Netflix Renews 'Long Story Short' Despite Season One Not Being Out Yet
Image
Show renewals are hard to get nowadays. Several factors influence a series' chances of growth. Many networks and streamers look for high audience viewership, how much the show gains traction in the media, especially on social apps, the financial side (how costly it is to make the show), etc. Whatever doesn't yield a return on its investment gets the "doomed" canceled tag. Yet, there are times a show hears the sweet sounds of renewal, even before season 1 becomes available. Netflixjust made the rare decision to renew Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg's upcoming animated comedy, Long Story Short, weeks before its users can stream the debut season.

It seems like the streamer believes it'll be love at first sight with Netflix users and the new animation, which is set to premiere on August 22, 2025. According to The Hollywood Reporter, season 1 will have 10 episodes, and they'll be thirty minutes long each. News of the...

The Neighborhood's Canceled Marty And Malcolm Spin-Off Explained
Image
Broadcast television is in the middle of a major surge, especially over on CBS, where a bunch of United States viewers have been treated to hits like "Elsbeth" and the new version of "Matlock." Streaming has brought a wealth of choice, but the general cost of maintaining a bunch of subscriptions, and the relative ease of turning on the TV for predictable programming, has seen some people flocking back to the big four networks. In spite of this renewed interest in broadcast television from people who might have cut the cord last decade, CBS has been putting a bunch of shows out to pasture, and "The Neighborhood," starring Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, was one of the unlucky victims this year. If that wasn't bad enough, a planned spin-off for "The Neighborhood," focusing on the characters Marty and Malcolm, also got the boot recently.

CBS decided to let go...

A Casting Vet on Hollywood’s Infuriating Embrace of Influencers and the Challenges of Starting Over
Image
“We’ve decided to go in a different direction.”

It was a line Tess Sanchez uttered often in her job as a high-powered casting director, first at the WB and later at Fox; then, in the fall of 2020, that same phrase was used on her as her boss revealed the network was doing away with her position, ending a 20-year career over Zoom. Sanchez detailed all of it in her recently published collection of essays, appropriately titled We’re Going in a Different Direction, which she discussed with moderator Ali Wentworth, herself an author as well as an actress, producer, podcaster and comedian, at East Hampton’s Hedges Inn in early July.

The lively talk kicked off a new, weekly conversation series that the inn — now under the stewardship of Andrew and Sarah Wetenhall, known for revitalizing The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach — is billing as “intimate gatherings featuring a...

The Mastermind Behind 'BoJack Horseman' Returns With a Delightfully Dysfunctional New Teaser
Image
Raphael Bob-Waksberg has a new, dysfunctional family to introduce with the first teaser for his upcoming animated series Long Story Short. Could The Bear Solve Its Problems With This One Crazy Trick?
Image
In the Season Four premiere of The Bear, a lot of steps are taken to contain the chaos that even Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) admits to Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) he doesn’t like. Cicero (Oliver Platt) and his business manager “Computer” (Brian Koppelman) let the chefs, and general manager Sugar (Abby Elliott) know exactly what their financial situation is: The Bear has precisely two months of runway to start turning a profit; a 1,440-minute countdown clock may not decrease anyone’s stress about it, but at least it’s making expectations starkly clear.

Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) has hired the front-of-house staff from Ever, the restaurant where he did his apprenticeship back in Season Two; they’re establishing new kitchen practices to smooth the process. These are fine first steps, but I’m not seeing the one I think could make the greatest difference in the shortest time: Scream Jar.

Bold strategies, surprising omissions, and Wtf oddities revealed in 2025 Emmy ballots
Image
Voting for the 2025 Emmys officially opened today, and Gold Derby has spotted several intriguing strategies, omissions, and oddities in the ballots, which are available to view on the Television Academy website.

When it comes to the writing and directing categories, a popular strategy is to submit as few options as possible, so as not to split the vote. (Remember how Succession would only submit a single episode in writing each year? It won that race four seasons in a row.) That's why we're so surprised to see ABC's boat-themed medical drama Doctor Odyssey flooding the ballot 11 different times for Best Drama Directing. If the show can't pinpoint one or two stand-out directors out of Jen Lynch, Our Lady J, Tessa Blake, Paris Barclay, Crystle Roberson Dorsey, Brad Buecker, Millicent Shelton, Michael Medico, Steven Canals, Maggie Kiley, and John J. Gray, how are the voters supposed to?

Last year, Slow Horses...

‘BoJack Horseman’ Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg on Ditching Satire for Sincerity in ‘Long Story Short’
Image
Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the man broadly credited with reinventing animation with his 6-season, three-time Emmy-nominated Netflix hit Bojack Horseman, is back with more family trauma, but no taking animals, in Long Story Short.

The new Netflix animated series, which Bob-Waksberg premiered at the Annecy international animation film festival on Thursday, follows the trials and tribulations, or as Bob-Waksberg puts it, the “small t traumas,” of the Schwoopers, a fairly ordinary Jewish family.

“On one hand, it is an animated family comedy like Bob’s Burgers or King of the Hill, that kind of show, we have two parents, three kids,” he said, speaking at Annecy ahead of the series’ world premiere. “But the way we’re telling stories is a little different, in that we’re traveling back and forth through time. Not by using a time machine, just in the way we’re telling stories. So in the first episode, we...

Raphael Bob-Waksberg on Life and Work Post-‘BoJack,’ His New Netflix Series, and Its Call to Industry Action: ‘We Don’t Want AI Art’
Image
“Long Story Short” cuts to the point. Coming from “BoJack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, it’s without the parody dressing “BoJack Horseman” presents, instead getting closer to the heart of human conflict and comedy.

Screening at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival this week, the first episode of the “BoJack” creator’s latest animated Netflix series sees Avi (Ben Feldman) bring his new girlfriend Jennifer (Abbi Jacobson) to meet his family ahead of his little brother Yoshi’s (Max Greenfield) Bat Mitzvah. It drowns you in overlapping dialogue, religious anxiety, and eccentric family members, immediately distancing itself from Waksberg’s past work. The series then follows the Jewish family through the years, their hopes, and disappointments.

“I was thinking about family, time, and identity,” Waksberg told IndieWire at Annecy. “In the writers room, I wrote those up on a board, like this is what the show is about. More specifically,...

Kate Hudson and Mindy Kaling shoot for Emmys recognition for ‘Running Point’ at the Lakers training facility
Image
Comedy heavyweights gathered at the Lakers training facility to celebrate Netflix’s breakout hit Running Point. The series, starring Kate Hudson and loosely inspired by the life of Lakers president Jeanie Buss, quickly built a dedicated fan base following its February release. A second season is already confirmed and Friday night’s FYC panel made one thing clear: Running Point has earned its place among the genre’s elite.

The talent behind the camera is just as impressive as the talent onscreen. Co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling partnered with her former The Mindy Project colleagues Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen to make the series happen, which she joked during the panel was “fine” and “like a B-minus.” Barinholtz and Stassen backed Kaling up on her Hulu comedy, which ended its run in 2017, and did the same on Running Point. “When you’re on [set] and you’re there since 6 a.

‘The Simpsons’ Parody of ‘Smiling Friends’ Isn’t Going Over Well With Fans
Image
In this week’s season finale of The Simpsons, Bart and Lisa’s interest in The Itchy & Scratchy Show begins to wane, prompting them to seek out other potential TV replacements. Lisa gets really into Quirk Girl, a not-so-subtle New Girl spoof that actually features the voices of stars Max Greenfield and Zooey Deschanel, who “made it okay for cute girls to be pretty.”

Bart, on the other hand, is watching a new animated series called Screaming Friends, which is full of gratingly loud oddball cartoon characters. “The jokes are great, but what I love is the storytelling,” Bart tells Marge.

Screaming Friends is clearly a parody of Smiling Friends, the beloved, and intensely bizarre Adult Swim series. But fans of the show aren’t exactly thrilled about the apparently uncomplimentary send-up.

Most of the complaints seemed to suggest that the overly-simplistic pseudo-reference was an example of the show being out-of-touch,...

‘New Girl’ Stars Reunite on This Weekend’s ‘The Simpsons’
Image
Beloved Fox sitcom New Girl is getting a belated spoof from one of its network brethren, and two of the show's stars are along for the ride. Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield will lend their voices to this week's episode of The Simpsons. "Estranger Things," the thirty-sixth season finale of the undying animated series, will air this Sunday night on Fox and stream on Hulu the next day. Entertainment Weekly has a first look at Deschanel and Greenfield's appearances on the series.

In the clip, Lisa (Yeardley Smith) is watching the sitcom Quirk Girl on her tablet; she describes it as being "from the golden age of television: 2013." A thinly-veiled parody of New Girl, it stars a Deschanel lookalike who, Lisa gushes, "made it okay for cute girls to be pretty." Greenfield voices her roommate, the slick ladies' man Schultz, who's just borrowed a dog to help him pick up women.

New Girl Stars Reunite to Spoof Their Own Sitcom in The Simpsons Season 36 Finale Sneak Peek
Image
Jess and Schmidt from New Girl are reuniting - kind of. For seven seasons, Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield played Jess Day and Schmidt on the Emmy-nominated Fox series New Girl. To say that Jess’s character was quirky may be an understatement. The show begins with a newly dumped Jess, a young teacher, moving into a loft with three guys, and antics ensue. New Girl ran for seven seasons from 2011 to 2018.

Now, Deschanel and Greenfield (The Neighborhood) are essentially reprising their New Girl roles, but with a twist, in the Season 36 finale of The Simpsons, airing on May 18. Per Entertainment Weekly, Deschanel and Greenfield are parodying their characters in the episode. A clip of the scene can be watched below.

‘Man on the Inside’: Mike Schur Is Ready to Keep It Running Forever After Season 2 Got Approved by Netflix
Image
Michael Schur’s latest project, Man on the Inside, starring the ever-charming Ted Danson, is officially coming back for a second season, and fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. But before Netflix gave it the green light, the team behind the show had some very understandable hesitation. After all, Netflix has a bit of a reputation for ghosting its own shows just when viewers start getting emotionally invested.

And no one can’t blame them for being cautious, especially when one’s working with a high-concept comedy that’s not exactly built for instant algorithmic gratification. Shows like this take time to bloom. But even with the streaming red flags waving, there was one major reason to have hope, Michael Schur.

Known for turning offbeat premises into gold,, Schur reportedly had a roadmap laid out, not just for season one, but beyond. That kind of vision is rare,...

“Well, what’s the point?”: Mike Schur’s Update on His Most Intense Work Sounds Much Better Than ‘The Office’ Reboot
Image
What do you do after creating some of the greatest comedies of all time, The Office, Parks and Rec, and The Good Place? If you’re Mike Schur, you take a wild left turn into heart-tugging mystery territory with A Man on the Inside.

This isn’t what Schur usually does, it has got a Ted Danson undercover in a retirement home. Based on an Oscar-nominated documentary, the show mixes Schur’s signature traits with a surprisingly sharp twist. And guess what? He says this might be his most intense project yet, and honestly, it sounds way more exciting than an Office reboot.

Why Michael Schur took on A Man on the Inside!

Michael Schur isn’t exactly hurting for hits. He’s one of the minds behind The Office, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Good Place, with a comedy resume so stacked it could probably qualify for its own Emmy category.
