Jake Gyllenhaal will be honored at Manhattan Theatre Club’s spring gala.

Gyllenhaal is currently performing on Broadway as Iago in Othello, opposite Denzel Washington. He made his Broadway debut in Mtc’s 2015 production of Nick Payne’s Constellations, opposite Ruth Wilson, and has appeared on Broadway in the 2017 revival of Sunday in the Park With George and in the 2019 production of Sea Wall/A Life.

The actor also served on Mtc’s Board of Directors from 2015 to 2023 and has been a supporter of the nonprofit theater’s student outreach programs.

The gala is scheduled to take place May 19 at Cipriani in Manhattan. Bernadette Peters, who is currently starring in Old Friends, playing at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, will host. The evening will also honor Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.

Kathryn Hahn gave her “Agatha All Along” co-star Patti LuPone a shoutout this week on “Hot Ones Versus,” taking a big bite of a wing before throwing it across the studio: “That was for Lupone!”

For those catching up, Hahn was referencing LuPone’s own appearance on “Hot One Versus” with their “Agatha All Along” co-star Aubrey Plaza back in September. After dishing on everyone from Joanna Gleason to Andrew Lloyd Webber while eating increasingly spicier chicken wings, the three-time Tony winner was then asked to look into the camera and apologize to Madonna for calling her a “movie killer” — or to eat another wing.

Without missing a beat, LuPone picked up a wing, stared down the camera, and ate it up. Plaza professed her love and called her “mommy” while LuPone took the remainder of her wing and threw it at the camera off set.

Season 5 was when it all came together for "Seinfeld." It was no longer a cult sitcom that couldn't crack the Nielsen ratings' top 20, but an appointment-viewing smash that finished third for the year overall. The following year, it would become the number one show on the air.

Award-winning actor Aaron Lazar, known for his two decades of captivating audiences on Broadway and beyond, is set to release a powerful new album, Impossible Dream, featuring some of the brightest stars in theater, television, and music on August 16.

This exciting announcement comes as Lazar bravely faces amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), a progressive neurodegenerative disease he was diagnosed with in January 2022.

Bette Midler is not holding back her thoughts on calling out her blunders from the past, and one of those is the 2000 sitcom Bette.

Midler recently recalled her stint as a sitcom star and called that experience a “mistake.” She also regretted not suing Lindsay Lohan after she dropped out of the show following the pilot.

“I did a television show, Bette. Does it get any more generic than that? A big, big, big mistake,” Midler said on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast. “I think for several reasons. It was the wrong motivation. It was a part of the media I simply did not understand. I watched it. I appreciated it. I enjoyed it, But I didn’t know what it meant to make it.”

She continued, “I had made theatrical live events. I had made films. I had made variety television shows. I had been on talk shows.

Jonathan Del Arco greets us with a full-on bear hug and a hearty chuckle. The two of us have come together at a Burbank coffee shop one sunny afternoon to chat about his latest big-screen outing, the bittersweet drama The Grotto.

For Del Arco, The Grotto continues to build momentum on an already successful career. Having spent three decades in Hollywood, the handsome, Uruguay-born thespian first gained notice with guest spots on Star Trek: The Next Generation as the rogue Borg Hugh, and with a recurring role on Nip/Tuck. He spent 11 years playing the role of medical examiner Dr. Fernando Morales on The Closer and its subsequent spinoff Major Crimes before returning to his role of Hugh in season one of Star Trek: Picard. This year’s Tony race for Best Musical Revival has two Stephen Sondheim shows (“Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd”) in contention. Will one of them win or will they cancel each other out? Let’s go over both of them.

“Into the Woods” combines several fairy tales and explores the consequences of the characters’ quests. The main storyline focuses on a childless baker and his wife as they go into the woods to break a spell set upon them by a witch. There they run into various classic fairy tale characters, all before revealing what happens after “happily ever after.”

The original production won three Tonys in 1988 for Best Actress (Musical) for Joanna Gleason, Best Musical Book for James Lapine, and Best Original Score for Sondheim. Exclusive: Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad), Jonathan Del Arco (Major Crimes), Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal), Steve Kazee (Shameless) and Susan Sullivan (The Kominsky Method) have signed on to star in The Grotto, the first feature written and directed by Tony Award-winning actress Joanna Gleason (Into the Woods).

The film centers on Alice (Brandt), who uncovers her recently deceased fiancé’s secret past when she inherits part ownership of a forgotten nightclub in the Mojave Desert.

Del Arco will play Victor, the owner of the nightclub, with Bucatinsky portraying Alice’s new best friend, Kip. The roles played by Kazee and Sullivan have not yet been disclosed.

Actors set to appear in supporting roles include Miguel Sandoval (Station 19), Caroline Aaron (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Michael Nouri (Damages), Amy Aquino (Bosch), Lindsay Mendez (Broadway’s Carousel) and Kevin Chamberlin (Broadway’s Seussical).

Exclusive: Tony Award-winning actress Joanna Gleason will make her feature film writing and directing debut with The Grotto, set to begin production later this month.

The project was announced by Gleason’s 18 High Street Films, Ouroboros Entertainment and T42 Entertainment, the three partners on the production. Casting will be announced in early this month.

Gleason said in a statement, “As the reality of the pandemic dawned, I found myself in a state of high anxiety and a shared world grief. How to feel like life could move forward? Writing/directing this film was the answer for me. I wanted to continue to push myself creatively, tell a story on screen and join other women who have discovered their ‘second acts.”

I'm talking London cast, movie version, Broadway revival and ouch, the one that's gonna leave a gaping hole in my heart, that beautiful Original Broadway Cast Recording starring Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, Tom Aldredge, Robert Westenberg and above them all as the Witch receiving the deal-breaking top billing the producers previously refused Patti LuPone when they offered her the role Bernadette Peters.

Part dark tragedy, part dark comedy, or is it all comedy? It’s certainly all dark to say the least. Considered by almost everybody as one of Woody Allen’s very best films (although I’m not sure Woody would agree), ‘Crimes and Misdemeanors’, wasn’t his first dramatic film, that was the Ingmar Bergman-esque ‘Interiors,’ and it certainly wasn’t his last comedy, yet it clearly represents the moment in Allen’s career when he started to abandon comedy in favor of drama and tragedy. Well, maybe “abandon,” is the wrong word, but he certainly began to lose interest in comedy around here.

Rest in peace, Monty Hall. 

The host and co-creator of Let's Make a Deal died at his home in Beverly Hills, California, on Saturday, his daughter, Joanna Gleason, confirms to The New York Times. Hall died of heart failure. He was 96. 

The TV host made his debut with Let's Make a Deal in 1963, turning audience members into the zany, costumed characters audiences know and love. Hall remained involved in the game show throughout the years, as owner of the show and occasional guest, after Wayne Brady took over as host in 2009.

Contracted, originally screened at Frightfest back in 2013, stars Najarra Townsend as Samantha, a young woman who contracts something nasty after being date-raped at a party. Over the course of a few short days, she begins bleeding from pretty much every orifice and quite literally falling to bits. Her already fragile relationships with her friends, colleagues and mother (Caroline Williams) also start to break down as she refuses to seek help and becomes increasingly isolated.

The body horror elements within the film were really well done – that is to say, very icky. Cronenberg fans will be well satisfied with the deterioration of the flesh on display here. The film’s portrayal of an insular and personal crisis is well done. Samantha is on a self-destructive path in addition to the horrifying illness she finds herself with.

Music Theatre International (Mti) is typically the place one goes in order to license a particular show to perform regionally, communally, etc. Among the shows they handle is Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods, which is gearing up for its release next week (and I will be seeing tomorrow). In preparing for my viewing, I have, of course, been doing a little refresher of the original show, such as watching the new Blu-ray of the original production starring Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, and Chip Zien over and over and over again. I also have been re-reading Sondheim's notes on the show's lyrics in his book Look, I Made a Hat, which is volume two of his collected, annotated lyrics. We’re at the edge of our seats waiting for a peek into the fabulous tunes “Into the Woods” has to offer and today (December 4), we finally heard a sample from Anna Kendrick singing “On the Steps of the Palace” as Cinderella.
