Susan Sarandon Will Make London Stage Debut Starring With Andrea Riseborough In Tracy Letts Play ‘Mary Page Marlowe’
Image
Oscar winner Susan Sarandon said she’s “terrified but excited” to be making her UK stage debut this fall at London’s The Old Vic Theatre starring with Academy Award nominee Andrea Riseborough in the U.K. premiere of Tracy Letts’ play Mary Page Marlowe which spans 70 years in a woman’s life.

Sarandon and Riseborough will play the title character at different stages of her story.

The production will be directed by The Old Vic’s artistic director Matthew Warchus in his final season before stopping down in September 2026.

Sarandon has appeared both on and off Broadway several times beginning with An Evening with Richard Nixon and … that ran 16 performances at the Shubert Theatre in 1972. She last trod the boards in NYC in Jesse Eisenberg’s Happy Talk at the Pershing Square Signature center in 2019.

I saw her in Eisenberg’s play.

Breaking Baz @ Cannes: Nicole Kidman, “The Barefoot Queen Of Cannes”, Wanted To Party On The Beach But Had To Fly Home For Her Kids’ Exams
Image
One can only marvel at Nicole Kidman’s astuteness. The actress and producer wanted to know where I was scooting off to after the Kering/Festival de Cannes Women in Motion dinner Sunday night. When I started to tell her about the afterparty for Akinola Davies Jr’s My Father’s Shadow, her eyes lit up.

“That’s one of the hits of the festival, right? First-time director, shot in Nigeria, right?”

Kidman then proceeded to quiz me about the movie and the filmmaker siblings Akinola and Wale Davies, who penned the script together.

She would’ve loved the party on the beach thrown jointly for My Father’s Shadow and Harry Lighton’s biker romance Pillion.

During his presentation to Kidman, Cannes fest chief Thierry Frémaux hailed her as the “Barefoot Queen of Cannes” because of her propensity to whip off her heels whenever possible. “Yeah, but you’re not allowed to do that now,...

‘I always thought it would be amazing to be the first person to play a role’: Ewan McGregor on his return to the UK stage
Michael Grandage
As the star teams up with director Michael Grandage for his first West End part in 17 years, the pair discuss the thrill of putting on a new play, how it updates Ibsen for our times – and a Trainspotting-esque toilet encounter in Russia

In September last year, it was announced that Ewan McGregor, the 54-year-old Scottish actor, had been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The news item happened to pop up on the feed of Michael Grandage, the theatre director who worked with McGregor in the mid-2000s on two productions, Guys and Dolls and Othello, both under the Donmar Warehouse umbrella. “I thought, ‘Oh God, how brilliant is that!’” exclaims Grandage, who is 62 and since 2012 has been the artistic director of the Michael Grandage Company. “We hadn’t been in touch for a long time and I just thought that I’d send him a text,...

The West End In 2025: John Lithgow In Broadway-Bound ‘Giant’, Paul Mescal, Brie Larson, Sondheim’s ‘Here We Are’ And Maybe Even ‘Cat On A Hot Tin Roof’s Sizzling Daisy Edgar-Jones
Image
Tennessee Williams sets Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, his 1955 play about sexual repression, at a cotton plantation on the Mississippi Delta. You can feel the heat in director Rebecca Frecknall’s production at the Almeida Theatre starring a scorching Daisy Edgar-Jones as Maggie, the cat in question, who does all in her power to jolt her inattentive husband, Brick — played superbly by Kingsley Ben-Adir — out of his self-inflicted stupor.

The play opened just a few days ago and there’s already chatter about it transferring into the West End, most appropriately, next summer, and Edgar-Jones must be persuaded to move with it, along with Ben-Adir, Lennie James’ powerful Big Daddy and Clare Burt’s cotton-headed Big Mama.

Edgar-Jones’ Maggie the cat is a study in the art of allure, and calculation; she prowls the Almeida stage like a hungry feline wanting to play with her prey before gobbling it up,...

Ewan McGregor Returning To London Stage For First Time In 17 Years With ‘My Master Builder’
Image
Ewan McGregor has signed on to tread the boards for the first time in 17 years with a remake of Henrik Ibsen’s 1892 play The Master Builder.

The new project was written by American playwright Lila Raicek and will be directed by Michael Grandage. The play will run on London’s West End between April and July 2025.

Speaking this morning with the BBC, McGregor said his 17-year absence from the stage is “the longest I haven’t been on stage, and in honesty, I’ve missed it.”

“The funny story is, I had literally just finished reading Ibsen’s The Master Builder for pleasure – an extraordinary read,” McGregor continued. “Michael got in touch out of the blue and I mentioned how much I’d love to get back on stage.”

The Master Builder follows Halvard Solness, an acclaimed architect of a small Norweigan town who begins to unravel over fears his young rival will overtake him.

Emma Corrin And Kodi Smit-McPhee Joining Cate Blanchett’s ‘The Seagull’, Which Soars Onto London Stage In 2025
Image
Emma Corrin, hot from playing villainous Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine, will join Cate Blanchett in the eagerly awaited new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull at London’s Barbican Theatre in 2025.

Another addition to an already sizzling company is Kodi Smit-McPhee, who shot to fame in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog. He also appears with an incandescent Angelina Jolie in Netflix’s awards-season hopeful Maria.

It’s a family reunion, of sorts, for Blanchett and McPhee. They play mother and son in Alfonso Cuarón’s brilliant seven-part Apple TV+ drama Disclaimer, which premieres on the streamer October 11. The two Australian-born actors also play related characters in The Seagull: Blanchett takes on the part of theatrical grand dame Irina Arkadina and McPhee plays her son Konstantin.

Image
For what it feels like the first time in forever, Disney is pulling all the strings to beat all the records possible. Armed with many exciting updates for its upcoming projects, Frozen III also got the first look at the concept art.

Frozen is one of Disney's most popular animated franchises ever. It's also incredibly bankable, as it grossed $2.76 billion at the worldwide box office, and won two Academy Awards. The first film premiered in 2013 with its sequel following six years later, in 2019, becoming the highest-grossing animation of all time, with $1.45 billion. That record was broken this year with Inside Out 2, but luckily Disney confirmed Frozen III is happening, giving it a chance to win back its title. On top of that, it's keeping fans invested as it revealed the concept art for the upcoming threequel at D23.

Harry Styles' Marvel Character Returns In New MCU Multiverse Project Played By A Different Actor
Image
What If? An Immersive Story features Starfox's return three years after his introduction in Eternals' post-credits scene, this time not played by Harry Styles. Harry Styles appears to be taking a break from acting, but that doesn't mean he won't play Starfox if the MCU ever brings the character back. What If...? seasons 1 and 2 have recast multiple characters exclusively for their animated appearances.

Three years after Eternals, Harry Styles' Eros a.k.a. Starfox appears for the first time in an MCU project, but this time played by a new actor. Eternals introduced more than a dozen characters early in the McU's Multiverse Saga, including the ten titular heroes, the Deviants, and the Celestials. Eternals' post-credits scene also featured the MCU debut of two eccentric heroes: Harry Styles' Eternal hero Starfox and Patton Oswalt's mystical creature Pip the Troll, who meet Makkari, Druig, and Thena as they leave Earth in their mothership.

Harry Styles at an event for Dunkirk (2017)
Unofficial Harry Styles documentary is heading to DVD this February
Harry Styles at an event for Dunkirk (2017)
Harry Styles: Are You Curious?, a completely unauthorised documentary on the ex-One Directioner is heading to DVD.

Harry Styles: Are You Curious?, a feature-length documentary about the rise and… well, rise of Harry Styles from a teenage heartthrob to an internationally acclaimed artist is heading to DVD in February.

Now, mind you, this is not in any capacity an official documentary and has no direct involvement from Styles himself. Instead, director Robert Hearn uses mostly archive footage of Styles at various engagements and events and interviews fans and presumably other people who are well-versed in their Harry Styles knowledge.

Styles first became known to the public as part of One Direction, a boy band which rose to fame from X Factor in 2010. One Direction was one of the most influential boy bands of the modern era, but has since disbanded.

Arguably, Styles’ music career has taken off the most compared to his old band mates.

Image
Exclusive: King Charles III heaped royal praise on Andrew Lloyd Webber when he first heard the composer play a piano version of the coronation anthem, telling the peer that the music gave him “goosebumps and tears.”

The anthem, titled Make A Joyful Noise, was just performed in all its glory during today’s Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, as it was broadcasted and streamed to millions around the world.

Lloyd Webber revealed the King’s thoughts to us after he’d given a hush-hush preview of the anthem’s recording. He added he felt “humbled and moved” by the monarch’s “kind words.”

The musical theatre giant was specially commissioned to compose the anthem for their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “I mean, he could have said that he hated it and I would have had to have started it all over again,” Lloyd Webber joked.

The 11 Best LGBTQ Movies of 2022
Image
As 2022 wraps up, the end of the year presents an opportunity to look back on how LGBTQ representation fared on the big screen. According to GLAAD’s 10th Annual Studio Responsibility Index, the percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films (as well as racial diversity and screen time for queer characters) dipped in 2021.

While this year’s official report has yet to be released, it appears to have recovered some ground. From theaters to streamers, it’s been an impressive year for LGBTQ flicks, from joyful summer rom-coms “Bros” and “Fire Island” to sobering dramas like “My Policeman” and “The Inspection.” That includes some of the most talked-about titles of awards season – “The Whale,” “Tár”, and “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” to name a few.

If you’re looking for your next themed binge of the holiday break, read on for the 11 best LGBTQ movies of 2022.

Best Of The West (End): A Look Back At London Theatre In 2022
Image
So, here’s the good news. Martha Plimpton has packed up her home in New York to live and work in London. Pooches to follow.

Her first gig? Playing Jacque in Shakespeare’s As You Like It on the stage of @sohoplace, the West End’s first purpose-built theatre in half a century. That Plimpton should deliver, with aplomb, the ‘All the world’s a stage’ monologue in Josie Rourke’s lively festive production, seems wholly appropriate because the same viewpoint applies elsewhere in town.

Toronto International Film Festival Announces 2022 TIFF Tribute Award for Performance

The cast of Michael Grandage’s My Policeman — Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett — are the first-ever film ensemble to receive this honour

Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, has announced that the ensemble cast of My Policeman — Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett — will be honoured with the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.

Now in its fourth year, the TIFF Tribute Awards presented by Bvlgari will return to an in-person gala fundraiser during the 47th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 11, at Fairmont Royal York Hotel. As previously announced, My Policeman by director Michael Grandage will have its World Premiere at this year’s Festival.

The TIFF Tribute Award for Performance is presented by Polestar.

“When your film shifts through time and across fluid boundaries of love and desire, you need a cast that can embody those nuances in every gesture,” said Bailey. “Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson deliver beautiful, mirrored performances with Linus Roache, Gina McKee, and Rupert Everett. We’re thrilled to honour the ensemble cast of My Policeman with the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.”

Adapted for the screen by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner from Bethan Roberts’ award-winning novel of the same name, Prime Video’s My Policeman follows three young people — policeman Tom (Styles), teacher Marion (Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (Dawson) — as they embark on an emotional journey in 1950s Britain. Flashing forward to the 1990s, Tom (Roache), Marion (McKee), and Patrick (Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past. Grandage carves a visually transporting, heart-stopping portrait of three people caught up in the shifting tides of history, liberty, and forgiveness.

For the first time ever, the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance will be celebrating an ensemble cast in the now gender-neutral acting category. This is the first of two performance awards to be announced. Past recipients honoured in the prestigious acting category were Jessica Chastain and Benedict Cumberbatch in 2021; Kate Winslet and Sir Anthony Hopkins in 2020; and Meryl Streep and Joaquin Phoenix in 2019.

The TIFF Tribute Awards have served as an awards-season bellwether, with past honourees Jessica Chastain, Roger Deakins, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Joaquin Phoenix, Taika Waititi, and Chloé Zhao going on to win awards on the international stage. The TIFF Tribute Awards honour the film industry’s outstanding contributors and their achievements, recognizing leading industry members, acting talent, directorial expertise, new talent, and a below-the-line artist and creator. The Awards event also serves as TIFF’s largest annual fundraiser to support TIFF’s Every Story fund, which promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in film and TIFF’s core mission to transform the way people see the world through film. More information on the 2022 TIFF Tribute Awards event and this year’s honourees will follow in the coming weeks.

My Policeman (2022) – Movie Review

My Policeman is a 2022 drama movie starring Harry Styles, Emma Corrin and David Dawson. It is directed by Michael Grandage and it has been written by Ron Nyswaner. It is based on the novel by Bethan Roberts.

Premise

In the late 1990s, the arrival of Patrick, an elderly and disabled man, at Marion and Tom’s home triggers an exploration of seismic events from 40 years earlier: the passionate relationship between Tom and Patrick at a time when homosexuality was illegal.

My Policeman (2022) Movie Review

An elegant movie and, above all, a spectacular vintage reconstruction that knows how to capture the feeling of the time and the environment with all its coldness, and this is precisely why it has not gone down too well.

It has been received tepidly for its lack of personality, for its formal style and, above all, for telling a story that lacks novelty, and in a...

For Academy and BAFTA Award-nominated production designer Maria Djurkovic, the best part of any film is discovering its visual language — its look, mood, atmosphere, color palette and sensibility. But what is important to her is that this language arises from the material itself. That was certainly the case with her latest effort, “My Policeman,” whose script she was sent during the first Covid-19 lockdown and whose attitude immediately leapt off the page.

“For me, that initial response about mood and atmosphere is absolutely crucial, [it] doesn’t matter what the project is… One of the ways that I know if I should be doing a particular film or not is whether I do see pictures immediately,” reveals Djurkovic during her recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I absolutely did [with ‘My Policeman’] — it had a very strong atmosphere and a very evocative mood.”

Based on Bethan Roberts’ 2012 novel of the same name,...

Emma Corrin of 'The Crown' bats for gender-neutral award categories
Image
English actress Emma Corrin, who played Diana Frances Spencer, Princess of Wales in Season 4 of the streaming series ‘The Crown’, has called for genderless categories at major entertainment awards shows, reports Variety.

The actress shared the above sentiment in an interview with BBC News. In particular, Corrin, who identifies as non-binary as she uses they/them pronouns, noted that nominations for best actor and best actress should be merged into one, gender-neutral category.

According to Variety, Corrin has earned praise for their supporting performance in Michael Grandage’s new period drama ‘My Policeman’ but the actress shares that they feel discomfort at the prospect of campaigning in a gendered category.

“It’s difficult for me at the moment trying to justify in my head being non-binary and being nominated in female categories,” Corrin told BBC News. “When it comes to categories, do we need to make it specific as to...

How ‘My Policeman’ costume designer Annie Symons created that perfectly tailored police uniform for Harry Styles [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
You could say that working on “My Policeman” would be any costume designer’s dream. The movie, which had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on October 21 before debuting on Amazon Prime Video on November 4, is a romantic period drama that takes place across two timelines in 20th-century Britain and features everything from a well-attended opera performance to an excursion to sun-drenched Venice. But what primarily attracted Annie Symons to the project was actually the profoundness of the story.

“I couldn’t stop crying,” reveals the film’s Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning costume designer about her visceral reaction to reading the script for the first time in her recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch our exclusive video interview above). “I thought it was so powerful and so personal. I thought… this story will be personal to just about everybody watching it for some reason or another. And I...

Independent Spirit Awards Nominations: ‘Everything Everywhere’ Leads With Eight Noms
Image
The Independent Spirit Awards announced its nominations in film and television on Tuesday morning, where The Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” led the tally with eight nominations. Right behind was Todd Field’s “Tár” with seven and Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” with five.

Some of the big surprises were a complete shutout of Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” and its best actor frontrunner Brendan Fraser. Will that hurt his Oscar chances? Notable names like Jake Gyllenhaal from “Brokeback Mountain” were also snubbed by the organization and went on to receive recognition.

Other notable omissions were Danielle Deadwyler’s stunning performance in Chinonye Chukwu’s “Till,” in addition to James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” and acting hopeful Jeremy Strong. Michael Grandage’s “My Policeman” wasn’t able to nab supporting noms for either Emma Corrin or Harry Styles.

“Women Talking” won the Robert Altman award which is given to one film’s director,...

My Policeman Wastes the Talent of Its Supporting Cast
Image
Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for My Policeman. My Policeman, which debuted on Amazon Prime last week and was directed by Michael Grandage, has received extensive criticism for its predictable script and melodramatic plot line, as well as the underconfidence of its leading man, Harry Styles. Styles plays closeted policeman Tom Burgess, who, trying to survive institutionalized homophobia in 1950s Brighton, marries schoolteacher Marion (Emma Corrin) to conceal his passionate love affair with art curator Patrick Hazlewood (David Dawson). However, as Patrick's efforts to hold onto Tom become increasingly desperate and Tom's relationship with Marion unravels subsequently, the film suffers from its own foregone conclusion: Namely, Marion's lifelong feelings of guilt over her final, and successful, effort to sabotage her husband's homosexual affair.

‘My Policeman’ Review: Harry Styles’ LGBTQ Love-Triangle Tale Can’t Balance Time Periods
Michael Grandage
This review originally ran on September 11, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

A love triangle plays out over decades in Michael Grandage’s “My Policeman,” based on the 2012 novel by Bethan Roberts, who was inspired by the 40-year relationship between English novelist E.M. Forster and policeman Bob Buckingham, as well Buckingham’s wife, May, who also became close with Forster. As described by Roberts in a 2012 essay in The Guardian, this quiet, proto-polyamorous situation was “a wonderful muddle,” which seemingly worked for all three participants in their own way.

The relationship at the center of “My Policeman,” isn’t so much wonderful as it is tragic. Instead of finding a happily unconventional comfort as Forster and the Buckinghams may have, the three individuals in “My Policeman” end up jealous, unsatisfied and oppressed, and the film explores the ways in which one might attempt to right decades of wrongs.

Where Was My Policeman Filmed
Image
Warning: This Article Contains Spoilers For My PolicemanHarry Styles' LGBTQ+ romantic drama My Policeman was predominantly filmed in Brighton and surrounding areas across the Sussex coast in England. Co-starring The Crown's Emma Corrin and Peaky Blinders' David Dawson and based on the novel by Bethan Roberts, it tells the story of a love triangle between secretive same-sex couple Tom (Styles) and Patrick (Dawson), and Tom's wife Marion (Corrin) in 1950s Brighton. At a time when homosexuality was criminalized in the UK, the love triangle becomes increasingly fraught as Marion discovers Tom and Patrick's affair, threatening to ruin both Tom's career in the Police force and Patrick's freedom.

My Policeman begins 40 years after the end of the affair, with an ailing Patrick (Rupert Everett) moving in with an older Tom (Linus Roache) to be cared for by Marion (Gina McKee). Patrick's presence in the couple's Sussex home brings up memories of their shared past,...

Harry Styles Postpones Los Angeles Concert Due to ‘Band Illness’

Harry Styles’ Nov. 4 concert at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles has been postponed to Sunday, Nov. 6, due to “band illness.”

The venue announced the date change on Instagram, citing “an abundance of caution.” All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled date, and no other dates on Styles’ “Love on Tour” will be affected. Veteran multi-instrumentalist blues rocker Ben Harper is still set to open the show.

The Nov. 4 date lands in the middle of a 15-night run in L.A. Previously, Styles headlined 15 sold-out nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden, an unprecedented feat, as well as six nights in both Chicago and Austin.

Dressing Harry Styles: How ‘My Policeman’ Costume Designer Annie Symons Created Swimsuits and Bobby Outfits for the Star
Image
To belt or not to belt?

That was the question bedeviling Annie Symons, the costume designer of Amazon’s “My Policeman,” when it came to outfitting Harry Styles. In the film, streaming Nov. 4, the pop star plays Tom, a gay constable forced into a loveless marriage in 1950s Brighton. And, you see, it turns out that police officers at the time didn’t wear belts, which was a little bit of a problem for Symons.

“I needed Tom to look young, svelte and handsome and prior to introducing a belt, policemen looked a bit like navy blue tree trunks,” says Symons. “I had raging arguments with the so-called experts, but ultimately I decided to leave all the academics shaking their heads and the belt went on.”

Symons used wool twill from a military fabric supplier to manufacture the uniform. She also brightened the color of the outfit, deviating from what...

'My Policeman' helmer Michael Grandage reveals how Harry Styles was cast for the film
Image
Michael Grandage, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming directorial, ‘My Policeman’, recently spoke about the events that followed after the casting of former ‘One Direction’ member and ‘As It Was’ hitmaker Harry Styles, was announced for the gay romance drama. ‘My Policeman’, sees Harry playing the role of a cop.

Elaborating on the same, Michael said: “When it (the news) started to get out, sales of Bethan Roberts’ novel, on which the film is based, went through the roof. It was absolutely berserk. This poor, lovely author who had just been ambling along minding her own business suddenly became a best-selling writer literally overnight. And I thought, ‘Oh my God, I see, that’s the power of this boy.'”

The film narrates the story of Tom (played by Harry), a policeman in 1950s Britain, who falls in love with a school teacher, Gina McKee (played...

Emma Corrin, David Dawson, and Harry Styles in My Policeman (2022)
My Policeman is a stirring drama featuring a fine ensemble, which contains a little known artist called Harry Styles. To mark the film’s Prime Video launch we had the pleasure in speaking to several of the talented creatives that have brought this profound tale to screen, chatting to Emma Corrin & David Dawson, as well as co-star Gina McKee, and finally filmmaker Michael Grandage.

We speak about the themes in the movie, and given the narrative unfolds across two timelines, in the past and present, we ask whether Corrin and Dawson tried to connect their performances to the actors playing them later in life and naturally as asked McKee the very same question, just the other way around. We also, naturally, discussed the collaboration process with Styles, and what sort of actor he is and his process and diligence on set – while Grandage explains why having a name of that...

Why ‘My Policeman’ Star Emma Corrin Was ‘Scared S—less’ of First Time Working With Harry Styles
Image
Emma Corrin and David Dawson share some intimate moments with Harry Styles in “My Policeman.” To build that chemistry between the actors, director Michael Grandage introduced the three of them through a more musical approach.

In one scene in the movie, Corrin, Dawson and Styles get drunk at a bar and sing a song. “The first time the three of us got together, we were thrown into a sound booth,” Dawson recalled. “We got around the piano and we had to sing for each other, and that was a really clever way of breaking the ice.”

“Like a recording studio,” Corrin added. “Which is Harry’s natural habitat, but we both were scared shitless.”

Corrin, Dawson and Linus Roache sat down for a post-screening Q&a on Friday at New York City’s Ipic Theater.

Set in 1957 Brighton, “My Policeman” follows a complicated love triangle between closeted policeman Tom Burgess...

Emma Corrin opens up on the purpose of intimate scenes in ‘My Policeman’
Image
My Policeman starring Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson is all set to release on Prime Video on November 4. The romantic drama revolves around lifelong friends Tom (Styles), Marion (Corrin), and Patrick (Dawson), and their complex relationships. Set in the 1957 Britain where homosexuality was a taboo, the narrative of a married man falling in love with his best friend has got viewers excited. But the ‘many’ intimate scenes in the film have become the talk of the town.

Emma Corrin, who plays Tom’s wife Marion, recently opened up about the importance of intimate scenes in the film and how they helped to move the narrative forward. “When Tom and Marion are first intimate together, it’s almost heartbreaking in the sense that, although they’re physically close to each other, they’re so far apart. I think it’s one of the first times she realizes there’s...

Harry Styles Inspires Fan Jokes About Little Mermaid Casting Rejection
Image
Harry Styles' music video for his song "Music for a Sushi Restaurant" has inspired fans to joke about the pop star's choice not to play Prince Eric in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The singer, who rose to fame during his time in the boy band One Direction, has started to explore opportunities outside of the music industry. With his leading roles in Olivia Wilde's recent thriller Don't Worry Darling and Michael Grandage's melancholy romantic drama My Policeman, as well as his introduction to the MCU in Chloé Zhao's Eternals, Styles has balanced his singing career with a burgeoning acting one.

The buzz around Styles' turn towards acting was only amplified when rumors circulated that he was in talks to play Price Eric in Rob Marshall's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid alongside fellow singer Halle Bailey as Ariel. While the pop star confirmed...

My Policeman Ending Explained (In Detail)
Image
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for My PolicemanDirected by Michael Grandage, My Policeman, starring Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson, released in theaters ahead of its streaming debut on Prime Video. The film tells the story of Tom and Patrick’s love affair in 1950s England, which is complicated by cruel laws that affected the LGBTQ+ community and the marriage between Tom and Marion, a schoolteacher.

The film is set over the course of 40 years, following the trio into their older age. By the end of My Policeman, which was adapted by Ron Nyswaner from the novel by Bethan Roberts, Marion comes clean about her actions in the 1950s, which sent Patrick to jail and cost Tom his job as a policeman. Marion decides to leave Tom, which pushes Tom to finally acknowledge Patrick after so many years apart. While the film ties up any loose storylines, there...

Gina McKee Interview: My Policeman
Image
My Policeman's captivating love story paints a portrait of LGBTQ+ history in England, as its narrative takes place in both the 1950s and the 1990s. Gina McKee portrays the older version of Emma Corrin's Marion, a schoolteacher who finds herself immersed in a love triangle with her husband Tom (Harry Styles), a closeted gay policeman, and Patrick (David Dawson), a museum curator.

Directed by Michael Grandage, My Policeman is based on the book of the same title written by Bethan Roberts. Roughly 40 years following the turmoil that extinguished Tom and Patrick's romance, McKee's Marion brings Patrick (Rupert Everett), who's recovering from a stroke, to her and Tom's (Linus Roache) home and reignites the pain of their past.

No, Emma Corrin was not going to talk about their “My Policeman” co-star Harry Styles. Perhaps I should have been more forceful in my questioning, but…no. Considering the swirl of gossip around the pop star that shouldn’t be surprising. But, when asked about working with Styles and their other co-star, David Dawson, well, the response instead segued to compliment the film’s director, Michael Grandage.

Emma Corrin & David Dawson Interview: My Policeman
Image
Emma Corrin and David Dawson engage in an intense love triangle with Harry Styles in My Policeman. In the film based on Bethan Roberts' novel, a policeman named Tom (Styles) falls in love with an art museum curator named Patrick (Dawson) following a chance encounter. Almost simultaneously, he begins a romantic relationship with Marion (Corrin), a schoolteacher who has no idea of his affair with Patrick. My Policeman, directed by Michael Grandage, explores the joy and pain of a queer love story set in 1950s England, while the narrative also shifts to the 1990s in which older versions of Marion (Gina McKee), Tom (Linus Roache), and Patrick (Rupert Everett) reckon with their complicated past.

‘My Policeman’ Charts Harry Styles’ Love Triangle. No, Not That One
Image
What is it about the English seaside and suppressed yearning? Is it the bracing winds? The overcast skies? The white cliffs and rocky beaches, as bloodless as the emotional lives of characters who are terrified of their heart’s true desires? The beaches of Brighton in My Policeman are slightly sunnier than those of, say, Dorset in 2020’s Ammonite, but the chilling effect is the same.

To be fair, it’s not all the weather’s fault. Sunshine or fog, a gay man openly expressing his sexuality in 1950s England could land him in prison,...

My Policeman review: Harry Styles is criminally bad in this clunky, ineffective period drama
Image
Dir: Michael Grandage. Starring: Emma Corrin, Harry Styles, David Dawson, Gina McKee, Rupert Everett, Linus Roache. 15, 113 minutes.

In My Policeman, Harry Styles plays an officer of the law in 1950s Brighton – which is ironic, because his acting is criminally bad. He does not have to say anything, but anything he does say will be delivered as though he read it on a piece of paper five minutes previously. After diplomatically average reviews for his performance in Don’t Worry Darling, it’s clear that the lead role in Michael Grandage’s adaptation of Bethan Robert’s novel has left him overexposed as an actor. His presence is leaden. The accent is all over the place. And he doesn’t have the technique to convey whatever ideas he may have had about his character. Let’s hope Olivia Wilde is allowed to bring her special salad dressing to whichever acting prison he is going to.

Harry Styles Says He Felt "Vulnerable" Filming Sex Scenes For "My Policeman"
Image
Harry Styles stars in two movies this year, "Don't Worry Darling" and "My Policeman." The movies are quite different - "Don't Worry Darling" is a thriller about sexism and the patriarchy, while "My Policeman" is a period piece about a gay man (Styles) living a double life with his wife (Emma Corrin) and his lover (David Dawson). But both movies have one thing in common: Styles filmed his very first sex scenes for them. Here's everything Styles and his costars - Florence Pugh, Corrin, and Dawson - have said about portraying intimacy on set.

Styles addressed the subject back in April during an interview on "Capital Breakfast" with Roman Kemp, Sonny Jay, and Sian Welby. Kemp asked him about the two films, saying, "What is the film that I can safely watch with my parents? Because I've heard that it is getting racy."

Laughing, Styles answered, "I don't know that...

Director Michael Grandage Interview: My Policeman
Image
Director Michael Grandage's My Policeman adapts Bethan Roberts' 2012 novel of the same title, telling a captivating love story set in 1950s England. The film stars Harry Styles as Tom, a policeman, David Dawson as Patrick, an art collector, and Emma Corrin as Marion, a schoolteacher. The three find themselves entangled in a love triangle, as Patrick and Tom's secret love affair clashes with the closeted policeman's commitment to Marion.

The majority of the film's events take place at a time when homosexuality was criminalized in the U.K., though the narrative occasionally flashes forward to the 1990s, where viewers see older versions of Marion (Gina McKee), Tom (Linus Roache), and Patrick (Rupert Everett). According to the film's director, My Policeman's poignant and authentic spotlight on LGBTQ+ history serves as a powerful reminder of the past.

‘My Policeman’ Star David Dawson on Sex Scenes With Harry Styles: “We All Just Had a Laugh”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Afair degree of the noise surrounding My Policeman — especially emanating from the hundreds who amassed outside the Princess of Wales Theatre for its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival — may, understandably, be connected to a certain former One Direction star. But much of the critical praise for the Amazon Studios film, in theaters Oct. 21, has been lavished on David Dawson.

The Brit actor plays Patrick, Harry Styles’ museum curator lover in 1960s England, a character who experiences romance as well as tragedy during a time when homosexuality was illegal. While Dawson isn’t exactly a screen newcomer like his musician co-star — the 40-year-old has been a regular onstage and on TV since 2005 with roles in Peaky Blinders and The Last Kingdom — My Policeman does mark his first major film role. But the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) graduate, born in the Northern English town of Widnes,...
