‘Extra’ Defends Billy Bush After Audio Leak Of Sexual Remark About Kendall Jenner
Image
Several years after his infamous lewd conversation with Donald Trump for Access Hollywood, Billy Bush was caught on tape making a sexual comment about Kendall Jenner during a recent taping of Extra.

The Daily Beast reported Friday that it had obtained audio from an Oct. 31 Extra taping where Bush jokes with staffers about Jenner’s Toy Story-inspired Halloween costume. After asking someone for the name of her character, to which he was informed that she was dressed as Jessie the cowgirl, he says: “Kendall goes as Jessie and, believe me, there were a lot of woodies.”

The comment didn’t make it into the segment that aired on Halloween. While the Extra host did comment on Jenner’s costume in the final segment, he only went as far as to say, “it’s going to be hard to see Toy Story the same way ever again.”

In a statement to Deadline,...

Image
Extra, read all about it: Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey is leaving Extra after 22 years.

Gregorisch-Dempsey served as the syndicated show’s senior executive producer. She had been working remotely from Florida during the pandemic, but opted to leave the show at the end of the season in August rather than return to the Los Angeles office.

Theresa Coffino and Jeremy Spiegel will continue as executive producers, and Gregorisch-Dempsey will help with the transition.

“I’m proud to be the longest-running executive producer of any entertainment show in America, but it’s now time to move on,” Gregorisch-Dempsey said in a statement.

During her two-decade run, Extra was nominated eight times for Outstanding Entertainment News Program at the Daytime Emmy Awards and won twice.

The show is currently hosted by Billy Bush.

The Daily Mail was first to report Dempsey’s departure.

Lifetime Sets ‘I Was Lorena Bobbitt’ Film And Return Of ‘Smart Justice’ With Elizabeth Smart- TCA
Lifetime has greenlit Ripped from the Headlines true-crime film, I Was Lorena Bobbitt, and the return of the series Smart Justice, hosted by Elizabeth Smart.

Lorena Bobbitt became a household name and made tabloid headlines when, after alleging years of abuse by her husband, she cut off his penis with a knife in 1993. Now, nearly 30 years later, she tells her story for the first time with Lifetime. The fully authorized film, in which Bobbitt serves as an executive producer, follows her journey from an immigrant bride to a battered wife into an unlikely media sensation. I Am Lorena Bobbitt also documents her ultimately devoting her life to advocating for other abused women.

Produced by Cineflix International, executive producers are Bobbitt, Andy Streitfeld, Jeff Vanderwal and Charles Tremayne. I Was Lorena Bobbitt is written by Barbara Nance and will be directed by Danishka Esterhazy. Casting is underway on the movie series,...

Lifetime Greenlights ‘I Was Lorena Bobbit’ Biopic and Elizabeth Smart Series ‘Smart Justice’
Lifetime is bringing more true-crime to primetime. The network has commissioned six “Smart Justice” specials with Elizabeth Smart to serve as companion docs for its “Ripped from the Headlines” true-crime movie slate.

In each “Smart Justice” special, Smart — the woman who became famous for escaping from her abductors after being kidnapped at the age of 14 — will analyze the details of the real-life case presented in each movie.

Two other projects greenlit from the headlines: the four-hour documentary “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein,” and a new authorized biopic “I Was Lorena Bobbitt” — based on the sensationalized ’90s slashing. Bobbit will serve as an executive producer on her own biopic.

Here is the description for “I Was Lorena Bobbit.”

“Lorena Bobbitt became a household name and made tabloid headlines when after years of abuse by her husband, she cut off his penis with a knife in 1993. Now nearly 30 years later, Lorena tells her story,...

‘Extra,’ 3 Other Shows Renewed In Fox-Warner Deal Cutting Show-End Ad Breaks
In a syndication deal with a novel twist, Fox and Warner Bros. have reached multi-year renewals for Extra, TMZ, TMZ Live and The Real, with new formatting that eliminates the commercial breaks at the ends of each show.

The hope is that by adjusting the timing of ad breaks — in a way that preserves the net ad load but avoids awkward cutaways at the end of a programming block — both business partners will see more viewer retention. The final 90 seconds to two minutes of the block will be programming, with efforts under way to have one show toss to the other, a common practice in cable TV.

Jack Abernethy, CEO, Fox Television Stations, told Deadline in an interview that the move emulates a shift he helped steer in his previous role at Fox overseeing the launch of Fox News Channel in the mid-1990s. At that time, cable news incumbent...

Billy Bush
Billy Bush Will Host ‘Extra Extra’
Billy Bush
Billy Bush will return to entertainment reporting as the anchor of a the syndicated Warner Brothers magazine show “Extra Extra,”marking his return to the format after leaving NBC under a cloud.

Bush was discovered on an old 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape laughing at vulgar remarks Donald Trump made about sexually assaulting women. Controversy around the tape cost Bush a gig as a co-anchor of the 9 a.m. hour of NBC’s “Today.”

“We all have to be able to evolve as we grow,” Bush told People in an interview. “The guy that left the scene in 2016 was already a changed person but I had the opportunity to grow up a little bit. Facing adversity in some way is good. And I feel I’ll be better at my job than I ever was. This is my next step.” “Extra Extra” is slated to air on some of Fox’s top owned-and-operated stations.

TCA: Mike Fleiss Defends 'H8R' From Critics
Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline's coverage of TCA. The critics took out their verbal blades at an afternoon TCA panel hyping the new CW reality show H8R that goes to great lengths to bring "celebrities" together with those who trash talk about them on the Internet. The early episodes will feature the likes of Snooki from Jersey Shore. The biggest names participating in the series so far are Eva Longoria and Leah Remini. Critics peppered exec producers Mike Fleiss and Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey and exec producer/host Mario Lopez with questions about who would watch the famous go to great lengths to convert their biggest non-fans into supporters. One questioner wondered whether viewers would eventually see an episode where President Obama comes face to face with a Tea Party member. But perhaps the most interesting aspect of the panel was the fact that Fleiss, producer of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette,...

Official: Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to TV as The CW picks up 'Ringer'
Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries (2009)
She’s back: Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to TV next season as the star of Ringer, a thriller developed for CBS but punted over to The CW.

Sources say CBS brass liked the script and loved the idea of casting Gellar, but once they saw the pilot it didn’t feel on brand for the network — and luckily the company has a sister network at The CW (that just so happens to be built partly upon the foundation of another network, The WB, where Gellar reigned as high priestess for years as the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer...

CW To Pick Up New Reality Series 'H8R' That Pairs Celebrities With Their Haters
Exclusive: I hear the CW is picking up to series H8R, an one-hour reality project from Warner Horizon, which pairs people with celebrities they absolutely detest. Additionally, I hear that the series pickup deal for the Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring mystery drama Ringer at the CW is now done. The network is expected to unveil both series at its upfront presentation on Thursday. Mario Lopez hosts H8R, in which celebrities confront their biggest haters and try to convince them that their animosity is misdirected. The CW first ordered a pilot for the project, which featured reality stars Snooki and Kim Kardashian. The pilot has been red-hot at the CW. The network for years has been looking for a new big, loud reality series to join America's Next Top Model, and I hear the feeling internally is that this might be it. H8R also represents some Time Warner...
