The Full Timeline Of The Paranormal Activity Movies Explained
Image
Oren Pelis supernatural found-footage horror film Paranormal Activity spawned a franchise that included seven movies, so the Paranormal Activity timeline needs some explaining. The films follow the history of two sisters named Katie and Kristi who are tormented by a demonic entity, "Toby." As the franchise expanded with sequels, prequels, and parallel installments, the exact timeline of events remains complicated. The franchise shares a basic premise: supernatural occurrences that are caught "found-footage" such as security systems, webcams, and more.

The 2021 installment Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin was a soft reboot since it is the first installment in the franchise to feature a new demonic entity: Asmodeus, based on the real-life Abrahamic dogma. The next title in the franchise, The Other Side, returned to Paranormal Activity's core story, centering on "Toby" once again and continuing the story from where Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension left off. The installments aren't released chronologically,...

How To Watch The Paranormal Activity Movies In Order
Image
This post contains spoilers for the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.

When "Paranormal Activity" was first released in 2007, it was a small-scale, indie found-footage endeavor spearheaded by Oren Peli, shot with an initial budget of around $15,000. After the feature made some waves and was acquired by Paramount, the trajectory of this horror offering, which was initially meant as a standalone entry, changed forever. Now armed with a new alternate ending, "Paranormal Activity" had an unbelievably lucrative run at the box office, and this overwhelming success went on to spawn a highly profitable franchise with stories that sported interconnected timelines and a shared found footage convention. Although the first few entries feel fresh and effective, a case of franchise fatigue can be felt over time, especially with the most recent soft reboot, "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin."

It is perfectly okay to watch the "Paranormal Activity" films (check out our ranking of them here) according to release order,...

10 Sequels That Are Way Better Than They Should Have Been
Image
Sometimes sequels outdo their predecessors, but there is also the occasional surprise sequel that is a bigger hit than anyone ever anticipated. Making a successful follow-up to a popular movie often as hard as the original was in the first place. Still, with the right story in place and a proper understanding of what made the original connect, a sequel is fully capable of being worthy of its predecessor or even outdoing it.

Not all beloved sequels are expected to be popular or successful, though. Sometimes, a sequel comes along that either has little buzz going for it, is outright expected to fail, or ends up surpassing even the built-in expectations it carries. However, these kinds of sequels are the most fun as they often come with a the degree of surprise and enduring impact.

January Jones Slams Paid Virtual Auditions as ‘Criminal’ and ‘Pathetic’
Image
January Jones is joining the debate over self-tape audition practices in Hollywood.

The “Mad Men” alum took to her Instagram Stories to call out fees to audition and the issue of sending in self-tapes as opposed to in-person readings. “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person,” Jones wrote on Instagram (via Variety). “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic.”

She continued, “I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for an...

Casting Directors Sound Off On Self-Tape Controversy: “We Shouldn’t Be Taking Money From Actors”
Ever Carradine
Pent-up frustration by actors over the way audition process has evolved — or devolved — during the pandemic erupted this week when actors Ever Carradine, Merrin Dungey and Sprague Grayden slammed an ad by Betty Mae Casting offering paid self-taping services for non-Betty Mae projects. Their comments launched a heated discussion about the wide use of self-tapes, which have replaced the vast majority of in-person auditions over the last three years.

Because the conversation was triggered by the ad from Betty Mae, the company of well known casting director Mary Vernieu, with SAG-AFTRA calling casting offices charging for audition tapes “an optical and ethical disaster,” the society of Hollywood casting directors have found themselves in the eye of the storm.

SAG-AFTRA Scolds Casting Offices For Charging For Audition Tapes: “It Is An Optical And Ethical Disaster”
Image
Exclusive: After several actresses expressed frustration on Twitter this week about the cost of self-tape auditions, SAG-AFTRA weighed in Friday lambasting casting offices for cashing in on the process by offering rental facilities for actors.

“Casting offices charging actors for the creation and production of audition tapes is taking our industry in the wrong direction,” according to a statement. “It is an optical and ethical disaster. Actors are already faced with undue financial pressures in their pursuit of work. Casting offices running production and audition services runs counter to the principles of fairness and equity in our industry and the practice should be discouraged.”

Actresses Like Ever Carradine, Merrin Dungey & Sprague Grayden Lament Cost Of Audition Tapes; “We’re Never Ever Getting Back In The Room”
Image
Updated: Several actresses like Ever Carradine (The Handmaid’s Tale), Merrin Dungey (Big Little Lies) and Sprague Grayden (Hightown) turned to Twitter this week to express frustration over the pandemic-era trend of (costly) tape auditions and whether in-person tryouts are truly a thing of the past.

Carradine began her social media rant by noting how an ad popped up on her Instagram account for a “respected casting director’s office offering self tape opportunities for a fee. If we can go to casting and tape, can’t we just go to casting and actually read without paying $50 an audition?”

When someone asked if actors now have to pay for an audition, Carradine replied, “No, but you have to pay a facility to tape and read with you. In the before covid times, this was a last resort and most auditions happened in person in the room with casting, producers and the director.

Romany Malco, Grace Park, James Roday Rodriguez, Stephanie Szostak, David Giuntoli, Christina Moses, Allison Miller, and Floriana Lima in A Million Little Things (2018)
For a family drama, A Million Little Things has quite a few stashes of unaccounted-for drugs, doesn’t it?

Another bit of illicit material shows up in Thursday’s episode, when Eddie finds a vial of cocaine in his home recording studio and immediately assumes that his visiting sister Lindsay isn’t as sober as she claims to be. On a related topic: What about the ownership of those loose joints Gary found in the bottom of Sophie’s sleeping bag a few weeks back? It seems like we get an answer, albeit a fleeting and context-free one, in this episode.

Romany Malco, Grace Park, James Roday Rodriguez, Stephanie Szostak, David Giuntoli, Christina Moses, Allison Miller, and Floriana Lima in A Million Little Things (2018)
The family reunion that takes place on this week’s A Million Little Things will be less “barbecues and matching T-shirts” and more “guarded smiles and tentative hopes for the best,” cast member David Giuntoli previews.

Because when Eddie’s sister Lindsay shows up in Thursday’s episode (ABC, 10/9c) after a years-long absence, she very well might threaten his hard-won sobriety — and therefore the stability of his family.

‘What Just Happened??!’ Host Fred Savage Wants His Real Aftershow to Turn Its Fake Show Into a Real Show
Fred Savage at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
Fred Savage makes his talk-show host debut Sunday on Fox’s “What Just Happened??! With Fred Savage” — a very real aftershow based on a very not real sci-fi series called “The Flare.” Well, not real for now, at least, as the “Wonder Years” alum is thinking maybe his show could help its fake lead-in get the green light.

“I’ll be honest, we’re hoping that it’s not so fake,” Savage — who hosts, co-created and executive produces “What Just Happened??!” — told TheWrap. “I mean, ‘The Flare’ does exist — just a scene at a time. The books are obviously completely made up, but the show itself, like, we have a real cast, a real director, and I think it’s a good show.”

“The Flare” is based on fictional author Tj Whitford’s sci-fi book series, “The Moon is the Sun at Night,” which has been a favorite of Savage’s since childhood.

Rob Lowe in The Grinder (2015)
Rob Lowe will be the first guest on Fox’s upcoming parody after-show “What Just Happened??! with Fred Savage,” which will reunite the stars of the previously-canceled “The Grinder.”

Framed to be a talk show to discuss the events after Fox’s made-up sci-fi drama, “The Flare,” “What Just Happened??! with Fred Savage” will invite special guests like Lowe to analyze what took place on the fictional show’s latest episode (akin to AMC’s “Talking Dead and “Talking Saul”), and will include as set visits to “The Flare,” interviews with the “cast,” and fan discussions.

Kevin Zegers (“Dirty John”), Guillermo Diaz (“Scandal”) and Shiri Appleby (“UnReal”) are among those tapped to play the “cast” of “The Flare.”

'The Following' scares up Season 3 hints at Comic-Con: Live-Blog
Kevin Bacon
It's Comic-Con Sunday. Woo! On Saturday, I live-blogged Wbtv's Night of DC Entertainment, "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries." Sunday is TV Day in Hall H and I'll be live-blogging panels for "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Strain." But first? Kevin Williamson and Kevin Bacon return to see if people are actually interested in what's in store for Season 3 of "The Following"...  Follow along... [See what I did there?] 11:13 a.m. The line to get into Hall H is, at the most, a couple hundred people and I'm guessing a couple thousand "Supernatural" fans departed. 11:15 a.m. Off we go! Our panel: Sam Underwood, Marcos Siega, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Williamson, Jennifer Johnson, Shawn Ashmore and Jessica Stroup. 11:18 a.m. They shot two endings last season, at least allegedly. With teases like this, I never know who's joking and which "special" endings are real. It begins as last season did with Kevin Bacon...

The Following, 2.14, “Silence”: Interesting episode raises questions for season finale
The Following, Season 2, Episode 14, “Silence”

Written by Scott Reynolds

Directed by Steve Shill

Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox

“What do you think death is?”

“Silence”

Last week’s episode of The Following, “The Reaping”, was perhaps the best hour of the show’s scattered second season. Not only was it consistently entertaining, dark, and effective, it featured the long awaited reunion of Ryan (Kevin Bacon) and Joe (James Purefoy). Claire (Natalie Zea) revealed her survival to Joe and in perhaps the finest twist yet, Mike (Shawn Ashmore), this season’s breakout star, killed Lily Grey (Connie Nielsen) in cold blood as Ryan and Max watched in horror. It was a stunning and exceptionally well constructed moment.

Claire’s reveal to Joe, in a cleverly crafted coded message delivered by Carrie (Sprague Grayden), was a high point for Claire’s return, which has been a bit of a mixed bag for the series.

The Following, Ep.2.11, “Freedom”: Uneven episode leaves much to be desired
The Following, Season 2, Episode 11, “Freedom”

Written by Kevin Williamson

Directed by Liz Friedlander

Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox

“You tell them not to confuse the man I used to be with the man I am today”.

The beginning of The Following’s second season was ultimately a great improvement over the first season but over the last several episodes the show has fallen back into the issues that plagued the show the first time around. “Freedom”, like most of the later episodes of season 2 has its good moments, but it’s mostly a tedious affair.

By and large the season 2 has been quick moving, dark, strangely charming (thanks to James Purefoy), and twisted. It was pretty much everything that we wanted the first time around. And then somewhere between Lily Grey (Connie Nielsen) disappearing and Claire (Natalie Zea) returning the show messed up, mostly because it returned to...
