John Carpenter
Prince of Darkness (1987) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
John Carpenter
A new episode of our What Happened to This Horror Movie? series is now available to watch on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel – and you can also check it out in the embed above! In this one, we’re taking a look back at the 1987 John Carpenter film Prince of Darkness (watch it Here), the middle installment in what the director calls his “Apocalypse Trilogy”, even though the three films – the other two being The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness – aren’t directly connected to each other. If you haven’t seen Prince of Darkness yet, watch the video to find out all about it.

Scripted by Carpenter under the pseudonym Martin Quatermass, Prince of Darkness has the following synopsis: Poking around in a church cellar, a priest finds an otherworldly vial filled with slime. Frightened, he brings his discovery to a circle of top scholars and scientists,...

‘Art of Eight Limbs’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Sahajak Boonthanakit, Nicholas Hammond, Ludi Lin, Vithaya Pansringarm, Suradet Dongthaisong | Written by H. Daniel Gross, Ryan C. Jaeger, Louis Spiegler | Directed by Robert Grasmere

No, Art of Eight Limbs isn’t about an octopus that can paint portraits. It’s the latest knockoff of Enter the Dragon, a film that came out fifty-one years ago and still hasn’t been equalled despite a near-endless stream of films utilizing its mix of international espionage, crime, and martial arts tournaments.

Somewhere in Myanmar, a pair of Russian agents arrive at the encampment of General Thiha looking to buy some Vx Nerve Gas. They show they have the cash, and Thiha’s men show them the gas is the real thing by killing the town drunk as they watch. The CIA are quite familiar with The General and aren’t surprised to find out he’s involved. They alert Nick Buckley, one...

Ludi Lin in Art of Eight Limbs (2024)
Mortal Kombat’s Ludi Lin infiltrates a martial arts tournament in the trailer for Art of Eight Limbs, which is now available on Digital
Ludi Lin in Art of Eight Limbs (2024)
Tiger Style Media is partnering with Paramount‘s Republic Pictures for old-school-style martial arts double feature releases. The first two of the four films released this month are Art of Eight Limbs and The Lockdown. Art of Eight Limbs stars Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang in 2021’s Mortal Kombat and the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2. The trailer will likely give viewers some déjà vu as the plot of infiltrating a martial arts tournament led by a criminal comes straight from Bruce Lee’s famous film Enter the Dragon. However, mix it in with some Muay Thai action and it’s a cocktail for some martial arts mayhem.

The official synopsis reads,

“In this action-packed thriller from a producer of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Ludi Lin stars as a CIA data analyst and part-time kickboxer. Sent on a mission to Myanmar, he must infiltrate a martial arts tournament...

Review: John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness (Blu-ray)
John Carpenter seems to be at odds with what he loves and what is expected of him. Early in his career, Carpenter made a science fiction film (Dark Star), a siege picture (Assault on Precinct 13), and then Halloween.

He speaks freely of his love of the science fiction genre, yet seemed to have been pushed into the horror realm because of Halloween, where he has made quite a name for himself. Prince of Darkness, is an interesting blend of elements of sci-fi and horror, with some lofty academic ideas to propel the characters through this macrocosmic drama.

Carpenter favorite Donald Pleasence, simply billed here as “Priest,” finds a key after the death of a colleague, which leads him to an ancient evil trapped in the basement of an old church. In this instance, “evil” has taken the form of a swirling green mass in a glass container. In an attempt to stop an impending,...

Just Buy It! – A Review Of Scream Factory’s Prince Of Darkness Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray
I hope you don’t mind a little self-promotion, because as each one of these new John Carpenter titles is released to Blu-Ray, I’m going to have to remind you that in 2012, we here at The Liberal Dead/Dead Air Podcast recorded a year long John Carpenter Retrospective podcast series, examining in-depth, each of Carpenter’s films, and how each film affected his career as one of the most prolific genre filmmakers in cinematic history. It was a tremendous undertaking, and it would have been helpful if all of these bad ass collector’s edition Blu-Rays were made available for us to research. That’s okay, though. All of us enjoy gaining knowledge the old fashioned way, and now with the release of some of his films on Blu-Ray this year, it gives us an excuse to spread around the old episodes. Despite the fact that it was almost...

Flying Monkeys Attack Syfy This Weekend
This weekend while Disney is hoping you’ll flock in droves to see Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, Syfy will be premiering a new Oz-inspired creature feature that I suspect Sam Raimi would approve of: Flying Monkeys!

Robert Rodriguez’s niece-in-law Electra Avellan (aka one of the babysitter twins from Grindhouse), TV’s “The Invisible Man” Vincent Ventresca, and actor stuntman Alvin Chon star in the Syfy Original Movie about a teenage girl living in Gale, Kansas, who gets a new pet monkey that turns out to be an evil, flying shapeshifter.

Visual effects supervisor Robert Grasmere makes his directorial debut with this new spin on the creatures made famous as the Wicked Witch of the West’s henchmonsters. What, if anything, this Syfy flick has to do with the Land of Oz outside of mean monkeys with wings remains to be seen.

You can see Flying Monkeys this Saturday night,...

Lr's The Blu Room: Salt Deluxe Unrated Blu-Ray
Salt Deluxe Unrated (Blu-Ray)Sony Pictures Home Entertainment2010/Rated PG-13 & Unrated/Running Time 100, 101 & 104 minsList Price $34.95 – Now AvailableSuspension of disbelief can also be called another description of accepting the b.s. thrown at you. In Angelina Jolie's latest vehicle Salt, we're presented with a lot of bull, but rarely does it feel, well you know. Here is a movie that wholeheartedly believes in the nonsense it spins, yet at some point we actually start to believe it ourselves. We've all seen Jolie as an action woman before in those Tomb Raider flicks, the recent Wanted and a certain movie where she met her significant other Brad Pitt. This is perhaps the first time she's played that type of character with a vulnerability and purpose. That doesn't mean she fails to provide her fare share of ass kicking. Jolie, runs, jumps, climbs, rolls, kicks and punches so often in this film...

Salt – Blu-ray Review
The Film:

The tagline for the film was Who is Salt? Let me ask this: what do you think Salt should have been?

But before I answer that question, Salt is very simple – and that’s not a bad thing – an action flick that showcases real stunts over CG and also some of writer Kurt Wimmer’s favorite things: insubordinate employees. Jolie has been severely typecast as an action heroine, from Tomb Raider to Mr. and Mrs. Smith to Wanted, and now this, and while the placement of her character and the film is in a post-Bourne world, Salt is one of her better action roles. It’s her show, even though I really like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Liev Schrieber, they’re given little to do. Why are all Nikolia’s, Russian double-crossing agents? So anyway, as an action movie, it really entertains on basic levels.

At any one twist,...
