Saddled with a head-scratcher of a title and a limp front cover endorsement, Spiderhole is predestined to be a bottom-shelf item. Yet Daniel Simpson's film displays talent behind the camera almost from the on-set, smartly investing in unnerving set design that improves on a well-worn plot serving mostly to get our young adult victims into a single setting. Loosely identified artists Zoe (Amy Noble), Molly (Emma Griffiths Malin), Toby (George Maguire) and Luke (Reuben-Henry Biggs) cruise around London for a place to squat. Familiar with their rights once settled down and looking to score a nice new home, the girls and boys luck out on a sizeable and seemingly abandoned mansion. Spiderhole might as well be pigeonholing itself in a genre of torture porn. Just how many viewers can really emphasize with the gang of four mates? Molly (Emma Griffiths Malin), Zoe (Amy Noble), Toby (George Maguire), and Luke (Reuben-Henry Biggs) think squatting is an exciting adventure. And not enough time is spent developing the reasons on why they decided to be homeless. Their need for independence from family is mentioned and that already signals their downfall.

Spiderhole is an Irish shot horror film, which released on DVD in the United Kingdom March 21st. The term spiderhole, in nature, is a trap used by arachnids to lure unwary prey for feeding. In director Daniel Simpson's film, an abandoned house in London is used in much the same way, to lure unsuspecting victims. Directed by Daniel Simpson, Spiderhole is about four homeless art students in London who start squatting in an abandoned building. Obviously they aren't the only ones who happen to be in the house. The film stars Amy Noble, Emma Griffiths Malin, George Maguire and Reuben-Henry Biggs.

Double lesbian motherhood proves to be no less messed up a family set up than any other here, although it does give two great actresses meaty roles, and open up a fresh set of complications when their teenage children track down their biological father (Ruffalo). Sexual politics play a distant second to character dramedy here, and even if it gets mushy, it's a funny, observant study of real, flawed people.
