The voting is closed. The results are in. And now we know exactly which Law & Order characters you’d want in your ideal mix of fictional police officers and lawyers. Dun-dun!

Law & Order Should Bring These 3 Characters Back as Guest Stars
Image
It’s always a pleasant surprise when one of our favorites from the past returns on Law & Order.

We’ve seen so many great actors and characters come and go from the main show and its spinoffs, and every so often, we get to see one back in action for at least one episode.

Many times it’s just for a friendly visit, a casual consultation, or to provide some necessary information, and other times they’re more involved in the case.

(NBC/Screenshot)

There are many former characters that fans want to see return for a season, but I’d like to see these three specifically from the Law & Order franchise pop up again in a future episode.

Let’s Revisit Defense Attorney Paul Robinette

A serious blast from the past would be Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks) returning to the show after his hiatus.

I enjoyed Ada...

Why NBC Canceled The Irrational After Two Seasons
Image
Jesse L. Martin is a treasure. I was incredibly fortunate to see him originate the role of Tom Collins on Broadway in the legendary 1996 production of "Rent" (after it transferred from its first home at the New York Theatre Workshop), and I walked out of that performance excited to see what he'd do next. That wound up being "Law & Order," where Martin put in 198 episodes of work as Detective Ed Green. This was a decade-long assignment that, for the most part, took him off the film and theater market. Given how extraordinarily well network television pays if you're a main cast member, you can't begrudge a working actor for prioritizing a regular paycheck.

As an occasional "Law & Order" viewer, Martin has only ever been terrific as Green. But as the years have passed, you can't help but get greedy as a viewer and wonder why he doesn't challenge himself more often.

Everyone Forgets The Flash Star Who Quit ‘Law & Order’ After 198 Episodes to Return to Broadway
Image
Initially becoming notable for his work on Broadway, especially in the role of Tom Collins in Rent, Jesse L. Martin later garnered recognition for Law & Order. Given his no-nonsense approach to the stint as Detective Ed Green, Martin, who was incorporated in the wake of Benjamin Bratt’s exit from the procedural drama, became a mainstay during his 10-year-long stint.

But despite his success in NYPD’s 27th Precinct, after a years-long commitment to the IP, the actor finally called it quits to go back to his roots.

Although Law & Order did propel Martin’s career to the next level, and The Flash star proved to be an immaculate replacement for Detective Rey Curtis, in season 18, the actor finally opted to call it quits.

‘The Irrational’: Ron Canada on Playing Alec’s Father, ‘Law & Order’ Gift From Jesse L. Martin
Image
The Irrational reunites Jesse L. Martin and Ron Canada in the January 28 episode, “Ghost Ship,” with the latter coming in to play the former’s father. But they first worked together back in a 2008 episode of Law & Order. “First of all, everyone should know that Jesse is a wonderful actor and has achieved so much as you know, in Law & Order and The Flash. But before then, as a member of the original cast of Rent. He’s a gifted artist and a professional,” Canada tells TV Insider. “Jesse and I have an episode of Law & Order in common, ‘Bottomless,’ and it’s found some favor among Law & Order fans. Jesse and I worked together quite a bit.” “One of my possessions given to ...

The Irrational, Svu, Found: NBC Is Centering Trauma Survivors In A Refreshing and Original New Trend
Image
NBC is centering trauma survivors in its primetime lineup.

Law & Order: Svu has been about empowering survivors to rebuild their lives for the past 26 years.

Now, two other shows join it in its mission, and better yet, both Found and The Irrational feature Black survivors — a badly underrepresented demographic.

(NBC/Sergei Bachlakov, NBC/MIchele K Short, NBC/Matt Miller) Law & Order: Svu Started An Important Trend 26 Years Ago

For a long time, Law & Order: Svu was a beacon of light in a dark TV landscape.

On most shows, trauma was a plot point and one that wasn’t portrayed particularly accurately.

People with Ptsd were often depicted as violent or unstable and sometimes given symptoms that weren’t accurate.

The Irrational Could Change Crime Procedurals Forever
Image
Audiences have been awaiting Jesse L. Martin's return to criminal justice procedural shows, and he doesn't disappoint in NBC's The Irrational. The Irrational looks at the unreliability of memory and how that impacts criminal investigations. While Jesse L. Martin's character isn't anything like Law & Order's Ed Green, The Irrational will satisfy the same need in viewers.

When NBC's new police procedural, The Irrational, begins, Professor Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) is crouched behind a police car, attempting to negotiate with a man holding a woman and her baby hostage. What audiences learn from him immediately, through the voiceover and his negotiation tactics, is that people are irrational, which often leads them to make decisions that seem bizarre, even to them. This premise drives the show, which is centered around Mercer, his students and research assistants, and the women in his life, namely his sister and his ex-wife.

Police procedurals have a consistent format,...

The Irrational Season 2 Cast and Character Guide
The Irrational (2023)
Good news: NBC's The Irrational will return for Season 2 in the fall of 2024. Even better, most of the cast will be returning.

The Jesse L. Martin-led police procedural stands out in a sea of crime dramas because it focuses on a behavioral scientist who moonlights as an FBI consultant. It is fun, entertaining, and easy to follow.

We've got you covered if you're playing catch-up now that the season has ended.

Our The Irrational Season 2 cast and character guide covers everything you need to know about the characters before you begin this unique series.

How The Irrational Is Different From Other Shows

The Irrational is not purely a police procedural.

Since the main character is a behavioral scientist, neuroscientific principles often come into play when solving each case.

It's not quite as gimmicky as Elsbeth, where the lead detective's quirkiness is the backbone of the show, but it...

‘The Irrational’ Review: Jesse L. Martin Captivates in NBC’s Latest Run-of-the-Mill Procedural
Tony Goldwyn, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, and Odelya Halevi in Law & Order (1990)
Like the notion that it’s always 5 p.m. somewhere, there’s nearly always a vintage “Law & Order” airing with do-right Detective Ed Green, played by Jesse L. Martin. So when a new network series arrives with Martin in the lead role, it raises my hopes for must-see TV..

My irrational self wanted to love this intelligent, well-crafted show — but my rational side was beset by doubts, which the first three episodes available for review failed to dispel.

“The Irrational” stars Martin as Alec Mercer, a world-famous behavioral scientist who straddles between academia and more hands-on pursuits. He is a science guy, but not Bill Nye. The show’s title refers to his belief that even in man’s irrational behavior there are detectable motifs. His preternatural ability to discern these patterns make him indispensable in FBI investigations, such as when they have a kidnapper with a gun holding...

‘The Irrational’: Why Jesse L. Martin’s Return to NBC Is More Than a Whodunit
Image
For a show about why people make bad decisions, NBC has made the best one by bringing Jesse L. Martin back to the network. Having just wrapped his run as The Flash’s dutiful father figure Det. Joe West, the fan favorite who spent nine seasons as Law & Order’s NYPD detective Ed Green is returning to the procedural game, and the crafty new drama The Irrational finally lets Martin shine as a leading man. He “is such a talented actor and exudes an easy charm,” raves NBC’s president of scripted content Lisa Katz. “We have always wanted to bring Jesse back to NBC and were just waiting for the right vehicle and the right time.” “It feels really great to be back on NBC after all these years,” the chronically good-natured Martin said while filming behind-the-scenes content for the crime thriller, before the actors’ strike. “And the...

Reuniting?
S. Epatha Merkerson
New York -- It's not quite a "Law & Order" reunion, but S. Epatha Merkerson will be teaming up again with former co-star Jesse L. Martin.

Merkerson says she's been cast to play Martin's mother in the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic "Sexual Healing." Her manager Bob McGowan says production begins in Luxembourg in late March.

Merkerson played Lt. Anita Van Buren on "Law & Order" from 1991 until it ended in 2010. Martin played Detective Ed Green from 1999 to 2008.

The film focuses on Gaye in the 1980s when he battled drug abuse and depression.

Merkerson spoke Monday while promoting NBC's drama "Deception," in which she plays the mother of show's lead character Johanna. She's also in the Tyler Perry-produced film comedy "We The Peeples" due out in May.

Law & Order's Jesse L. Martin Replaces Lenny Kravitz For Marvin Gaye Biopic
Even though a two-hour biopic about Marvin Gaye.s life probably wouldn.t hold a soul-and-cocaine-fueled candle to the roller coaster that was Gaye.s private life, it.s still a highly anticipated project that has been through all sorts of developmental hell. But like the man says, let.s get together and get our hopes up once again. Deadline is reporting through the grapevine that Jesse L. Martin will suavely step into the role of Gaye in Sexual Healing, to be directed by Julien Temple, well-known for a career full of documentaries. Martin is best known for his work as Det. Ed Green on Law & Order, though he.s recently appeared in Todd Graff.s musical Joyful Noise with Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, as well as the Chris Evans-led drama Puncture. He.d actually been attached to the project back in 2008, when James Gandolfini was producing. Sadly...

The Vine: Orbach turning in 'L&O' badge?
Is it time for the Law & Order troops to throw a goodbye party for Briscoe? Sources say Law & Order veteran Jerry Orbach will depart Dick Wolf's long-running crime drama at the end of the season after 12 years on the beat as Detective Lennie Briscoe. However, Orbach may still remain in business with Wolf with a role on the upcoming fourth installment of the franchise: Law & Order: Trial by Jury. As for the flagship series, there is no word yet about a replacement for Orbach, but one scenario involves his character's partner, Detective Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin), being promoted. "Law & Order has a 15-year track record of Dick Wolf never commenting on casting changes during the season," a spokesman for the show said Thursday. Indeed, Law & Order has famously weathered many cast changes since it bowed in 1990. At present, Orbach is the longest-serving member of the current Law & Order cast members, having signed on during the show's third season in 1992.
