He Went That Way Review: Quinto Outshines His Captor In Disastrous Crime Thriller
Image
About halfway through Jeffrey Darling’s crime thriller, He Went That Way, I had to consistently fight through the anger to remind myself that this genre-mashup is “just a movie.” At this point in the film, 19-year-old serial killer Bobby Falls had just made good on a promise and provided a kind gesture to his latest captive Jim Goodwin. It’s the kind of scene that felt emotionally manipulative; I felt some cheesy speech about how people could change was right around the corner. Thankfully, this never came to pass, but the film’s quality didn't get any better.

Zachary Quinto stars as the celebrity animal handler, Jim Goodwin, who travels across the country to Chicago with his precious cargo, the famous TV chimpanzee Spanky. During his journey, he picks up hitchhiker Bobby Falls (Jacob Elordi), who is on a mission to reunite with his girlfriend in Michigan to prove...

Image
Principal photography has wrapped on “He Went That Way,” the true crime thriller starring Jacob Elordi (“Euphoria”) and Zachary Quinto (Star Trek franchise).

Mister Smith Entertainment have revealed a first look image and will be showing the first footage to buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

Set in 1964, “He Went That Way” is based on the true crime story of celebrity animal trainer Dave Pitts and his famous TV chimp, Spanky, centerpiece of the traveling entertainment show The Ice Capades in the 1960s, and his fateful three-day encounter with the serial killer Larry Lee Ranes. The film is inspired by Conrad Hilberry’s book “Luke Karamazov” and the real life account from Dave Pitts, the sole survivor of Ranes killing spree, and follows the trio as they set off on a crazy three-day road trip down Route 66 together.

Elordi portrays serial killer Bobby Falls, based on Ranes and Quinto portrays Jim Goodwin,...

Image
The bidding for forthcoming road-trip thriller “He Went That Way,” which boasts an eye-catching lead duo of “Euphoria” star Jacob Elordi and Zachary Quinto, is already hotting up.

Variety has learned exclusively that the German distribution rights were snapped up by SquareOne Entertainment ahead of the Cannes virtual film market. Negotiations for other territories are under way, according to Mister Smith Entertainment, the outfit handling the hot title’s worldwide sales.

Set in 1964, the film represents the feature directorial debut of Australian commercial director Jeffrey Darling, and is based on the extraordinary true story of a road trip and strange bond between a serial-killer in the midst of a spree, an animal handler down on his luck, and Zippy the TV chimpanzee.

“As a stellar, award-winning commercials director and Dp, Darling’s unique eye for detail and nuance is keen, and his cinematography is inspired. We are proud to be...

Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
• Fresh off the news that Tom Cruise exited the long-gestating production of Man From U.N.C.L.E., it looks like Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) may take on the now-vacated starring role. The Guy Ritchie-directed Warner Bros. adaptation of the 1960s television show currently stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network) and Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina). Besides his potentially career-changing turn in Man of Steel, Cavill is also attached to the still-delayed production of The Great Wall. [Variety]

TV Review: Fox Buries ‘The Goodwin Games’ For Good Reason
Chicago – “The Goodwin Games” is bad, bad, bad. You know a show is likely to be awful when a network cuts back the order and buries its premiere in a time of year when most people are getting outside or going to see Summer blockbusters. While the networks are busy promoting Fall 2013 at Upfronts, who cares about a new show that won’t make it more than two months? And yet there is sometimes reason for hope that a network executive just missed the humor and is actually burying a hidden gem. Hope dies at “The Goodwin Games” and I wish they had buried it deeper.

Television Rating: 1.0/5.0

Not one laugh. A talented cast, decent direction, even a clever concept — but not one laugh. The attempts at jokes hit the floor, the character archetypes are broad, the emotional manipulation is unacceptable. Not one laugh. In fact, it’s stunning that...
