Long Distance Review: Surviving Space and Corporate Indifference
Image
The new science fiction film Long Distance opens not with a bang, but with the silent, cold hum of deep space. Inside the starship Borealis, asteroid miner Andy is in a long cryogenic sleep, dreaming of a life four years and countless lightyears away.

This peace is shattered when the ship careens through an unexpected asteroid field. The sequence is a jolt of visceral filmmaking; alarms blare, metal groans, and Andy is violently awakened just in time to be ejected in an escape pod. He crash-lands on the surface of a desolate, unknown planet. The immediate challenges are stark and severe.

He is utterly alone, his suit is leaking precious air, and his oxygen supply is a rapidly draining clock. Hope arrives as a faint signal in his helmet: another survivor, Naomi, is alive but trapped miles away. With the planet’s hostile creatures stirring in the shadows, Andy’s...

If You Loved Happy Gilmore 2, You’ll Adore These 5 Comedy Films
Image
28 years after the release of Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler is back with his sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Set 29 years after Happy Gilmore won his first Tour Championship, he now returns to play golf for his daughter’s ballet school.

Just like the first film, the sequel is full of Sandler’s blend of potty‑mouth wit, underdog grit, and heartfelt redemption. The sequel brings back the beloved golf icon nearly three decades after the original, with nostalgic callbacks, the classic soundtrack, and a plot that finds Happy mentoring the next generation while still throwing fastballs (or golf tees) at anyone who gets in his way.

Reuniting Sandler with several of the original stars like Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Blake Clark, and Christopher McDonald, the film also stars several fresh faces like Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler. A sports comedy drama that would reignite your love for absurd premises,...

This 'Smile 2' Star’s, 32, Sci-Fi Survival Flick Quietly Becomes a Sleeper Hit in America
Image
After spending years in development limbo, Distant — now retitled Long Distance — is a success on Hulu! Starring Anthony Ramos(In the Heights)and Naomi Scott(Aladdin),the sci-fi thriller currently sits at No. 5 on Hulu’s U.S. Top 10 list. Despite a slow start, the film has gradually made its way up the charts. Long Distance peaked at No. 2 on July 17, 2025, two weeks after its July 3, 2025, release. The sleeper hit was filmed in 2020 and was slated for a release in 2022 through Universal Pictures. However, several delays led to the film finding its home on the streaming service.

According to FlixPatrol, Long Distance has beaten titles such as Wrath of Man (2021) and The Equalizer 3. As of July 21, 2025, though, it sits behind High Rollers(2025), In the Lost Lands (2025),The Assessment (2024), and The Amateur (2025).Despite that, audience reactions to the film have been mixed. Long Distance currently holds a 47% Popcornmeter Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sci-Fi Thriller That Took 5 Years To Release Is Now A Hit On Streaming
Image
A sci-fi thriller has now become a success on streaming after a long road to actually releasing. From small budgets to big-budget blockbuster fare, sci-fi remains a dependable genre with wide audience appeal. The genre often transports viewers to an alternate version of reality, showing advanced technology or possible futures.

Sci-fi movies have been a staple of the theatrical space for decades. From early cult classics like Blade Runner (1982) to Christopher Nolan's acclaimed and beloved Interstellar (2014), these movies are often built for the big screen.

In today's streaming-dominant era, however, audiences are also likely to see some sci-fi flicks go straight to streaming. The Gorge (2025), for example, was released directly onto Apple TV+ in February and The Electric State (2025) hit Netflix in March.

A direct-to-streaming release can sometimes make a movie feel like less of a cultural event, but that certainly doesn't mean it can't reach viewers. Often, sci-fi...

Long-Delayed Sci-Fi Film That's Destined to Become a Cult Classic Is Crushing the Global Streaming Charts
Image
An underrated 2024 sci-fi film is about to take over the streaming charts.

Per Flix Patrol, 2024's Long Distance (also known as Distant) starring Anthony Ramos and Naomi Scott has officially reached the number three spot on the streaming chart for the top films on Hulu. As of the time of writing, Long Distance sits just behind In the Lost Lands and The Amateur in second and first place, respectively, while standing just above the recently released stand-up comedy special from Zarna Garg, Practical People Win.

Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck from a screenplay by Spenser Cohen, Long Distancestart Anthony Ramos as Andy Ramirez, an asteroid miner who crash lands on an alien planet. Quickly losing oxygen and unable to fully rely upon his suit's artificial intelligence, L.E.O.N.A.R.D., voiced by Zachary Quinto, Andy seems fated to a slow and lonely end in the far reaches of space.

The Big-Budget Sci-Fi Movie Universal Forgot To Release Is Now Streaming
Image
Remember Universal Pictures’ sci-fi film Distant, starring Anthony Ramos, Naomi Scott, Kristofer Hivju, and Zachary Quinto? Yeah, probably not. The big-budget flick directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck has been lost in space since it was shot back in 2020. But now, after five years, it has quietly arrived on Hulu on July 3, 2025, without a single promo push, press release, or even a simple social media announcement. Originally filmed during the Covid-19 epidemic, where the filmmakers had to adhere to strict protocols, Distant bounced between release dates over the years: first March 11, 2022, then September 16, then January 27, 2023, before getting completely wiped off the schedule. Even Amblin’s website gave it a brief January 19, 2024 date. But that didn’t happen either. Then, like a shooting star in the middle of the night, it showed up in Vietnam in 2024, quietly, and then disappeared again. Until now. Hulu Is Home To Marvel's Bloodiest (And Strangest) Animated Show
Image
The rise of Marvel Studios has brought countless characters from Marvel Comics to life on the big and small screens. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has shone a spotlight on characters as well known as the Avengers and as obscure as the Guardians of the Galaxy. In recent years, the Marvel takeover has spread to the world of streaming, primarily through a spate of live-action and animated MCU series premiering on Disney+. However, one of the strangest, most surprising, and least known Marvel series is Hulu's "Hit-Monkey." Despite its relative obscurity, "Hit-Monkey" boasts an impressive 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.

Debuting on Hulu in 2021, "Hit-Monkey" is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, who first appeared in 2010. The creation of writer Daniel Way and artist Dalibor Talajić, Hit-Monkey originated in the pages of the one-shot comic "Hit-Monkey" #1, before going on to face...

Will Speck at an event for Blades of Glory (2007)
Distant (2024) Movie Ending Explained: Are Andy and Naomi killed by the creatures?
Will Speck at an event for Blades of Glory (2007)
Josh Gordon and Will Speck’s Distant (2024) joins the ranks of schlocky outer-space dramas that are as generic, predictable, trope-y as it gets. Random creatures are mounted as assailants. They are predators and that throughline is taken to supply the narrative with blasts of action and heightened chase sequences. The drama is dialled up, moments of stillness and companionship are shattered by the invasion of massive threats. Surprise at the threat is followed by attempts to outdo the stalking monster. Life, endangered as it is, becomes doubly imperilled. Escape is evasive. Hope seems forsaken, yet the two characters persist.

The lesson here is solidarity and allyship, a chance connection that rips out peril. Hope shines brighter in this companionship, despite physical separateness. The emotional need for anchorage trumps obstacles, looming danger. Backstories peep out in scattered mini-flashbacks. Trauma and loss are entrenched deep. Nevertheless, people fight back, latching onto whatever is available.

‘Distant’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Will Andy And Naomi Survive?
Image
Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, Distant is a sci-fi drama that revolves around asteroid miner Andy Ramirez and all the challenges he faces when his spaceship crash-lands on an alien planet. With an overdone premise and alien creatures that look somewhat like the demogorgons from Netflix’s Stranger Things, Distant doesn’t bring anything new to the table.

Andy Ramirez was one of the two hundred miners hired by McCluskey Hawthorne Corporation. The journey to the asteroid was supposed to take over four years but was suddenly disrupted when an asteroid collided with the mining vessel ‘Borealis.’ Andy woke up in his pod when the alarms suddenly went off. His AI assistant prepared him for an immediate landing. He landed on an alien planet/asteroid, and his pod started to malfunction. According to his AI assistant, he had to step out immediately. As he tried to wriggle out of his pod,...

From Beloved Geico Commercials to Disastrous ABC Sitcom: An Oral History of ‘Cavemen’
Image
For decades, insurance commercials were total bores. They talked about their policies and what they covered and how important it was to protect your family and everything else about the insurance industry that would put you right to sleep — until one little reptile changed the entire game.

In 1999, Geico introduced the Geico Gecko, the pioneer in making insurance commercials cute, funny and mascot-based. The company’s next ad campaign was just as revolutionary — not to mention, evolutionary. In 2004, it came up with a new motto to promote its new website: “So easy a caveman can do it.” The line was made extra memorable by the commercials that accompanied it. After a generic-looking salesman said to the camera, “So easy a caveman can do it,” a nearby caveman would become wildly offended.

The commercials were a smash hit, but nobody could have predicted what would come next: a caveman TV show.

The Bleakest Video Game of All-Time Is Being Turned into an Action-Comedy
Image
Movies based on video games haven’t had the best track record, lest we forget the Street Fighter disaster of 1994. But that may be changing.

The recent Chris Pratt Insults Italian-Americans (aka The Super Mario Bros. Movie) made over a billion dollars at the global box office. And the HBO series The Last of Us, proved that video games could inspire critically-acclaimed dramatic works that in no way involve talking hedgehogs or raiding tombs.

So it’s no surprise that there are more video game movies coming down the pike. There’s a Legend of Zelda project in the works, and before that, we’ll be getting the vomitous CGI onslaught known as Minecraft. At least Jason Momoa’s stylist seemed to be having fun.

Now this trend is going to even stranger places, as evidenced by the announcement that Apple is developing a movie based on The Oregon Trail.

Image
Break out the covered wagons and gather the settlers because an Oregon Trail movie is officially in the works at Apple. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Oregon Trail is still in the very early stages of development, with the duo of Will Speck and Josh Gordon attached to both direct and produce. Its said to fall within the action-comedy genre, and will even include a couple of musical numbers, with composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul on board to provide original songs. One Of The Earliest Hit Video Games Getting Action-Comedy Movie From Oscar-Nominated Marvel & Jump Street Alums
Image
Movies based on hit video games have been notoriously difficult to get right, but Hit-Monkey creators Will Speck and Josh Gordon have their sights set on adapting The Oregon Trail. Originally created in 1971, the adventure game was initially developed as an educational tool to teach middle school students about 19th-century pioneer life. Renowned for its frequently dark and often amusing outcomes, it would become synonymous with having its players repeatedly die of dysentery. Over the years, the game has seen countless remakes and spinoffs created, with a PlayStation 5 edition released as recently as February 2024.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Speck and Gordon have been tapped by Apple Studios to direct and produce a movie adaptation of The Oregon Trail based on a script penned by screenwriters and comedians The Lucas Bros. (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Max Reisman. The movie adaptation is also reported to feature original musical numbers in the vein of 2023s Barbie,...

Non-mcu Marvel Show's Multiverse Crossover Chances Addressed By Series Creators
Image
Hit-Monkey creators want the show to exist separately from the MCU to maintain its own unique universe and vibe. Despite being distinct, there is potential for Hit-Monkey to cameo in future MCU projects due to the multiverse concept. Hit-Monkey could fit well in the McU's Multiverse Saga, possibly in Avengers: Secret Wars or a new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

The chances of Hit-Monkey crossing over with the Marvel Cinematic Universe are addressed by the series' co-creators. Hit-Monkey is a TV-ma animated series that follows a Japanese snow monkey who becomes an assassin to avenge his clan's death and is mentored by the ghost of Jason Sudeiki's Bryce Fowler, a world-class assassin. Despite focusing on a Marvel character, Hit-Monkey is not part of the MCU. However, with the release of Hit-Monkey season 2, the series' creators comment on a possible MCU crossover.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Hit-Monkey creators Will Speck and...

It’ll be curious to see if they follow this path, because the results make for an incredibly fun and emotional story.

Spielberg Freed of Some Financial Risk via Amblin Partners’ New Deal with Universal
Image
Universal is getting deeper into the Steven Spielberg business and will be carrying more of the weight of the movies he produces.

Universal and Spielberg’s Amblin Partners are forging a new pact under a multi-year deal, but as part of the new arrangement, Amblin Partners will no longer fully finance its own movies that it produces for Universal, and Universal Pictures will be providing some of the backing for Amblin Partners movies made under the deal.

Amblin will continue to produce other movies with rival studios, such as “West Side Story” at 20th Century or “Ready Player One” at Warner Bros., but Universal will have first-look status on all of Amblin’s theatrical projects.

The idea is to give the company “more creative and financial flexibility,” according to the press release announcing the deal. That should mean more opportunities for grown-up oriented projects, like “Green Book” and “1917” that were both released by Universal,...
