David Carradine and Simone Griffeth in Death Race 2000 (1975)
Death Race 2000 and Rollerball | What they got right about the 21st century
David Carradine and Simone Griffeth in Death Race 2000 (1975)
In 1975, the sci-fi movies Death Race 2000 and Rollerball depicted 21st century futures that still feel relevant 50 years later.

In the middle of the 1970s, a group of filmmakers peered into the future and saw a hellscape of cruelty and violence. Released within months of each other in 1975, Death Race 2000 and Rollerball imagine 21st century dystopias where bloodthirsty competitions play out on TV.

The films are similar in genre and theme, but stylistically poles apart; one is blackly comic, the other grim-faced; one is pluckily low-budget, the other grand and expensive-looking. All the same, Death Race 2000 and Rollerball both offer a fascinating glimpse of the 21st century that, for all the 70s hairstyles and clothing, looks strangely recognisable.

Death Race 2000 came out first, but that was because producer Roger Corman, the wily old rascal, caught wind of Rollerball being in production and hurriedly commissioned a dystopian sports film of his own.

Sylvester Stallone and the Rest of the cast of 'Death Race 2000' Broke a Few Laws During Filming
Image
Modern audiences may be familiar with Paul W. S. Anderson’s Death Race, starring Jason Statham and Tyrese Gibson. In the high-adrenaline film, the head of a privatized prison earns millions by broadcasting "Death Race," a vehicular combat racing series where dangerous inmates battle each other in weaponized and armored cars with the goal of winning their freedom. Among the racers is a masked driver named Frankenstein (Statham). However, the story isn’t entirely original.

10 Cheesiest '70s Movies, Ranked
Image
The 1970s was a huge decade for cinema. In 1975, Steven Spielberg's Jaws hit theaters in June after being delayed for several months. Originally, Jaws was supposed to be a Christmas release, but due to complications with production (like the mechanical shark constantly breaking), the film was delayed. Jaws wasn't expected to do well due to the summer release date, but Jaws sold so many tickets that it single-handedly created the summer blockbuster phenomenon.

Jaws isn't the only iconic film to come out of the 1970s, though. The '70s gave birth to Halloween's (1978) Michael Myers and Alien's (1979) xenomorph. This decade saw rapid advancement in what could be accomplished for convincing movies. It also had an abundance of cheesy movies that were as iconic as they were cringey. Movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) go down in cinema history as some of the funniest and cheesiest movies ever made.

Ellen Pompeo in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
How ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Said Goodbye to Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith
Ellen Pompeo in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Meredith Grey performed her “last” surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital during the winter premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” on Thursday. But Ellen Pompeo’s final episode as a series regular felt more like a “see you later,” leaving plenty of questions unanswered and the door open for her character’s return.

ABC promoted the episode, titled “I’ll Follow the Sun,” as Meredith’s big farewell to Seattle. Previews for the hour paid homage to the many traumatic moments, goodbyes, accomplishments and near-death experiences the doctor has procured across 19 seasons and over 400 episodes, but the hour itself played more like real life — with a dose of romantic comedy frustration.

The installment began as Meredith and her children arrived at the hospital for her last day on the job, in the aftermath of her longtime Seattle home sustaining damage in a fire. In a conversation with love interest Dr. Nick Marsh...

Why Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Is a Not-So-Secret Reboot
Image
Since Grey’s Anatomy first premiered in 2005, it has aired 19 seasons, 406 episodes, and birthed 3 spinoffs. Naturally the show has had to adapt as cast members come and go throughout the years. This sometimes makes it hard to recall what exactly went on in season 1. Although who can forget Addison Montgomery (then Shepherd) saying the iconic line, “I’m Addison Shepherd … and you must be the woman who’s been screwing my husband.”

With every new intern class that Grey’s introduces viewers to, it always throws in a few Easter eggs to remind fans what made them fall in love with the show in the first place. However, it seems season 19 wanted to take this even further. Grey’s Anatomy season 19 launches a soft reboot that allows the series to ground itself in its season 1 roots. If the “begin again” tagline of the season 19 poster wasn’t a giveaway, season 19 throws back...

Which Grey's Anatomy Intern Are You, According To Your Zodiac?
Image
A few weeks into season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy, the new class of interns has already proved itself as one of the best ones to ever appear on the medical dram. Consisting of Simone Griffith, Lucas Adams. Benson Kwan, Mika Yasuda, and Jules Millin, the team has been allocated as much screen time as the Grey Sloan veterans.

Given how well-developed the interns have been over the years, many viewers will agree that they are able to relate to certain characters more than others due to the fact that they have similar mannerisms and traits. It's also likely that, because of this, they have figured out which zodiac sign fits them best.

Aries – Lucas Adams

Like Derek’s nephew Lucas, Aries members are courageous, competitive, and self-driven. However, some of their weaknesses include recklessness, impatience, and intolerance.

Self-belief is written all over Lucas. Although he never got good grades like the...

Grey's Anatomy: Jesse Williams to Guest Star & Direct During Season 19
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Despite big names leaving Grey's Anatomy, they always pop back up.

The same can be said for Jesse Williams, who has closed a deal to return to the ABC medical drama for Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Episode 5.

Williams will also direct the episode, airing November 3, and titled "When I Get to the Border."

Deadline first reported the news.

This marks the second time Williams has returned since exiting as a series regular in early 2021.

The star returned for the Grey's Anatomy Season 18 finale earlier this year on ABC alongside longtime co-star Sarah Drew, who plays April Kepner.

However, Deadline reports that Drew will not be a part of the upcoming episode.

The highly anticipated hour features Meredith on a trip to Boston, where she catches up with her longtime friend.

It's unclear what the purpose of the trip to Boston will be, but it will be nice to see these two share the screen again.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Krista Vernoff On Pilot-Like Season 19 Premiere, Derek-Related Twist, Meredith’s Future, Roe v Wade & More
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 premiere on Thursday.

“Everything Has Changed” is the title of Grey’s Anatomy‘s Season 19 premiere, which aired tonight. Yet, a lot of it also felt very familiar. In a throwback to Grey’s Anatomy‘s pilot, the season opener, set six months after the Season 18 finale, chronicled the first day of Grey Sloan’s new interns, played by Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho and Midori Francis, just like Episode 101 did with Meredith and her fellow wide-eyed rookie interns.

In another likely nod to the Grey’s Anatomy pilot — which famously started with Meredith having a one-night stand with Patrick Dempsey’s Derek — one of the new interns, Jules (Kane), also accidentally had slept with an attending, Link, on the eve of her starting the program. The revelation sent Link on a wild Hr goose chase, with Meredith deadpanning,...

Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Premiere Recap: The New Class Scrubs In — Plus, a Surprising Derek Tie Revealed

Full of “Aww!”-some throwbacks to the past and tantalizing harbingers of the future, Thursday’s ultra-zippy Grey’s Anatomy got the long-running ABC drama’s Season 19 off to a pretty fantastic start. We were introduced to the five new surgical residents who are pumping fresh blood into Grey Sloan. (More on them here.) And we had dropped on our heads two surprises — one of them delightfully Derek-based. And if you keep reading, we’ll go...

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Marla Gibbs to Recur as New Intern Simone’s Grandmother
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Grey’s Anatomy is gearing up for its 19th season, set to return to ABC on Thursday, October 6, and with it comes a new group of surgical interns, whom viewers will be getting to know over the course of the season. One of those new interns is Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd), who lives in Seattle. The show will follow Simone both at work and at home, as fans will meet her family, including her grandmother, Joyce Ward, who, according to Deadline, will be played by The Jeffersons alum Marla Gibbs. The TV veteran will appear in a multi-episode guest arc. The introduction of Joyce is likely to provide more insight into Simone’s life and her history with Grey Sloan. According to the official character description, Simone has a painful personal history with the hospital and never wanted to work there due to these traumatic memories. She’s also referred to as “funny,...

Legendary Producer Roger Corman Is Developing Death Race 2050
Roger Corman, the legendary film producer who has produced over 400 projects in his career, will be producing a reboot of Death Race 2000 called Death Race 2050 for Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, and it will star Malcolm McDowell.

The film is described in the press released as being “an outrageous action-packed film and reboot of the original Death Race 2000.” The story will revolve around a horde of automotive gladiators who earn points for killing pedestrians as well as their fellow drivers.

Corman was a producer on all of the previous Death Race films. The first one was released in 1975 and starred David Carradine, Simone Griffeth, and a young Sylvester Stallone. Paul W.S. Anderson remade the film in 2008, and that was followed by a couple of direct to DVD prequels, Death Race 2: Frankenstein Lives in 2011 and Death Race 3: Inferno in 2013.

For the most part, I’ve enjoyed the...

Sliff Interview: Stace England of Screen Syndicate – A Tribute to Roberta Collins
Screen Syndicate, a side project of Southern Illinois-based Americana band Stace England and the Salt Kings, explores the fascinating history of Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and the exploitation films made by the company in the 1970s. The life of actress Roberta Collins — a Hollywood story of sadly unfulfilled promise — is the vehicle used to navigate the period. Collins lit up the screen in films like The Big Doll House, Women In Cages and Death Race 2000. But Collins was unable to break out of the B-movie grind, playing minor roles in increasingly poor productions before finally exiting the business. She died in obscurity in 2008. Screen Syndicate combines original songs, film clips, trailers, and other material into a unique live-music experience that pays tribute to Collins. The band has performed at numerous film festivals in the U.S. and Europe — appearing twice at Sliff — with shows about pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and Cairo,...

Streaming for Your Pleasure: Movies to See Before the Summer
Article by Dan Clark of Movie Revolt

We are about to embark on what will hopefully be a rather fun summer of movies. With that in mind I focused the second installment of Streaming for Pleasure on some films you should see before this summer hits. Having a familiarity with an actor or director’s career can often shine some light on what their future projects may have in store. Also it can help garner more motivation to see a film you would have otherwise avoided. Curious what the Avengers might be like? What Tom Hardy has in store for the character of Bain? Well check out some of these films and they just might answer some of your questions.

"Death Race 2" Will Not Be Seen in Theaters!
"Death Race" 2, the prequel to Universal's 2008 Jason Statham film, is shooting in South Africa right now, but it's going straight to DVD under the studios DVD Originals banner.

When I interviewed the 2008 "Death Race" cast and director Paul W.S. Anderson at Comic Con (check my complete interviews right here), Anderson revealed to me some plans for a sequel.

Apparently, those plans have been scrapped for a straight-to-dvd prequel.

Sean Bean is set to star opposite Luke Goss ("Hellboy 2: The Golden Army") along with Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo and Frederick Koehler. Anderson is producing and Roel Reine is directing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "the prequel is serving as the origin story for the character named Frankenstein, a convicted cop killer (Goss) in a declining American empire where a racing reality show is about to be born in the country's corrupt prison system."

So Statham, Joan Allen, and Ian McShane are not returning.

An Original Feature: 8 Remakes That Should Never Have Happened – Part 1
Despite popular opinion, remakes are not a new phenomenon, they’ve been around pretty much as long as cinema, and have given us some of the finest movies in cinematic history.

Unfortunately, they’ve also given us some real steaming piles of turd, particularly in recent years. Take a look at my own list of the “8 Remakes That Should Never Have Happened” and see for yourselves:

#1 – Death Race 2000 (1975)/Death Race (2008)

The Original: A cult 1975 action film based on the short story “The Rider” by Ib Melchior, the film starred David Carradine, Simone Griffeth and Sylvester Stallone and was directed by Paul Bartel. The film told the story of a fascist America, that keeps the people satisfied through a stream of gory gladiatorial entertainment, which includes the bloody spectacle the Transcontinental Road Race, depicted as a symbol of American values and way of life.
