Image
Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman’s production, set against the backdrop of the Civil War, The Gray House, has received a major update, with the reports revealing that the historical television drama is expected to get a release date soon.

Starring Mary-Louise Parker alongside an ensemble cast, the limited series focuses on the female espionage agents operating during the American Civil War. The series premiered at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival on June 14, 2024; however, an official release date has not yet been revealed.

And a new update from TV Line has teased that a major announcement about the show is expected sometime this summer. “Producers tell Inside Line that filming has definitely wrapped on the mini, and you should expect a major announcement this summer,” stated the recent update on the historical drama.

Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman miniseries finally gets promising update one year later
Image
Things have definitely been moving very slow for Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman-produced miniseries The Gray House. The show was first announced to be in the works back in 2022, and there really hasn't been a ton of information about the production and its status. Now, we finally have a promising update.

A little over a year ago in April 2024, Variety shared that the historical drama would be opening the Monte-Carlo Television Festival that year, which took place in June. Then a few months after that in September, Deadline revealed that some big names in the music industry have contributed to the soundtrack. We'll get to that in a moment. Though since then, almost a year later, any updates including a release date or even streaming home have not been shared. Until now.

The TV Show That Gave Taylor Sheridan His First Role Should’ve Let Him Direct the Reboot—Now It’s Canceled
Image
Walker, Texas Ranger gave Taylor Sheridan his first on-screen role, and looking back, it’s outlandish that he didn’t get a shot at directing the reboot. The original series, created by Leslie Greif and Paul Haggis, aired from 1993 to 2001 on CBS with Chuck Norris in the lead. Inspired by Lone Wolf McQuade, the show ran for eight seasons and spawned a 2005 TV movie. It’s since aired in over 100 countries and found a second life in syndication.

Sheridan appeared in a Season 3 episode titled War Zone, years before becoming the mind behind Yellowstone. Now, the reboot is canceled, without ever tapping Ts’ creative firepower.

Walker, Texas Ranger Launched Taylor Sheridan – The Reboot Deserved His Return, But It Got Canceled Too Soon

Before Yellowstone and the Taylor Sheridan TV empire, there was Walker, Texas Ranger. And tucked inside its Season 3 episode War Zone was Sheridan’s first-ever acting role – a...

Alexander Rodnyansky Returns To Directing With New War Doc ‘Notes Of A True Criminal’; Ar Content Chief Outlines Current Productions & Teases New Slate
Image
Exclusive: Alexander Rodnyansky is a self-confessed “man of many lives” but now, three years after being forced to flee his home in Moscow for being a vocal critic against the war in Ukraine, the Kyiv-born producer is returning to his documentary roots. The Leviathan and Loveless producer and former founder of Ukraine’s first indie TV network 1+1, has nearly wrapped filming a new documentary, Notes of a True Criminal, which he produced and directed.

“It’s called that because I’m a criminal now,” quips Rodnyansky, referring to the eight-and-a-half year sentencing in absentia he received from a Moscow court last year for spreading anti-war sentiments.

Coming from a long line of documentarians – his grandfather was a documentary filmmaker, and his great aunt was pioneering Soviet filmmaker Esfir Shub (The Fall of the Romanov Dynasty)– it’s perhaps fitting that the Oscar-nominated producer is returning to the documentary space...

Image
Exclusive: Rhona Mitra has landed the female lead opposite Joel Kinnaman in Debriefing the President (wt), the four-hour miniseries recently greenlighted at TNT, which comes as part of the network’s renewed focus on premium event programming.

Joel Kinnaman Series ‘Debriefing The President’ Racks Up Sales: Drama Follows CIA Operative Who Interrogates Saddam Hussein
Image
Exclusive: Debriefing The President, the series based on John Nixon’s revealing book of the same name, has sold to a raft of territories. The limited series stars Joel Kinnaman as CIA analyst Nixon, who became the first American to positively identify and interrogate Saddam Hussein in the wake of the ill-fated invasion of Iraq.

The series has been acquired by Canadian streamer Crave. It has also struck a chord in Scandinavia; Nrk has snagged rights for Norway, Svt for Sweden, Yle for Finland and Dr for Denmark, marking a quartet of deals with major pubcasters.

Deadline revealed earlier this year that the drama will play on TNT in the U.S. It is made by Ar Content and StoryFirst. Image
Exclusive: The musical stars are coming out for Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman’s The Gray House.

Leslie Greif opened the series’ playlist exclusively for Deadline and there is serious star wattage in there, including an original song performed by country music legend Willie Nelson, which closes the series. Elsewhere, Shania Twain, Killer Mike and Yolanda Adams are among those to feature, and Jon Bon Jovi co-writes one of the show’s songs.

“My idea was, instead of having one [end] title song, I’m going to have eight different songs by Grammy-winning artists and in different genres of music, which are written for our show and are going to tell a story of that episode,” said Greif, who exec produces and wrote the script with Darrell Fetty, and John Sayles.

Wbd Ramps Up TNT Investment With ‘The Librarians: The Next Chapter,’ CIA Miniseries
Image
After taking a $9.1 billion write-down on its linear networks business, in part due to the company’s loss of NBA rights, Warner Bros. Discovery is ramping up its investment in programming for TNT.

The cable network has greenlit “Debriefing the President” (working title), a four-hour miniseries about CIA analyst John Nixon’s 2003 interrogation of Saddam Hussein, in which he learned about the potential consequences of the invasion, the humanitarian horrors and geopolitical turbulences that would follow Saddam’s deposing.

The series is produced by Ar Content and Big Dreams Entertainment for TNT. Alexander Rodnyansky, Joel Kinnaman, Stuart Manashil, Michael Kupisk, Peter Gerwe, Shelley Browning, and Leslie Greif serve as EPs, while Cristi Bostanescu and Eric Tomosunas serve as producers and Krzysztof Skonieczny directs.

TNT has also acquired “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” a sequel to supernatural adventure series “The Librarians.” The project was initially set to lead The CW’s 2024-25 fall season.

TNT Greenlights CIA Miniseries As Network Eyes Potential Scripted Ramp-Up Post Write-Down & Restructuring
Image
Exclusive: TNT has greenlighted four-hour miniseries Debriefing the President (working title), about the 2003 interrogation of deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, to air in 2025. This marks the cable network’s first original scripted order since the 2022 Warner Bros.-Discovery merger. The news comes two weeks after Wbd took a $9.1 billion write-down on its cable assets and a week after the company announced that Kathleen Finch will be retiring as chairman and CEO of U.S. Networks, with Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO, adding the linear networks to her purview.

TNT has no current original scripted shows after all remaining ones at the time of the merger have been canceled. The plan to bring back original scripted programming to the network had been put in motion by Finch, including the greenlight for Debriefing the President, which comes from independent production companies Ar Content and Big Dreams Entertainment.

‘The Gray House’ Actors Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Vereen Sound the Trump Alarm: ‘We Could Have a Convicted Felon as Our President’
Image
“The Gray House” actors Mary-Louise Parker and Ben Vereen want people to wake up. Especially before the November election.

“I think they aren’t as horrified as they should be. We could potentially have a convicted felon as our President! There is a real lack of alarm,” Parker tells Variety at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival after the premiere of the Civil War series.

“Such ugliness was unleashed in our country by our previous President. It just spread, like some kind of virus. It gave people a sense of agency about their ignorance, their racism. It’s hard.”

“It’s frightening! People are not upset. There is a whole generation of ‘I don’t care,’” adds Vereen.

“There are scenes in this series that look just like the Jan. 6 [Capitol attack], don’t they. All of a sudden, it comes back into focus. You go: ‘Wow. It is happening again, now.’”

Morgan Freeman Talks ‘The Gray House,’ Rips Into Black History Month: ‘My History Is American History’
Image
Morgan Freeman isn’t a fan of Black History Month.

“I detest it. The mere idea of it. You are going to give me the shortest month in a year? And you are going to celebrate ‘my’ history?! This whole idea makes my teeth itch. It’s not right,” he tells Variety.

“My history is American history. It’s the one thing in this world I am interested in, beyond making money, having a good time and getting enough sleep.”

Having exec produced Civil War series “The Gray House” alongside Lori McCreary through Revelations Entertainment, the past is very much on Freeman’s mind.

“If you don’t know your past, if you don’t remember it, you are bound to repeat it,” he says. During election year, this statement seems particularly poignant.

“Do you know this song? ‘To everything, there is a season.’ It really, really works in showbusiness.

Chuck Norris Delivers A Top Kick To CBS In ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ Profits Battle
Image
CBS is unlikely to be uttering the words “thank you Chuck Norris” anytime soon after handing over some Walker, Texas Ranger dough to the octogenarian action star.

More than five years after Norris sued the network and the studio for more than $30 million over profits from the eight seasons-plus of the procedural, lawyers and spokespeople for both sides say “the parties have resolved the dispute.”

CBS and Norris’ attorney John V. Berlinski are being as tight-lipped about the confidential settlement as the laconic Sergeant Cordell Walker himself, Norris pocketed a healthy sum in the end, I hear.

Sony Pictures TV was originally a defendant in the January 31, 2018-filed breach-of-contract lawsuit, but the studio was dismissed from the matter last year.

Litigated though the darkest days of the pandemic and with arbitration, the initial complaint from Norris’ Top Kick Productions alleged that Sony and CBS engaged in “self-dealing” that “cost Top...

Kevin Costner & Morgan Freeman-Produced Civil War Spy Series ‘The Gray House’ Lands SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement
Image
The Gray House, a Civil War spy drama series that is being produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, is the latest high-profile project to land an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA.

The project managed to secure an interim agreement – by which the producers agree to the terms of the guild’s last counter-offer to the AMPTP – despite having international distribution through Paramount Global.

The actors guild has now handed out over 60 interim agreements to movies and series since the walkout earlier this month. Apple TV+’s Tehran became the most high-profile series to land one, after films such as The Watchers, which has involvement from Warner Bros. Discovery’s New Line, were also added to the list as well as Glenn Close’s The Summer Book and A24 films Mother Mary and I Dream Of Unicorns.

Paramount Global Content Distribution, which is run by Dan Cohen, is set to distribute six-part series The Gray House,...

As Writers Strike Looms, Reality Producers Optimistic About Possible Unscripted Boom
Image
A potential writers strike would be incredibly harmful for many in Hollywood, but there’s one sector of the entertainment industry that is quietly optimistic that it could lead to a boom for them: the unscripted television makers.

As history has shown, there’s also precedent for an uptick — from the 1988 strike that led to the creation of Fox’s Cops and the 2007-08 strike, which bolstered unscripted shows such as The Amazing Race and Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Paul Haggis Fined Additional 2.5 Million in Punitive Damages in Civil Rape Trial
Image
A New York jury on Monday unanimously ordered Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis to pay 2.5 million in punitive damages after finding him liable for raping a film publicist.

A civil rape lawsuit was filed against the filmmaker by former film publicist Haleigh Breest, who alleges the filmmaker forced her to perform oral sex on him and then raped her after they attended a movie premiere in 2013. On Friday, the jury unanimously found Haggis liable on all three counts of rape and sexual abuse. They awarded the plaintiff at least 7.5 million in compensatory damages. That brings Haggis’s total damages to 10 million.

In the hallway outside of the court room, Haggis said he planned to appeal the verdict.

“I’ve spent all the money I have at my disposal,” he told reporters. “I’ve gutted my pension plan. I’ve lived on loans in order to pay for this case in a very naive belief in justice.

‘The Offer’ Video: See Justin Chambers Lead ‘Godfather’ Cast Gathering As Marlon Brando
Image
Exclusive: The Corleone family finally has come together for a real Italian dinner. In this clip from the May 12 episode of The Offer on Paramount+, Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler) greets the cast of The Godfather for their first gathering before shooting commences on the film.

Much to Coppola’s delight, the actors immediately settle into their roles. Marlon Brando (Justin Chambers) sits at the head of the table and insists that his wife be served first. He then gives a speech thanking the group for attending his birthday meal.

The Offer is based on producer Albert S. Ruddy’s experience making the 1972 film that Coppola directed and adapted with Mario Puzo from Puzo’s bestselling novel. Paramount Plus has released the official trailer for “The Offer,” the upcoming drama miniseries that chronicles the making of “The Godfather.”

Set in the early 1970s, “The Offer” stars Miles Teller as Albert S. In addition to Teller, Gallo, Fogler and Ribisi, the series will also star Matthew Goode, Juno Temple, Burn Gorman and Colin Hanks.

The trailer shows Teller as Ruddy as he assembles the creative team for the film and battles with producers, only for the involvement of the mob to cause the...

‘The Offer’ Trailer: Go Behind the Scenes of Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’ in Paramount+ Limited Series
Image
Paramount+ is trying to make an “Offer” no one can refuse.

The 10-episode limited series, “The Offer,” about the true story behind making the “The Godfather,” arrives just in time for the half-century anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s Academy Award-winning epic. The show debuts April 28.

Dan Fogler plays then-studio-newcomer director Coppola (hot off indie “The Rain People”), who is tasked with bringing Mario Puzo’s novel to life for Paramount Pictures. The studio wanted “someone who understands Italians” to direct the feature, and while Coppola’s Italian roots made him a prime choice to helm the feature, it was clear that traditional gangster movies were “dead” by the early 1970s. A big-budget gamble was a high risk for Paramount at the time.

But it was up to Coppola and his Italian-American vision to save the picture. From including scenes that focus on family and heritage instead of mafia members,...

‘The Offer': Studio Execs and Mobsters Fight Over ‘The Godfather’ in Trailer for Paramount+ Series (Video)
Giovanni Ribisi, Dan Fogler, Patrick Gallo, Matthew Goode, Juno Temple, and Miles Teller in The Offer (2022)
It’s the 1970s in Los Angeles and some shady studio guys are trying to get a movie made. But some dangerous criminals are rather put off by the concept and would like it not to happen. Will they manage to work things out? That’s question posed by the trailer for the upcoming Paramount+ miniseries “The Offer,” which you can watch now.

Of course, by now you know the movie in question was “The Godfather” and that this show is based on things that actually happened, so of course they managed to work it out. The how of that is the focus of the 10-episode event, however. Expect to see a lot of 1970s Los Angeles sleaze, 1970s New York grime, and plenty of that Hollywood magic, baby. Also, since Robert Evans is a character, probably lots of cocaine.

“The Offer” stars Miles Teller as Albert S. Ruddy, Matthew Goode as Robert Evans,...
