The most heavily censored character in South Park history is the Prophet Mohammad due to the controversies surrounding cartoons at that time. Unlike the show’s usual offensive satire, this censorship wasn’t the result of the network standard or viewers’ backlash. It was driven by threats of violence.

In 2010, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone attempted to feature the Prophet Muhammad in episodes titled 200 and 201. The episode makes statements about free speech and the double standards in the media (via Av Club). But after real-world death threats from extremist groups, Comedy Central censored the episodes. They bleeped dialogue, blocked visuals, and ultimately banned both episodes from streaming and reruns (via The Globe and Mail and ScreenRant).

The threat stemmed from the broader fallout of the Jyllands-Posten Prophet Muhammad cartoon controversy. First published in a Danish newspaper in 2005, the cartoons sparked global protests, embassy attacks, and multiple deaths.

I have been engrossed for the last week in Infidel, an autobiography that chronicles the life and times of political activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali and how she became who and what she is. Ms. Ali will be familiar to those readers of this column, who, like me, strive to never miss an episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews. She has also appeared on Fox News, CNN, and just about every news organization around the world – though I don’t know if she has ever been invited onto Al-Jazeera, even here on the U.S. version.

But if not, here’s a short version of Ms. Ali’s biography. Born into a traditional Muslim family in Somalia in 1969, her father was Hirsi Magan Isse, a leader of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front and who was actively involved in the Somalian Revolution against the Siad Barre government.

In response to the vicious murder of 10 artists working for Charlie Hebdo and 2 police officers protecting the satirical magazine’s offices, CEO of the Center for Inquiry Ronald A. Buzz: Alex Van Warmerdan’s latest film is immediately of note because it’s the first Dutch film to play the Main Comp in thirty eight years. But more excitingly, its inclusion here should bring a wider audience to the offbeat Dutch filmmaker who has been consistently making wonderously weird films since his 1986 debut, Voyeur (aka Abel). Enthusiasts may be familiar with some of his well known titles, such as The Northerners (1992), which features Theo Van Gogh in an acting role, or Grimm (2003), but the preview of his latest feature promises that Borgman may be one of the highlights of Cannes 2013.

The Gist: Borgman is the central character in Alex van Warmerdam’s dark, malevolent fable. Is he a dream or a demon, a twisted allegory or an all-too-real embodiment of our fears? Borgman is a sinister arrival in the sealed-off streets of modern suburbia.

Sometimes when you walk into a room to interview the talent from a movie, you feel underdressed somewhat, or at times, even rather uncool. Well, never has that feeling felt so prominent, upon walking in to interview the lead roles of Ben Gregor’s All Stars Theo Stevenson and Akai Osei-Mansfield, who with their suave hair do’s and trendy outfits, made me feel, well, a little bit old.

The pair – who play Ethan and Jade, respectively, were in fine spirits as their chemistry from within the film was as evident in real life, and the two teenagers discussed their close friendship. They also talk about balancing their acting careers with their schoolwork, and Akai – famed for his dancing ability – talks about his role in the film, while Theo also delves into his own dancing talents.

Los Angeles -- The search for those behind the provocative, anti-Muslim film implicated in violent protests in Egypt and Libya led Wednesday to a California Coptic Christian convicted of financial crimes who acknowledged his role in managing and providing logistics for the production.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told The Associated Press in an interview outside Los Angeles that he helped with logistics for the filming of "Innocence of Muslims," which mocked Muslims and the prophet Muhammad and may have caused inflamed mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. But doubts rose about the man’s exact identity amid a flurry of false claims about his background and role in the purported film. An Israeli filmmaker based in California went into hiding after a YouTube trailer of his movie attacking Islam’s prophet Muhammad sparked angry assaults by ultra-conservative Muslims on U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. There was not a single line or character wasted. We’ve sat and watched supporting characters like Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson), Arlo (Raymond Berry) and Johnny Crowder (David Meunier) sit back and law low but they all became relevant and important to the bigger picture and it all unfolded so creatively. Even Raylan’s hat played a big role. Graham Yost and the writers rewarded patient viewing, and did such a tremendous job of showing us more than telling it.

Controversial - and dead - filmmaker Theo Van Gogh is having a collection of his movies released on DVD in the UK next month. The Theo van Gogh Collection features three movies: Blind Date, 1-900 and Interview.

The filmmaker was murdered by Mohammed Bouyeri, a Dutch-Moroccan Muslim, after he took great offence to the director's latest film called Submission. Below we have the full press release and disc details:

"Three landmark films from the controversial and assassinated film director Theo Van Gogh will be available to buy on DVD for the first time in a 3-disc set on 9th May 2011, Rrp £29.99. Titled The Theo Van Gogh Collection, the three films are Blind Date, 1-900 and Interview and are a must own item for any fan of arthouse cinema.

Theodoor van Gogh was born in The Hague, and is the great-grandson of art dealer Theo van Gogh, the devoted younger brother of artist Vincent van Gogh.

Opening in theaters on March 18th is the new independent drama Monogamy from Murderball director Dana Adam Shapiro. The film stars Rashida Jones (The Social Network, Parks and Recreation), and Chris Messina (Devil), as well as Meital Dohan (Weeds), Zak Orth (The Other Guys), Paul Diomede (The 25th Hour), and Ivan Martin (Fighting). The man who threatened violent action against the creators of South Park for their depiction of Muhammad last year has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. The 21-year-old Virginia man, Zachary Chesser, posted a photo of slain Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh to the radical webiste RevolutionMuslim.com, and suggested that South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker might soon suffer the same fate. A few months later, the FBI arrested Chesser after he openly informed federal agents of his plans to fly overseas and join an Islamic militant group....

Earlier this year "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker received death threats from a guy who resided in Virginia for writing an episode which features Prophet Muhammad in a bear costume. Stone and Park can now at least take a breath of relief for Zachary Chesser has been arrested in charges which actually are not related to the threat.

The 20-year-old who graduated from Oakton High School was detained on Wednesday, July 21 for confessing his links to a terror group believed to have affiliation with al-Qaeda. He publicly told the FBI agents that he tried to travel to Kenya and Somalia to join Al-Shabaab, bringing along his infant son so that he would not be suspected. According to the affidavit, Chesser was barred from the July 10 flight and told by the Transportation Security Administration that he was on the no-fly list.

Happy International Everybody Draw Mohammed Day, everyone!

In light of the ongoing threats against cartoonists like Jyllands-Posten, the death of Theo van Gogh and the veiled menace against the South Park creators over their recent episode, artist Molly Norris proclaimed today as a time when we all should celebrate our freedom of speech by drawing and posting images of Mohammed, the central figure of Islam.

Creating the fictional Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor (pronounced ca-ca), her post inspired Facebook members and others to set today as the actual date for the protest and to encourage as many people as possible to draw and post That-Which-Cannot-Be-Drawn, images of Mohammed. After going viral, people from, well, everywhere are posting the images. Things are so widespread that Pakistan blocked Facebook  for the day.

South Park depicts Muhammad -- allegedly -- in a bear suit. (Turns out it was actually Santa disguised as a bear.) The organization Revolution Muslim threatens South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, suggesting that they will suffer the same fate as Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who was murdered in 2004 over his supposed dissing of Muhammad. Parker and Stone respond in this week’s episode with some dialogue referring to the threat. What happened next? Via the Associated Press: Producers of "South Park" said Thursday that Comedy Central removed a speech about intimidation and fear from their show after a radical Muslim group warned that they could be killed for insulting the Prophet Muhammad. It came during about 35 seconds of dialogue between the cartoon characters of Kyle, Jesus Christ and Santa Claus that was bleeped out. "It wasn't some meta-joke on our part," producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone said.

Over the years, "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have tried to be equal-opportunity offenders on their gleefully trash-talking cartoon, taking on everything from the Catholic church to Scientology, the mentally challenged and just about every other interest group in between with a wildly irreverent, bleep-tastic bent.

But when their comic depiction of the Muslim prophet Muhammad drew strong threats for the pair this week, they said their network, Comedy Central, stepped in and took evasive action. The episode in question showed Muhammad — whose depiction in print many Muslims consider forbidden — dressed as a bear. A radical Muslim Web site posted a threat against the two if the material aired, which included a reference to the Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh,...

Since its creation, which showed Jesus Christ and Santa Claus fighting it out for Christmas dominance, South Park has been one of the most offensive shows on TV with being religion one of its favorite targets.  From Catholicism to Scientology, almost no faith remained un-mocked.  Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are even in the process of bringing a musical about Mormons to Broadway next year. 

But that all changed after last week's 200th episode (titled "200"), which depicted the Muslim prophet Muhammad disguised in a bear suit.  One extremist Muslim website responded by posting a "warning" that reminded us of the murder of Theo Van Gogh (by an Islamic extremist in response to a film he directed about abuse against women in the Muslim faith) and saying Stone and Parker could end up the same way.  Comedy Central decided to do exactly what South Park was making fun of and censor ths week's episode,...

U.S. TV bosses censored an episode of South Park on Wednesday night after receiving threats from a radical Islamic group.

A post on RevolutionMuslim.com warned the creators of the animated comedy, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, over their controversial depiction of Prophet Muhammad dressed up in a bear suit.

The message referenced Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who was shot by fundamentalists who objected to a movie he made about the treatment of Muslim women. The post also contained the address of Comedy Central's New York office and the California production studio where the show is made.

The episode featuring the religious figure aired in America on Wednesday, but the controversial character was blocked from view by a 'Censored' banner and mention of his name was bleeped out.

A spokesman for the Comedy Central network confirmed they instigated the changes, not the South Park producers, saying, "I can't go into the thinking behind it, but I can confirm it was Comedy Central that inserted the bleeps and not South Park."

A statement from Parker and Stone, reads, "In the 14 years we've been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn't stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central, and they made a determination to alter the episode.

"(South Park character) Kyle's customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn't mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped... We'll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we'll see what happens to it."...

Comedy Central is not taking a risk of them getting killed by a radical Muslim group so they censored the "South Park" bit which was deemed an insult to the religion's Prophet Muhammad. Two recent episodes of the satirical animation featured the holy figure in bear costume which Revolution Muslim took as an insult. The group quickly responded with a message on their official website.

The post, written by Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee, said, "We have to warn [creators] Matt [Stone] and Trey [Parker] that what they are doing is stupid, and they will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh for airing this show. This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them." van Gogh is a Dutch film maker who was killed by an Islamic extremist in 2004.
