After spending years in development limbo, Distant — now retitled Long Distance — is a success on Hulu! Starring Anthony Ramos(In the Heights)and Naomi Scott(Aladdin),the sci-fi thriller currently sits at No. 5 on Hulu’s U.S. Top 10 list. Despite a slow start, the film has gradually made its way up the charts. Long Distance peaked at No. 2 on July 17, 2025, two weeks after its July 3, 2025, release. The sleeper hit was filmed in 2020 and was slated for a release in 2022 through Universal Pictures. However, several delays led to the film finding its home on the streaming service.

According to FlixPatrol, Long Distance has beaten titles such as Wrath of Man (2021) and The Equalizer 3. As of July 21, 2025, though, it sits behind High Rollers(2025), In the Lost Lands (2025),The Assessment (2024), and The Amateur (2025).Despite that, audience reactions to the film have been mixed. Long Distance currently holds a 47% Popcornmeter Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Per Flix Patrol, 2024's Long Distance (also known as Distant) starring Anthony Ramos and Naomi Scott has officially reached the number three spot on the streaming chart for the top films on Hulu. As of the time of writing, Long Distance sits just behind In the Lost Lands and The Amateur in second and first place, respectively, while standing just above the recently released stand-up comedy special from Zarna Garg, Practical People Win.

Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck from a screenplay by Spenser Cohen, Long Distancestart Anthony Ramos as Andy Ramirez, an asteroid miner who crash lands on an alien planet. Quickly losing oxygen and unable to fully rely upon his suit's artificial intelligence, L.E.O.N.A.R.D., voiced by Zachary Quinto, Andy seems fated to a slow and lonely end in the far reaches of space.

Josh Gordon and Will Speck’s Distant (2024) joins the ranks of schlocky outer-space dramas that are as generic, predictable, trope-y as it gets. Random creatures are mounted as assailants. They are predators and that throughline is taken to supply the narrative with blasts of action and heightened chase sequences. The drama is dialled up, moments of stillness and companionship are shattered by the invasion of massive threats. Surprise at the threat is followed by attempts to outdo the stalking monster. Life, endangered as it is, becomes doubly imperilled. Escape is evasive. Hope seems forsaken, yet the two characters persist.

The lesson here is solidarity and allyship, a chance connection that rips out peril. Hope shines brighter in this companionship, despite physical separateness. The emotional need for anchorage trumps obstacles, looming danger. Backstories peep out in scattered mini-flashbacks. Trauma and loss are entrenched deep. Nevertheless, people fight back, latching onto whatever is available.

Movies based on video games haven’t had the best track record, lest we forget the Street Fighter disaster of 1994. But that may be changing.

The recent Chris Pratt Insults Italian-Americans (aka The Super Mario Bros. Movie) made over a billion dollars at the global box office. And the HBO series The Last of Us, proved that video games could inspire critically-acclaimed dramatic works that in no way involve talking hedgehogs or raiding tombs.

So it’s no surprise that there are more video game movies coming down the pike. There’s a Legend of Zelda project in the works, and before that, we’ll be getting the vomitous CGI onslaught known as Minecraft. At least Jason Momoa’s stylist seemed to be having fun.

Hit-Monkey creators want the show to exist separately from the MCU to maintain its own unique universe and vibe. Despite being distinct, there is potential for Hit-Monkey to cameo in future MCU projects due to the multiverse concept. Hit-Monkey could fit well in the McU's Multiverse Saga, possibly in Avengers: Secret Wars or a new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

In the second season of the animated series, Leslie Jones (Ghostbusters: Answer the Call) will be voicing Eunice. Hulu describes the character as "sarcastic, foul-mouthed, and tough as nails," adding that "Eunice is the best assassins agent in New York City. But with her favorite client Bryce (Jason Sudeikis) dead and buried, she turns her attention to representing Hit-Monkey." Cristin Milioti is lending her voice to Season 2 of the Hulu adult animated series “Hit-Monkey,” Variety has learned exclusively.

As previously reported, Season 2 will see Monkey (Fred Tatasciore) and the ghost of American assassin Bryce (Jason Sudeikis) travel from Japan to New York. It is due to premiere on Hulu in July 15.

Milioti will star as Iris. Her official character description states, “Iris has grown up vowing never to be like the father, Bryce, who abandoned her, but when fate brings them back together, she realizes that she and her old man are cut from the same cloth as they hurtle towards a final reconciliation.”

Exclusive: Following a bidding war, TriStar Pictures has beaten out a number of suitors and pre-emptively acquired rights to Alison Espach’s forthcoming novel The Wedding People. Will Speck and Josh Gordon, who have a first-look deal with Sony Pictures, are set to direct, with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicole Holofcener writing.

Exclusive: Netflix has landed the comedy The Chaperone, to be directed and produced by Will Speck and Josh Gordon as a potential star vehicle for Jason Bateman.

Pic will be produced by Bateman and Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films, with Af’s Amanda Anka also producing. Gordon & Speck will also produce through their Speck Gordon Inc. banner.

Cocaine Bear’s Jimmy Warden will write the screenplay, and they are keeping plot specifics under wraps.

This marks the third collaboration between Bateman and Speck & Gordon, after they teamed on The Switch and Office Christmas Party.

Aggregate’s Drew Brennan and Speck Gordon’s Eric Fineman will shepherd the pic.

Bateman most recently co-starred in the Ben Affleck-directed Air, and Aggregate produced the Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man, which became the big acquisition of the Toronto Film Festival when Netflix acquired it in a $20 million deal.

Bateman and Speck & Gordon are repped by CAA.

Amblin will continue to produce other movies with rival studios, such as “West Side Story” at 20th Century or “Ready Player One” at Warner Bros., but Universal will have first-look status on all of Amblin’s theatrical projects.

American musical comedy film “Lyle Lyle Crocodile,” is set to release in mainland China cinemas, having received approvals for import and distribution from Chinese authorities. It will play in China from April 15, 2023.

The film was released in North America in early October last year and many other territories at the end of 2022. Parts of Asia have been later to receive the title with Korea and Taiwan play it from January and Japan set to open it from March 24.

The film has grossed $108 million worldwide, with $60.9 million of that coming from international markets and $46.8 million from the North American domestic market, studio backer Sony Pictures reported.

The film which mixes animation and live action is based on a best-selling book series by Bernard Waber.
