Among the legion of mascot platformers that defined 90s gaming, Gex stood out. He wasn’t just an animal with an attitude; he was a walking, talking embodiment of the decade’s obsession with television and pop culture.
The Gex Trilogy resurrects this smart-mouthed gecko, packaging his three classic adventures for modern systems and audiences. The premise is simple and consistent across the series: Gex, a chill gecko relaxing in his home, is unwillingly pulled into the Media Dimension by the villainous Rez.
This narrative serves as the perfect vehicle for a string of parody-focused worlds, from spooky cemeteries to cartoon wonderlands and sci-fi landscapes. Playing this collection feels like opening a time capsule, offering a direct look into the design philosophies and specific brand of humor that characterized a very particular moment in video game history.

There is, for devotees of a specific type of movie arcana, a glorious moment in Jason Statham’s new movie, “A Working Man.” About midway through, his character, searching for a trafficked young woman, poses as a drug dealer looking to score a connection with a local kingpin holding court in the backroom of a biker bar. The kingpin suspects he’s a cop, but after Jason handily dispatches his goons, the kingpin, regarding his fists, says, “Look at those bricks. You ain’t a cop, you’re a working man.”

Since the success of old-school sitcoms like I Love Lucy and All In the Family, comedy has proven one of TV's most successful genres, with some shows running for over a decade. As impressive as the genre's longevity is, some audiences prefer shorter series that they can enjoy across a single day. A shorter show gives the audience something easy to digest, and some series surpass the quality of long sitcoms in a mere six episodes.
Comedy shows come in a range of formats, tones and styles, from dark comedy to witty satire and everything in between. While the classic weekly sitcom formula is still king, sometimes more can be said with less, and these shorter shows allow more focus on character building. Long shows always risk falling into a repetitive cycle of unoriginal stories, while compressing more into less forces the best out of writers.

In an interview with the new PBS SoCal digital series Locationland, location manager Danny Finn describes the kismet moment when he discovered that the house used for Freaky Friday in 2003 was still standing and still owned by the same woman. Even better, she was open to allowing it to be used again for Disney’s August 2025 release, Freakier Friday.
“I called and got an old, robotic answering machine, left a Hail Mary voicemail,” Finn recalled. “Two minutes later I got a call from an unknown number and this voice answered, ‘Hi. It’s Me. Yes, I still live here. Same house, new husband, all good.’ So we ended up shooting there, which was wonderful.”
Then, last week, everything changed.
“We’ve since confirmed that that house — along with every house on that block — was lost in the Palisades Fire,” he told Locationland.

Does Peacock’s new series, ‘Hysteria!’ make the list?
It’s the spooky season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a laugh at the same time.
That’s why I’m pulling out my list of the top 7 horror comedy TV shows you can stream right now – just in time to enjoy Peacock’s newest entry to the genre with “Hysteria!” The new horror comedy series is set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s when a heavy metal band trying to take advantage of the craze finds themselves at the center of a witch-hunt. If you missed my movie list of top horror comedies, check it out here. And if you’re wondering why I don’t have a list of straight-up scary movies, the reason is simple – I don’t watch them because they terrify me. My babysitter showed me the original “It” when...

"A band on a mission. A door to another dimension." Buffalo 8 has launched the official trailer for a rock comedy called Free LSD, which is not really abut How To Get Free LSD, unfortunately. This wacky, weird punk creation is from a a rock band called Off!, and it's the feature directorial debut from one of the band members - Dimitri Coats (ex-Burning Brides). Alas they are taking an "indefinite hiatus" after a few shows coming up this month. The "breaking up" tour with the band will also include screenings of this film Free LSD showing with a Q&a and other surprises (before it hits VOD). "Sometimes putting the band together is a matter of life and death." This new film is an oddball sci-fi comedy about AI & multiverses. An elderly sex shop owner’s attraction to a younger woman leads him to an erectile dysfunction doctor whose treatment...

Buffalo 8 has acquired the science fiction comedy “Free LSD” from punk rock supergroup Off! and a trailer has been unveiled.
The film, which closed the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival, shares its title with the band’s album that debuted at #20 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart.
“Free LSD” stars Keith Morris (Off!’s frontman) as an elderly sex shop owner who falls for a younger woman. His romantic escapades lead him to an unconventional erectile dysfunction doctor and an experimental drug. The drug’s side effects transport him to a parallel universe where he is not only Off!’s singer but also the target of a relentless AI species bent on preventing the band from creating a consciousness-altering album.
The cast includes Off! bandmates Dimitri Coats and Autry Fulbright II, along with the late Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro. Joining them are Jack Black, James Duval, Dana Gould, Barry Del Sherman,...

Scott Grimes shares a Ted season 2 production update as he reveals read-throughs are already underway for the scripts of the next season. Grimes also teases that the premiere episode "may or may not" feature Uncle Matty half naked. While season 1 proved to be a major hit for Peacock, season 2 will have to avoid the foibles of the sequel movie to keep the success streak going.

Seth MacFarlane’s Ted has made the leap to the small screen, and we’ve learned that the series will be broadcast on Sky Max in February.
Ted was Seth MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut, and it would be fair to say the film made quite an impact.
Released in 2012, it contained all the profane, puckish humour MacFarlane honed in his years showrunning Family Guy. The plot followed Mark Wahlberg as John, an ageing adolescent who spends his time drinking, getting high and pulling pranks with his best friend, the sentient stuffed toy Ted, while neglecting his relationship with Lori, played by Mila Kunis.
The sequel arrived in 2015 sans Kunis, and didn’t quite hit the same mark. But still: it made a good chunk of money, and that opened the door for a third Ted film. Nine years on, though, and there’s no sign of Ted 3. Instead, MacFarlane...

Plot: In this comedic prequel event series to the Ted films, it’s 1993, and Ted the bear’s moment of fame has passed. He’s now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett, along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan and cousin Blaire. Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship.
Review: Seth MacFarlane is an acquired taste. Family Guy is the type of series that you either love or hate. When MacFarlane jumped to the big screen with A Million Ways To Die In The West, he showed an aptitude for crude humor in live action. With the Ted films, MacFarlane dove deeper into the heartfelt and feel-good humor underneath all the crass jokes and bodily fluids. I...

This year’s Rhode Island Comic Con guest list boasted big names like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Carrie-Anne Moss, Christina Ricci, Evangeline Lilly, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Linda Hamilton, and Marissa Tomei, to name a few, alongside hundreds of vendors and artists.
A highlight of the weekend was an intimate panel with legendary special effects artist-turned-director Greg Nicotero, who shared his reflections on The Walking Dead now that it has come to an end, in addition to insight from nearly 40 years in the industry.

Remembering The Comedians Of Comedy, Netflix's First True Original Production (A Quasi-Oral History)
If I asked you to name the first original production from Netflix, what would you say? An educated guess might bring you to "House of Cards" or "Lilyhammer," and that's a fair assessment. While the former was Netflix's first piece of original programming produced specifically for the company's streaming service (released in February of 2013), the latter technically has the honor of being Netflix's first original streaming production (premiering on Netflix in February of 2012), even though it was only partially funded by Netflix and actually premiered in Norway first under the TV network NRK1.
But what if I told you that neither of these was the first true Netflix original? What if I told you Netflix produced their first original production even before they created the now-defunct Red Envelope Entertainment? Yes, before streaming, Netflix had a film financing and acquisition arm that shuttered in 2008 after investing in more than 100 films and...

The entertainment industry has been brought to a standstill by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The two unions are fighting for appropriate wages for their work, as well as ensure the future of their careers in light of advancements in artificial intelligence and fewer long-term opportunities. It's a struggle that's been felt by both unions and many other members of the film and television world.
Striking is also something that The Simpsons is familiar with, both in-universe and out of it. Within the show itself, multiple episodes have seen the titular family working with various unions to bring down institutions and protect the rights of Springfield's citizens. In real life, the voices behind the series threatened to go on strike to secure a better contract for the cast -- and succeeded, highlighting how the people behind some of entertainment's biggest prooperties can enact change.

The Simpsons writers recently joined the Writer's Guild of America writers strike for a memorable day. The strike, which just concluded week 6, began when the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers couldn't strike a deal with the WGA, who are fighting for expanded writers rooms, restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence, residuals for streaming programs, and many other issues that have affected compensation and job security in Hollywood.
Per Deadline, writers from classic and modern The Simpsons episodes alike recently joined the picket lines outside Fox, including Conan O’Brien, James L. Brooks, Matt Selman, Al Jean, and Dana Gould. Also present was the show's co-creator Matt Groening. While many picketers brought their own Simpsons-related signs, Groening also drew custom signs featuring Simpsons characters and slogans like "Lisa needs residuals." Check out select social media posts from the Simpsons strike below:

What was it that Homer once said? “Lisa, if you don’t like your job you don’t strike. You just go in every day and do it really half-assed. That’s the American way.”
But that’s not the WGA way. So Friday, the creative team behind The Simpsons (present and past!) hit the picket line at Fox and even treated fellow strikers to specially-designed placards from the man himself — Matt Groening. Also joining the line were beloved scribes James L. Brooks, Al Jean, Matt Selman, Dana Gould and Conan O’Brien, among others.
In a tweet, Tyler Ruggeri wrote, “The Simpsons picket at Fox was by far our biggest and best day on the lot.” Groening, meanwhile, cooked up a few custom signs that had Bart saying “Steamed hams? More like steamed writers” and Lisa saying “Lisa needs residuals.”

“As you all know as fans of Bruce [Campbell]’s, he is known for his incredibly wide range. He can play not only people who look like him, but people who look and act like him,” quipped Dana Gould, creator of Stan Against Evil and former The Simpsons writer/producer/voice actor. “Bruce is a Renaissance man, by which I mean he is incredibly old. But he is aging like a fine wine: largely out of the public view.”
Gould — who acted alongside the horror icon in Disney’s 1997 TV movie The Love Bug — served as the roastmaster for Sf Sketchfest’s Roast of Bruce Campbell. Just two days before Sundance Film Festival will unveil its lineup, the other major January Utah festival has released theirs. Now in its 29th iteration, next year’s Slamdance Film Festival––which will also be providing programming both in-person and online, from January 20th through 29th––has unveiled its features slate. The lineup for the festival, which opens with Moby’s Punk Rock Vegan Movie, was culled from 7,600 total submissions, 1,522 of which were features. All films selected in the Narrative Features and Documentary Features competition categories are directorial debuts without U.S. distribution, with budgets of less than 1 million Usd.

Rick Baker is a legend. The special makeup effects master is responsible for creating work for "Videodrome," "Thriller," "Harry and the Hendersons," "Coming to America," "Men in Black," "The Nutty Professor," and so much more. His work is iconic (and I don't use that word lightly) and arguably unparalleled. Hell, he won the very first Oscar for Best Makeup for his groundbreaking work on "American Werewolf in London," and he would go on to win the award a record seven times. In short, Rick Baker is one of the best to ever do it.
Not only is Baker an artist, but he's also a fan of the classic makeup work of cinema, particularly the Universal Monsters, most of which were created by Jack Pierce. So it makes sense that when Universal decided to remake "The Wolfman," Baker would want to be on board to bring the lycanthrope to life. Baker...

Back in 2018, Dana Gould (along with artist Chad Lewis), adapted Rod Serling's original script for Planet of the Apes (itself an adaptation of Pierre Boulle's novel of the same name) as a graphic novel for Boom! Studios, so it's especially fitting that Gould is now playing his own version of Dr. Zaius as the host of his own ’70s talk show in the second season of Hanging with Doctor Z!

Chicago – The career of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait is a wild roller coaster of hilarity and passion, so it stands to reason that his latest film is called “Joy Ride.” The film, one of the funniest stand up docs you’ll ever see, also features Bobcat’s comedy partner Dana Gould on a stand up tour right before the pandemic. It’s available through VOD and iTunes, click Joy Ride for details.
“Joy Ride” is essentially a stand-up comedy tour documentary, because it is rooted in the career overviews of Bobcat and Dana. Both men have had trials and tribulations in show business, based on backgrounds that included difficulties in their youth. These situations become their comedy in the film, with Gould especially opening up on a complete meltdown in the 1990s. The Bobcat past highlights are especially telling, and has precipitated a long running feud between the comic and his fellow traveler Jerry Seinfeld.

Joy Ride Review: Bobcat Goldthwait and Dana Gould Take On The South in Engaging Stand-Up Documentary
Bobcat Goldthwait has made a career of dissecting what makes tragedy funny. It’s an impressive second act for the comedian, who was once known primarily for that voice (you know the one) and that character (Zed) from that comedy franchise (Police Academy). Joy Ride, directed by Goldthwait, who co-stars with Dana Gould, documents the duo as they travel across the American South discussing everything from their strange friendship, their similar upbringings, and the severe hypocrisies of conservatism.
At the top, the comedians acknowledge the serious car accident that stunted the beginning of the documentary. It left both with injuries, Goldthwait even sustaining a concussion for his trouble. But no matter, just another piece of solid material on stage. At a breezy 70 minutes, Goldthwait and Gould make an immensely watchable pair. “I didn’t know you were crazier then me?” Goldthwait says of Gould at one point. “Oh yeah,” Gould confidently responds.

“Hello, Atlanta!” Bobcat Goldthwait greets his enthusiastic audience in a small comedy club at the start of “Joy Ride.” “A funny thing happened on the way to the show.” Actually, what happened was a near-fatal 2019 automobile accident that, contrary to contemporary news reports of the mishap, seriously injured Goldthwait and fellow comic Dana Gould while they were driving to a joint stand-up gig. But as this engagingly intimate documentary makes clear: They’re still standing. And doing stand-up.
Goldthwait and Gould prove to be engaging traveling companions offstage and amusing performers in the spotlight throughout “Joy Ride,” Goldthwait’s amiably no-frills account of their 2020 tour of comedy clubs in Los Angeles, Georgia and North Carolina.
The venues where they perform are a few steps short of world-renowned showcases, something Goldthwait indirectly acknowledges during a bit in which he dismisses “fans” who unfollowed him on Twitter after learning of his left-leaning...

Refresh for updates…Early exuberance in Hollywood surrounding news of a new IATSE contract has dimmed somewhat, as more details about the deal negotiated with the AMPTP have emerged.
Among those walking back or contextualizing their initial reactions on Saturday evening was Yvette Nicole Brown, who initially tweeted “#UnionStrong!”, along with emojis depicting a raised fist and heart.
“And let me add,” the Emmy-nominated actor and comic later wrote, “I’m excited if @IATSE members are excited. This is their new contract potentially. They get to decide if what’s being offered is what they need to feel safe, well-paid and respected.”
Writer-producer Gennefer Gross originally tweeted: “Congrats to the #IATSE for striking a deal! This is what happens when you stand united for fairness and equality in an industry that far too often puts profit over people. Thank an assistant or crew member today for their tireless efforts and...

Criterion gives this classic its first exposure on Region A Blu-ray! A new 4K remaster puts the story of a guy too tiny to escape from his own cellar in its very best light — Scott Carey’s combat with the spider is still a scary delight, with a newly-fixed imperfection. Criterion’s extras lean toward fan-oriented fare: Tom Weaver tops the stack with a fine commentary and we get good input from Ben Burtt, Craig Barron, Richard Christian Matheson, Joe Dante and Dana Gould — plus thoughtful liner notes by Geoffrey O’Brien. And don’t forget those excellent movie trailers narrated by a breathless Orson Welles. Robert Scott Carey should have his own statue in Los Angeles, like Rocky Balboa in Philadelphia.

The moviegoing landscape in Los Angeles has been a little sadder without the return of the shuttered Arclight, but two of LA’s savviest cinephiles are hoping to do something about it. Director Rian Johnson and Karina Longworth, author and creator of the beloved “You Must Remember This” podcast, are pledging $100,000 as founding members of Vidiots, the iconic LA video store and nonprofit film organization. Vidiots is currently undergoing a nine-month renovation at the historic Eagle Theatre in the Eagle Rock neighborhood. Their gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 through September 17.
“Given the recent demise or transformation of some of our most beloved places for moviegoing in Los Angeles, it feels more urgent than ever to celebrate and support the rebirth of Vidiots. We hope you’ll join us in helping the women of Vidiots build an inclusive shrine to movies — both projected in a community setting, and preserved on physical media,...

Hannah Einbinder and Jana Schmieding landed plum roles in two of this year’s most buzzed-about comedy series: “Hacks” and “Rutherford Falls.” For each this marks a first foray into acting after years of toiling as a stand-up comic. And each is paired with a veteran performer in their acclaimed new shows. Einbinder spars with Emmy darling Jean Smart while Schmieding is stealing scenes from Ed Helms. Though their shows may be streaming on different services — HBO Max and Peacock respectively — they share the same executive producer: Michael Schur.
Einbinder plays Ava, a young comedy writer who, after a Twitter controversy, lands the only job she can find: writing for legendary stand-up comic Deborah Vance (Smart). In Entertainment Weekly, Kristin Baldwin observed, “Einbinder is immensely appealing as Ava. With her precision timing and bored California drawl, the actress brings such compelling confidence to her entitled, condescending character that it’s...

UFOs are often visible, but not always. Sometimes they make noise, sometimes they are silent. If you’ve never seen a flying saucer, that is proof they are everywhere. This is one of the many amazing things we learn in TCM’s upcoming table read of Ed Wood’s masterwork, Plan 9 from Outer Space.
We once laughed at the horseless carriage, the aero-plane, the telephone, the electric light, vitamins, radio, and even television. But it took a while to get the joke about Plan 9 from Outer Space. Written and directed by Edward D. Wood Jr. in 1959, it was a little-known independent film with a direct line through directors who carried on the DIY-filmmaking spirit like John Cassavetes, Melvin Van Peebles and John Waters. The Cult of Plan 9 began when Ed Wood was posthumously awarded a Golden Turkey Award for Worst Director of All Time in 1980. Though this has been disputed.

Last year, shortly after the pandemic hit the U.S., WarnerMedia’s TCM — with about three weeks notice — shifted its annual in-person TCM Classic Film Festival to a hybrid online/network experience.
When the TCM team determined they were not going to be able to hold the fest in person again in 2021, they made an even bigger pivot to provide two virtual venues for this year’s Classic Film Festival — on both the TV network and with corporate sibling HBO Max.
For the first time ever, the TCM Classic Film Festival will be hosted on both the network’s channel and HBO Max, featuring an extensive festival lineup for fans nationwide on May 6-9, 2021. (HBO Max hadn’t launched before last year’s fest.)

Maria Bamford, Bobcat Goldthwait, Bob Odenkirk lead reading of Ed Wood’s movie as part of TCM Classic Film Festival Friday
A flying saucer? You mean… from up there? Yes! Flying saucers were seen circling Hollywood Blvd. as a group of stars gathered for a table read of “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” Ed Wood’s cult film that has been dubbed one of the worst movies of all time.
It’s all part of the TCM Classic Film Festival, for which comedians like Maria Bamford, Bob Odenkirk and Bobcat Goldthwait will read aloud the script to the maligned masterpiece. TheWrap obtained an exclusive clip from what is sure to be the silly shlockfest ahead of its premiere on Friday, May 7.
The above clip shows comedians Laraine Newman, Dana Gould and Kat Aagesen setting up the impending alien attack and resurrection of the dead, complete with an eerie and canny theremin in the score.
