Artists Equity, the independent studio founded by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Gerry Cardinale, has signed an overall theatrical feature film agreement with Sony Pictures. Under the three-year agreement, Sony will distribute the theatrical films globally, which will be developed and produced by Artists Equity. Sony will finance the films and handle all ancillaries, with Artists Equity having the option to co-finance individual projects.

“Artists Equity, in the short span of its existence, has proven remarkably adept at developing and producing high quality commercial films,” said Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman. “This is not a surprise to me as I have known the two creative ‘Pros from Dover’ for many years and always admired their smarts, talent and moxie. Now that Ben and Matt and their team have set their sights firmly on the high bar of the theatrical market, Sony is lucky as hell to be partnering with them.

Image
Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and RedBird Capital Gerry Cardinale’s independent artist-led studio, Artists Equity, has signed an overall three-year theatrical feature film agreement with Sony Pictures.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity Shakes Up Leadership Team
Image
After launching just over two years ago, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production banner Artists Equity is retooling its executive ranks and bolstering leadership with a new business affairs hire.

Former Paramount Pictures CEO Andrew Gumpert is joining the shingle in a newly created role of president, business affairs and strategy, the company said Wednesday. Damon and Affleck are also promoting Dillon West, who joined Artists Equity in November 2022 at launch from investor RedBird Capital Partners, to COO.

The moves were made in tandem with the news that Artists Equity founding COO Michael Joe would be stepping back from the role into an advisory position but will remain on the company’s board of directors. Joe joined Affleck and Damon’s venture after runs at STX Films and Universal Pictures.

Gumpert’s time at Paramount and Nickelodeon Studios — he worked on Top Gun: Maverick, the Mission: Impossible series and...

Unstoppable – Review
Image
A scene from Unstoppable. Courtesy of Amazon MGM

Generally, sports films aren’t for me but Unstoppable is an exception, because this remarkable true story is more that an inspiring sport film but also a true story of human character, strength and determination, and even love and family. It is more than it seems at first. The true story of champion wrestler Anthony Robles, born with only one leg but with an unstoppable drive to succeed in the sport he loves, is inspiring but so is the personal story that goes with it. Robles faced a lot of challenges from the start but had one stroke of really good luck of having a supportive, loving parent in his teenaged mother. Actually, Unstoppable is not really about sports (although it does have impressive wrestling scenes), but about human courage and drive, and well, heart.

Anthony Robles faces challenges beyond just having been born with one leg,...

'Unstoppable' Review: Jharrel Jerome Leads a Crowd-Pleasing Biopic About a Resilient Wrestler
Image
It seems like wrestling films are in, since three projects with this theme are featured in the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival lineup. Yet, one stands out from the rest as a compelling true story about an athlete who defeated the odds and won matches using only one leg. Unstoppable, a directorial debut by Air and Argo editor William Goldenberg, recounts a portion of Anthony Robles' life as an emerging wrestler on the lookout for a full-ride scholarship. Born without one leg, the athlete was undermined by peers, coaches, and even his own family, but that never prevented him from deliberately showing everyone that he is more than capable of leaving the mat victorious. As the title hints at, Robles might've felt discouraged at times, but never to the point of giving up, thus why his story is inspirational. Although the film is by no means a groundbreaking biopic, it has...

Unstoppable's Jharrel Jerome & Anthony Robles Share Stories Of Strength
Image
Anthony Robles's hero's journey is brought to cinematic life by Jharrel Jerome in Unstoppable. The William Goldenberg-directed film chronicles Robles's career as an amateur wrestler, from his state-wide successes in high school to his nationally recognized achievements in college, all the while he is attempting to fulfill the fatherly role of his household for his mother and his siblings.

Unstoppable represents Jerome's biggest role to date. He first broke out as a member of the ensemble of Moonlight, 2016's Best Picture winner, and joined the ever-expansive Spider-Verse world in 2023, voicing Miles G. Morales in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's final scene. He is set to have a pronounced role in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

‘Unstoppable’ True Story: Where Is Wrestler Anthony Robles Now?
Image
If you believe that a dreamer is only as big as his dream, then I think that Unstoppable made us privy to the life of one of the biggest dreamers to have ever existed. Directed by William Goldenberg, Unstoppable is inspired by the true story of the champion wrestler Anthony Robles. The boy who was born with only one leg decided that he would choose a sport where the opponent couldn’t run away from him. I have learned today that whatever bizarre events you see in the film, wherever you feel like an incident is too good to be true, most of it actually happened in real life. However, it goes without saying that the makers have taken a few creative liberties merely to dramatize the real events to some extent. So, let’s find out how Anthony Robles defied the odds and how he won the wrestling championship.

‘Unstoppable’ Director William Goldenberg on Making the Transition from Editing
Image
William Goldenberg has been working as an editor for over 30 years, during which time he has collaborated with A-list directors like Michael Mann, Kathryn Bigelow, and Ben Affleck, whose “Argo” won the Oscar for best editing. Yet when the time came to direct his first feature, the inspirational sports drama “Unstoppable,” there was still one thing made Goldenberg apprehensive: working with actors.

“That was the thing I was most nervous about,” Goldenberg told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “Luckily for me, I got my first choice for everybody, and they’re all spectacularly good actors, so it’s not like I’m taking a first-time actor and trying to mold the performance. It was about making sure we’re all making the same film, that we all have the same goals and are trying to interpret the scenes in the same way.”

Goldenberg quickly realized that there was a direct...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind awards season’s buzziest films continues with Amazon MGM Studios and Actors Equity’s Unstoppable, the inspirational sports drama directed by Oscar-winning Argo editor William Goldenberg in his feature helming debut and starring Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez.

Eric Champnella, Alex Harris and John Hindman co-wrote the screenplay, based on NCAA national wrestling champ Anthony Robles’ book (written with Austin Murphy) Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion. It chronicles the three-time All American’s journey to the top against every expectation after he was born without a right leg.

Unstoppable
Image
Unstoppable — not to be confused with the Tony Scott train movie from 2010 — is the sports-movie-iest of all sports movies ever to sports-movie. It is Rocky, The Mighty Ducks, Bill Durham and The Blind Side, rolled into one inspirational, dedicational, motivational package. No sports cliché goes unturned in this true underdog rags-to-riches story of one man’s triumph against adversity through physical and mental excellence. But it excavates and reanimates that familiar formula with such charm and brio that it largely wins you over — especially when buoyed by two excellent lead performances.

One of those performances comes from Jharrel Jerome, playing real-life one-legged wrestler Anthony Robles. Born with a congenital amputation (and portrayed in the film with faultless CG paint-out effects), we meet him as an already successful and committed high-school wrestler, looking to make the move to college. He wrestles, and beats, able-bodied wrestlers — the film never explores the backstory of his disability,...

Unstoppable Review | Jharrel Jerome Excels in a Typical Sports Drama
Image
Despite being a crowded genre that borrows from itself frequently, it's hard to resist a good sports underdog story. You may have never played an ounce of football in your life, but I’ll be damned if Rudy doesn’t make you want to do the impossible. The real-life story of Anthony Robles is incredible, and William Goldenberg’s Unstoppable wants to make sure you know it. Despite being born with one leg, he became the 2011 125-pound NCAA wrestling Champion, capping off a 36-0 undefeated season. It’s a story about beating the odds that feels right at home on the big screen and will fit well within the echelon of sports dramas before it.

However, that may be the biggest problem with Unstoppable — it's a little too much like all the movies in this genre. Anthony's story is the main course around which all ingredients are built, but in that respect,...

Unstoppable Review: Jennifer Lopez & Jharrel Jerome Are Fierce In Powerhouse Sports Drama With Heart
Image
This review was originally published on September 9, 2024, as a part of our Toronto International Film Festival coverage.

It’s been a minute since a sports drama has made me teary, but Unstoppable is powerful storytelling that elicits an emotional response. Directed by William Goldenberg from a screenplay by Eric Champnella, John Hindman, and Alex Harris, Unstoppable is based on the true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome), who, with only one leg, won the national wrestling championship in 2011. The sports drama is deeply moving, not only because of Robles’ phenomenal accomplishments, but his mother Judy’s (Jennifer Lopez), as well. It’s the kind of movie that’s simultaneously a feel-good tear-jerker that’s deeply personal in the themes it tackles.

Despite being born with one leg, Anthony Robles overcomes significant challenges both at home and in the competitive world of wrestling. His determination and relentless drive lead him to...

Jennifer Lopez Says ‘Unstoppable’ Subject Judy Robles Enriched Her ‘as an Artist and as a Woman and as a Mother’
Image
Of all the awards Jennifer Lopez could have received at IndieWire Honors, held in Los Angeles December 5, winning the Maverick Award “held a special place” in her heart. In fact, she even looked up the dictionary definition of “maverick,” which she related in her speech accepting the prize.

“I wanted have to the real definition, Ok!,” Lopez said. “It means an individualist, a nonconformist, a free spirit, an original, a trendsetter, an eccentric, an outsider, a rebel, a dissident, a disruptor. Ok, I could go on, but I’m not going to. But seriously, what a beautiful thing to be recognized for, for charting your own course. I’m appreciative of being seen in that way and recognized for who I am and kind of who I’ve had to be because I think every artist and everyone in this room has had to figure out how to do it their own way,...

Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, and Jharrel Jerome in Unstoppable (2024)
‘We’re all wrestling with something all the time’: Jennifer Lopez on disability, domestic abuse, and dealing with the next Trump presidency
Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, and Jharrel Jerome in Unstoppable (2024)
In Unstoppable, Jennifer Lopez plays the mother of wrestler Anthony Robles, who has one leg. She, co-star Jharrel Jerome and the real life mother-son duo, talk about why the engrossing sports drama is a film for our times

Unstoppable, the new film about the high school and college career of wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with one leg, follows the established tropes of a Hollywood sports drama. There are euphoric wins and devastating losses, tearful familial moments and heartwarming triumphs over adversity – but it never feels dull, thanks to William Goldenberg’s pacey direction and engrossing lead performances from Jharrel Jerome as Robles and Jennifer Lopez as his mother, Judy. Tapping into the same mixture of fight and pathos that made her performances in Out of Sight and Hustlers so compelling, Lopez owns the film, culminating in a rousing moment in its final act when – after hearing a member...

Why So Many Character Dramas This Season Use Special Effects
Image
A biopic of a British pop star, a psychological thriller and a sports drama don’t have much in common on the surface. But Better Man, A Different Man and Unstoppable do share at least one quality: They all use effects to inform and illuminate character.

In each film, visual effects, both practical and computer-generated, help audiences embrace something unconventional about their protagonists and better understand their virtues and even insecurities. As A Different Man makeup artist and prosthetic designer Mike Marino says of his project, “The message is you don’t have to try to look like something else to be a good person, a quality person, an amazing person.”

Marshaling the technology to achieve that, however, is no easy feat.

In Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man, Sebastian Stan stars as Edward Lemuel, a struggling actor with low self-esteem who undergoes a medical procedure to cure him of...

How Jharrel Jerome Evolved Into a Grown Man While Making Sports Drama ‘Unstoppable’
Image
Jharrel Jerome rubbed his chin while recalling a phone call with college wrestling champ Anthony Robles. The conversation occurred four years ago as Jerome was preparing to play Robles in the film “Unstoppable” (opening Dec. 6).

“Covid had shut us down in pre-production, and I was giving Anthony words of encouragement that we would tell his story,” Jerome told TheWrap. “I made this promise and told him, ‘As long as I have this baby face on me, I’m going to play you in this movie. Even if I’m 35 years old, I’ll age down.’ And I meant it. When you get to know Anthony, stuff like this becomes really personal.”

Jerome, the star of “I’m a Virgo” and “When They See Us,” was true to his promise and even finished “Unstoppable” before his 30s (He turned 27 in October). Based on Robles’ own sports memoir, the movie traces his journey from high school to college,...

‘Unstoppable’s Subjects Risked Baring Their Personal Pain To Provide Inspiration – Contenders Los Angeles
Image
While one-legged wrestler Anthony Robles and his mother Judy, the subjects of the sports drama Unstoppable, knew turning their story into a film could inspire audiences to overcome their own obstacles, they also had to overcome their own trepidation about revealing the pain of their personal struggles on a massive platform.

“As we thought about it more, we’re like, ‘Wow, the world’s going to see our story,’” Anthony revealed during the Unstoppable panel at Deadline Contenders Film event on Saturday. “We realized that it wouldn’t just be the victory moments, it wouldn’t just be the happy times. It’d be those painful moments and the things that we weren’t really sure about how we wanted to open up discussing and sharing.”

“I was terrified, truthfully,” Judy Robles, who’s portrayed by Jennifer Lopez in the film, agreed. “It’s scary because you see the messes...

Jennifer Lopez & Anthony Ramos Mattel Animated Movie ‘Bob The Builder’ Heading To Amazon MGM Studios – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Sources are telling us that Amazon MGM Studios has won the bidding war for Mattel’s animated feature Bob the Builder which had Netflix, DreamWorks Animation and others vying for the project. Not all deals are complete, I understand.

Bob the Builder is being produced by Jennifer Lopez‘s Nuyorican Productions and ShadowMachine (who were behind Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and it stars Twisters actor Anthony Ramos in the title role. It was Ramos’ idea to deliver a Bob the Builder set in Puerto Rico, in a story that’s about the resilience of the Latino culture. He is a producer on the film. Bob’s motto in Spanish: “Si se puede” aka “Yes we can.” Felipe Vargas is adapting. Tbd on whether the movie is for Prime or the big screen.

Lopez isn’t currently in talks for a voiceover role in Bob the Builder, I understand.
