‘Leave One Day’ Review: Cannes Opener Is a Slight but Winning Musical That Croons French Nostalgia

Chalk it up to Cannes’ unique position that you’re reading this review.

Which isn’t to say that Amélie Bonnin’s locally flavored jukebox musical “Leave One Day” is anything close to a wash — nor does this year’s Cannes opening film dishonor the (at best) checkered legacy of recent predecessors such as Michel Hazanavicius’ “Final Cut,” Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” and the botched Johnny Depp comeback “Jeanne du Barry.” Hell, by way of pleasure and ambition, this slight-but-winsome dramedy offers a step-up from recent vintages; by way of international resonance, however, this latest opener seems unlikely for a world tour.

Underscoring the strength and scope of French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s legacy around the world, the documentary “Jean Paul Gaultier Freak And Chic,” which chronicles the making of Gaultier’s ongoing popular show in Paris, has been luring distributors in key markets.

Sold by Studiocanal and produced by Capa, the documentary has already been picked up across Asia, in Japan (Kino), South Korea (Cree Pictures), Hong-Kong (Edko) and Taiwan (Moviecloud), as well as Australia/New Zealand (Madman), Israel (Shoval), Cis & Baltics (Pioneer) and ex-yugoslavia (McF Megacom).

The documentary, directed by Yann L’Hénoret, followed Gaultier during six months as he put together his Fashion Freak Show which portrays his life and career’s milestone with clips from Madonna, Rossy de Palma, Line Renaud, Catherine Deneuve and Antoine de Caunes, among others. 'The Little Prince' returns in TV form
Steven Warner in The Little Prince (1974)
Paris -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery's "The Little Prince" will make a royal return to the world of entertainment with a new 18.6 million euro ($25.3 million) TV series from Method Animation, Method said at a press conference at their studios in Paris on Wednesday.

Method has partnered with France Televisions, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, la Fabrique d'Images, Dq Entertainment, Wdr, Rai Fiction, Tsr, the book's French publishing house Gallimard Jeunesse and the Saint Exupery-d'Agay estate to create a 26-minute, 52-episode TV series based on the popular children's book.

After over three years of development, Method and their partners have produced 26 hours of programming based on the work of more than 450 people and 18,200 pages of storyboards.

The series is in full CGI and stereoscopic 3D. Directed by Pierre Alain Chartier, "The Little Prince" was developed for TV by Alexandre de la Patelliere and Matthieu Delaporte.
