Horror for some people is comforting like the warmth of the Universal monsters and others. Nothing wrong with that at all as I can respect the past however the other side is the horror that makes you feel uncomfortable.

The Canadian Soska Sisters have once again proven that Canadian storytellers are more than the work of David Cronenberg. In what I think is their best and most dangerous work since the overlooked American Mary (2012) you have the subversive On The Edge (2022) which is actually an exercise in sadism/masochism with loads of devilry, nudity, sex, and kink.

The most uneven of David Cronenberg’s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “Rabid,” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. It’s also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, they’re now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “Rabid” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting.

Rabid, the classic film from horror auteur director David Cronenberg, has been remade by filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska.

Rabid may be a campy, schlocky classic from the dawning era of the horror Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s, but the film, a breakthrough offering from director David Cronenberg – who would move on to genre masterpieces like 1981’s Scanners, 1983 cult classic Videodrome, 1983 Stephen King adaptation The Dead Zone and 1986’s The Fly – maintains a fanbase, notably siblings Jen and Sylvia Soska, who have remade the movie.

Laura Vandervoort stars in the horror remake as Rose, a young woman whose mutilated looks become miraculously restored… albeit with carnivorous consequences.

Back in July, we passed along news that American Mary and Dead Hooker in a Trunk filmmakers Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska's (aka the Twisted Twins) upcoming remake of David Cronenberg's Rabid had begun shooting. In the months since that post, the movie has wrapped and today we have an all-new look at just how disturbing and disgusting the new take on the classic film will be. The new look comes to us via the cover of this month's Rue Morgue, and it features star Laura Vandervoort all kinds of messed up following what is we can only assume to be the "disfiguring accident" mentioned in the movie's official synopsis below.

This isn't an exaggeration: It's been close to 2 years since we first got wind of a remake of David Cronenberg's Rabid, to be helmed by Canadian filmmakers Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska (aka the Twisted Twins). But as Jen explained to me personally not long ago, such is the slogging nature of moviemaking-especially in the Great White North. Still, fans of the dynamic duo can celebrate yesterday's news that Rabid has officially gone before cameras in Toronto, where the movie is being shot. With the way last week’s Legion ended, there was a feeling that this finale couldn’t live up to what we’d already seen. Thankfully, we can trust Legion to deliver where it matters, and that includes a hint of what is to come in season 2.

With Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) now restrained within David’s (Dan Stevens) head, the next big problem is the return of Division 3 and Clark (Hamish Linklater), the interrogator from the first episode. Watching each new episode of Legion is now officially the highlight of the week. Now that we are into the third episode we understand the characters and what they represent, but what happens when we get deeper into David’s (Dan Stevens) thoughts? Prepare for some dark times and sinister characters.

With David’s sister in danger, time is running out for him to understand his powers. Pushing deeper into his psyche, it seems that some things in his mind do not welcome the invasion and are prepared to fight back.

Having already pointed out that this is a more persona type of superhero show where it focuses on the character more than any grandiose events, this episode cements that fact in stone.

While it may seem that Marvel, Netflix and The CW are dominating the televisual superhero landscape at the moment, it looks like Fox are about to fight back. Legion is finally here, and based on the comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, it is offering something… a little different.

David Haller (Dan Stevens) is a troubled man, stuck in a psychiatric hospital with only his friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) for company it seems he may never escape to the real world. That is until he meets Syd (Rachel Keller) who he instantly hits it off with. After an “event” at the hospital occurs, he finds himself in the outside world, with many questions as to where Syd disappeared to and just what the hell happened.

Another superhero TV show, you say? It's true: FX's new marquee series Legion is based on a character from the X-Men universe, and it does come stamped with the Marvel Studios imprimatur. But trust us when we say this is no ordinary capes-and-costumes saga. The latest brainchild of Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, this surreal side trip through Fox's mutantverse is far more reminiscent of the auteurist cinema of Stanley Kubrick or David Lynch than standard comic-book blockbuster fare. Fans expecting quippy one-liners and the usual let's-destroy-a-city-block-for-the-hell-of-it set pieces might be advised to look elsewhere.

From The CW’s crowded superhero stable to Netflix’s Daredevil/Jessica Jones/Luke Cage trio, it seems like every other TV drama these days springs from the panels of a comic book. You’ve surely read that elsewhere, and it’s no exaggeration. The combined gross of the top three movies alone — Monsters University, World War Z, Man of Steel — should hover around $180 million. Now, what remains to be seen is if there’ll be any dollars (whether Canadian or American) left for the dozens of other movies on North American screens. It’s like having huge supermarkets making little neighborhood stores disappear from view. But hey, that seems to be exactly what the moviegoing public wants. According to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University will easily top the domestic box office following a Friday gross around $25-$28 million, in addition to $2.6 million from Thursday evening screenings.

Partly boosted by 3D surcharges, after about four and a quarter days (including $12 million from Thursday evening screenings), Warner Bros.’ $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel has taken in $141.26 million from 4,207 Us/Canada locations, including $12.58 million on Monday as per Box Office Mojo. Every movie has a rumor mill, but when your main character is Superman, it naturally becomes a super rumor mill. As anyone who has been following Zack Snyder's film over the past couple of years knows, rarely has there been a film with so many completely random, crazy and unsubstantiated rumors as "Man of Steel."

Which, of course, just made us even more curious to see the movie, if only to find out: Would all of those rumors turn out to be true? Would any of them turn out to be true?

Henry Cavill Superman: Man of Steel vs. Superman movies of years past [See previous post: "Man of Steel Trailing Original Iron Man in Ticket Sales."] As mentioned in our previous posts, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel grossed an estimated $113.08 million this past weekend, including $9 million from Thursday midnight screenings. Released in late June 2006, Bryan Singer’s $270 million-budgeted Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh as Superman, debuted with $52.53 million, or about $64 million today. Henry Cavill Man of Steel: Relative big-screen newcomer Cavill handicapped by Zack Snyder’s green-screen focus [See previous post: "Man of Steel Review: Superman Movie Sensory Enhanced, Heart Deprived."] Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Diane Lane (as Clark’s adoptive mother) are all Oscar-nominees and/or winners with the ability to thrive under the distracted eye of a director who only cares about lining up the next green-screen shot. Less so in the case of relative newcomer Henry Cavill. The man is an undeniably gorgeous specimen and he looks just right in the beautifully-designed Superman suit by costumers James Acheson and Michael Wilkinson. What doesn’t fit so well is Superman conforming to the Nolan-inspired, Warner Bros.-approved mold of dark, conflicted superhero that does neither Cavill nor Superman any favors. According to VancouverFilm.Net, the character played by actor Mackenzie Gray in director Zack Snyder's BC-filmed 'Superman' movie, is not 'Lex Luthor' or 'Brainiac', but another notoriously well-known DC Comics' super-villain :

Mackenzie Gray plays the character 'Jax--Ur' a rogue scientist, minion of 'General Zod' and the first super-villain to be projected into the prison 'Phantom Zone'.

'Jax-Ur' first appeared in DC's "Adventure Comics" #289 (1961) created by Otto Binder and George Papp.

An amoral and criminally deviant scientist on planet Krypton, Jax-Ur was imprisoned in the 'Phantom Zone' for destroying 'Wegthor', an inhabited moon of Krypton, while experimenting with a nuclear warhead-equipped rocket. His sentence for mass murder was imprisonment for eternity.

Jax-Ur was often plotting against Superman with fellow Phantom Zone inmates 'General Zod' and 'Faora'. 

But after learning that Krypton was actually destroyed by a super-villain named 'Black Zero', Jax-Ur and the Man Of Steel become allies...

Mackenzie Gray has been rumoured to be playing Jax-Ur in Man of Steel.

The actor's role in Zack Snyder's Superman film, which has so far remained a mystery, has been claimed to be that of the Kryptonian scientist, reports ComicBook.com.

Gray has been rumoured to be playing Lex Luthor - whom he portrayed a clone of in Smallville - or the alien villain Brainiac.

Jax-Ur has had various portrayals in comics, usually as a rebel scientist allied to General Zod.

Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne and Antje Traue will also appear in the Warner Bros superhero film.

While actor Henry Cavill worked his ass off getting into incredible shape for Zack Snyder's upcoming "Man of Steel," all superhero suits used in movies have some level of careful layering, padding and sculpting.

This is done to both showcase the already impressive physique underneath, and to protect the actor during filming of the project's rough and tumble action scenes.

Actor Mackenzie Gray, whose role in the film is 'top secret' though has been speculated to be playing Lex Luthor, has spoken with Jtm Games and revealed some details about the Superman costume:

"Amount of detail on Superman is unbelievable. Superman’s costume, is a three-layer costume; there’s a body-skin layer and then there’s a muscle layer that was molded to Henry’s muscles – it’s a silver, metallic rubber – and then over that is a mesh skin so whenever he turns into light it looks like he’s made of steel.
