Movie Poster of the Week: “Maigret Sets a Trap” and the Art of Nathan Gelgud
This beautiful pair of illustrated posters for two late 50s Maigret adaptations by Jean Delannoy is the work of Nathan Gelgud, an artist who by now should be well known to cinephiles in New York and Los Angeles. Nathan is the creator of the auteur tote bag, an essential cinephilic fashion accessory for the 2010s, more on which later. Full disclosure: I was involved in the art direction on these posters at Kino Lorber, whose repertory division is re-releasing Maigret Sets a Trap (originally released in the Us as Inspector Maigret and later re-released as Woman Bait) at Metrograph today and will be releasing both films on Blu-ray in December. I’d been aware of Nathan’s work for a while, but it was his comic-book style resumé poster for Metrograph’s Alain Tanner retrospective this summer that convinced me he’d be perfect for Maigret. And, as luck would have it,...

5 Things We Learned From Liverpool Vs. Brisbane Roar
Nick Potts/Pa Wire

A sea of red shirts overpowered the tangerine orange of the Brisbane Roar as Liverpool fans blasted out their spine tingling rendition of ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’ that echoed around Lang Park. Brendan Rodgers looked unfazed by the harmonic battle cry and selected four of his new signings in his first eleven as well as Divock Origi who was out on loan at Lille last season.

Joe Gomez started at left back, Nathaniel Clyne at right back, James Milner played alongside Jordan Henderson in the middle of midfield and Danny Ings, Adam Lallana and Origi competed a 4-3-3 formation. The system didn’t look entirely comfortable and despite the Reds dominating most of the possession their counter attacks were staggered and would have looked more fluid playing a 4-1-2-1-2 that would have gave new signing Ings more comfort than being isolated on the left flank.

Liverpool Set To Sign Nathaniel Clyne For £12.5m
Tim Parker/Pa Archive

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne is set to sign for Liverpool this week for £12.5 million subject to a medical, The Mirror reports.

The Saints have accepted an offer for their star full-back and he is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Reds after completing his medical later today.

The 24-year-old who looks to be a replacement for Glen Johnson will become Liverpool’s sixth signing of the summer following the recent purchases of James Milner, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings.

Clyne made 35 appearances last season, scoring 2 goals and establishing himself as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League.

The England international who only had one year left on his existing contract will be the forth player to make the move from St Mary’s to Anfield after Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert all made the move last summer.

In development: El Brazo Grande Vs. The Living Dead
I get the feeling this one might ride the coming(?!) success of Machete with a tagline like "Zombies beware! Here comes one bad-ass Mexican!" Written and directed by Joe Gomez whose making his foray into film making from working in mold shops for some major productions (including Tron Legacy) El Brazo is slated for 2013 and it's still in the script stages but I couldn't pass up on reporting on it. Tagged as a "B" movie, this one sounds mighty fine.

Here's a brief logline:

"El Brazo and Chango have to rescue a Generals Daughter during a mass zombie invasion in exchange for their freedom."

And here's an in depth rundown, including riding a nuke Dr. Zhivago style:

Two mutant bikers, El Brazo and his trusty side kick El Chango pull into a diner to grab a bite to eat. While inside, reports of strange killings are happening around the city.
