Why Winona Ryder Was Fired From Marlon Brando's The Freshman
Image
A month prior to the release of "Heathers," the American moviegoing public was warned that a couple of upstart film brats had concocted an unspeakably cruel dark comedy about the epidemic of teen suicide. The critics were generally impressed, but some worried that communities that had been traumatized by this tragedy in real life would picket theaters playing the movie (or worse). "Heathers" was toying with raw emotions, we were told. A storm was coming, one that could end the careers of director Michael Lehmann, screenwriter Daniel Waters, and the rising star duo of Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.

New World Pictures obviously wanted "Heathers" to be a sleeper hit, but the combination of the film's subject matter and the company's limited resources placed it at an immediate disadvantage. So, it toe-dipped with a 35-screen opening on March 31, 1989. The movie's per-screen average was encouraging for an indie, but not the stuff of an ambitious expansion.

Josh Brolin Reveals His "Trepidation" Over 'The Goonies' Sequel
Image
"Goonies Never Say Die," but they also never tell lies. One of the original stars of The Goonies has shared their candid opinion on the 1985 cult classic getting a sequel, some forty years later. A follow-up film has been talked about for a while, but it wasn't until February this year that the project became official at Warner Bros. Josh Brolin, who starred in the first film as teenager Brandon "Brand" Walsh, has admitted that he has a few reservations about the long-awaited follow-up, but, as he points out, there are valid reasons behind his "trepidation."

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his much-anticipated horror outing (which has a terrifyingly perfect Rt score), Brolin revealed mixed feelings about The Goonies 2. The actor shared his enthusiasm over the adventure flick getting a sequel, but also expressed concerns about whether it could potentially ruin the perception of the original film.

Is ‘The Goonies 2’ Really Happening? Here’s What We Know
Image
Guys, grab your treasure maps and prep the booby traps, because The Goonies 2 is officially setting sail and it’s not a drill. Nearly four decades after the original cult classic debuted in 1985, Warner Bros. has greenlit a long-awaited sequel with Potsy Ponciroli tapped to write the script.

While there’s no director attached yet and plot details are still buried deeper than One-Eyed Willy’s loot, the names behind the scenes are enough to spark major excitement. But exciting news, Steven Spielberg is returning as producer alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, and Chris Columbus, who wrote the original screenplay, is back on board.

In case you somehow missed the cultural moment that was The Goonies, this classic followed a scrappy group of kids in coastal Oregon who stumbled upon a centuries-old treasure map and set out on a wildly dangerous, booby-trap-filled adventure.

Though...

Josh Brolin reveals his ‘trepidation’ over The Goonies sequel
Josh Brolin is uncertain about making a sequel to The Goonies because he’s concerned it might “taint” the original movie. While the 57-year-old actor - who starred in the 1985 adventure flick as Brandon ‘Brand’ Walsh - wants a follow-up to go ahead, Brolin admitted he was also apprehensive about a Goonies sequel because he doesn’t want to ruin the “memory” of the first film.Speaking about a Goonies sequel with Entertainment Tonight, he said: “I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great. The movie is received so well, generation after generation. “It's just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don't want to taint what my memory of it [is].”The Weapons star then joked about a possible plot for a Goonies sequel that would catch up with the gang when they’re much older.

'The Goonies' Sequel Gets Surprising Update From Original Stars
Image
For decades, fans of the beloved '80s cult classic, The Goonies, have hoped for a return to the treasure-hunting world of Mikey and his friends. That hope is finally becoming a reality after a sequel was officially confirmed early this year, timed perfectly to the film's 40th anniversary. Adding to the excitement, original creatives Chris Columbus (who wrote the original's script) and Steven Spielberg are confirmed to return as executive producers. While plot and casting details remain under tight wraps, the original cast recently reunited for a retrospective conversation with The Guardian, sharing a range of reactions about their potential involvement in the next chapter.

The interview featured three original stars, Joe Pantoliano, Sean Astin, and Kerri Green, as well as two crew members, director of photography Nick McLean, and camera operator Michael O’Shea. The group fondly reminisced about their extensive on-set experience and the movie's enduring legacy. However,...

The Goonies Cast Reunites After 40 Years and Reveal All They Know About Upcoming Sequel
Image
Goonies never say die! And for a long time, they never said "sequel" either. Now one is finally on its way... but the original cast haven't been told much about it.

Recently, the main members of the Goonies cast got together for a retrospective of the film with The Guardian. They all had a fun time reminiscing about their friendship and pranks on set, but the conversation inevitably turned to the sequel news. Nick McLean, the director of photography, was the first to ask a question that was surely on many fans' minds. "[Richard] Donner has died [in 2021], so who would direct it?"

Of course, Steven Spielberg would seem the obvious answer. But there's other things to consider... such as which members of the cast have actually been asked back. "They’ve been talking about sequels to this movie for years," said Joey Pantoliano. "Spielberg would say: 'They probably spent millions of...

'The Goonies' Sequel "Unlikely" to Include Original Cast Beyond "Cameos"
Image
"Goonies Never Say Die," but the original of The Gooniescast has spoken candidly about the long-anticipated sequel to Richard Donner's 1985 cult classic and, unfortunately, it might not be the news that fans want to hear. Goonies 2has been in development for a while, but Warner Bros. officially confirmed the sequel in February. There are no plot details as yet. However, those hoping for a reunion in the Goon Docks might be out of luck, as the cast say they are "unlikely" to have main roles in the film, but they could perhaps have "cameos."

The Guardian invited the original cast and crew of The Goonies to explore how their film has endured as a cult classic and to unpack their experiences from the set, forty years on from its release in theaters. As well as looking back, the group were also quizzed on the future of the franchise, now...

The ‘Goonies’ Cast Reveals How the Set Devolved Into A Prank War
Image
Goonies never say die, nor do they say “uncle.”

This Saturday will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies, and the now-grown stars of the series still have the on-set antics from the landmark film’s production fresh in their minds. Before America fell in love with the group of friends who set out on a quest to find long-lost pirate treasure and save their homes from foreclosure, the cast of The Goonies became real-life pals with all the real-life rowdiness, wrestling and pranking that comes with being a bunch of kids given free rein to improvise and raise hell on a Hollywood set.

Hell, even the adults of the Goonies team joined in on the antics, as many cast and crew members from the film discussed in a recent conversation with The Guardian. According to them, director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg...

The Goonies: Every Main Character, Ranked
Image
Between movies about Christmas presents you shouldn't feed after midnight and aliens that need to make a phone call, the 1980s were rife with family films that became iconic in their own right, one in particular being the Richard Donner-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced adventure movie, "The Goonies." Released in 1985, this now-treasured, er, treasure hunt launched the careers of a handful of stars, including Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan. You must know the story by now, and if you don't, then, well, boy, was your childhood lacking. Anyway, "The Goonies" follows the titular band of kids as they find a treasure map and are swept off on an adventure searching for a pirate ship that could hold enough "rich stuff" to prevent their homes from being flattened for a newly-approved golf course.

While Donner's film has been homaged many times over, it's also...

Ke Huy Quan on ‘Love Hurts’ and Being #1 on the Call Sheet After a 20-Year Absence: ‘There’s a Lot of Catching Up to Do’
Image
Ke Huy Quan may have one of the best Cinderella stories in Hollywood history. After rising to fame in the mid-1980s as a child actor in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “The Goonies,” Quan decided to step away from acting in the early ’90s, feeling disillusioned by the lack of non-stereotypical roles for Asian Americans. For decades, he found steady work as an assistant director and fight coordinator, but secretly harbored dreams of eventually returning to working in front of the camera.

In 2022, Quan burst back onto the scene as Waymond Wang, the affable husband of Michelle Yeoh’s disgruntled laundromat owner Evelyn, in the A24 multiverse film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — a performance that earned him, among many other accolades, the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, Quan has played a key role opposite Tom Hiddleston in the second season of Marvel...

Ke Huy Quan Took Lessons on Leading a Set From Jamie Lee Curtis for His Star Turn in ‘Love Hurts’
Image
Nearly two years after Ke Huy Quan won an Oscar for his supporting role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, he is back on the big screen in his first leading man role.

Quan stars in Universal’s Love Hurts as Marvin Gable, a successful realtor whose past as a violent hitman comes back to haunt him. He initially turned down the romantic action comedy several times, admitting at the film‘s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, “I didn’t see myself as Marvin Gable because he’s the leading man and he’s No. 1 and he’s the action star. When I was younger, I wanted to be him, but because I didn’t get the chance I thought I wasn’t right for it.”

A conversation with Steven Spielberg — the two worked together on 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom — convinced him to take the chance and be No.

Josh Brolin Says Nepotism Made It More Challenging to Prove Himself as a Young Actor During ‘The Goonies’ Audition

A teenage Josh Brolin quickly got humbled by Steven Spielberg while filming 1985’s The Goonies.

The actor, who’s now 56, recently looked back at his early acting days on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s Literally! With Rob Lowe, including his starring role as Brand Walsh in the beloved film, directed by Richard Donner.

“I think Goonies was quite an accident,” Brolin recalled. “I went in there, I’ve been told, they pulled the Brolin thing, ‘Are you [James] Brolin’s kid? You want to be an actor, huh?’ So instead of that nepotistic thing, they looked at me and were like, ‘Oh yeah? So act.'”

The Avengers star set out to prove himself as a serious actor, putting his head down in the books and hoping to learn as much as possible.

“I studied,” he said. “I got [Konstantin] Stanislavski books, [Jerzy] Grotowski…and Antonin Artaud and the Theatre of Cruelty.

After many years of rumors and false starts, The Goonies' long-awaited sequel may finally be on a positive development track. Richard Donner's 1985 classic saw a group of kids uncover the treasure map of a long-lost pirate captain, setting them on a quest to find it while avoiding the grip of a ruthless crime family. As Deadline reported on the shifting strategies of Warner Bros. for the 2025 calendar, the outlet reported that the studio seeks to fall back once more on several proven franchises alongside its filmmaker-driven projects. 5 movies to watch if you love Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Image
As the latest Star Wars TV show, Skeleton Crew, comes to an end, you might be feeling nostalgic for the 1980s. The series takes a lot of inspiration from movies from this decade and re-purposes them to fit into the galaxy far, far away. 'The Goonies' is Coming to Max
Image
The Goonies Richard Donners beloved teen adventure from 1985 is landing on streaming service Max sooner than you can jump from a ship like a swashbuckling pirate. The film will start streaming on the platform on December 1, according to a press release from parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.

Produced by Steven Spielberg through his company, Amblin, The Goonies was directed by Donner, who was returning to the industry after serving audiences with the widely panned comedy, The Toy. In 1985, he also released Ladyhawke, a passion project he had been trying to make for years, but The Goonies was much more prominent. Based on a story by Spielberg, and written by Chris Columbus (after the young writer proved his worth with Gremlins), The Goonies is a 1980s movie that perfectly captures the storytelling style of a filmmaker who didnt have to sit in the directors chair to let audiences know that he was involved in the project.

Josh Brolin Recalls Why Steven Spielberg Told Him “Just Act” On ‘Goonies’ Set: “He Was Right”
Image
Nearly 40 years later, Josh Brolin still remembers Steven Spielberg‘s advice from the set of The Goonies.

Recounting the 1985 film as “probably the greatest experience of my life,” the Oscar nominee revealed what the producer told him on the set of the Richard Donner-helmed adventure comedy.

“I think [my character] Brandon is freaking out, and the tunnels represent the inside of his mother’s womb, and he’s trying to cut that umbilical cord,” he explained to People of his character analysis.

Spielberg had a more straightforward approach to the script, which he developed with writer Chris Columbus. “He looked at me, and he goes, ‘Yeah, just act. Just say what’s on the page.’ He wasn’t being an a—hole, he was right,” said Brolin.

The role of sweatband-donning big brother Brandon ultimately became Brolin’s breakout role, years before his acclaimed performances in No Country for Old Men...

16-Year-Old Josh Brolin Tried to Make His ‘Goonies’ Character Super Deep; Then Steven Spielberg Told Him: ‘Just Act. Just Say What’s on the Page’
Image
Josh Brolin was 16 years old when he landed a role in “The Goonies.” He played Brandon “Brand” Walsh, a high-school jock and the older brother of Sean Astin’s Mikey. Speaking to People magazine ahead of the release of his memoir, “From Under the Truck,” Brolin remembered Steven Spielberg shutting down his super-intellectual approach for the teenage character.

“I think [my character] Brandon is freaking out, and the tunnels represent the inside of his mother’s womb, and he’s trying to cut that umbilical cord,” Brolin remembered pitching to Spielberg, who promptly disregarded such a take.

“He looked at me, and he goes, ‘Yeah, just act. Just say what’s on the page,'” Brolin said. “He wasn’t being an asshole, he was right.”

Brolin went on to call his “Goonies” role “probably the greatest experience of my life,” adding: “That was the moment at 16 years old which never should have happened.

Martha Plimpton & Corey Feldman Shut Down ‘The Goonies 2’ Rumors
Image
Although Goonies never say die, there are few other words to describe the hopes for a potential sequel.

Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton, who starred together in Steven Spielberg‘s The Goonies (1985), recently responded to reports that a sequel to the beloved movie is in the works with the original cast expected to return.

“2’Sday, Is #GOONIES2 Real?! EVERY1 Is Asking…I Can Officially Tell U 100% No! I Hav No Info That A Sequel Is In The Worx,” wrote Feldman on X, promoting the long-awaited premiere of his 2004 film The Birthday.

Plimpton also shot down the news while using the opportunity to engage fans in their civic duty. “People, there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one ‘attached,’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real,” she shared in a post on Instagram. “What Is real is Check Your Registration And Vote!!!!”

No, a Goonies sequel isn't in the works, but Sean Astin seems like he wants one

The Goonies is a 1985 adventure comedy about a bunch of kids trying to save their homes from foreclosure; they succeed after an unlikely series of events involving pirate gold, organized crime, and of course, friendship. The movie stars the likes of Sean Astin (who went on to be Sam in The Lord of the Rings), Josh Brolin (who went on to be Thanos in the MCU), Ke Huy Quan (who won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once), Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green and Martha Plimpton. The cast have agreed in the past that a sequel seems pretty much inevitable, but it hasn't happened yet...or has it?

No!...I think. The Sun spread a rumor earlier this month that the cast were reuniting for sequel all these years later, and cast members are now denying it in the strongest terms...while at least one of them pulls for it to happen.

Original Goonies Stars Shoot Down Recent Sequel Rumors
Image
Recent rumors of The Goonies 2 happening next year are, in fact, just that: rumors. Thats according to original stars Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman, who say they have no knowledge that a sequel to the beloved 1985 classic is in the works at any film studio. A report from The Sun earlier this month suggested that a sequel to The Goonies was slated to begin production next year for a 2026 release, but thats not even remotely accurate.

Plimpton, who portrayed Stephanie Steinbrenner in the Richard Donner film, took to Instagram to dispel the rumors, saying that no one is attached to the supposed sequel, and Steven Spielberg is definitely not directing it. What is real, she says, is the upcoming presidential election, for which she urged people to check their voter registration.

‘The Goonies 2’ Is ‘Not Real,’ Says Cast Member Martha Plimpton Amid Rumors: ‘There’s No Script, No One Attached and Spielberg Is Not Directing’
Image
Sad news for fans of “The Goonies” as a viral report claiming a sequel to Richard Donner’s 1985 classic is in development is not true. At least not at this time. The Sun claimed earlier this month that “The Goonies 2” would be filmed next summer with many of the original cast returning, but actors such as Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton members shut down the report.

“People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one ‘attached,'” Plimpton wrote on Instagram. “Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real. What Is real is Check Your Registration And Vote!!!!”

Feldman added in a post on X (formerly twitter) that he had “no information” whatsoever that a sequel was in development.

It appears one would have to go back to 2014 for the last time there was serious buzz about “The Goonies 2” being developed. Variety reported at the time that...

Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan in The Goonies (1985)
Pinch of salt time – ‘The Goonies’ sequel finally greenlit?
Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan in The Goonies (1985)
According to numerous reports in UK tabloids, the greenlight has been given for a sequel to the 1980s classic The Goonies.

Considering this has been on the cards for many years in Tinseltown, we like to take this news with a pinch of salt. However, according to The S*n and ‘its sources’, “The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow-up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.”

“The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ knows they have to get it totally right.

“Major stars will likely come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless.”

If the story is true, production is likely to commence next summer for a 2026/2027 release.

For our part, we recently spoke to Joe Pantoliano about the idea of a Goonies sequel, and how the original film has endured. His answer is below, at the time-stamped link.

This Goonies Never Got a Sequel, but the Franchise Could Still Return
Image
The lasting popularity of The Goonies has resulted in massive profits through rentals, streaming, and merchandise sales. A sequel to The Goonies faces obstacles due to outdated character portrayals and the challenges of bringing back the original cast. While a sequel may be inevitable, Spielberg's high standards and the risk of disappointing fans could prevent its development.

Is there a bigger cult classic among 35-to-50-year-olds than Richard Donner's 1985 film The Goonies? Go to any revivalist rock concert, and you'll undoubtedly see one or two "Goonies Never Say Die" shirts in the crowd. Crack a joke about Slick Shoes or Chester Copperpot to your local barista, and you'll likely get a solid laugh. Name your fantasy football team the Truffle Shuffle, and everyone in your league will get the reference. Back in the '80s, The Goonies made a cool $125 million at the box office, but the rental...

Sean Astin Recalls His Favorite Moment on 'The Goonies'
Image
Before he was Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings or Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger in Rudy, Sean Astin broke onto the film scene in 1985 with his feature film debut, The Goonies. Playing the leader of the titular group of kids, he spearheaded an adventure including a young Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Corey Feldman, and recent Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan among others to find the ancient pirate treasure of One-Eyed Willy while facing danger from a crime family and a property development company. Astin reflected on the film during a panel hosted by Collider's Arezou Amin at Fan Expo in San Francisco when he was asked about his favorite moment while filming. While he found the project as a whole to be memorable, he recalled the interactions with the late director Richard Donner that were burned into his mind forever.

How Jimmy Kimmel, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and a Donkey Saved the Oscars
Image
Now this was a damn good Oscar Night.

The 95th Academy Awards show sure helped dispel the bad odor of the past few years. Watching the In Memoriam interlude last year, as a cheerleader squad honored dead people by singing “Spirit in the Sky,” I said aloud, “This show can’t possibly get any worse.” But saying this on Oscar Night is like a Mel Brooks movie where someone says, “At least it’s not raining.” Reader, it got worse. But this year was the zippiest, most fun Oscar bash in ages.
