Every fictional detective written in the last 100 years has a little bit of Sherlock Holmes in them. But procedural dramedy series "Monk" is patterned very explicitly after "Sherlock Holmes," down to its ensemble cast. The lynchpin of that cast is Adrian Monk, a San Francisco detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd) and extreme germaphobia.
Though Monk shares Holmes' power of observation, it's not a perfect comparison. Monk has a tragic backstory that Holmes didn't. Similarly, Holmes is arrogant while Monk is awkward. And whereas Holmes only has Dr. John Watson by his side, Monk had two different sidekicks.
In the first two-and-a-half seasons, Monk's personal assistant/nurse/Watson is Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), a no-bs Jersey gal. Then, after "Monk" season 3, episode 9, "Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine," Sharona abruptly departs, moving back to New Jersey and remarrying her ex-husband. In the following episode, "Mr. Monk and the Red Herring," Monk meets...

Back when flip phones ruled and crime shows were everywhere, Monk stood out like a sore thumb, one that had to be washed 27 times. Adrian Monk wasn’t your typical detective. He was a genius with germ issues, a human magnifying glass with 312 phobias, and the reason millions of us developed an odd respect for hand wipes. Tony Shalhoub made Monk iconic, but the rest of the gang, Natalie, Stottlemeyer, Randy, and even Sharona, brought their own brand of chaos, charm, and comedy.
For eight glorious seasons, they solved murders, wrestled personal baggage, and somehow made Ocd oddly heartwarming. After the show wrapped in 2009, fans waited years for a comeback. Then boom, 2023’s Mr. Monk’s Last Case dropped like a nostalgic mic, reuniting the core crew. It reminded us just how much we missed this quirky crime-solving family. Now it’s 2025, and we’re snooping around like Monk himself...

For eight seasons, "Monk" struck that perfect balance between hard-cracking detective work and comedy. Police procedurals were a dime a dozen in the early 2000s, but the thing to set this one apart from its contemporaries was the fact the titular Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) dealt with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This fueled his 312 phobias, which occasionally got in the way of him solving cases, but they also allowed him to view the world in a unique way that would help him solve various crimes.
"Monk" ended in 2009, but fans got one last fix thanks to 2023's made-for-Peacock movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case," which /Film called "an overdue reunion" with much of the central cast reprising their roles. But it's not like the cast was kept in stasis for 13 years between the show's ending and the reunion. Many of them went on to other things, filling out their filmographies with myriad other projects.

Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie has an important reason for being darker than the original television series. In addition to being a procedural television show, Monk was both a comedy and a drama. The premise of a man with debilitating phobias who could never solve his wife's murder is inherently tragic. At the same time, these phobias lead to many comedic scenarios and interactions throughout Monk's best episodes, including the germaphobia and fear of flying that Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) has.
There is a deeply emotional undercurrent to Monk's story, especially when the mystery of what happened to Monk's wife, Trudy (Melora Hardin) comes to the forefront, but there is a lightness to the overall series as well. Even many of Monk's most heartbreaking episodes find ways to incorporate humor. Beyond Monk, other characters like Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) and Monk's rival,...

A Monk guest star gave the series its funniest version of "here's what happened." Every Monk episode had its own mystery to solve and would end with Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) explaining how he solved the mystery with a monologue beginning with the phrase "here's what happened." This was a tradition upheld throughout Monk's eight-season run from 2002-2009 and was also included in the ending of Mr. Monk's Last Case, the movie sequel that was released on Peacock in 2023.
While Monk was always at the center of these explanations, each episode's guest stars often played a role in them as well. There was no shortage of famous guest stars on Monk, including Willie Nelson, Jason Alexander, Sarah Silverman, Howie Mandel, Stanley Tucci, Jon Favreau, and Danny Trejo. However, it was another famous guest star who made the series' most memorable and most creative "here's what happened" scene come to fruition.

The Rookie is a mix of police procedural and personal drama about a man getting a second chance in life, and it is also grown into a true ensemble, with the romance between Chen (Mellissa O'Neil) and Bradford (Eric Winter) becoming a major part of fan interest as the series has continued through six seasons. If fans just can't get enough, below are shows like The Rookie to scratch that itch.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on December 12, 2024: The Rookie is officially getting a seventh season, but fans will have to wait for the next installment of the beloved Nathan Fillion police series.

Monk, an early-2000s police procedural dramedy, brought viewers eight beloved seasons of mysteries, tears, laughs, and quirky antics. The show follows the life of former detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), a brilliant San Francisco police consultant who lives with obsessive-compulsive disorder and is struggling to cope with his day-to-day life after his wife Trudy Monk is killed.
It is no surprise that the Monk series is pure comedic genius given the creator (Andy Breckman)’s years of experience as a Saturday Night Live sketch writer. Ted Levine, Jason Gray-Stanford, Bitty Schram, and Traylor Howard make up the supporting cast of this iconic comedy crime drama, and the show takes a beautifully compassionate approach to Adrian’s Ocd without sacrificing the ability to recognize Adrian's frequently humorous nature. Some of the best Monk episodes stem from Mr. Monk’s endearing mannerisms.

Bitty Schram's character, Sharona Fleming, was one of the most important characters in Monk, yet she exited the series in season 3. Sharona was a nurse and the first personal assistant to Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub). While Monk was Sharona's employer, she genuinely cared for him, and was fully aware of all his phobias and his eccentricities. At the same time, Sharona was unafraid to speak bluntly to Monk and refused to infantilize him despite the many things that make him uncomfortable.
Sharona was often a highlight of Monk's best episodes because of her dynamic with the titular detective. She was also a single mother raising a son, Benjy (Kane Ritchotte). Monk even became a father figure for Benjy, including an episode where he tells Benjy that he did not need to be his father to believe or to be proud of him. With Sharona being a fixture of the procedural series,...

Actress Bitty Schram played Adrian Monk’s annoyed yet loving nurse in the procedural comedy Monk. For almost three seasons, Schram put up with Monk’s obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression from his wife’s death while also helping him out with his cases. However, Schram left midway through the third season.
Many reasons have been given for Schram’s exit. The actress had great chemistry with Tony Shalhoub’s Adrian Monk and the initial seasons had many memorable episodes where the two had some impressive banter. However, the character was revealed to have re-married her ex and moved to New Jersey, introducing a new assistant named Natalie Teeger.

There has been a trend in crime shows to become more complex lately, but sometimes simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Ever since the rise of shows like True Detective, crime TV has been shifting away from the old cable formula of easily-digestible shows that follow a reliable formula. While these newer, "prestige" dramas are brilliant in their own ways, many fans find themselves searching for a simpler approach.
Crime procedurals and crime comedies tend to be the richest sources of these types of shows. When a show has over 20 episodes per season, rather than the 10 or fewer which are becoming more common, it helps to have a dependable framework. While this can make the shows slightly more predictable, this predictability isn't necessarily a bad thing. There's a huge audience of people who want to watch their favorite TV detective solving a new case every week.

“We ended on such a high note, we were very proud of the final two episodes and how the series wrapped up,” reflects Tony Shalhoub on the emotions that were involved in revisiting a character he had bid farewell to so perfectly 15 years ago. For eight seasons, the Emmy Award winner portrayed detective Adrian Monk on the series “Monk,” a character who returns in the Peacock original film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” The star – who also serves as executive producer – says the whole team wanted to “match that or outdo what we did at the end” of the show, which felt like a “daunting proposition.” Watch our exclusive video interview.

“Monk” is the epitome of the classic blue-sky show. Its mysteries are gripping, but the show’s characters are inviting — always giving viewers a reason to laugh. That’s still the case with Peacock’s reunion movie “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” And yet, there’s something surprisingly dark about the state of obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk when we catch up with him, post-pandemic.
“At this point we find Monk is really in a in a dark, dark place,” star Tony Shalhoub tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “He’s in a deep hole. His team is not really close by and he’s kind of lost his purpose. And (exec producer) Andy (Breckman) presented this idea that Monk was entertaining thoughts of suicide. It hit us hard in the beginning. We thought, ‘geez, we’ve gone dark in the show before, but not this dark!'”

Per Deadline, Shalhoub and Monk creator Andy Breckman spoke about Mr. Monk's Last Case. Shalhoub commented on how he was concerned initially with revisiting the role, addressing how important it was for the reunion film to feel bigger than an ordinary episode of Monk. Fortunately, Shalhoub was happy with the script, and he proceeded to slip back into the character just fine when it came time to start filming.

After Monk ended its run on USA in 2009, creator Andy Breckman never stopped taking notes and coming up with movie ideas for Tony Shalhoub’s alter-ego. But nothing ever quite worked out, recalls Breckman on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television — that is, until the pandemic “nudged things along for us.”
That’s when Shalhoub and his wife Brooke Adams made a four-minute film that depicted Monk during the lockdown, which helped to get the ball rolling for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. The flick, which dropped in December on Peacock, follows the San Francisco-based detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder returning to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly.
“At first it sounded kind of risky,” Shalhoub said. “We wanted to raise the stakes, we did not just want to come back with episode 126. We wanted this to be more special. We wanted...

Mr. Monk's Last Case Interview: Tony Shalhoub & Creator Andy Breckman On Reviving Monk & Darker Tone
Mr. Monk's Last Case picks up 14 years after the series finale with Monk drawn back into investigating when his stepdaughter's fiancée dies before their wedding. The movie brings back the beloved cast members but ventures into a darker and more emotional tone than the show. Tony Shalhoub found it daunting at first to revisit Monk's character, but quickly got back into the rhythm of it.
Adrian Monk is back with one of his most personal cases yet in Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie. The Peacock movie picks up 14 years after the series finale, with the titular private detective having retired and focused on writing a book about his cases, though his deal falls through. As he grapples with what to do with his life, he's drawn back into investigating when his stepdaughter's fiancée dies just before their wedding.

Fans of Monk have reunited with their favorite sleuth thanks to the Peacock movie Mr. Monk's Last Case. The film brings back all of the TV show's core cast for a new mystery written by series creator Andy Breckman. But it's not a straightforward reunion project; it's a drama more than a comedy, and very timely as it digs into Adrian Monk's life during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cbr spoke with Breckman and star/producer Tony Shalhoub about why they returned to Monk, and why it was important to them that the pandemic was a prominent part of Mr. Monk's Last Case. They also discussed the cast member they coaxed out of retirement, the addition of James Purefoy as Monk's latest nemesis, and their favorite callbacks to the TV series.

There is a good case to be made for tuning into Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie on Peacock. For starters, it’s great, and thoroughly fun, in fact. Mr. Monk has certainly been missed in his time off-screen.
The 90-minute reboot film of the popular USA Network series Monk (2002-2009) finds Emmy-winner Tony Shalhoub returning as the titular germophobe and former homicide detective, who’s dragged into another crime-solving caper. Beyond the allure of Shalhoub, who can do no wrong in our book, the outing is a pure delight. In an era packed with countless revisits to previously established IPs in an attempt to generate a new or greater fan base, Mr. Monk’s Last Case hits its creative mark from beginning to end.
Created and written by Andy Breckman, the endeavor is great viewing for the entire family and anybody who loves crime-solving procedurals, and well, Tony Shalhoub or Adrian Monk.

What’s Good: The humor remains fantastic, and the addition of a darker tone makes the film quite unique.
What’s Bad: The mystery itself is a boring one for sure, not the best one in the series.
Loo Break: Clocking 90 minutes, the movie goes by quite fast, so you probably won’t have the need for a break.
Watch or Not?: If you’re a fan of the old series or maybe a fan of Shalhoud after his work in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, this is a must-watch.

Tony Shalhoub shines in his long-awaited return as Adrian Monk, but Mr. Monk's Last Case falls short of representing the quintessential character fans love and deserve. The villain, Rick Eden, is poorly written and lacks the complexity needed to match wits with Monk, making him an underwhelming antagonist. The movie misses opportunities to explore interesting ideas, such as Monk's interactions with the Covid-19 world, and fails to deliver a satisfying reunion for the beloved cast of characters.

The legal drama “Suits” may have been the show of the summer, but another beloved USA property is on top now.
Tony Shalhoub reprises his Emmy-winning role of Adrian Monk in “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie,” a Peacock original that sees the ol’ detective with obsessive compulsive disorder return for one last case (or is it?) in the age of Covid. In the 90-minute film, which is now streaming, Monk is preparing for his stepdaughter Molly’s (Caitlin McGee) upcoming nuptials when he finds himself pulled into an investigation involving a charismatic billionaire with his eyes set on space (James Purefoy).
During its original run from 2002 to 2009, “Monk” was a critically acclaimed comedy and an Emmy mainstay, taking home eight awards in all. When Monk premiered in 2002, the series was unique in many ways -- and the Peacock movie Mr. Monk's Last Case is able to capture almost all of them. But television has changed a lot since TV viewers met Adrian Monk, and where the movie falls flat is in trying to update the classic world of Monk for a 2020s audience. Mr. Monk's Last Case gives fans everything they've been waiting for, but in a much more self-conscious package.
It's no surprise that Peacock got around to making a Monk movie. Series creator Andy Breckman had tried to make one in 2012. The "Monk in Quarantine" short that premiered on Peacock Presents: The At-Home Variety Show Featuring Seth MacFarlane was universally well-received in 2020, and Peacock is home to two of the three Psych movies. Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

More than 13 years ago, the world said goodbye to Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) after eight seasons on the USA Network. Monk is a genius detective riddled with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and dozens of phobias. And yet, these very qualities make him such an astute investigator — "It's a gift and a curse." Now, fans get one more sample of Monk's gift with a follow-up movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case." The film is not a "legacy sequel" as is the trend these days, but a classical post-series TV reunion movie. It's not just the main cast that returns either, but "Monk" co-creators Andy Breckmann and David Hoberman and prolific series director Randy Zisk. The reunion feels complete because of it, since their presence means the storytelling of "Mr. Monk's Last Case" feels like, well, "Monk."

At the height of the pandemic lockdown, fans of USA’s 2002–09 hit Monk asked series creator Andy Breckman how his lovable and germaphobic private homicide investigator Adrian Monk would cope during Covid. Breckman responded with a four-minute featurette. The clip reunited the show’s star, multiple Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub, with Monk’s posse: his assistant Natalie (Traylor Howard) and cops Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) and Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine). Peacock loved it, and 14 years after the final episode, the much-missed character returns in Breckman and executive producer David Hoberman’s original film, Monk’s Last Case. (Credit: Steve Wilkie/Peacock ) Why last? “In the movie, Monk has a pretty serious existential crisis,” says Breckman. “We wanted to make clear that the stakes were as high as they could be for the character.” Greatly depressed during the pandemic and obsessively missing his late wife Trudy, he hid in his house,...
