A3 Artists Agency Ex-Chairman Adam Bold Resolves Lawsuit Over Sale to Gersh
Image
A lawsuit over the sale of A3 Artists Agency to Gersh has been resolved.

Former agency partners Robert Atterman and Brian Cho, who accused majority owner Adam Bold of duping them into signing away their rights to stop the acquisition, moved on Wednesday to dismiss the case after a settlement was reached between the two sides in A3’s bankruptcy proceedings.

The 2023 lawsuit detailed chaos at A3 as it confronted an exodus of agents and their clients to competing firms amid alleged mismanagement of company funds, sexual misconduct and drug abuse by Bold. It sought to block the sale of the company’s most profitable divisions to Gersh, claiming that Bold sold the company well-below market value.

Two months after the complaint was filed, A3 closed its doors. According to a source at the time, the decision to pull the trigger on the sale was unilaterally made by Bold and...

4 Tos characters we hope to see on Strange New Worlds
Image
The recent teaser trailer for Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is not only exciting, but it also reminds us that Strange New Worlds is very much a prequel to the original Star Trek from 1966. With that comes a lot of overlap in characters between the two shows, with numerous Tos characters appearing in the main cast or as guest stars on Snw.

There are so many Tos characters across its 79 official episodes, however, that there is plenty of room to explore even more. While obvious untapped characters to feature might be the likes of Chekov, Sulu, or Dr. McCoy, it would be exciting to see some other characters from Tos appear. Perhaps some who have not received as much attention over the past 60 years.

Janice Rand

When Star Trek first started in 1966, Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) was initially presented as a fairly major character. Early advertisements for...

Satanic Panic Series “Hysteria!” Canceled By Peacock After One Season
Jerry O'Connell, Rebecca Romijn, Maya Perkins, Hayley Griffith, and Ruby Modine in Satanic Panic (2019)
Peacock continues its cancellation streak with its coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series “Hysteria!” after one season, Variety reports. The news arrives just weeks after the streamer canceled sci-fi horror series “Teacup“.

The series premiered in October 2024, and all eight episodes are now available to stream.

Written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville), “Hysteria!” highlights America’s dark history of mass hysteria through ’80s Satanic Panic. It’s framed through a teen coming-of-age story centered around a trio of high school misfits caught up in a wave of dangerous hysteria.

The series’ official synopsis: “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic ‘of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders,...

Bruce Campbell's Newest Horror Series Gets Canceled After 1 Season
Image
Revisiting the Satanic Panic craze is going to be a limited affair for Peacock, news that will surely disappoint many fans of Evil Dead icon Bruce Campbell.

Per Variety, Peacock has canceled Hysteria! after just one season. The series premiered on Peacock in October after it was ordered to series in 2022 with production happening in 2023. Notably, Hysteria! has high acclaim with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so the show getting canceled is clearly not due to a lack of quality. While viewership numbers for Hysteria! have not been revealed by the streaming platform, it's likely that the show didn't perform strongly enough on Peacock to warrant a renewal. The series never cracked Nielsen's weekly Top 10 streaming charts.

‘Hysteria!’ Canceled After One Season at Peacock (Exclusive)
Image
The Peacock horror thriller series “Hysteria!” has been canceled after just one season, Variety has learned exclusively.

The show aired its one and only season at the streamer in October 2024. It had originally been ordered to series in August 2022 and began production in 2023, but was forced to shut down after filming just a few episodes due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. It eventually resumed production in late 2023.

Peacock does not release viewership data for its shows, so it is difficult to gauge exactly how many people watched “Hysteria!” However, the show did not make an appearance on the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts upon its release. It was well-received by critics though, holding a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The official series description states:

Bruce Campbell Discusses His “Hysteria!” Character Arc and Reveals What He’d Like to See in Season 2
Image
Peacock’s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” plunged its small Michigan town into full-blown Satanic Panic. Thanks to its teen protagonists and an atypically sympathetic police chief, order is mostly restored in Happy Hollow by season’s end.

Chief Dandridge (Bruce Campbell) had a particularly stressful arc in showrunners Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman’s (The Orville) inaugural season; the observant yet patient small-town lawman nearly succumbed to the hysteria himself and rallied to survive a near-death confrontation with The Reverend (Garret Dillahunt). The finale wraps up the season’s overarching questions, yet leaves lingering signs that The Reverend and Tracy Whitehead’s (Anna Camp) devious machinations still have roots in Happy Hollow.

Considering that Campbell plays his cop character with unconventional kindness and is billed as a guest star, not series regular, where does that leave the actor regarding the future of the series?

“Well, I am under contract,...

This Is Transformational - Judith Light on Apple TV+s Before
Image
The specter of loss hangs heavily over the Apple TV+ original psychological horror series Before, created by Sarah Thorp, particularly over its driven protagonist. The show follows grieving child psychiatrist Eli (Billy Crystal), who is still mourning the death of his wife Lynn (Judith Light), though Lynn continues to appear to Eli as an apparition of his repressed feelings surrounding her illness and demise. And as Eli encounters a strange boy tormented by a paranormal mystery, Lynn's haunting presence continues to prominently take hold of Eli's life as he obsessively searches for his own absolution through the supernatural truth.

In an exclusive interview with Cbr, Before actor Judith Light reveals the complexities of playing a ghost haunting the series' protagonist, explains how she found the emotional foundation of her character and talks about working closely with Billy Crystal to form the visceral core of the Apple TV+ original series.

Interviews: Bruce Campbell, Anna Camp and more talk about their satanic panic series Hysteria!
Promo One Sheet
The last few years have probably felt familiar to many, with a constant blame game in the media attributing violence and crime to one thing or another. Those who lived through the 1980s likely remember the Satanic Panic that spread through the United States, where politicians blamed all sorts of things on kids and teenagers becoming obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. This panic was reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials, which in turn were like the Red Scare of the 1950s. Now, we get to look back at this crazy era through a modern lens, thanks to Hysteria!

Created by Matthew Scott Kane, Hysteria! looks at a small Michigan town in the 1980s where the disappearance of a popular high school student leads to theories of devil worship and supernatural influences in the community. While some parents begin to experience strange phenomena, a trio of teens decide...

Hysteria! Show Producers Think 'The Satanic Panic Has Never Really Left'
Image
Peacock's Hysteria! explores real-life fears alongside supernatural terrors, leaving audiences guessing what is and isn't real. But that was the goal of creator and showrunner Matthew Scott Kane and producer David A. Goodman, who melded their talents to develop a TV show which is equal parts nostalgic and modern. What happens in this small town will appeal to horror fans both old and new.

Cbr sat down with Kane and Goodman to explore if they had any personal experiences with the Satanic Panic that helped form the idea for Hysteria! and how they feel it never really left. The producers discuss the many influences that helped make Hysteria! feel familiar, even though the show has a unique idea that hasn't been seen before. How did they break new ground utilizing infamous history?

Cbr: Hysteria! takes place during a very specific time in history, when the unknown ruled the masses and created fear.

‘Hysteria!’ Review: Peacock’s Satanic Panic Mashup Is a Halloween Treat
Image
What marks the devil? Is it a hulking figure with burnt skin and massive horns? Is it a personal enemy or unseen force? What is hell, if not a high school hallway, haunted by inner and outer demons that can only be escaped when you walk out the door?

It might be all of that, as it is in Peacock’s “Hysteria!” created by Matthew Scott Kane. In the 1980s bliss of suburban Michigan, a the high school quarterback has disappeared, a bloody pentagram left in his wake. Dylan Campbell (Emjay Anthony) gets mistaken for a Satanist by the popular Judith (Jessica Treska) because he plays in a heavy metal band with friends, so they pose as Satanists to become popular. But as fear of the occult grips the town of Happy Hollow, the innocent teens become prime suspects, and a powerful force takes root that threatens everyone.

Video Interview: Bruce Campbell Talks 80s Satanic Panic and His New Role in Hysteria!
Image
Just in time for a Halloween binge, Hysteria! is now available on Peacock and, having seen most of the series already, I can definitely say that it's worth your time. An 80s-set horror story that doesn't feel like it's focused on nostalgia, Hysteria! has a great cast with great chemistry, and it really does a great job of building up its characters, including its supporting cast, which features Bruce Campbell as the chief of police in a town where satanic panic takes hold. During a recent press day, I caught up with Bruce Campbell, where we talked about his new role and his experience with satanic panic in the 1980s.

Hysteria! Review: Bruce Campbell leads the rocking ’80s horror TV series
Image
Plot: When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

Review: There have been many 1980s-set retro horror movies in recent years, ranging from My Best Friend’s Exorcism to Totally Killer and more. The 80s were a bastion of paranoia about the impact of Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal, a thread used in Netflix’s Stranger Things. The new series Hysteria! goes back to the heart of the Satanic Panic to see how one small town in Michigan deals with its own devilish challenges. Stars of Peacock’s “Hysteria!” Discuss Satanic Panic Origins and Forming a Heavy Metal Band [Interview]
Image
Anna Camp’s devout Christian Tracy Whitehead is at the frontlines of stirring up a Satanic Panic frenzy in Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller “Hysteria!” Her central targets? High school outcasts and close friends Dylan Campbell (Emjay Anthony), Jordy (Chiara Aurelia), and Spud (Kezii Curtis).

That the trio is part of a heavy metal band draws Tracy’s ire, setting the stage for paranoia, mistrust, and occult madness when they decide to lean into their Satanic reputation. That backfires when a series of bizarre kidnappings, murders, and supernatural events trace back to the friends. That Tracy has domestic woes with her own daughter, Faith (Nikki Hahn), will only further complicate the growing division between teens and grownups alike in the small Michigan town plagued by, well, hysteria.

Hysteria!'s Kane & Goodman On Balancing Horror With Comedy & Collaborating With High-Profile Producers
Image
Matthew Scott Kane and David A. Goodman are taking audiences back to the Satanic Panic for a hilarious and twisty ride with Hysteria!. The TV show serves as Kane's biggest project to date as a writer, having primarily worked as a production assistant on everything from American Horror Story to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while having also penned one episode of the ABC Family sci-fi crime drama Stitchers. Goodman, on the other hand, has six Emmy nominations under his belt for his work on Futurama and Family Guy, while also having worked on Seth MacFarlane's The Orville.

Created by Kane and showrun by him and Goodman, Hysteria! is set in a fictional small Michigan town in the '80s that is rocked by the disappearance of a local varsity quarterback, which seemingly points to a potential Satanic cult in the area. As the investigation continues, a trio...

“Hysteria!” – Bruce Campbell Explains What Drew Him to Peacock’s New Horror Series [Interview]
Image
Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” is set to tackle the era of Satanic Panic, with heavy metal and actual Satanism sowing generational division in a small conservative town in Michigan. And what’s Michigan horror without actor Bruce Campbell?

The actor guest stars as Chief Dandridge in the series, set to premiere all episodes on Friday, October 18, 2024.

“Hysteria!” follows a group of 1980s high school misfits as they exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity, written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). Caught in the middle of the mounting tension between adults and teens is Campbell’s police chief.

Unlike his most iconic character, Ash Williams, Chief Dandridge prefers logic and science. Though he isn’t your typical small-town police chief. That’s because he treats the teens with respect and compassion, a far cry from the typical parents in suburban set ’80s horror.

Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis are three friends whose efforts to break free from being outcasts leads to them becoming the targets of their small town in Hysteria!. Curtis, on the other hand, is better known for his young-demographic-skewing fare, most recently including the Owen Wilson-starring Secret Headquarters.

Star Trek writer says The Next Generation pales in comparison to The Original Series
Image
David A. Goodman wrote The Autobiography of James T. Kirk (2015), The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard (2017), and The Autobiography of Mr. Spock (2020). He has been been a dedicated fan of Star Trek, having also written for Star Trek: Enterprise, and he was responsible for bringing Seth MacFarlane aboard the Enterprise for a brief role. [via Trekmovie] It's safe to say that there isn't much he doesn't love about Star Trek, and his love hearkens back to The Original Series because of its originality.

The Fifty-Year Mission The First Twenty-Five Years by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross included a quote from Goodman who spoke about how Star Trek stands the test of time essentially. And, though a big fan of The Next Generation, Goodman had some strong thoughts about the differences in the series.

In a certain way, Next Generation, as big a fan as I am of it, pales in comparison to the original series,...

The Orville: Halston Sage's Exit Explained
Image
Many fans of Seth MacFarlane's hit sci-fi parody still wonder why Halston Sage left The Orville. Halston Sages Orville crewmember Lieutenant Alara Orville's chief of security was responsible for the safety of the starship's crew, starting out inexperienced but evolving into a more than capable lieutenant throughout the first season. Alara Kitan also possessed superhuman strength, which was a product of her home planet of Xelaya having a high gravitational pull. This proved against nefarious aliens like Dorahlian zealot Hamelac (Robert Knepper) or Krill spy Derek Ashton (Sean Cook). Unfortunately, it was Alaras unique Xelayan super-strength that led to her departure from the USS Orville crew.

In The Orville's season 2 episode Home, Alara discovered she was gradually becoming weaker as her body adjusted to lower gravity, which required her to return to Xelaya to re-acclimatize and regain her strength. Alara then reconnected with her family who had previously...

A Beloved Nicktoon Is Getting A Live-Action Movie And There's No Way This Isn't Nightmare Fuel
Image
One of Nickelodeon's most beloved shows is coming back to life as a movie, but it sounds like it's going to be a recipe for straight-up nightmare fuel. While it's best not to judge something until we see it, this one is tough to swallow. A live-action/CGI hybrid "Rugrats" movie is currently in the works, according to Deadline. Full details have not been made available, but that alone is enough to raise a great many eyebrows.

According to the report, Jason Moore is on board to direct the film. Since Nickelodeon is owned by Paramount, presumably that studio will distribute the movie. Then again, there's always the possibility this could go to Netflix or directly to Paramount+. Mikey Day, of "Saturday Night Live" fame, co-wrote the film alongside his "SNL" writing partner Streeter Seidell. This project has actually been kicking around for some time, with a "Rugrats" live-action...

The “Happy Gilmore” actress leads upcoming Peacock series “Hysteria!,” which is set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s. In the trailer, Bowen is shown as a ’80s housewife who is rocking out with her Walkman…until her microwave seems to become possessed by a “Ghostbusters”-esque demon.

Why Is This Beat-Up Guitar Worth $6 Million?
Image
Just After Dawn on the morning of May 15, 2019, more than a dozen cops arrived at a home in the placid suburb of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. Armed with a search warrant, they ordered a member of the household to sit down and denied her access to her cellphone. Similar searches took place at other properties in Woodstock, New York, and Brooklyn. When it was over, according to court documents, the police left with cellphones, Usb drives, iPads, 1,300 pages of “physical documents,” four Apple MacBooks, and files filled with banking records.

John Lennon’s Long-Lost Guitar Fetches Record $2.85M at Times Square Auction
Image
The Beatles continue to break records long after their musical reign across the world.

A long-lost John Lennon guitar has sold for more than $2.85 million at auction at Times Square’s Hard Rock Cafe where collectors, fans and industry aficionados had gathered from around the globe to witness the event.

Lennon’s 1964 Framus “Help!” Hootenanny acoustic guitar was also used by George Harrison during the recording sessions for the 1965 Beatles album Rubber Soul.

It had been discovered — after not being seen or played for over 50 years — at the end of 1965. Lennon gifted the guitar to Gordon Waller of Peter and Gordon, for whom he and Paul McCartney had been writing songs. But Waller later passed the guitar onto a manager of his who took it home and left it in the attic.

The new owners of the British countryside home found it while moving in and expected it to sell...

John Lennon’s ‘Help!’ Guitar Sells for Nearly $2.9 Million at Recording-Breaking Auction
Image
A guitar used by John Lennon has sold for $2,857,500, setting a new record for the highest-selling guitar at auction in the Beatles’ history.

The Framus 12-string Hootenanny acoustic guitar, used in the recording of the Beatles’ 1965 Help! album and film, was bought through a telephone bid as part of a two-day music icons sale by Julien’s Auctions. The guitar had an estimated price of $600,000 to $800,000, but was expected to fetch far more. It surpassed the $2.4 million price tag of Lennon’s Gibson J160E, which sold in 2015.

Hollywood Contraction: How Writers Are Reacting To Ongoing Industrywide Cost-Cutting
Image
Life in post-strike Hollywood was definitely a topic of conversation at Sunday’s Writers Guild Awards, with former WGA West president David Goodman saying “the strike is over, the fight goes on” while adding “as individuals we’re replaceable.”

That sentiment has never been more applicable than now, as the ongoing contraction in Hollywood continues to impact how many writers remain out of work since walking off the picket line in September.

In March, Deadline kicked off a Hollywood Contraction series by checking in with the above and below-the-line communities to see whether opportunities have picked up since the end of the strikes.

The response hasn’t been positive. Because of fewer shows in the works and the disappearance of pilot season, the availability of gigs are now few and far between — with many considering a life outside of Hollywood.

Before Sunday’s WGA Awards celebration on both coasts, we...

Writers Guild Spoofs Studios’ Top Labor Negotiator at Awards Ceremony: “See You on the Picket Line in 2026”
Image
The Writers Guild of America resurfaced its 2023 strike in a comedy bit that unfurled at the union’s Los Angeles awards ceremony Sunday night.

More than half a year after the union ended its 148-day strike, the union spoofed the top negotiator representing studios and streamers during those talks, Carol Lombardini, in a raunchy and at times brutal routine at the Hollywood Palladium. Nearly an hour into the union’s annual awards ceremony and between awards presentations, host Niecy Nash-Betts began interacting with an image of “Lombardini” on a screen behind her. (Only the mouth of the image moved, and the rest was static.)

When Nash-Betts asked why “Lombardini” was there, the image responded by congratulating the co-chairs of the WGA’s negotiating committee during the 2023 strike, David Goodman and Chris Keyser, for winning the Morgan Cox Award for service to the union. “First of all, I want to congratulate all the nominees and winners,...

Writers Guild Awards: ‘The Holdovers’, ‘American Fiction’, ‘The Bear’, ‘Succession’ & ‘Beef’ Among Winners – Full List
Image
The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.

Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.

The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.

Later, the Documentary prize went to Errol Morris...

“As A Union We’re Irreplaceable”: WGA Awards Full Of Strike Talk As Guild Takes Victory Lap
Image
The writers strike ended seven months ago, but memories of the picket lines were fresh at the WGA Awards tonight.

“The strike is over, the fight goes on,” said former Wgaw President David Goodman at the Hollywood Palladium. “As individuals we’re replaceable, but as a union we’re irreplaceable.”

As the guild gave out awards to scribes, speaker after speaker brought up the 148-day WGA strike as well as the SAG-AFTRA strike.

From Wgaw President Meredith Stiehm to Hollywood Teamster Chief Lindsay Dougherty to Goodman and fellow Morgan Cox honoree Chris Keyser and even Drew Carey, the strike was a constant topic.

WGA Strike Leaders Chris Keyser and David Goodman Warn Members to Stay Vigilant: ‘The Strike is Over, the Fight Goes On’
Image
Chris Keyser and David Goodman, the veteran showrunners who steered the five-month Writers Guild of America strike last year, warned guild members on Sunday to stay vigilant in a fast-changing business landscape despite the gains of last year’s historic labor action.

“Though this strike is over, the fight goes on. If we take our eye off the ball, everything we gained can literally go away tomorrow,” Goodman told the crowd at the Writers Guild Awards at the Hollywood Palladium.

Goodman and Keyser served as co-chairs of the WGA’s negotiating commttee last year. The pair, both past presidents of the WGA West, were honored with the guild’s Morgan Cox Awards for dedicated service.

“Nothing is given to labor that it does not demand,” Keyser told the crowd.

Keyser said the long struggle of last year was the end result of a long period of getting the union to...

‘Succession,’ ‘The Bear,’ ‘American Fiction’ and ‘The Holdovers’ Top WGA Awards (Full Winners List)
Image
‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.

This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.

The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.

Big winners on the film side included “American Fiction” writer Cord Jefferson,...

Top Chef in Star Trek? Padma Lakshmi’s Enterprise Role Explained

Top Chef's Padma Lakshmi had a forgettable role in Star Trek: Enterprise, labeled one of the worst episodes ever. Lakshmi's career skyrocketed post-Star Trek with Top Chef, books, and Hulu show exploring immigrant culture through food. Padma Lakshmi's activism and achievements as a writer and presenter far overshadow her appearance in the poorly received Star Trek episode.

Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi had a forgotten role in an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise that was later deemed one of the worst hours of Star Trek ever. Padma Lakshmi is best known as a producer, television presenter, food expert, author, and former model, but she's also had several acting roles. Lakshmi starred as Sylk in the notorious Mariah Carey movie Glitter and also played Madhuvanthi in Sean Bean's historical epic Sharpe.
