Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 brings more monsters into the story
Legendary (2013)
The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November 2023 into January 2024 (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. A few months after the season finale, it was confirmed that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 was a sure thing, then filming began in November of 2024. The first season’s star Wyatt Russell is back for season 2, and while speaking to Collider, Russell teased that there are “more monsters” in the new episodes.

Patrick Wilson & Jessica Biel's 9-Year-Old Murder Mystery Movie Moves to Max
Image
The Conjuring and Aquaman star Patrick Wilson's psychological thriller, A kind of Murder, will soon hit Max. The underrated murder mystery movie, which stars The Sinner and Blade: Trinity's Jessica Biel opposite Wilson, debuted in 2016 to less-than-stellar reviews from critics.

Audiences will have another chance to re-experience and re-evaluate A Kind of Murder when it arrives on Max on April 1. Directed by Andy Goddard from a screenplay by Susan Boyd, the film adapts Patricia Highsmith's 1954 novel The Blunderer. Wilson plays Walter Stackhouse, an architect and aspiring writer of short-story crime fiction, fascinated by the recent murder of the spouse of local bookstore owner Marty Kimmel. Biel portrays Walter's wife Clara Stackhouse, who apparently commits suicide not far from the restaurant parking lot where Kimmel's wife was murdered. A police investigation led by Detective Lawrence Corby ensues, as both husbands are suspected of being involved in the deaths of both women.

10 Spinoffs Ways Darker Than The Movies & TV Shows They Were Based On
Image
The 21st century has been an era of sequels, reboots, and spinoffs. While these projects have saturated the market for many years, some are worth checking out. One of the reasons that a spinoff could find unexpected success without imitating the original movie or TV show is by incorporating darker and more intense storylines. Since a spinoff doesn't have the pressure and expectations that the original film or series might face, it can experiment with style and tone to exciting results. A good spinoff will root itself within the story's universe while working to stand alone as an individual project.

When many of the best legacy movie sequels differentiate themselves by going down a darker path, this could mean that more mature and adult themes will play a large part in the project. This makes sense, as when a TV show takes on a more serious tone, more emotional strife...

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters releases trailer for the back half of the season
Image
Godzilla fans are eating really well right now. Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise continues to grow as big as their stars, as the first entry started with 2014’s Godzilla, then continued with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, then 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and finally bringing the gargantuas face-to-face in 2020’s Godzilla vs Kong. Apple TV+ has also recently premiered Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which chronicles the secret agency that investigates and polices the activity of these ancient beasts. Add to that the recent release of the critically and audience-acclaimed Japanese film, Godzilla Minus One, currently in theaters. And this past weekend, Warner Bros. released the trailer for a new Monsterverse film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

While Monarch has already premiered with the father-son star power of Kurt and Wyatt Russell, Apple has now unveiled a trailer for the second half of the season. The official synopsis for the series reads,...

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters VFX Supervisor Brings the Monster Mash to Epic Life
Image
Ever since the MonsterVerse began with 2014's Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards, visual effects expert Sean Konrad has had a steady hand in shaping the popular Godzilla shared universe. Continuing in his role as visual effects supervisor for 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Konrad is a prominent part of the production on the MonsterVerse Apple TV+ original series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The epic story spans 65 years, from the origins of Monarch in the '50s to the immediate aftermath of Godzilla's battle against the MUTOs in San Francisco in 2014's Godzilla.

In an exclusive interview with Cbr, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters visual effects supervisor Sean Konrad explains how the sweeping MonsterVerse saga came to life, shares the process of how new Titans were designed and introduced in the series, and reveals how the show subtly alters its presentation to reflect the sheer passage of timeline covered in Legacy of Monsters.

How the Godzilla TV Show Monarch Convinced Kurt Russell and His Son Wyatt to Work Together Again
Image
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may owe its greatest debt not to Toho, nor even the previous entries in the Monster-Verse, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. No, the most important movie for the new show from Apple TV+ is Soldier. Yes, Soldier, the 1998 sci-flick directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

Because in Soldier, Kurt Russell played the same character as his son Wyatt, as the latter portrays the 11-year-old version of the lifelong warrior Todd 3465. The duo repeat that feat in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters by playing Lee Shaw at two points in the man’s life. The elder Russell plays Shaw in the present, as part of the research group Monarch, dealing with the revelation of monsters in 2014’s Godzilla. The younger Russell plays Shaw in the 1950s, connecting the series to the golden age of Kaiju cinema.

Series developer Matt Fraction, best known for...

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Trailer Promises a Godzilla Story Like Never Before
Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Ren Watabe, Anders Holm, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, and Mari Yamamoto in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
Movie franchises moving to the small screen tend to come with significant caveats, thanks to lower budgets.

Fortunately, no expense was spared in producing the Apple TV+ drama series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, a new series based on Legendary's Monserverse.

The official trailer for the highly-anticipated project dropped during a New York Comic-Con panel for the series, and let's just say we're convinced.

The impressive cast includes Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski.

That's a perfect cast who bring their A-game in the trailer, showcasing a very different world after the battle between Godzilla and the Titans.

With San Francisco pretty much obliterated in that battle, there's a desire for answers about why monsters have become so prominent.

The official logline reads:

"Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and...

Bo Report: ‘Mortal Kombat’ easily defeats the competition
Image
Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat proved the main attraction at the box office last weekend, driving almost half of all trade, and ranking as one of the highest R-rated openers of all time.

Shot in South Australia, directed by Australian director Simon McQuoid and produced by fellow Aussie James Wan, Mortal Kombat opened on $3.6 million from 406 screens – a whopping average of $8,922.

With previews, the New Line Cinema actioner, inspired by the video game franchise of the same name, is on $4.09 million.

That’s behind the opening of other R-rated titles The Wolf of Wall Street ($5.13 million) and Hannibal ($4.25 million), but ahead of Eyes Wide Shut (opened on $2.55 million), The Hateful Eight ($2.42m) and Kill Bill Vol.1 ($2.26 million).

However, Hannibal technically opened as a MA15+ film, and was moved to R after week one – so Mortal Kombat can effectively claim second place.

Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks,...

Eddie Izzard And Judi Dench’s ‘Six Minutes To Midnight’ Premieres; ‘Bad Trip’ And ‘Tina’ Make Streaming Debut – Specialty Preview
Image
More films with Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench is something that the world needs. They starred together in Stephen Frears’ Victoria & Abdul in 2017 and now they reunite in the Andy Goddard-directed Six Minutes To Midnight which will be released by IFC Films in theaters and on demand starting today.

Written by Izzard, Goddard and Celyn Jones, Six Minutes To Midnight is based on true events from 1939. The film follows teacher Thomas Miller (Izzard) who has taken a last-minute and controversial role teaching English to the daughters of high-ranking Nazis at the Augusta-Victoria College, Bexhill-on-Sea – a finishing school on the south coast of England.

Under the watchful eye of their headmistress Miss Rocholl (Dench), and her devout assistant Ilse Keller (Carla Juri), the girls practice their English and learn how to represent the ideal of German womanhood.

When the body of a former teacher is discovered, it triggers a...

‘Six Minutes to Midnight’ Review: A Modestly Diverting, Second-Tier Period Spy Thriller
Image
Inspired by the real history of Bexhill-on-Sea’s Victoria-Augusta-College, a 1930s finishing school for the daughters of the Nazi elite, “Six Minutes to Midnight,” helmed by Andy Goddard, wants to be a Hitchcockian thriller, but merely manages a familiar pastiche peopled with stock characters that should divert less-discriminating viewers. The clunky plot, set circa August 1939, centers on an undercover British agent who infiltrates the school disguised as a new teacher. With the U.K. and Germany on the brink of war, his assignment is to discover if Deutschland plans on repatriating their young flowers of maidenhood and whether said Mädchen might serve as captive pawns in Britain’s diplomatic chess game.

After his predecessor mysteriously disappears, Thomas Miller becomes the school’s English master. He’s disdainfully welcomed by the school’s headmistress Miss Rocholl (a subdued Judi Dench) as a “journeyman” teacher. In a telling indicator of the lower-budget nature of this project,...

Judi Dench, James D'Arcy, and Eddie Izzard in Six Minutes to Midnight (2020)
Closing a circle by Anne-Katrin Titze
Judi Dench, James D'Arcy, and Eddie Izzard in Six Minutes to Midnight (2020)
Six Minutes To Midnight director Andy Goddard with Anne-Katrin Titze on Eddie Izzard and Bexhill-on-Sea: “Eddie used to go there as a child. I think it was a nice close to the circle to film there.”

Earlier in our conversation, Andy Goddard mentioned John Boulting’s Brighton Rock (starring Richard Attenborough), Alberto Cavalcanti’s Went The Day Well?, and Robert Donat’s performance in Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps as references for his historical thriller Six Minutes To Midnight (co-written with Eddie Izzard and Celyn Jones). He also pointed out the innocence reflected in Lionel Jeffries’ The Railway Children and Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society. Here the director notes the impact of the countryside of England, with its sunshine and long shadows, shot by Chris Seager, and the production design by Candida Otton.

Six Minutes To Midnight – Review
Image
Judi Dench as Miss Rocholl in Andy Goddard’s “Six Minutes to Midnight.”

Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.

A Nazi-run boarding school for girls on the British coast? Sound preposterous but in fact there really was such a school, which is the inspiration for the period spy thriller Six Minutes To Midnight.

Judi Dench, Eddie Izzard, and Jim Broadbent headline the film, a Hitchcock-like British historical thriller set in the summer of 1939, just as WWII loomed. The Augusta-Victoria College is a finishing school for German girls at Bexhill-on-Sea on the southeast coast of England.

The film has been a pet project for many year for Eddie Izzard, who grew up in the area., and not only stars in the film but co-wrote the script along with co-star Celyn Jones and director Andy Goddard. The idea sparked when Izzard visited a Bexhill museum and saw the school’s insignia patch,...

Six Minutes To Midnight - Anne-Katrin Titze - 16692
Robert Donat
With a nod to Robert Donat’s Richard Hannay in Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps and an unintended wink to a bus trip in Torn Curtain with Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, Andy Goddard’s Six Minutes To Midnight (co-written with Eddie Izzard and Celyn Jones) conjures up moments from cinema history. Leontine Sagan’s Mädchen in Uniform from 1931 may come to mind and when the German girls at the Augusta-Victoria College are singing in the staircase, The Sound Of Music is in the air.

The tautly wound historical thriller stars Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench with Carla Juri (of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 and Frauke Finsterwalder’s Finsterworld), Jim Broadbent, Celyn Jones, Maria Dragus (of Michael Haneke’s White Ribbon and Cristian Mungiu’s Graduation), James D’Arcy, David Schofield, and Tijan Marei. Six Minutes to Midnight Review
Image
“England can be an unforgiving place if you happen to be German”

England, 1939.

17 days before the start of World War 2, English teacher Wheatley (Nigel Lindsay) goes missing from The Augusta-Victoria College for Girls in Bexley-on-Sea, the boarding school famous for housing the daughters and goddaughters of Nazi High Command. 6 days later Thomas Miller (Eddie Izzard) secures a job replacing Wheatley and from then on, tries to secretly find out what exactly happened. Inspired by true events, Six Minutes to Midnight is a period thriller written by Eddie Izzard, director Andy Goddard and co-writer Celyn Jones.

The film starts off strong, with fast-paced, intense scenes from Lindsey and Izzard. It’s accompanied by German composer Marc Streitenfeld’s beautiful score which is a delight to listen to throughout the film. This makes for a great start to the film, with an intriguing mystery to look forward to…or so you would hope.

Andy Goddard on Eddie Izzard’s Thomas Miller, who “is like Robert Donat, being a wrong man being chased.”

Shot crisply by Chris Seager with impeccable costumes by Lucinda Wright, Andy Goddard’s second feature film (co-written with Izzard and Jones) is set ominously at a finishing school in an English seaside town during the summer of 1939, where high-ranking German officials had sent their daughters to learn English.
