Biography

Writer, editor and journalist George Arthur Gray was born in Zane Grey's hometown of Zanesville, Ohio on 15 September, 1886. His parents were William T. and Anna Gray, both Ohio natives. His father worked as a glass blower and manufacturer in Zanesville and later at Syracuse, NY.

After graduating from Syracuse University, Gray worked as a reporter for the Syracuse Herald and later the Cleveland Plain Dealer, where he eventually became city editor. Gray would later move to New York City where he worked on the New York World before joining the staff at Pathé News sometime around 1926. Some five years later he became editor of The Columbian Beacon, house organ of Columbia Pictures. A position he held until his untimely death at age fifty.

George Arthur Gray died at New Rochelle Hospital on 15 October, 1936 following a heart attack. He was survived by his wife, the former Alys May Chute, daughters Catherine, Jane, Mary Janet and Betty Allene. Their only son, Owen Wells Gray, was later lost at sea while serving as a US Navy aviation radioman during the Second World War.
