotional weight to Agatha's story.

Agatha All Along's finale wrapped up most of its characters' arcs while teasing Agatha and Billy's next journey. The show also fleshed out Agatha as a sympathetic villain in league with Killmonger, Vulture, and The Mandarin. Episode 9, "Maiden Mother Crone," confirmed a tragic arc in Agatha's backstory; a flashback sequence revealed she had a son who died at a young age, and like Wanda Maximoff, Agatha's grief fueled a rage that only left death in its wake. However, Agatha's son Nicky in the TV show is not the same character in the comics. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer told Variety that the drastic change made for a more compelling story.

Billy Maximoff's Wiccan Costume Details Reveal Connections To Scarlet Witch, Vision And The Character's Comics Suit

Wiccan's MCU costume reveal in Agatha All Along includes some sneaky references to his parents, Scarlet Witch and Vision. Agatha All Along's two-episode finale sees Billy Kaplan earn his full Wiccan costume, which he first wears after finishing the final trial in the Witches' Road. Wiccan's comic-accurate suit and hood were previously teased in WandaVision, where a young Billy Maximoff wore a Halloween version of the costume, as well as in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where a Wiccan statue foreshadowed the hero's arrival.

Agatha All Along Finale Review: Marvel's Most Surprising Show Sticks The Landing Without Any Cheap Tricks

Agatha All Along Two-Part Season Finale Makes Marvel History
Image
Agatha All Along is set to make MCU history with its upcoming season finale. Following its two-episode premiere on September 18, Agatha is Disney+'s big Halloween event series as it has played throughout spooky season and will wrap up on October 30, 2024, one day before Halloween. Agatha All Along has become one of the biggest hit series of 2024, and certainly one of the most talked about MCU Disney+ series in quite some time.

The Direct noted that Agatha All Along's two-part season finale will be the first time Marvel Studios and Disney+ have dropped two episodes for a finale. While the MCU has done two-episode premieres, like Agatha All Along, they typically only air one episode for the season finale. The only exception was Echo, which broke from convention when Disney+ dropped all five episodes at once on January 9, 2024.

Agatha All Along is the fourth Marvel Disney+ series with a two-episode premiere.

Agatha All Along Creator Confirms Three Iconic Films Inspired Episode 7

This article contains Major Spoilers for Agatha All Along Episode 7, "Death's Hand in Mine".

Agatha All Along gradually revealed Lilia's non-linear story arc. This comes to a head in Episode 7 with a fast-paced montage of time jumps.

Agatha All Along Episode 7 departed from its straightforward narrative to unravel Lilia Calderu's storyline. The show hinted at Lilia's unique arc since Episode 3, when her coven confused her catatonic state for a brief bout with dementia. Lilia's backstory in "Death's Hand in Mine" revealed her life experiences are not sequential; she's jumping at different points in life out of order and in real-time. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer told The Wrap she felt lucky and honored to direct the episode and its unconventional format. Scenes played out from Lilia's non-linear perspective and the challenge was to make her story cohesive. Schaeffer said a handful of inspirations grounded Episode 7's final act.

Paul Bettany Opens Up About Agatha All Along, Teases Vision Quest Connection

Marvel's Vision, Paul Bettany recently opened up about his take on Agatha All Along as well as his upcoming MCU series, Vision Quest. Bettany first started playing Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, playing supporting roles in subsequent crossover films before becoming a co-lead in WandaVision, despite his character's death in Avengers: Infinity War. The latter series followed Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, her husband Vision, and their twin sons, with the major twist being that the latter three were created by Wanda's reality-warping powers.

Major Agatha All Along Reveal Supports Exciting Avengers MCU Rumor

Agatha All Along's fifth episode might have lent some credibility to a recent rumor about the direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Agatha All Along topped the Disney+ global streaming charts, taking the number 1 spot from the pre-school-aimed Australian animated series Bluey, which has since become a worldwide phenomenon and has almost had a near-permanent hold on the top of the Disney+ charts. Additional information from Variety reveals that the first episode of Agatha All Along generated 9.3 million views on Disney+ in its first seven days of streaming.

'It's All Kathryn Hahn': Agatha All Along Creator Talks Bringing the MCU Character to Life
Image
Agatha All Along creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer recently discussed the series, revealing how she and Kathryn Hahn brought Agatha Harkness to life for the Disney+ series. The WandaVision head scribe helped create Hahn's iteration of the character for the original show before assuming full responsibility for Agatha's MCU progression.

In an interview with Marvel.com, Schaeffer discussed being impressed by Hahn's preparation and approach to portraying Agatha. "It wasn't really about seeing her do it. It was the early conversations, when we first started," she said. "Im familiar enough with her impressive body of work to know how funny she is and how ballsy and brassy and all of that. But I loved the questions that she asked and the way she unpacked the core of this woman." Though Agatha possesses many facets, which Hahn ably portrays, the showrunner wanted to focus on the witch's ferocity and savagery.

“Agatha All Along” has whipped up some impressive viewership in its first week on Disney+.

The Marvel TV series’ premiere episode has logged 9.3 million views globally on Disney+ within the first seven days of its release, according to internal Disney viewing data. Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by runtime.

While “Agatha All Along” kicked off to a relatively strong start, its viewership has already been exceeded by the “The Acolyte,” whose premiere episode reached 11.1 million views within its first five days of streaming on Disney+.

After the “Star Wars” spinoff series logged 4.8 million views on Disney+ within its first day of the streamer, its five-day viewership enabled “The Acolyte” to maintain its place as the streamer’s most-watched series premiere in 2024, though it was ultimately canceled.

Do You Need to Watch ‘WandaVision’ Before ‘Agatha All Along?’
Image
Kathryn Hahn has put a spell on the Marvel Cinematic Universe again. The celebrated actress earned an Emmy nomination and her own earworm signature song for her MCU debut as Agatha Harkness in “WandaVision” in 2021. Now, Hahn takes center stage in her spinoff, “Agatha All Along,” which follows a powerless Agatha and a mysterious teen (Joe Locke) down the witch’s road after he breaks her out of a powerful spell.

Do You Need to Watch ‘WandaVision’ Before Agatha All Along?

Honestly, yeah, you probably should. If you try to go into this show blind, you’re gonna be pretty baffled for the entirety of the first episode. But more than that, “WandaVision” introduced the core understanding of Hahn’s character that you’re supposed to have when you start “Agatha All Along.” Heck, if you haven’t seen “WandaVision, you won’t even get the song stuck in your...

Marvel TV Boss Addresses the Struggles of Picking Which Projects to Greenlight
Image
Fans have been fortunate enough to enjoy a plethora of Marvel Studios projects on the small screen. While series like WandaVision and Loki have been runaway hits, Brad Winderbaum, the company's Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, says choosing which projects get the greenlight is not the easiest task.

"We're developing more than we make now, so we actually have a few different things brewing that we might see through to at least a pilot script to see if we want to make it," Winderbaum told Screen Rant. "But, yeah, there's a lot of opportunity out there, it's hard to choose favorites. I'm a fan, so I want to make struggles about freaking everything, but we're really being careful about what we choose to do next," he said about the selection process.

Agatha All Along Favorably Compared to The Goonies by Star Joe Locke
Image
Agatha All Along is taking a page from The Goonies' playbook. Joe Locke, one of the stars of the latest Disney+ series from Marvel Studios, recently explained why the WandaVision spinoff is so similar to the beloved 1980s movie.

Speaking with Empire (via Deadline), Locke revealed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was the first to draw parallels between Agatha All Along and The Goonies. After showrunner Jac Schaeffer sent Feige a photo of Witches Road which is where Agatha and her coven must travel down to regain her power the Marvel boss reportedly stated, "Oh my God, were making The Goonies." Locke agreed with Feige, explaining, "Thats what Id been saying that we were making this adventure series." Based on Locke's comment, it looks like Agatha will send its title character on an adventure similar to the one the Goonies went on in the 1985 movie.

Agatha All Along Trailer Promises A Full-Blown Horror TV Series And Reveals The Scarlet Witch's MCU Status
Image
Disney+ has released the first trailer and poster for the next Marvel Television series, Agatha All Along. The WandaVision spin-off will premiere with two episodes on September 18 and it's fair to say the show is completely unlike anything we previously expected.

The sneak peek opens with Agatha Harkness seemingly trapped inside a police procedural, with Aubrey Plaza's unnamed character arriving to snap her out of the delusion the Scarlet Witch left her in.

Interestingly, the trailer appears to go some way in confirming that Wanda Maximoff is indeed dead following the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Marvel Studios also appears to be stopping short of doing anything more than hinting at her final fate.

There's a fair bit of horror in the trailer, with imagery which wouldn't be out of place in an R-Rated movie; whether that's an indication Agatha All Along will be...

Agatha All Along Still Reveals The Villain's "Covenless Witches" And A Returning Wandavision Character
Image
As expected, WandaVision eventually revealed that it had been "Agatha All Along." The Scarlet Witch put an end to her machinations, though, leaving the villain trapped inside her Agnes persona in Westview.

Agatha will somehow return this September in the appropriately titled Agatha All Along on Disney+ and, according to Head Writer Jac Schaeffer (WandaVision), she'll be joined by "a disparate, mixed bag of witches."

That includes Patti LuPone's Lilia, Sasheer Zamata's Jennifer, Debra Jo Rupp's Sharon, and Ali Ahn's Alice. We're not sure if that's a typo on Empire's part, but it seems there was more to Jo Rupp's Mrs. Hart than met the eye!

"What they have in common is that they’re covenless witches," Schaeffer adds. "Witches are defined by deception, treachery, villainy and selfishness. What do you do when you have a group of witches who [demonstrate] those notions and you need them to work together?...

Agatha made her debut in the Disney+ series ‘WandaVision’ as the nosy neighbor-turned-powerful witch who attempted to steal Wanda’s powers. ‘Agatha All Along’: Plot, Cast, Release Date & Everything We Know So Far
Image
Agatha debuted in the Disney+ series ‘WandaWision,’ as the nosy neighbour-turned-powerful witch who tried to steal Wanda’s powers. The two characters share a connection from the comics, with Agatha being one of the most powerful magic users in the Marvel Comics Universe.

It wasn’t surprising when it was decided that Agatha would get her own show, the first spinoff derived from ‘WandaVision.’ Now since the release date for ‘Agatha’ is getting closer we decided to summarize everything we know about the show.

Agatha will be on a quest to regain her powers

According to the official synopsis, and some subsequent rumors and leaks that happened, the show will focus on Agatha as she tries to regain her powers. After...

Marvel Studios Reveals Yet Another Agatha Title...And This Is By Far The Weirdest One Yet!
Image
When Marvel Studios first announced its WandaVision sequel, it was titled Agatha: House of Harkness. It then switched to Agatha: Coven of Chaos before becoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

Along the way, we've also seen evidence that it could be named Agatha All Along, Agatha: The Witches' Road, and Agnes of Westview, with the prevailing theory being that these are all episode titles and not the official final name of the Disney+ series.

Moments ago, Marvel Studios added another name to the mix by posting a logo to X which features Agatha: The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe.

That's one heck of a title, eh?

We'll see if this one sticks, but it's worth noting that as we write this, the studio has already removed the Tweet/X post in question. It's hard to believe this was sent out by mistake and the more likely possibility is it's yet another part...

Agatha: It Looks Like Marvel Studios Is Gearing Up To Begin Promoting The Wandavision Spin-Off
Image
With X-Men '97 in full swing on Disney+ and Deadpool & Wolverine fast approaching, will Marvel Studios soon pull back the curtain on WandaVision follow-up, Agatha?

That's the prevailing theory because the profile picture on WandaVision's social media accounts has just been updated with a splash of familiar purple. It doesn't give us much to go on, though we'd say there has to be some significance to this when Agatha Harkness remains trapped in Westview thanks to the Scarlet Witch!

We'd caution against getting too excited about an imminent reveal because it's previously been reported that Agatha is aiming for a September launch. Disney+ has also developed a frustrating habit of promising its MCU offerings surprisingly close to their respective premieres.

Despite it feeling like we've been waiting a long time for the series, things appear to be going well for a spin-off which has previously been dubbed "Agnes of Westview,...

The upcoming WandaVision spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness has received what fans can only hope is its final title change.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has officially retitled the hotly-anticipated Disney+ spinoff series Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. The show was originally announced in 2021 as Agatha: House of Harkness and retitled Coven of Chaos in 2022 before settling on its current subtitle, Darkhold Diaries. The name change comes amid a massive calendar shuffle for Marvel's upcoming slate of television series, which sees Agatha pushed from early 2024 to later that same year. The ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as well as Marvel's desire to make each of its titles an event, were listed as reasons for the delay.
