Tom Hanks' acclaimed historical drama series John Adams is becoming a hit all over again thanks to a streaming resurgence. Paul Giamatti played the title character — one of America's founding fathers and second president — in the 2008 HBO series.
Per FlixPatrol, John Adams has rocketed back into Max's top 10 streaming shows as of Sunday, July 6. While the sudden streaming surge may have been sparked by the July 4 holiday weekend, it's still an impressive feat considering John Adams is 17 years old.
Hanks executive produced John Adams along with his long-time Playtone partner Gary Goetzman. The pair enlisted screenwriter Kirk Ellis (Anne Frank: The Whole Story) to adapt author David McCullough's 2001 biography John Adams, which won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography.

The 2025 Tribeca Festival kicked off with the world premiere of the HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So it Goes, but its subject was unable to attend the celebration.
Joel announced last week that he had been diagnosed with brain disorder normal pressure hydrocephalus (Nph), leading him to cancel his upcoming concerts and prompting concern from fans.
In keeping with that focus on recovery, Joel wasn’t on hand for the Tribeca Festival opening night celebration, but the directors and producers of the two-part film, echoing comments made yesterday from Joel friend Howard Stern, indicated there’s no reason to be too concerned about the “Piano Man” performer.
“He’s going to be fine,” co-director Susan Lacy told The Hollywood Reporter before Wednesday night’s screening. “He just needs to recover. He needs to do the physical therapy, which he’s doing — the doctors were telling him yesterday he’ll be fine.

An ailing Billy Joel was not in attendance tonight at the world premiere HBO documentary about his life and music but sent word to a packed Beacon Theater in NYC via its director.
“Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey his greetings to you all. He said ‘getting old sucks, but it’s still preferable to getting cremated’,” relayed Susan Lacy, who helmed and produced the doc Billy Joel: And So It Goes with Jessica Levin. Part 1 of 2 opened the Tribeca Festival Wednesday.
“Billy may be considered the poet laureate of New York. You feel the essence of our city in his lyrics,” said Tribeca Enterprises’ Robert De Niro introducing the festival and the film with co-founder Jane Rosenthal.
Joel’s scrappiness and immense talent are both vivid in the film about the Long Island bard who formed his first cover band, The Lonely Souls,...

“The emotion, Psychology, and the visual beauty of this moment are working in harmony, in a way that is just a pure cinematic moment.” Considering Paul Thomas Anderson steals so blatantly from the movies that came before him, It’s fitting to quote directly from Jordan Peele, an Oscar-winning filmmaker on the rise who showed his reverence for Anderson during a 2018 group discussion with the nominated directors that year.
P.T.A.’s “Phantom Thread” (the son of Hitchcock’s “Rebecca”) looks like a serious, awards-bait film about dressmaking in 1950s London, but it unfolds slowly to reveal a Freudian rom-com within its fabric. Memorably, Reynolds Woodcock betrays himself in the name of love. From 2019-20, the strangeness of the film lingered, like a seed sprouting in my brain.
My endless curiosity would extend to the pre-production of “Licorice Pizza,” by all accounts a breezy, joyous teenage rom-com…Until I...

Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, Apple TV+’s war drama miniseries Masters of the Air, starring Austin Butler, Callum Turner, and Anthony Boyle, received positive to mixed reviews from critics and audiences upon release. Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, the story follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group during WWII.
Critics at the time shared that Masters of the Air is ‘an absolutely fantastic television’ that goes on to depict the experience of pilots during World War II. Even though it received a positive to mixed response, audiences were concerned about the accuracy of the story and noted that the story had omitted a lot of parts from the actual story of the 100th. However, it’s Austin Butler’s experience that can change anyone’s mind about whether to re-watch the show or not.

Tom Hanks and the roles of soldiers go hand in hand, be it Captain Miller taking his boys on a mission or Forrest Gump going to war in Vietnam and winning the Medal of Honor, every time he plays a soldier, he absolutely kills it. In 2020, he got in front of the camera to don the uniform again, and this time as U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause.
The 2020 movie was about Krause’s first mission, which turns into everyone’s last hope. Based on true events, Krause is assigned to be the commanding officer of an allied convoy that he is leading across the Atlantic during World War II, and they come under extreme threat from German U-boats. The movie was filled with intense sea battles filled with terror and missiles; after the huge success of the movie, it looks like Tom Hanks and Apple TV+ are gearing up for interesting new updates.

Apple TV+ is no stranger to developing successful spy and detective stories for the audience. Following the success of Slow Horses, based on the Mick Herron novels, it will soon be adding a thriller to its roster as Peter Straughan gears up to adapt late author Philip Kerr’s popular Berlin Noir books.
It was revealed in 2012 that HBO and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman were in early talks to acquire the rights to the novel. And now it seems like Playtone did acquire the rights, and their deal with Apple TV+ is now finally paying off. Apple TV+ and Playtone are also working on a TV adaptation of Elliot Ackerman’s Sheepdogs, but let’s find out more about Philip Kerr’s book.

Exclusive: Bernie Gunther is heading to the small screen.
Apple TV+ has greenlit a long-gestating TV adaptation of the late Philip Kerr’s popular Berlin Noir books from Oscar-winning Conclave writer Peter Straughan, Doctor Who producer Bad Wolf, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone.
The untitled drama is based on Kerr’s final book Metropolis, which told the iconic detective’s origin story. Set in 1928, Metropolis follows newly promoted police officer Gunther in the intimidating elite Berlin Murder Squad, investigating what seems to be a serial killer targeting victims on the fringes of society. Gunther’s Berlin is described as a “city of unprecedented freedom and dizzying turbulence, the Nazis a distant nightmare waiting in the wings.”

If it felt like television was completing one era and starting another as 2024 dawned, it’s because it really was. Such critical smashes as Succession, Ted Lasso, The Crown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, and Reservation Dogs took their final bows in 2023, wrapping up the same year as twin strikes of the WGA and SAG. It consequently felt like the TV world was welcoming a group of fresh faces (along with a few acclaimed returnees) this year.

Once December hits, it's time to break out the Christmas movies, most of which are thoroughly entertaining, despite the fact that they have the same frustrating plot hole. Production studios have released a wide variety of festive flicks over the years. From classics like It's a Wonderful Life to modern films like The Christmas Chronicles, there are so many entertaining and heartwarming holiday movies to watch at the end of each year. However, some contain an inconsistency that has been repeated time and time again, resulting in frustration during what's supposed to be a joyful and celebratory time.
In early 2024, Gary Goetzman, producer of The Polar Express, told Comicbook.com that a sequel is in the works at Warner Bros. However, the studio has yet to make any official announcements regarding the movie.

Among the most revered moviemakers of his generation, Paul Thomas Anderson is in post-production on his latest film, tentatively titled The Hombres of Baktan Cross. As fans eagerly await more details about the mysterious Leonardo DiCaprio project, they must watch Licorice Pizza for free on Tubi. It is one of PTA's most personal, freewheeling, and fun-filled movies, exploring his upbringing in the 1970s San Fernando Valley. It's also one of his highest-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes.
Set in Southern California in 1973, Licorice Pizza is a romantic coming-of-age dramedy with a playfully loose narrative and editing style that feels like a fun, throwback hangout movie. Apart from establishing a vivid time and place, the autobiographical flourishes that PTA adds to the story offer fans a glimpse of his childhood by transporting them to a groovy decade full of bell-bottom jeans, vinyl records, large Afro hairdos, and more.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are set to executive produce a new Javier Bardem-led thriller series for Apple TV+ based on “Cape Fear,” a film with ties to both Scorsese and Spielberg.
Apple TV+ has granted a series order for “Cape Fear,” which will be written and showrun by Nick Antosca. Antosca will executive produce alongside Scorsese, Spielberg and Bardem.
The series is based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel “The Executioners,” which inspired Gregory Peck’s 1962 film adaptation, “Cape Fear.” In the late 1980s, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct a new adaptation, but he passed the film over to friend Scorsese so he could make “Schindler’s List” instead. Scorsese cast Robert De Niro in the role that will be filled by Bardem, and the resulting 1991 film “Cape Fear” was a commercial success and scored Oscar nods for De Niro and Juliette Lewis.

A sequel to the classic Christmas movie The Polar Express was officially announced a while ago, and here is why the development of The Polar Express 2 is taking so long. The Polar Express is one of the most-watched movies every holiday season, with Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks' Christmas collaboration becoming an even bigger hit as time goes on. The success of the original The Polar Express has led to the announcement that The Polar Express 2 is happening, although the film is taking a while to come out thanks to a variety of factors.
While The Polar Express is now considered to be a Christmas classic, this wasn't originally the case when it was first released in 2004. The Polar Express made only $318.2 million on a budget of around $170 million, and while this means that a lot of viewers saw the film, the box office returns were pretty low.

Carl Franklin's "Devil in a Blue Dress" was exactly two years ahead of its time, almost to the day. The director's adaptation of the first installment in Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins series of noir novels would've been perfectly positioned in late 1997 to capitalize on the slow rolling box office success of Curtis Hanson's "L.A. Confidential." Both films were September releases building on buzzy debuts at the late summer Toronto International Film Festival, but "L.A. Confidential" proved zeitgeisty in ways that eluded "Devil in a Blue Dress." It kicked off a noir renaissance that saw national and local film critics writing up lists of must-see black-and-white crime flicks from the 1940s and '50s for their readers. Suddenly, mainstream moviegoers were up on terminology like "femme fatale," and eager to watch Humphrey Bogart movies that weren't "Casablanca.

“Mamma Mia 3, let’s go baby,” Seyfried told ABC News, crossing her fingers for luck. “Everybody says it’s gonna happen. But I mean, I haven’t seen a script.”
After Carpenter sang the musical’s title track by Abba at a recent Madison Square Garden concert, Seyfried agreed the Short n’ Sweet artist could “technically” play her character Sophie’s daughter in an upcoming followup.
Although Seyfried is only 13 years older than Carpenter, the interviewer noted that “age is sort of a forgettable construct” in the franchise after Cher played Meryl Streep‘s mom in the previous film,...

World War II historian John McManus dives into The Pacific's depictions of combat in the Pacific Theater, explaining why they rate highly among on-screen portrayals of the conflict. Produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, the HBO miniseries depicted the journeys of three United States marines by drawing on the memoirs of Eugene Sledge, Robert Leckie, and Chuck Tatum. Unflinching and honest in its portrayal of the conflict, The Pacific has earned widespread critical acclaim.
Over fourteen years after it first aired, The Pacific has been revised by McManus, a professor of military history, and Insider in a new expert reaction video.
Focusing on the fifth and sixth episodes of the miniseries, the historian quickly praised both its depictions of the equipment utilized by the Marine Corps, as well as the context behind some of the series' battles. He said:

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Real-life inspirations like Gary Goetzman and Jon Peters bring authenticity to the nostalgic world of Licorice Pizza. Alana Haim's debut and Cooper Hoffman's role as Gary Valentine add personal connections to the film's characters. Licorice Pizza showcases a mix of real figures like Joel Wachs and Lucy Doolittle alongside fictional characters for a rich storytelling experience.
Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza (2021) may be a fictional coming-of-age story, but the nostalgic Hollywood film features many characters portraying or based on real-life people. Licorice Pizza documents the misadventures, tumultuous friendship, and romance of Alana Kane (Alana Haim), a photographer's assistant in her mid-20s, and Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman), a 15-year-old actor and entrepreneur. Set in the early 1970s, Licorice Pizza also includes real Hollywood-set memories of Anderson and his friend Gary Goetzman.
