Image
Amazon is going to take a crack at Barbershop as a TV series two decades after the last attempt didn't work out so well. ‘Barbershop’ TV series ordered at Prime Video with Jermaine Fowler starring
Image
Barbershop is back in business.

Ahead of Amazon's upfront presentation on Monday, Amazon MGM Studios officially gave a series order to comedy series Barbershop, based on the 2000s film series of the same name, to stream on Prime Video. Marshall Todd, cowriter of the original 2002 film, is writing and executive-producing, with Kevin Hart's Hartbeat producing. Max Searle (Dave) is co-showrunner and executive producer.

Jermaine Fowler (Ricky Stanicky) stars as Travis “Trav” Porter, who endeavors to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, a legendary barber at the iconic “Calvin’s” barbershop in Chicago. And while the barbers are new, the shop remains just as lively, the customers just as argumentative, and the fades are still the dopest in the city — because at Calvin’s, the community comes together for way more than just a haircut.

“We are thrilled to announce a new series based on the hilarious and innovative...

Persona (2024) Movie Review: Silly, Tacky Captivity Drama Has Neither Tension Nor Edge
Director Mike Ho
Mike Ho’s “Persona” (2024) is a kidnapping drama sans any color and texture. A woman wakes up in an unknown house. She has no recollection of the circumstances that transpired and has brought her there. She fumbles around for clues and markers that can give her a certainty or inkling of the stuff that has gone down here. Groping in the dark, she stumbles across another bruised woman, Samantha. It is only after some effort the woman recalls her name being Tricia.

What’s definite, however, is the reality of the house where the two are caged. The exits are all sealed up. But the ominousness of the captor lingers in the air. At any point, he may be back. There’s no real threat though the endangering man makes his appearance brashly. The film is essentially circling two women who are bracing themselves for the inevitable return of the kidnapper.

Two Strangers Trapped in a Home - Trailer for 'Persona' Horror Thriller
Image
"Did we do something to deserve it?" "No one deserves this..." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled the official trailer for Persona, an indie horror thriller from director Mike Ho, mostly known for making many music videos over the last decade. Set for a VOD release in December if anyone wants to watch. Not sure why they needed to use the same Persona title as the iconic 1966 Ingmar Bergman film. A woman wakes up locked in a house, injured with no memory. She's terrified yet relieved to find a woman bound in another room. These two strangers must work together to figure out what's really going on before the door is unlocked. Who is coming back for her? Why are they locked up in this house? Starring Shanti Lowry and Sophia Ali, with Andrew Howard and Omar Gooding. This doesn't look so interesting - better to just rewatch Saw again. // Continue Reading...

“I am actually super friends with [Robinson Peete] and Mark Curry,” she said on the CBS daytime talk show. “Mark Curry and her have been amazing mentors in my life. And to be able to be on the set with them at seven years old and they go, ‘Go in your room, this is adults talking,’ and now they’re like, ‘Come here, let me tell you what happened.’ It makes me very happy.”

As Raven-Symoné and her former co-stars are still in touch, Sheryl Underwood took the opportunity to ask if there was a possibility...

Netflix Has A New Christmas Movie On Global Top 10 Chart (But Is It Any Good?)
Image
A new Netflix Christmas movie, Holiday in the Vineyards, has made it onto the Global Top 10 chart. Previous Netflix Christmas movies, such as Best. Christmas. Ever! and Christmas as Usual, were poorly received by critics and audiences. While Holiday in the Vineyards may be slightly better than other recent festive movies, it still falls into the category of cheesy and forgettable Christmas films.

Netflix has a new Christmas movie, Holiday in the Vineyards, on the Global Top 10 chart, and it appears to be slightly better than the streamer's other recent holiday fare. Released December 13 on Netflix, the Christmas rom-com follows a familiar premise involving a widow who, while struggling to run the local vineyard and raise two boys, falls for a big city playboy sent to scout a new vineyard location in the area over the holidays. The Holiday in the Vineyards cast includes Josh Swickard, Sol Rodriguez, Eileen Davidson,...

Holiday In The Vineyards Cast & Character Guide
Image
"Holiday in the Vineyards" is a Christmas romance movie on Netflix, and it quickly became popular due to its premise and cast. The film follows a playboy heir to a wine company who falls in love with a widow trying to sell a vineyard, leading to predictable romantic complications. The cast, including Josh Swickard and Sol Rodríguez, adds to the film's popularity, and there may be potential for a sequel featuring the same cast.

It wouldn't be the holidays without new (cheesy) Christmas movies on Netflix, and Holiday in the Vineyards serves as the yearly entertainment for romantic comedy lovers in 2023. The film, directed by Alex Ranarivelo, premiered on December 13 and quickly jumped to the top five of the streaming service's "Top 10 Movies" list, which isn't too surprising, given its premise, timely release date, and conventionally attractive cast. The Netflix feature revolves around a playboy heir to a wine company...

Why Nicole Dow Is Betting On Originals, Exploring the New Adult Genre as Genius Entertainment’s Head of TV
Image
Popular and pre-existing IP has reigned supreme in Hollywood as most studios and streamers look to continue the success of former franchises for an easy win. But that’s not a trend Nicole Dow is aiming to pursue.

As the head of TV for Marsai Martin’s Genius Entertainment, her formula isn’t overly complicated. Dow breaks down their development slate into three specific categories: kids and family, young adult, and new adult.

The latter of which is a less explored territory. The genre first came about within the last 15 year — and only recently gained steam online with authors like Colleen Hoover (“It Ends With Us”) and Casey McQuiston leading the charge. As the name explains, new adult covers the emerging adult generation between the ages of 18-29.

“It’s the first foray into the world where your ego comes smashing into reality, or the cringe-worthy stuff that happens from...

Ali Afshar, Former Racing Pro and Holiday Movie Mogul, Looks Beyond Christmas for Growth
Image
For quite some time now, Christmas has come every day for Ali Afshar.

The actor, producer and former race car driver is founder and president of Esx Entertainment, a prolific indie film and TV production company that’s made its name in recent years pumping Yuletide content to streamers amid the pandemic.

The projects are modestly budgeted and shot efficiently and safely, mostly due to Afshar’s commandeering of his hometown — a sleepy Sonoma County village called Petaluma, where he built a soundstage from a converted barn and mines below-the-line crew from local residents. Titles include Netflix’s “A California Christmas” and its sequel “City Lights,” and the HBO Max originals “A Christmas Mystery,” “A Hollywood Christmas” and “Holiday Harmony.”

Afshar’s well-oiled Christmas machine functions at such a level that, during a recent conversation with Variety, he revealed he was in the middle of shooting another film — “A Wine Country Christmas.

‘Smart Guy’ Is More Than A Nostalgic Sitcom Rewatch
Image
When I think of the sitcoms that raised me, I don’t usually think of “Smart Guy,” and for that I am sorry.

“Smart Guy” often gets lost in the pantheon of sitcom lore, eclipsed by decades of long-running predecessors like “Full House,” “Fresh Prince,” and more. Created by Danny Kallis, the series stars Tahj Mowry as T.J. Henderson, a 10-year-old genius who skips from fourth to tenth grade and has to navigate high school with older kids — including his two siblings. It ran from 1997 to 1999 on the WB and aired reruns on the Disney Channel until 2003.

That’s when I and many other young millennials found the exceptional series. “Smart Guy” became the foundation of my sitcom education in tandem with “Boy Meets World,” a post-school package deal viewing (usually with my dad sharing the couch). In the years that followed, “Boy” moved to ABC Family, but “Smart Guy...
