South Park: Who Is the Censored Character and Why?
Image
The most heavily censored character in South Park history is the Prophet Mohammad due to the controversies surrounding cartoons at that time. Unlike the show’s usual offensive satire, this censorship wasn’t the result of the network standard or viewers’ backlash. It was driven by threats of violence.

In 2010, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone attempted to feature the Prophet Muhammad in episodes titled 200 and 201. The episode makes statements about free speech and the double standards in the media (via Av Club). But after real-world death threats from extremist groups, Comedy Central censored the episodes. They bleeped dialogue, blocked visuals, and ultimately banned both episodes from streaming and reruns (via The Globe and Mail and ScreenRant).

The threat stemmed from the broader fallout of the Jyllands-Posten Prophet Muhammad cartoon controversy. First published in a Danish newspaper in 2005, the cartoons sparked global protests, embassy attacks, and multiple deaths.

From ‘Saltburn’s Scene-Stealing Butler to Napoleon’s Limping Schemer: Paul Rhys on His “Bookends of British Brilliance”
Image
There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments in Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s darkly comic and voyeuristic exploration of the British aristocracy being released on Friday by Amazon MGM Studios. Despite the hugely impressive efforts of Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, however, most don’t belong to the lead cast, but to Paul Rhys.

As Duncan, the imperious and terrifying butler, the Welsh actor silently steals scenes from under the toffee noses of both those he dutifully serves at the Saltburn mansion (including Pike, Grant, Jacob Elordi and Alison Oliver) and the lower-class interloper he’s keeping a beady eye on (Barry Keoghan) each time he appears with hilariously po-faced magnificence.

And it’s a face that crops up again in another starry title landing late in the awards season corridor. In Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated biopic Napoleon, out Nov. 22 via Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures, Rhys plays Talleyrand, the crafty...

South Park: Why Episodes "200" And "201" Were Banned
Image
There are two banned South Park episodes from season 14, "200" and "201", that are so infamous they've gained near urban-legend status (alongside the South Park Cartoon Wars and Super Best Friends episodes). The Trey Parker and Matt Stone comedy is well known for its crude and controversial material, and while there are some South Park episodes that have aged badly, "200" and "201" caused such an uproar that they were pulled from circulation on Comedy Central, South Park Studios website, and any streaming platform that airs the show. There are five South Park episodes banned in total, but season 14 episodes "200" and "201" are especially infamous because they sparked an enormous outcry from Middle-Eastern terrorism groups over the South Park Muhammad image.

Censorship was at the heart of the South Park season 14 episodes "200" and "201." The story celebrates the landmark of the show's 200th episode by referencing several past storylines — including the South Park Cartoon Wars episode...

Film Review: Dreams (1990) by Akira Kurosawa
“I had the following dream…”

When “Ran” was released in 1985 many cinephiles as well as critics thought it would be the swan song of director Akira Kurosawa, after a career which had spanned over 40 years starting with the first film of his in 1943. The Japanese had helped to put Japan on the map internationally in terms of cinema with classics such as “The Seven Samurai”, “Rashomon”, “Stray Dog” and “Kagemusha”. With “Ran” it was clear, considering the age of the filmmaker, that his career had probably reached its end, which was only emphasized by the fact that although “Ran” was praised by critics worldwide it made very little money.

However, it was his dream which made Kurosawa go back to the medium he had mastered so many times in the past. Ever since he heard about the dream journal of famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, he kept such a journal...

Review: Round-Up: “At Eternity’s Gate”, “The Clovehitch Killer”, “Jonathan”, and “The Last Race”
For this week’s review round-up, it’s a foursome! The quartet of titles today are a real mixed bag, which happens. We have two misfires, one mild recommendation, and a mixed bag that I really hemmed and hawed about in terms of a thumbs up or thumbs down. You’ll see which are which shortly, but the four films are the Vincent van Gogh biopic At Eternity’s Gate, the horror hybrid The Clovehitch Killer, the science fiction tinged psychological drama Jonathan, and the documentary The Last Race. These movies are very different, to say the least. The only thing they have in common? Well, that would be that I’m about to discuss them all right now… Here we go: — At Eternity’s Gate At one early stage in the game, At Eternity’s Gate seemed like a potentially big Academy Award player. Some high profile film festival debuts,...

Robert Gulaczyk in Loving Vincent (2017)
‘Loving Vincent’ Review: The World’s First Oil-Painted Feature is a Truly Insane Vincent van Gogh Tribute — Telluride
Robert Gulaczyk in Loving Vincent (2017)
Vladimir Nakobov’s 1938 novel “Laughter in the Dark” begins with its rich and horny (but happily married) hero arriving at the vision that will ultimately ruin his life. A retired art critic with cinematic aspirations, old Albinus is struck by the idea of taking a famous painter, “preferably of the Dutch School,” and animating one of his signature works into the stuff of motion pictures. Film technology was still in its infancy, and it made anything seem possible. What if someone could use it to breathe new life into a static canvas, adding new dimensions to the artist’s vision and illustrating what might have happened in the moments before and after the one that was immortalized in oil?

Albinus, to his credit, recognized the unique challenges that might be involved in such an endeavor. “It would entail a delicacy of work calling for novel improvements in the method of animation,...

‘Rat Film’ Teaser: Cinema Guild Picks Up Theo Anthony’s Acclaimed and Astounding Documentary — Watch
Rat Film (2016)
If two is a trend, 2016 is the year of fascinating documentaries about some of the planet’s most misunderstood vermin: Rats. Between Morgan Spurlock’s aptly named “Rats” and Theo Anthony’s debut feature “Rat Film,” the world is suddenly privy to some shocking new revelations about the long-tailed beasties. Spurlock’s doc has been available since September, but Anthony’s Locarno-premiering doc has been looking for a home since it bowed earlier this year. It’s got one now — plus an enthralling new teaser trailer to go right alongside it.

Review: ‘Microbe and Gasoline’ Is Michel Gondry At His Least Whimsical
Theo van Gogh
In 2008, the satirical website The Onion published a story entitled “Michel Gondry Entertained For Days By New Cardboard Box,” poking a bit of fun at the French filmmaker’s ability to find whimsy and imagination in the most unexpected of places. That Gondry’s movies revel in the fantastic and often eschew anything resembling the cynical is hardly news, but that he’s continued to invest himself in the creation of those kind of films (save for that brief foray into superhero fare with “The Green Hornet”) is certainly worth pointing out on a regular basis.

Gotham, Ep. 2.11, “Worse Than A Crime”
Gotham, Season 2, Episode 11, “Worse Than A Crime”

Written by Bruno Heller

Directed by Jeffrey Hunt

Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox

The midseason finale closes off the Galavan arc with a bang and kicks the doors wide open for a second half of season two that will take the Rise of the Villains to the next level. The season has been building up to Galavan and his family getting their revenge on Gotham City through the ritual killing of Bruce Wayne, bringing us this week to a fatal showdown between Galavan and a motley crew of police detectives, a crime kingpin, a military trained butler, and a street smart cat burglar, all of whom come to Wayne’s rescue. It’s like watching a western, where a group of lawless rogues unite forces against one common enemy, Theo Galavan.

All this season Gordon has been struggling with crossing the...

Mindy Newell: Defining Oneself
I have been engrossed for the last week in Infidel, an autobiography that chronicles the life and times of political activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali and how she became who and what she is. Ms. Ali will be familiar to those readers of this column, who, like me, strive to never miss an episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews. She has also appeared on Fox News, CNN, and just about every news organization around the world – though I don’t know if she has ever been invited onto Al-Jazeera, even here on the U.S. version.

But if not, here’s a short version of Ms. Ali’s biography. Born into a traditional Muslim family in Somalia in 1969, her father was Hirsi Magan Isse, a leader of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front and who was actively involved in the Somalian Revolution against the Siad Barre government.

On The Assassination of Comedians
In response to the vicious murder of 10 artists working for Charlie Hebdo and 2 police officers protecting the satirical magazine’s offices, CEO of the Center for Inquiry Ronald A. Lindsay said, “We are heartbroken by the unthinkable and cowardly attack at the magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris today, and outraged that such a barbaric act was a response to journalists and satirists exercising their right to free expression.” Lindsay is no stranger to the fight for free speech. His center’s publication Free Inquiry was the first in the Us (and for a while, the only) to publish the Mohammed cartoons from the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten which prompted global riots — cartoons that Charlie Hebdo also reprinted alongside their own dryly funny drawings of Islam’s prophet lamenting the difficulty of being loved by idiots. The only problem with Lindsay’s statement, and really with the world, is that this morning’s assassination isn’t “unthinkable.” On...

Steve Buscemi: 'I hope people remember the shutdown in the next elections'
The Boardwalk Empire star on how the Republicans have held the Us hostage and why the pursuit of money is not a worthy goal

Dressed in dark colours and a black baseball cap, in person the 55-year-old Steve Buscemi cuts basically the same slight, rumpled figure we met a quarter-century ago in Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train. He might be a roadie coming off a world tour. His famously exophthalmic eyes are a washed-out blue and he's tired, back home in Brooklyn after staying at his house in upstate New York. He likes to go there and hang out and do nothing, he says, maybe take a walk or do a bit of yardwork: he spent the weekend raking leaves. Self-effacing, friendly, polite, it's clear he's here under low-grade sufferance; interviews, he says in his quick, metallic, slightly strangulated way, "aren't my favourite thing to do".

He is a patient...

Top 20 Alternative Picks for Cannes 2013: Alex Van Warmerdan’s Borgman
Borgman – Alex Van Warmerdan

Section: Main Competition

Buzz: Alex Van Warmerdan’s latest film is immediately of note because it’s the first Dutch film to play the Main Comp in thirty eight years. But more excitingly, its inclusion here should bring a wider audience to the offbeat Dutch filmmaker who has been consistently making wonderously weird films since his 1986 debut, Voyeur (aka Abel). Enthusiasts may be familiar with some of his well known titles, such as The Northerners (1992), which features Theo Van Gogh in an acting role, or Grimm (2003), but the preview of his latest feature promises that Borgman may be one of the highlights of Cannes 2013.

The Gist: Borgman is the central character in Alex van Warmerdam’s dark, malevolent fable. Is he a dream or a demon, a twisted allegory or an all-too-real embodiment of our fears? Borgman is a sinister arrival in the sealed-off streets of modern suburbia.

They also talk about balancing their acting careers with their schoolwork, and Akai – famed for his dancing ability – talks about his role in the film, while Theo also delves into his own dancing talents.

The Innocence Of Morons – Sam Bacile & Cranked-Out Propaganda
If you find yourself with fifteen minutes to kill this evening, you can go to YouTube and pull up the video that is currently causing murder and mayhem and destruction in the Middle East this evening. No, it isn’t Gangnam Style. It’s that strange new cinematic sensation, Innocence of Muslims.

I’m not going to put up the link, for a number of reasons that are obvious at least to me. I’m also going to steer clear of any type of free speech arguments, and the ethics of propaganda filmmaking in the 21st century made for the sole purpose of getting under the skin of already touchy Muslims. In terms of quality, The Innocence of Muslims falls far below the mark set by Theo van Gogh with Submission, the intentionally provacative short film which ultimately led to Van Gogh’s decapitation.

In terms of sheer quality, the...

Man Says He Was Behind Anti-Islam Movie That Started Riots
Terry Jones
Los Angeles -- The search for those behind the provocative, anti-Muslim film implicated in violent protests in Egypt and Libya led Wednesday to a California Coptic Christian convicted of financial crimes who acknowledged his role in managing and providing logistics for the production.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told The Associated Press in an interview outside Los Angeles that he helped with logistics for the filming of "Innocence of Muslims," which mocked Muslims and the prophet Muhammad and may have caused inflamed mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. He provided the first details about a shadowy production group behind the film.

Nakoula denied he directed the film and said he knew the self-described filmmaker, Sam Bacile. But the cell phone number that AP contacted Tuesday to reach the filmmaker who identified himself as Sam Bacile traced to the same address near Los Angeles where AP found Nakoula. Federal...

The man behind video excerpts from an anti-Muslim movie that provoked mobs in Egypt and Libya said Wednesday that he has gone into hiding. The filmmaker, who identified himself in a telephone interview with The Associated Press as Sam Bacile, said he is an Israeli-born, Jewish writer and director of Innocence of Muslims. Bacile was the name used to publish excerpts of the movie online as early as July 2.

But some key facts about Bacile’s...

Anti-Islam Indie Film Sparks Mob Protests That Lead to Deaths of Four Americans in Libya
Sadly, the biggest independent movie news of the day is the savage deaths of several Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, in a mob attack in Benghazi over an anti-Muslim film. Made by Israeli-born director Sam Bacile, who has described Islam as a "cancer" and has since gone into hiding, "Innocence of Islam" takes aim at the Prophet Muhammed, a religious icon whose perceived mistreatment has led to previous killings by enraged followers. In 2004, Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh was killed by an Islamic militant after he made "Submission," a film that criticized the religion's treatment of women. When a trailer for the low-budget "Innocence" aired on Egyptian TV Tuesday, it sparked riots in Egypt and Libya, including at the U.S. embassy. The murders prompted public statements from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Obama, who strongly condemned the attacks. "On a personal...

Director of anti-Islam film goes into hiding; says 'Islam is a cancer, period'
An Israeli filmmaker based in California went into hiding after a YouTube trailer of his movie attacking Islam’s prophet Muhammad sparked angry assaults by ultra-conservative Muslims on U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three American members of his staff were killed.

Speaking by phone Tuesday from an undisclosed location, writer and director Sam Bacile remained defiant, saying Islam is a cancer and that the 56-year-old intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

Protesters angered over Bacile’s film opened fire on and burned down the U.

Sons of Anarchy Star Kim Coates Says ‘Tig is Completely Off the Leash This Year’
“Kurt Sutter has really got together some of the most amazing character actors in the business,” says Kim Coates, who stars as Tig on FX’s Sons of Anarchy.

Recently, we spoke with Coates regarding the upcoming season as well some of the standout Tig moments from season’s past.

“He just keeps fucking up, doesn’t he?” Coates stated. “He shoots first.”

Season 4 ended with the death of Laroy’s girlfriend, Damon Pope’s daughter. We’ll see the fallout from Tig’s actions (there are some significant consequences) in the Sons of Anarchy Season 5 premiere.

Justified Season 3 Finale Review: Just Another Man In A Hat
There are season finales, and there are Justified season finales, and “Slaughterhouse” brought not just the season to a new high, but the entire series. We’ve sat and watched supporting characters like Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson), Arlo (Raymond Berry) and Johnny Crowder (David Meunier) sit back and law low but they all became relevant and important to the bigger picture and it all unfolded so creatively. Even Raylan’s hat played a big role. Graham Yost and the writers rewarded patient viewing, and did such a tremendous job of showing us more than telling it.

Episode 312: “Coalition”

It's one of the most popular in the city.

Crowd scene: Surprisingly eclectic for a cinema situated across the road from the University of Amsterdam. There are plenty of students, but seniors, young professionals, and even children populate the downstairs cafe on a Friday night.

Back story: A dramatic history that dates back to the second world war,...

The 21-year-old Virginia man, Zachary Chesser, posted a photo of slain Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh to the radical webiste RevolutionMuslim.com, and suggested that South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker might soon suffer the same fate. Man Who Threatened South Park Creators Gets 25 Years in Prison
The man who encouraged the murder of Matt Stone and Trey Parker over an episode of "South Park" that portrayed the Muslim prophet Muhammed dressed as a bear was sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday. Zachary Chesser had written in multiple internet posts over a four-month period last year that the "South Park" creators should "wind up like Theo Van Gogh," who was murdered by a radical Muslim because he objected to the Dutch filmmaker's negative portrayal of Islamic society. But Stone and Parker were only a piece of the case against Chesser, who also tried on two occasions to join al-Shabab, a terrorist group in Somalia, and encouraged like-minded people on the internet to leave suspicious packages in public places in the Us so that if and when real bombs were planted they'd go unnoticed. "Zachary Chesser will spend 25 years in prison for advocating the murder of Us citizens...

The 'A' List
Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci share more in common than critical accolades and impressive resumes. Both actors enjoyed professional breakthroughs somewhat later in life, after struggling through their 20s and early 30s. Each credits the Steven Bochco series "Murder One" as a major turning point in their careers. And both share similar perspectives on their craft and the business -- not to mention a wicked sense of humor.Clarkson and Tucci have teamed up before in projects Tucci has co-written and directed, beginning with the 2000 film "Joe Gould's Secret." In 2007, the pair played a married couple estranged by tragedy who repeatedly pretend to meet for the first time in "Blind Date," inspired by a film from the late Dutch director Theo van Gogh. This month, the duo will reteam as a far more lighthearted couple in "Easy A," a smart new comedy from director Will Gluck and writer Bert V. Royal.

His actions will make him a very different character, for the remainder of Season 3. Man Who Threatened 'South Park' Arrested and Questioned
Earlier this year "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker received death threats from a guy who resided in Virginia for writing an episode which features Prophet Muhammad in a bear costume. Stone and Park can now at least take a breath of relief for Zachary Chesser has been arrested in charges which actually are not related to the threat.

The 20-year-old who graduated from Oakton High School was detained on Wednesday, July 21 for confessing his links to a terror group believed to have affiliation with al-Qaeda. He publicly told the FBI agents that he tried to travel to Kenya and Somalia to join Al-Shabaab, bringing along his infant son so that he would not be suspected. According to the affidavit, Chesser was barred from the July 10 flight and told by the Transportation Security Administration that he was on the no-fly list.

Chesser, a convert to Islam, in fact...

News: Today is Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!
Happy International Everybody Draw Mohammed Day, everyone!

In light of the ongoing threats against cartoonists like Jyllands-Posten, the death of Theo van Gogh and the veiled menace against the South Park creators over their recent episode, artist Molly Norris proclaimed today as a time when we all should celebrate our freedom of speech by drawing and posting images of Mohammed, the central figure of Islam.

Creating the fictional Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor (pronounced ca-ca), her post inspired Facebook members and others to set today as the actual date for the protest and to encourage as many people as possible to draw and post That-Which-Cannot-Be-Drawn, images of Mohammed. After going viral, people from, well, everywhere are posting the images. Things are so widespread that Pakistan blocked Facebook  for the day.

I posted the image above to my Facebook page this morning. Yes, it was created in five minutes. No, I don't have any artistic talent.

question of the day: Did Comedy Central do the right thing in censoring ‘South Park’?
South Park depicts Muhammad -- allegedly -- in a bear suit. (Turns out it was actually Santa disguised as a bear.) The organization Revolution Muslim threatens South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, suggesting that they will suffer the same fate as Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who was murdered in 2004 over his supposed dissing of Muhammad. Parker and Stone respond in this week’s episode with some dialogue referring to the threat. What happened next? Via the Associated Press: Producers of "South Park" said Thursday that Comedy Central removed a speech about intimidation and fear from their show after a radical Muslim group warned that they could be killed for insulting the Prophet Muhammad. It came during about 35 seconds of dialogue between the cartoon characters of Kyle, Jesus Christ and Santa Claus that was bleeped out. "It wasn't some meta-joke on our part," producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone said.

'South Park' Creators Say Muhammad Episode Was Censored Without Their Approval
Trey Parker and Matt Stone claim Comedy Central censored the controversial episode after they submitted it.

By Gil Kaufman

Over the years, "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have tried to be equal-opportunity offenders on their gleefully trash-talking cartoon, taking on everything from the Catholic church to Scientology, the mentally challenged and just about every other interest group in between with a wildly irreverent, bleep-tastic bent.

But when their comic depiction of the Muslim prophet Muhammad drew strong threats for the pair this week, they said their network, Comedy Central, stepped in and took evasive action. The episode in question showed Muhammad — whose depiction in print many Muslims consider forbidden — dressed as a bear. A radical Muslim Web site posted a threat against the two if the material aired, which included a reference to the Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh,...

South Park Censored By Comedy Central
Since its creation, which showed Jesus Christ and Santa Claus fighting it out for Christmas dominance, South Park has been one of the most offensive shows on TV with being religion one of its favorite targets.  From Catholicism to Scientology, almost no faith remained un-mocked.  Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are even in the process of bringing a musical about Mormons to Broadway next year.

But that all changed after last week's 200th episode (titled "200"), which depicted the Muslim prophet Muhammad disguised in a bear suit.  One extremist Muslim website responded by posting a "warning" that reminded us of the murder of Theo Van Gogh (by an Islamic extremist in response to a film he directed about abuse against women in the Muslim faith) and saying Stone and Parker could end up the same way.  Comedy Central decided to do exactly what South Park was making fun of and censor ths week's episode,...

South Park Bosses Censor Show After Threats
Matt Stone and Trey Parker in South Park (1997)
U.S. TV bosses censored an episode of South Park on Wednesday night after receiving threats from a radical Islamic group.

A post on RevolutionMuslim.com warned the creators of the animated comedy, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, over their controversial depiction of Prophet Muhammad dressed up in a bear suit.

The message referenced Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who was shot by fundamentalists who objected to a movie he made about the treatment of Muslim women. The post also contained the address of Comedy Central's New York office and the California production studio where the show is made.

The episode featuring the religious figure aired in America on Wednesday, but the controversial character was blocked from view by a 'Censored' banner and mention of his name was bleeped out.

A spokesman for the Comedy Central network confirmed they instigated the changes, not the South Park producers, saying, "I can't go into the thinking behind it, but I can confirm it was Comedy Central that inserted the bleeps and not South Park."

A statement from Parker and Stone, reads, "In the 14 years we've been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn't stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central, and they made a determination to alter the episode.

"(South Park character) Kyle's customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn't mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped... We'll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we'll see what happens to it."...

Matt and Trey Respond to Censored 'South Park'
Comedy Central is not taking a risk of them getting killed by a radical Muslim group so they censored the "South Park" bit which was deemed an insult to the religion's Prophet Muhammad. Two recent episodes of the satirical animation featured the holy figure in bear costume which Revolution Muslim took as an insult. The group quickly responded with a message on their official website.

The post, written by Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee, said, "We have to warn [creators] Matt [Stone] and Trey [Parker] that what they are doing is stupid, and they will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh for airing this show. This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them." van Gogh is a Dutch film maker who was killed by an Islamic extremist in 2004.

Matt and Trey's defense was, "It wasn't some meta-joke on our part." The duo who is...
