Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s MCU Cameo Record Remains Unbroken to This Day
Image
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the longest-running Marvel TV show that aired from 2013 to 2020. Before the Disney+ era’s arrival, the ABC show, centered around a spy agency in the superhero world, was a major player in Marvel’s TV department.

Although Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s continuity in the MCU is still subject to debate, the show featured a long list of cameos from the movies. Starting from Nick Fury to Lady Sif, many minor and major MCU movie characters could be spotted in the show. The list is so huge that even the recent Marvel movies and TV shows have not been able to break it yet.

No other show can match the cameo list of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Phil Coulson and Nick Fury in Agents of Shield | Credits: Marvel Studios

When Agents of Shield was first made by Marvel and ABC, it was conceived as a spin-off show to the MCU movies,...

The Regime's Foundling Twist Explained (Is The Three Brothers Myth Based On A True Story?)
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for The Regime episode 2 "The Foundling" below!

The Regime episode 2 explores Herbert's dark past, while the cabinet falsely claims he is a descendant of the nation's founder. The Regime pulls from the actual Three Brothers myth to explain "The Foundling" origin story. Elena also claims to be descended from the King of the Franks, Charlemagne.

The Regime episode 2 closes with the "Foundling" twist, but is the Three Brothers' story cited based on historical fact? The Regime casts Kate Winslet and Matthias Schoenaerts as Chancellor Elena Vernham and disgraced soldier Herbert Zubak respectively. Despite taking part in a shooting that left 12 protestors dead, The Chancellor has deemed Herbert worthy of redemption. Not only that, by the end of The Regime episode 1, Herbert has become Elena's closest advisor.

The second episode shows how much their bond has grown too, with Elena taking Herbert's advice on everything from home remedies to international relations.

‘The Regime’ Team on How the Kate Winslet Series Portrays the “Danger of Power”
Image
The cast and crew of The Regime descended upon the Museum of Natural History in New York City on Monday to celebrate the premiere of their new HBO project.

The political satire series follows Kate Winslet’s Chancellor Elena Vernham as she becomes increasingly paranoid and unstable, turning to volatile soldier Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts) as her unlikely confidant.

Will Tracy, who worked as a writer on Succession, serves as the showrunner for The Regime and explained his elevator pitch for the series was “Downton Abbey but in an autocrat’s palace instead of an English manor house.”

“It’s an imaginary country, but it hopefully feels as though it’s taking place within a geopolitical reality that we would recognize, and that it says something about how foreign policy works and how these regimes thrive and operate,” Tracy told The Hollywood Reporter of the tone. “At the same time,...

The Regime Trailer: Kate Winslet Is An Oblivious & Violent Dictator
Image
Kate Winslet plays a violent and oblivious dictator in the trailer for The Regime, an upcoming HBO satire series. When she last headlined a series for the prestige cable channel, Winslet garnered waves of praise for helping to reinvigorate the tropes of the small town murder-mystery with Mare of Easttown, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her lead performance as a local detective who can barely manage the competing strains of her professional and personal life.

The Oscar winner now takes on a very different kind of starring role, as seen in the trailer for The Regime, which was formerly known by its working title The Palace.

In the trailer, which was unveiled at the presentation of the rebranded Max streaming service, Winslet's character takes center stage. At one point, she asks that her people need to be respected, and in response, she's told that she needs to demonstrate credibility.

‘The Regime’: HBO Teases Kate Winslet-Led Limited Series
Image
HBO and Kate Winslet’s fruitful creative relationship will continue with The Regime, a limited series set to premiere in 2024. The premium cabler released a teaser for the series Wednesday at a Warner Bros. Discovery press event.

Formerly titled The Palace, the series from Succession writer and executive producer Will Tracy tells the story of a year inside the palace of a “modern European regime” as it starts to unravel. (That description is a slight tweak from an earlier logline that called the government in question “an authoritarian regime.”)

The teaser mostly focuses on a meeting between Winslet’s chancellor and a U.S. emissary played by Martha Plimpton. “We need you to demonstrate credibility to us — trustworthiness,” Plimpton’s character says.

“All we are doing is realizing our dream — our dream of a new Europe, without limits, without cruelty. There are times when one must choose the hardest road.

Kate Winslet Strives to Craft a ‘New Europe’ as Madame Chancellor in HBO’s ‘The Regime’ (Video)
Kate Winslet in The Orange British Academy Film Awards: Red Carpet (2010)
Kate Winslet is striving for more than just world peace as she sets her mind on crafting a “new Europe” as Madame Chancellor in HBO’s new political drama “The Regime.”

The official teaser, which was revealed during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service Wednesday, showcases a tense confrontation between Winslet and an American diplomat (Martha Plimpton) who attempts to convince the chancellor the U.S. would like to help “enhance” Winslet’s authority in the region — a goal that was, evidently, not pressing enough that the President could attend the meeting.

“All we are doing is realizing our dream, our dream of a new Europe, without limits, without cruelty,” the chancellor says as she engages in, shall we say, less dignified actions to get her point across, including punching an unknown victim. “There are times when one must choose the hardest road; I have chosen...

Things are not always as they appear. In Mexican writer/director Michel Franco’s Sundown, Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg play members of a family on vacation in Acapulco, Mexico, in a suspenseful drama where things are not always what they seem.

While the Bennett family – Neil (Tim Roth), Alice (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and teens Alexa (Albertine Kotting McMillan) and Colin (Samuel Bottomley) – vacations at a posh beach side resort, their pleasant holiday is interrupted by a family emergency back home in London. Alice is distraught at the news, while Neil’s reaction is muted. At the airport, Neil tells the family he forgot his passport back at the hotel. But rather than delaying everyone, he says he will go to back to retrieve it and then catch the next flight, while the rest of the family...

‘GameStop: Rise Of The Players’ Brings The Meme Stock Era To Theaters – Specialty Preview
Image
GameStop: Rise of the Players, Adrien Brody passion project Clean, Cannes winner Compartment No. 9, Danish upscale restaurant drama A Taste of Hunger, Michel Franco’s Sundown and Woody Allen’s latest Rifkin’s Festival hit theatres crowded by Oscar contenders in a specialty market consumed by awards season (and as a major storm looks set to pummel the Northeast).

There’s more new content than the market has seen in many weeks, although these can be hard frames for indie distributors to find available screens. But it’s easier now than it will be after Feb. 8 and a crush of actual Oscar nominees, said one distribution executive. “We’re going in,...

Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989)
Tim Roth Stays in Mexico in Michel Franco's 'Sundown' Official Trailer
Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989)
"You left me with all of our problems." Bleecker Street has debuted the official US trailer for Sundown, the latest one-of-a-kind film made by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco. This premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival last year, where it earn some rave reviews along with some negative reviews. But that's expected for a divisive film like this. Described as a "suspenseful jolt from writer/director Michel Franco," the film is about a wealthy man who inexplicably decides to stay in Mexico after his family leaves. He drifts around in scenes without any dialogue, mostly sitting on the beach emotionless. Tim Roth stars, with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Iazua Larios, Henry Goodman, Albertine Kotting McMillan, and Samuel Bottomley. I wrote a glowing review of this from Venice, because I was really shook by the film - there's something peculiar and fascinating about it, underneath all the layers, showing someone dealing with the arresting guilt of wealth.

‘Sundown’ Trailer: Tim Roth Beach-Bums It in Michel Franco’s New Oddity
Image
The director of after-school special turned social horror movie “After Lucia” and harrowing class-uprising thriller “New Order” takes on a more relaxed vibe for his latest film, “Sundown.” That doesn’t make the new film from Mexican filmmaker Michael Franco any less bewildering in its story of a man who abandons his life to live beachside in Acapulco. If anything, “Sundown” is even more opaque than the director’s recent efforts. Watch the first trailer for the film below.

The film also stars a potent Charlotte Gainsbourg, Iazua Larios, Henry Goodman, Albertine Kotting McMillan, and Samuel Bottomley.

Here’s the official synopsis: “Neil and Alice Bennett are the core of a wealthy family on vacation in Mexico with younger members Colin and Alexa until a distant emergency cuts their trip short. When one relative disrupts the family’s tight-knit order, simmering tensions rise to the fore in this suspenseful jolt from writer/director Michel Franco.

Bleecker Street Buys Family Drama ‘Sundown’ Starring Tim Roth, Set to Release in 2022
Image
Bleecker Street has landed North American rights to “Sundown,” a suspenseful drama about family and privilege.

Filmmaker Michel Franco (” After Lucia”) wrote and directed the movie, which will be released in theaters sometime in 2022.

“Sundown” — starring Tim Roth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Iazua Larios and Henry Goodman — follows a wealthy British family on a vacation abruptly cut short in Acapulco. When one relative disrupts the family’s tight-knit order, simmering tensions threaten to expose long-gestating rifts.

It premiered at Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival to solid reviews. Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge praised “Sundown,” calling it the “high-minded director’s most successful film to date.”

“‘Sundown’ is an intricate, unconventional puzzle — a mystery, complete with murder, in which the solution isn’t nearly so important as the process of putting it all together,” Debruge wrote in his review.

Franco says he hopes the movie sparks a dialogue.

‘The Good Traitor’ Review: Wartime Intrigue Spices Up Otherwise Dull Marital Drama
Image
Fascinating backroom politics circa WWII are undermined by banal marital melodrama in Danish director Christina Rosendahl’s “The Good Traitor,” resulting in a so-so period drama that raises more questions than it answers. The film centers on the life of diplomat-gone-rogue Henrik Kauffmann, who was posted to Washington, D.C., as Danish Ambassador in 1939. When the Nazis occupy Denmark on April 9, 1940, Kauffmann declares himself the only true representative of the free Danish people and goes on to make a number of high-risk autonomous decisions that, in the long run, help to free his homeland. Unfortunately, the details of Kauffmann’s wheeling and dealing are continually undercut by the film’s concentration on his rather unusual personal life, rendered here in trite narrative clichés.

During a long and distinguished foreign service career, Kauffmann enabled the U.S. to install strategic military bases on Greenland (an autonomous territory of Denmark) during WWII.

Samuel Goldwyn Acquires U.S. Rights to ‘The Good Traitor,’ ‘The Day We Died’ From REinvent (Exclusive)
Image
Samuel Goldwyn has acquired U.S. rights to Christina Rosendahl’s World War II-set drama “The Good Traitor” and Ole Christian Madsen’s Danish terrorist drama “The Day We Died” (“Powder Keg”) from REinvent.

Based on true events, “The Day We Died” is headlined by “Game Of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The film follows the journey of four people connected to the February 2015 terrorist attacks in Copenhagen: a newly released criminal, a filmmaker, a Jewish watchman and a police officer. Only one of them will be left alive. Coster-Waldau stars opposite Lars Brygmann, Albert Arthur Amiryan and Adam Buschard. Creative Alliance produced the film.

“The Good Traitor” is based on the true story of Denmark’s ambassador to the U.S., Henrik Kauffmann. An unsung hero, Kauffmann was the Danish ambassador to Washington in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II and declared himself to be the only true representative...

‘The New Pope’ First Trailer: John Malkovich Joins Jude Law in HBO’s Beachside Papal Roller-Coaster
Let’s face it. You’ve done a lot of things your life. Accomplishments, achievements. Hopes, dreams.

But have you ever convinced HBO and Sky to fund a day of shooting where Jude Law walks on a beach underneath a tunnel of women bumping volleyballs over his head? Paolo Sorrentino sure has. And so begins the long meme-ified journey to the release of “The New Pope.”

The awaited follow-up to “The Young Pope,” the unclassifiable limited series that first made its debut in the fall of 2016, “The New Pope” looks set to bring its pontiff-related antics to new heights. Sure, Lenny Belardo (Law) isn’t emerging from a giant mound of babies. But it does have slo-mo beach activities set to an instrumental cover of “All Along the Watchtower,” so that seems like something.

As with its predecessor, “The New Pope” will make its debut in Venice next month. Sorrentino...
