The 15 Healthiest Couples in Romance Movies
Image
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to balance high stakes, conflict, and healthy relationships in romantic movies. Toxic couples who fight all the time and break up and then get back together can be exciting in a movie, but there's something special about mature, functional relationships. Healthy couples respect each other's autonomy, communicate effectively, and appreciate each person's unique qualities.

A romance doesn't have to be boring to be mature and refreshingly kind. They exist in even the goofiest and most entertaining comedies, like George of the Jungle. There are many ways to depict happy relationships, and these movie couples prove that love on the big screen can be healthy and scintillating.

Updated on January 3, 2025, by Andrea Sandoval: While romance movies are some of people's favorite genres, they are often riddled with clichés, toxic tropes, and problematic relationships. Oftentimes, these films portray unrealistic and harmful ideals, like love at first sight,...

The Saoirse Ronan Obsession In My Old Ass Explained
Image
One of the best running gags in My Old Ass is Spencers inexplicable obsession with Saoirse Ronan, but its unclear exactly why he loves the Lady Bird star so much. The sophomore outing of director Megan Park, My Old Ass has proven to be a huge streaming hit since it dropped on Prime Video. Its a unique spin on the coming-of-age comedy about a young woman named Elliott who starts appreciating what she has in life after taking magic mushrooms on her 18th birthday and meeting her 39-year-old self during the ensuing trip.

While Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza ably lead the cast of My Old Ass as the younger and older versions of Elliott, respectively, theyre surrounded by great supporting players. Percy Hynes White is unbelievably charming as Elliotts love interest Chad, Maria Dizzia and Al Goulem give delightful turns as her parents, and Seth Isaac Johnson and Carter Trozzolo...

Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella in My Old Ass (2024)
My Old Ass (2024) Movie Review: Time Travel Quirks Add Levity To Generic Coming-Of-Age Comedy
Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella in My Old Ass (2024)
My Old Ass (2024) succeeds as a time travel movie for the same reason that many classics in the subgenre have worked so successfully; it understands that time travel itself is a mechanism used to create interesting plot scenarios, regardless of whether or not the logic of the science makes any actual sense. “Back to the Future” works because the concept of a teenager meeting his parents when they were young is brilliant; similarly, the concept of reliving the same day over and over again is what makes “Groundhog Day” fun, even though it never really offers an explanation for why this is happening.

“My Old Ass” won’t be heralded in the same breath as “Back to the Future” or “Groundhog Day,” but it does find an inventive way of showing the path the inherent struggles with growing older and accepting uncomfortable truths about adulthood. At the center of Megan Park...

‘My Old Ass’ Review: A Heartwarming Coming-of-Age Story with a High-Concept Twist
Image
In Megan Park’s My Old Ass, Elliott (Maisy Stella) celebrates her 18th birthday by wandering off to a nearby forest with her two besties, Ro (Kerrice Brooks) and Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler), to do mushrooms. Meanwhile, her deflated parents (Maria Dizzia and Alain Goulem) look sorrowfully at the surprise birthday cake they prepared for her, wondering how much they’ll see of their daughter before she heads off to college in three weeks. It’s not that Elliott doesn’t love her family, or even her annoying brothers, Max (Seth Isaac Johnson) and Spencer (Carter Trozzolo), but the queer spitfire is yearning to break free—and to have the sorts of experiences that aren’t possible in the small Canadian town in which she was raised.

Refreshingly for a film that centers on a queer person, expressing her queerness isn’t among the experiences that Elliott can’t have here,...

Maisy Stella Goes on a Formative Shroom Trip in 'My Old Ass' Trailer
Image
"The only thing you can't get back is time. It goes by so fast." Amazon MGM Studios has revealed an official trailer for an indie coming-of-age dramedy titled My Old Ass, which first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, also showing at the Provincetown & Sydney Film Fests. It's the latest feature from Canadian filmmaker Megan Park, produced by Margot Robbie, and set / shot up in Canada following a young woman at the end of her time living at home before she heads to university. A mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott face-to-face with her 39-year-old self - starring Aubrey Plaza as the "older" version of herself. But when Elliott's "old ass" delivers warnings, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, life, and love. She ends up tumbling into a romance with a worker boy named Chad, played by Percy Hynes White. My Old Ass stars Maisy Stella as Elliott,...

‘My Old Ass’ Review: Aubrey Plaza in a Sweet Shot of Nostalgia Mixing Romance, Comedy and a Sprinkling of Fantasy
Image
It’s always a welcome surprise to encounter a fresh face who’s also a natural screen presence, which is very much the case with the captivating Maisy Stella in My Old Ass. Not to undersell the newcomer’s individuality, but I kept getting a crunchy granola version of Clueless-era Alicia Silverstone, which is no faint praise. The fact that Stella is often bouncing off Aubrey Plaza in peerless sardonic form just sweetens the deal. Megan Park’s enjoyable second feature is a warm blend of comedy, romance and whimsical collapsed-time fantasy, albeit grounded in the protagonist’s real world.

Not since Toy Story 3 wielded its power to reduce grown-ass adults to puddles of tears has a movie been so in touch with the tender feelings associated with leaving home and saying a definitive goodbye to childhood, wistfully contemplating what we take with us and what we leave behind.

Blu-ray Review: Sophomoric ‘Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal’ Falls Flat
Chicago – Boris Rodriguez’s “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal” tells a laughably inane story ripe for B-movie matinées, yet insists on taking itself (mostly) seriously. The director has made no secret of the fact that he envisions his film to be a meditation on the “darkness of creativity,” and the price that must be paid in order for an artist to find sufficient inspiration.

That could easily make an intriguing subject for a motion picture (and has many times before), but Rodriguez’s metaphorical horror tropes are so obvious and synthetic that they bore when they should provoke. That isn’t to say the film is lacking in the acting department (it isn’t) or doesn’t have some spectacularly unnerving imagery (kudos to Dp Philippe Kress), but on a story level, “Eddie” comes up mightily short. It might’ve made a fine short film, but at 83 minutes, it runs out...

Film Review: ‘Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal’ Doesn’t Have Enough Bite
Rating: 2.5/5.0

Chicago – There’s something deeper going on in “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal,” opening tomorrow at Music Box. I think. It’s about a struggling artist who finds inspiration in a small town when he’s forced to serve as guardian for the title character. Don’t all artists have something in common with cannibals given the way they turn their own (or other people’s) insides into fuel for their creativity? While that’s an engaging and interesting starting place for a horror-comedy, Boris Rodriguez’s movie sadly ends up being neither an effective horror movie nor a memorable satire. It just kind of, pardon me for going there, sleepwalks through its clever set-up.

Thure Lindhardt, so great in “Keep the Lights On,” stars as Lars, a painter who goes to a snowy, secluded town to find his creative muse and does so in the most unexpected of places.

One of the many films being repped at the Marché du Film in Cannes is Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal , director Boris Rodriguez's horror-comedy.
