SyFy's 68% Rotten Tomatoes Sci-Fi Series Just Got an Out of This World Season 3 Update
Image
Gather around, science fiction fans, one of your favorite network shows is officially in production for Season 3. We're talking, of course, about The Ark, the SyFy show that has been an audience favorite since its premiere on the network in 2023. Despite receiving mixed reception from critics, The Ark has done enough to secure the interest of many and ultimately justify its return for a third season. Given the cliffhanger Season 2 ending, audiences are anticipating what could be next for Ark One and its crew, and they will be finding out soon enough as production is now in full swing for a 2026 premiere.

The latest update comes from SyFy's official X handle, where a video featuring two of its stars confirms that filming for Season 3 is underway. The clip sees Reece Ritchie, who plays Lt. Spencer Lane, and Christie Burke, who plays Captain Sharon Garnet, recording themselves as they take the...

Divisive SyFy Series 'The Ark' Gets Season 3 Update
Image
Only qualified individuals like astronauts are allowed to go into space. If you're rich, like Katy Perry, Gayle King and Jeff Bezos' new wife Lauren Sánchez, you can be launched up there unnecessarily, apparently. However, that's not the case for many people, so they watch science fiction productions with spacecraft and spaceships, like the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, and now SyFy's The Ark. The series premiered on February 1, 2023, and produced 24 episodes through two seasons, with a third set to release in 2026. News of the renewal was like music to fans of the SyFy show's ears; they'd been waiting for updates and finally got one from co-showrunner and executive producer Jonathan Glassner.

Without spoiling anything or giving too many details about what the series' viewers can expect from Season 3, a simple and straightforward image was posted on the show's official Instagram. The post, which also appeared on Glassner's page as a collab,...

How Many Times Did Daniel Jackson Die In Stargate?
Image
When it came time to turn Roland Emmerich's 1994 blockbuster "Stargate" into a TV series, "Stargate Sg-1" creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner were faced with recasting every character. Kurt Russell certainly wasn't going to come back as Jack O'Neill, the leader of the intrepid Stargate team, and neither was James Spader as Egyptologist and linguist Daniel Jackson. That meant Wright and Glassner had to start from square one when it came to the cast of their new show — though five actors from the movie actually did come back for one of the three main "Stargate" shows that sprang up in the wake of Emmerich's film. None of them, however, were main cast members.

After securing "Macgyver" star Richard Dean Anderson for the role of O'Neill, Wright and Glassner were evidently impressed with how well Canadian actor Michael Shanks could imitate James Spader, leading them to cast him in the role of Jackson.

The Characters With The Most Appearances In Stargate Sg-1
Image
It's a testament to the talents of everyone involved in "Stargate Sg-1" that it lasted for ten whole seasons before being cancelled by the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy). After all, there was no guarantee that just because Roland Emmerich's 1994 movie was a solid box office success, audiences would respond to a continuation series without Emmerich's involvement and which had lower production values and featured none of the central cast from the movie. Kurt Russell, who played Colonel Jack O'Neill in "Stargate," wasn't interested in "Sg-1." Neither was James Spader, who portrayed archaeologist Daniel Jackson in the movie.

You can imagine, then, that launching and maintaining a series under these conditions seemed like somewhat of a challenge. But showrunners Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner were confident enough that they could rise to it that they each independently pitched their version of a "Stargate" series to MGM Television, before being paired...

Stargate Sg-1's Co-Creator Wishes He Never Made One 'Silly' Decision
Image
After Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" proved a solid hit back in 1994, a TV series was created to continue the intergalactic adventures. Rather than leave fans hanging with a single movie, "Stargate Sg-1" picked up with the story of the titular crew as they traveled the universe via the Stargate portal, encountering new alien lifeforms and worlds along the way.

Unfortunately, when the series wrapped up, there was nothing to continue the story in the way that "Sg-1" had picked up where the film left off. "Stargate Sg-1" was canceled by the Sci-Fi channel (now SyFy) after 10 seasons back in 2007, and while there was the spin-off show "Stargate Atlantis," and two further spin-offs that arrived in the years that followed, the "Sg-1" story was very much finished.

Ever since, we've heard much about what could have been, including a canceled "Stargate" movie that would have brought the events of all the shows together.

Kurt Russell's 31-Year-Old Sci-Fi Franchise Starter Is Coming to Prime Video
Image
Stargate is heading to Prime Video. The 1994 sci-fi movie from Independence Day director Roland Emmerich will be added to the streaming platform at the start of June.

Beginning June 1, Prime Video subscribers will be able to stream Stargate. While perhaps best known today as a television franchise, Stargate began life on the big screen with the eponymous 1994 sci-fi action film starring Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil, who leads a team through the Stargate — an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole allowing for travel to a similar device elsewhere in the universe — to the planet of Abydos, where they find a society of ancient Egyptian-speaking humans ruled by a space-faring alien posing as the ancient Egyptian sun god Ra. James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, and Viveca Lindfors star alongside Russell in the movie.

Stargate was envisioned as the first entry in a trilogy of films that...

“It’s Going To Be a Crazy Year”: ‘The Ark’ Season 3 Gets “Incredible” Update From Showrunner
Image
Ensuring the survival of the human species is the sole purpose of the Ark One mission. Thankfully, we will continue to follow the progress of the team even as production updates have been released for The Ark's third season. The sci-fi adventure is currently chronicled in two seasons, with Season 2 wrapping its run in October 2024. A hit original series for Syfy, the network went on to renew the series for a third season. A couple of months following its renewal, the series co-showrunner, Dean Devlin, has confirmed the Season 3 filming start window for the dystopian drama.

Despite its renewal in March, the production schedule for the coming season remained vague in the weeks that followed. While speaking in an interview with ScreenRant, Devlin revealed that The Ark Season 3 filming window. While speaking about The Librarians: The Next Chapter, another series on which he serves as a showrunner and executive producer,...

One Stargate Sg-1 Actor Played 9 Different Characters
Image
After Roland Emmerich's 1994 "Stargate" movie debuted, there were actually plans for a "Stargate" trilogy of films. Instead, a continuation TV series followed, but Emmerich was nowhere in sight when "Sg-1" arrived in 1997. Neither were stars of the film, Kurt Russell and James Spader. Instead, "Sg-1" was overseen by showrunners Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner with "MacGyver "star Richard Dean Anderson replacing Russell in the role of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Michael Shanks replacing Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson.

In some ways, it might seem as though a TV series would be easier to make than a sequel to a successful Hollywood blockbuster. For one thing, TV was not yet in the so-called "golden age" that would arise in the years that followed its debut, and as such, audiences didn't always expect movie-level production values from their small-screen entertainment. On the other hand, a show about an elite squadron that...

Why Corin Nemec's Jonas Quinn Left Stargate Sg-1 So Quickly
Image
When "Stargate Sg-1" started back in 1997, it did so without the cast that fronted Roland Emmerich's original 1994 movie. "Stargate" starred Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil, a U.S. Air Force Special Operations officer who agrees to pass through the titular portal in order to explore the strange worlds that lay beyond. Russell was flanked by James Spader, who played Dr. Daniel Jackson, an archaeologist who joins O'Neill on his perilous mission.

Originally planned as a trilogy, "Stargate" did not spawn a cinematic franchise despite doing reasonably well at the box office. Instead, Showtime debuted the TV spinoff "Stargate Sg-1" in 1997. However, Russell declined to return as Jack O'Neill, and Spader did the same for his character, leaving showrunners Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner to find some new stars. They did so in the form of "MacGyver" actor Richard Dean Anderson, who played Colonel O'Neill on the series, and Michael Shanks,...

The One Part Of Stargate Sg-1 Michael Shanks Found Frustrating
Image
It is impossible to envision the "Stargate" franchise without Dr. Daniel Jackson, the brilliant archeologist who made intergalactic travel through Stargates possible. In Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," James Spader played Jackson as an explorer with tender curiosity, the kind of person brave enough to do the right thing in the face of evil. This endearing bravery is also an integral part of Jackson's character in "Stargate Sg-1" and parts of "Stargate Atlantis," brought to life by Michael Shanks. Although Shanks initially mimicked some of Spader's acting quirks to make his version of Jackson feel grounded, his incredibly ranged performance gradually helped etch the portrait of an increasingly complex protagonist. After all, Shanks' Jackson takes many forms in the "Stargate" shows, from doppelgangers in alternate realities to manipulated vessels for antagonistic beings. In each iteration, Shanks' dynamic performance shines bright.

Things, however, were not always rosy on the set of "Stargate Sg-1.

Why Stargate Sg-1 Didn't Include A Third Aschen Episode
Image
After Roland Emmerich said, "No, thanks" to a TV continuation of his modest box office hit "Stargate," Showtime set about doing it anyway. The network brought in Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner to create what became "Stargate Sg-1," and as it turned out, this was just the beginning of what quietly became one of the most sprawling sci-fi empires of the early 2000s.

"Sg-1" eventually moved to the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy) but the network cancelled the show after its tenth season. By that point, however, it had already spawned the spin-off series "Stargate Atlantis," which debuted in 2004, alongside a couple of direct-to-tv films. More spin-offs would come, too, with "Stargate Universe" debuting in 2009 and "Stargate Origins" arriving in 2018.

In all, then, the "Stargate" universe is impressively expansive. But just because the franchise kept growing doesn't mean things panned out exactly how Wright and Glassner had hoped. For one thing,...

The Two Things Stargate Sg-1's Co-Creator Would Change About The Sci-Fi Series
Image
When Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" made just short of $200 million on a $55 million budget, naturally there was talk of a sequel. In fact, Emmerich's modest 1994 sci-fi hit was supposed to kick off an entire "Stargate" film trilogy. But when the decision was made to move the franchise to the small screen, Emmerich turned down the offer to direct, citing episode budgets that weren't quite capacious enough for his ambitious vision.

Plans for a TV show went ahead anyway and in 1997, "Stargate Sg-1" debuted on Showtime. Co-created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, the series used the same premise as Emmerich's film and followed the eponymous crew's exploits as they explored alien worlds by passing through the Stargate portal. While the film had been a solid hit, the show went on to garner a cult following and spawned multiple spin-off series in the forms of "Stargate: Atlantis," "Stargate: Universe," "Stargate: Infinity,...

The Biggest Problem Stargate Sg-1 Faced, According To Its VFX Supervisor
Image
Though it was never a mega hit that commanded the kind of wide-ranging cultural influence of many other shows of its generation, "Stargate Sg-1" maintained a cult following throughout its run and remains impressive simply by virtue of what it represented. That is to say, the way in which creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner took Roland Emmerich's original 1994 "Stargate" movie and spun a full 10 seasons of intergalactic exploration action was a feat in and of itself.

Emmerich's film was enough of a box office success to prompt talk of an entire "Stargate" trilogy, but the story of the Sg-1 crew would ultimately unfold on the small screen, with Wright and Glassner shepherding the project using a whole new cast of actors that were playing the same characters from the movie. Ultimately, the Syfy channel cancelled Sg-1" in 2007, but by that point the show had run for a full...

The Cancelled Stargate Movie That Would Have Brought Every Show Together
Image
When Roland Emmerich made his 1994 sci-fi adventure "Stargate," he likely never envisioned the sprawling media saga that would follow. In fact, after the film proved a modest success at the box office, there was talk of making a whole "Stargate" trilogy. Instead, Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner took on the task of continuing the story begun by Emmerich. The pair oversaw "Stargate Sg-1," a TV show that launched in 1997 and revolved around the same team from the movie, following their exploits across the universe as they explore strange alien worlds using the Stargate portal. Kurt Russell might've refused to reprise his lead role as Colonel Jack O'Neill for the franchise's small-screen continuation, but Wright and Glassner had "MacGuyver" star Ricard Dean Anderson to help propel their series to success. Indeed, the show proved a cult hit, lasting for 10 seasons before the Sci-Fi channel (now SyFy) cancelled "Sg-1" in 2007.

But that...

A Classic Stargate Sg-1 Episode Was Supposed To Be A Theatrical Movie
Image
Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's "Stargate Sg-1" had a great run. The Syfy show ran for 10 seasons between 1997 and 2007 and chronciled the adventures of the titular S-1 special operations team, which used a Stargate device (an intergalactic portal of sorts) to travel to alien worlds. The show had no shortage of material to draw from in its earliest seasons either; it incorporated aspects of everything from Arthurian legend to Norse mythology, spinning fantastical yet grounded stories along the way.

However, by the time the sixth season rolled around, the "Sg-1" writers had begun worrying about the show's longevity. For starters, its episodic themes had started to feel stale. Moreover, the series' tight budget severely limited options for filming locations, which were mostly confined to the woods of British Columbia. Given the futuristic nature of the show, it became increasingly difficult for "Sg-1" to dress up places on Earth...

Roland Emmerich Turned Down Stargate Sg-1 For One Reason
Image
Those unfamiliar with the franchise will be shocked to learn the sheer volume of "Stargate" media there is in the universe. The "Stargate" saga began in 1994 with the release of Roland Emmerich's ultra-slick sci-fi movie, a gigantic hit that really thrust Emmerich into the American mass consciousness. The 1994 movie starred James Spader and Kurt Russell as a scientist and a soldier (respectively) who begin dabbling with an ancient Egyptian portal that, they find, grants them instant access to distant planets. They find that Ancient Egypt was once lousy with space aliens, and that creatures from beyond the stars have been influencing human history for millennia.

The film was only warmly reviewed, but it made almost $200 million on a $55 million budget, and it lodged itself into pop culture, seemingly in perpetuity. In 1997, the TV series "Stargate Sg-1" debuted on Showtime, gaining a passionate cult audience almost immediately. The series greatly expanded the film's lore,...

Christopher Judge Pitched A Stargate Sg-1 Spin-Off That Would Have Changed The Franchise
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Stargate Sg-1."

The best part of "Stargate Sg-1" — apart from its exciting premise about visiting alien worlds — is its central, titular crew. Among them, Teal'c of Chulak (Christopher Judge) is easily a fan favorite. The Jaffa revolutionary has a masterful way of making his presence felt, even when he's lurking in the background of some scenes. Moreover, Teal'c has undergone hell in his journey to defy Goa'uld and a lifetime of indoctrination, which he was able to leave behind to join the Stargate Command. And if you ask me, Teal'c is simply the coolest.

Judge, who portrayed Teal'c with such grace and understated magnetism, went on to reprise the role in the series sequel "Stargate Atlantis" (where he appeared in two episodes), along with the direct-to-dvd "Stargate" films "The Ark of Truth" and "Continuum." The actor, who is best known for playing Kratos in the...

The Real Reason Stargate Sg-1's Sam & Jack Didn't Get Together
Image
When Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner were tasked with creating a TV spin-off based on Roland Emmerich's 1994 "Stargate" movie, they turned to MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson, to play Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil — the role played by Kurt Russell in the film. "Stargate Sg-1" therefore benefitted from a casting boost before it even hit the airwaves in 1997. But it wasn't just MacGuyver that helped the show become the long-running cult hit it was.

Alongside Anderson's Jack O'Neill, Amanda Tapping's United States Air Force captain Dr. Samantha Carter helped flesh out the central cast. But rather than simply providing a romantic interest for the male lead, Carter was an integral member of the "Sg-1" team, every bit Jack's equal. That said, there was always the implication of some sort of romantic entanglement between the two, even if the writers never really followed through on it.

Throughout its 10 seasons and 214 episodes,...

Why The Stargate Movie's Co-Writer Was Upset By The TV Series
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"Stargate" was a surprisingly important sci-fi movie, all things considered. While the 1994 production from director Rolan Emmerich failed to get a sequel, it did serve as a launching pad for a surprisingly enduring franchise. MGM later decided to bring the concept to the small screen in 1997 with "Stargate Sg-1," a show that ran for 10 seasons and more than 200 episodes. While that undoubtedly resulted in a payday for the property's creators, Emmerich's "Stargate" movie co-writer, Dean Devlin, wasn't too pleased with the show.

In a 2019 retrospective with Variety, Devlin reflected on the "Stargate" film's legacy for its 25th anniversary. The piece revealed that MGM didn't want Emmerich or Devlin involved in the spinoff TV series, which was a source of tension. The studio "basically took it from us," Devlin said at the time. "They said we hadn't done TV and they...

The Ark Showrunners Explain How Seasons 1 & 2 Were Just A Prologue To The Sci-Fi Series' Actual Beginning
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Ark season 2 finale.

The second season of The Ark differs greatly from the first, diving deeper into science fiction concepts such as alien planets and alternate realities. Along with new dangers came several tragic deaths, which served as a reminder that none of the characters are safe from the dangers of space travel. The crew has finally landed on a habitable planet where they can co-exist alongside other Ark survivors. However, humans may not be the only species to call Trappist their home.

The final moments of The Ark season 2 sees Angus make a shocking discovery. While digging through the soil, he finds a slab with a mysterious message. The group is unable to translate the foreign language and its appearance hints at the possibility of higher life. Co-showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner tease that, although Trappist is an Earth-like planet, the potential third...

'Something Very Different': The Ark Showrunners Discuss Season 2's Epic Ending
Image
The Ark Season 2 finale was just as epic as the conclusion to Season 1, yet the SyFy show felt markedly different the second time around. The second season saw Lt. Sharon Garnet and her crew encounter new potential allies, new villains and a possible new home -- but they also had a lot fall apart along the way.

Showrunners and executive producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner spoke to Cbr about the totality of making Season 2, including if they felt pressure to top what they did in Season 1. They also discussed which characters made the biggest leaps and what the thought process was behind Season 2's major character deaths. Plus, they reflect on the numerous crew members who make The Ark's fantastic world come to life.

Cbr: The Ark Season 1 ended on a massive note, with Ark One and Ark 15 having to join forces unexpectedly. What was on your minds for the Season 2 finale?...

Criminal Minds Star Matthew Gray Gubler to Headline CBS Procedural Einstein
Image
Matthew Gray Gubler is returning to TV!

While that means he won’t be returning to Criminal Minds, I daresay this might be better.

After entertaining us for so long as part of an ensemble, he’ll now headline an upcoming CBS procedural that is currently titled Einstein. That title is subject to change, but the name recognition might work to its benefit.

(Valerie MacOn/Afp via Getty Images)

According to Deadline, Gubler will star in and produce the new show.

The good news with Einstein is plentiful. It hails from Monk creator and executive producer Andy Breckman and director and executive producer Randy Zisk.

This is excellent news for Criminal Minds fans who miss fan favorite Gubler on the small screen.

The Ark Season 2 Episode 12: Fortunate
Image
Whoever said you needed aliens and ray guns to have a thriving space odyssey series? Not The Ark! This show doesn’t need the CGI gimmicks to deliver incredible storytelling with characters who feel like friends.

This was the epitome of a finale. From start to finish, I was on the edge of my seat, fully enthralled. Hats off to Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner. This was a roller coaster of an ending.

The Ark took a lot of chances with the story this season, and despite a few pitfalls, only the episodes and choices that left a lasting impression are remembered.

(Aleksandar Letic/Ark TV Holdings, Inc./Syfy)

This finale perfectly balanced between leaving things open for the future and a soft close in case The Ark doesn’t receive a renewal.

After that finale, though, Syfy would be crazy not to get on board for another season!

Exclusive: The Ark’s Showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner Tease Fans With Season 2 Gossip and an Epic Finale
Image
The boys are back in space! The wonderful showrunners of The Ark were gracious enough to stop by TV Fanatic for another chat. With an interview before the pilot and another before the finale, we have come full circle!

The series has made incredible strides in diversifying its episodes, and it has paid off. Despite a hiccup or two, the show has maintained its course through character development.

Honestly, the characters are why we signed up for The Ark, right? It’s all about human interaction and how the crew of The Ark One handles finding a home planet amidst all the chaos.

(Aleksandar Letic/Ark TV Holdings, Inc./Syfy)

Not to be a messy viewer, but I think we can all agree that if this story were happening in reality, there would be far more rounds of musical beds.

Thankfully, The Ark is in good hands with Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner!

Colin Farrell is a very busy man. He’s currently playing Oz Cobb on the HBO series The Penguin, but he’s got enough energy and talent to star in two shows.

In the Apple TV+ series, Farrell plays John Sugar, a private detective who is incredibly compassionate toward his clients and everyone else.

He has an aversion to violence and will literally beg people not to force him to use force. Of course, by asking,...

Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 5 Review: Grave Danger
Image
Oh. My. God. Has your pulse slowed down yet? Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 5 just hit us with the most nerve-wracking, heart-pounding hour of the entire season — maybe even the entire series.

If you weren’t on the edge of your seat, screaming at the screen, you weren’t paying attention.

Holy hell. Holy hell. Holy hell.

Whelan’s dirty little secret. Harkness and his ruthless mindgames. Flyte versus the Terminator. Lamb versus David. And Ho versus a bot?

(Apple TV+)

Yeah, there was a bit of humor packed into this relentless hour, but make no mistake — this was Slow Horses at its most intense. And yes, once again, River found himself in trouble!

Let’s catch our breath and break down the madness.

No One Will Miss You, Molly

Within minutes of “Grave Danger,” the tone was set, and it escalated the moment Molly opened the door to reveal Frank Harkness.

Tell Me Lies Season 2 Episode 6 Review: Do Your Dirty Words Come Out to Play?
Image
They were the slaps heard around the world on Tell Me Lies Season 2 Episode 6! Do people actually play slap-shot? That seems like a surefire way to end some friendships!

Granted, most of these characters are already on shaky ground with each other. It seems like the writers wanted to find the most volatile way to ruin Thanksgiving.

Tell Me Lies is not pulling any punches, and neither is Lucy! This episode was supercharged with high-flying hormones and emotions to the max! It’s no wonder some of these characters are not doing great academically.

(Josh Stringer/Disney)

That said, the series excels at sucking viewers right into the squabbles and underhanded attempts to ruin lives and reputations. It’s a wonder that any of them showed up at Bree’s wedding in 2015.

Showtime Pushed For Nudity In Stargate Sg-1, But One Star Fought Back
Image
Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" was a moderate box office success when it hit theaters back in 1994, making almost $200 million on a $55 million budget. The movie was undeniably helped by the presence of Kurt Russell, who played Colonel Jack O'Neill, a U.S. Air Force Special Operations officer who's tasked with leading a team through the titular portal into unknown corners of the universe. Another thing working in the film's favor was its PG-13 rating, which enabled a larger audience to watch Emmerich's sci-fi stylings than if it had been hit with a full R-rating.

While there was talk of a sequel, and indeed an entire trilogy at the time, it seems "Stargate" wasn't quite a big enough hit to warrant such things. Instead, the film received a spin-off TV series starring MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson, in place of Russell, who refused to return as O'Neill. Thus, series co-creators Brad Wright...

Unproduced Dialogue From Stargate Sg-1 Hints At Sam And Jack's Romantic Status
Image
When "Stargate" debuted in 1994, it was a modest hit. Roland Emmerich's film made $196 million on a $55 million budget, turning a decent enough profit and establishing what would become a surprisingly long-running franchise. That franchise would not play out on the big screen, however. Instead "Stargate" spawned a slew of TV shows, which focused on Stargate command sending out various crews to explore forgotten and mysterious corners of the universe using the titular portals.

The first, best-known, and longest-running of these series was "Stargate Sg-1," which tapped MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson, to play Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil — the role played by Kurt Russell in Emmerich's movie. Show creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner also brought in Amanda Tapping to play the United States Air Force captain Samantha Carter — a member of O'Neil's crew tasked with exploring the universe and fending off assorted alien threats.

The Sci-fi channel, now "SyFy,...

Richard Dean Anderson Had Two Conditions To Replace Kurt Russell For Stargate Sg-1
Image
In Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil (played by a brilliant Kurt Russell) is as blunt as it gets. When linguist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is invited to assist with the Stargate mission, O'Neil is frank about his disdain for an outsider involved in such a top-secret mission and exhibits little empathy when Jackson is forced to deal with an ancient civilization alone. However, when things go south, O'Neil is the first to dive into the jaws of danger, guns blazing, taking the initiative to save Jackson from the clutches of the malicious alien, Ra (Jaye Davidson). "Give my regards to King Tut, a**hole!," he yells before crushing an elevator on top of Ra's men to buy enough time for Jackson to get Sha'uri (Mili Avital) to safety.

Although "Stargate" does not offer anything novel in terms of premise, it is a fun sci-fi adventure that...

Why The Sci-Fi Channel Canceled Stargate Sg-1 After Season 10
Image
When a beloved, long-running sci-fi series is abruptly canceled, like Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's "Stargate Sg-1," it is natural for the fanbase to feel festering discontent. Premiering on Showtime in 1997, "Stargate Sg-1" aired its series finale in 2007, just a few days after its milestone episode — titled "200" — was released, which celebrated the show's tendency to swerve towards incredibly eccentric ideas that somehow always found a way to stick the landing. Of course, Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi adventure film "Stargate" had sown the seeds for the franchise (despite plans for two more films falling through), granting fans the unique opportunity to unravel the mysteries surrounding the titular artifact through a spin-off series that ran for almost 10 years.

So, what was "Stargate Sg-1" about? The series picks up roughly a year after the events in Emmerich's movie, by which point the titular artifact has become common knowledge among the masses and...

Stargate's Sci-Fi Settings Noticeably Declined Due To Real World Expansions
Image
This post contains spoilers for the "Stargate" franchise.

Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi drama "Stargate" posits an intriguing premise. An ancient ring-shaped device excavated during an archaeological expedition in Giza turns out to be a two-way portal connecting similar devices on distant plants, using a wormhole as a means to transport people. The film's elaborate plot gradually reveals that extraterrestrial beings enslaved parts of the human civilization, and used the Stargate device to trap them in their home planets across the galaxy. Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's beloved series "Stargate Sg-1" builds its foundation on the film's lore, expanding a dystopian world where military organizations on Earth use the Stargate to free the enslaved humans and protect the planet from a vicious alien race known as the Goa'uld.

"Sg-1" ran for 10 seasons over a span of 10 years, and birthed a sprawling franchise dedicated to enriching its mythos, so much so...
