The BBC has confirmed that hit school drama Waterloo Road will return to BBC One and iPlayer from 2nd January 2024.

The BBC has confirmed that school drama Waterloo Road will return for its next series, the third since its relaunch, on Tuesday 2nd January. Eight new episodes will be available as a full boxset on BBC iPlayer from 6am, though it will also air weekly on BBC One from 8pm that night.

Set and filmed in Greater Manchester, Waterloo Road returned to BBC One earlier this year and was hugely successful.

The plot saw Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk play young couple James and Hayley who, upon deciding that they don’t want to be apart for Christmas after all, get on each other’s respective trains and find themselves at the others’ family home. Fuelled by farcical misunderstandings, the film is a solid slice of festive fun. It’s no Planes, Trains & Automobiles of course, but then again, what is.

Andy Mundy-Castle’s documentary White Nanny, Black Child was among the winners at the British Urban Film Festival, which ran until October 20, and was held outside London for the first time in its history, at Halifax’s Crossley Gallery.

White Nanny, Black Child premiered at Sheffield Doc Fest and explores an untold part of UK history when over 70,000 children from West African families, principally Nigerian, were unofficially fostered without regulation into white British families between the 1950s and 1990s. Natasha Dack of Tigerlily Productions co-produces with Doc Hearts.

Warner Bros. Discovery Europe has revealed that it will air every match from this year’s U.S. Open on Eurosport and Discovery+ across 45 markets.

As tennis fans gear up for the final Grand Slam, taking place at Flushing Meadows in New York City, they will be able to stream the tournament live and on-demand. In addition, viewers in the Nordics will have access to free-to-air coverage centered on players representing Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

If some movies now seem designed to be consumed on phones, this one demands so little attention, for such scant rewards, you could probably watch it while vacuuming or doing yoga without missing anything important.

Not that first-time feature director Toby Meakins or his cast do slipshod work. Netflix's White Lines is an exciting new crime thriller that follows Zoe Walker's journey from Manchester to Ibiza, where she investigates the death of her brother Axel Collins. The key characters of White Lines are all struggling to heal from their traumas of twenty years prior. Before Zoe’s father Clint was killed in a road accident, he had kidnapped Oriol Calafat, believing him to have been Axel’s killer. When Oriol escaped his bonds, he attacked Clint, causing the accident that killed him. Oriol phoned Boxer, who rescued him, sent him home and reported the crash.

There are few more tedious experiences than being sober around people who are off their heads. If you’re not also buzzing your tits off, the life epiphanies of dilated-pupil, jaw-clenched, hug-fetishist ravers resemble nothing so much as the unmusical cawing of an especially stupid crow.

Not that it’s put Netflix off setting new 10-part drama White Lines in the heart of the Ibizan rave scene. That’s because Netflix knows that if a show provides enough topless women, slo-mo shagging and Sunday supplement-worthy beach villas, audiences will tolerate anything – up to and including loved-up 90s kids talking about how house music is going to change the world.

On one level, White Lines is about the conflict between youthful freedom and adult responsibility, hedonism versus restraint, instinct versus intellect. On another, much louder level, it’s about tits and coke and abs and Laurence Fox being chased by a hallucinated gorilla.

With an ensemble cast of renowned British names, including Sheridan Smith, Robert Glenister, Eddie Marsan, David Threlfall and Angela Griffin, Isolation Stories — which starts airing Monday evening on U.K. broadcaster ITV — looks at first glance like the sort of premium TV drama that has been long in the making.

However, initially announced only in mid-April, the series has been put together in near record time — just a month from conception by Jeff Pope, who landed an Oscar nomination for co-writing 2014's Philomena and penned the Laurel and Hardy biopic Stan & Ollie, to transmission.

They say write what you know, and in Jeff Pope’s case, he knew coronavirus was an unwelcome intruder on his home. The BAFTA-winning producer of Stan & Ollie was laid low by the dastardly disease with his family, and although it was not so serious as to warrant a trip to hospital, it was profound enough to inspire Pope into making a drama about the experience.

His idea was simple: an anthology series of short stories about people coping with Covid-19 while being confined to their homes. The execution was far from simple, however, with the rulebook on writing, casting, filming and post-production ripped to shreds by strict social distancing measures. Oh, and there was the small complicating factor of having to rapidly deliver the series at the heart of lockdown so it didn’t lose any of its topical potency.
