Everything Sailor Moon Fans Need to Know About the Shojo Anime Movie Trilogy
Image
Sailor Moon helped build the magical girl genre from the ground up. Both the manga and anime inspired common tropes found in nearly every series that followed it. While these tropes were pretty new when Sailor Moon first came out, they’ve become standard for the genre. However, the trilogy of standalone Sailor Moon movies from the 90s took it to a whole other level.

The trilogy, each named after an arc in the show, are must-watches for longtime fans and newcomers to the series. Each of these movies can easily be a standalone from the other movies and the series, so new fans don't have to worry about messing up continuity. Plus, they fit snugly within the established Sailor Moon timeline, so fans who are more in the know can still appreciate how they expand on the universe’s lore.

February Will Be a Great Month for Old-School Sailor Moon Fans
Image
Throughout the 1990s, three now iconic Sailor Moon movies were released. While all three tie-in films to the beloved magical girl anime series have long been independently available to buy or rent through Amazon's Prime Video, they are currently excluded from larger, more traditional streamers like Netflix and Crunchyroll.

However, thanks to a new release from Viz Media, all three original Sailor Moon films will now be available in a single collection. "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Three Film Collection 1993-1995" will include Sailor Moon R The Movie, Sailor Moon S The Movie and Sailor Moon Supers The Movie, all on a single Blu-ray disc, which is currently available for preorder.

A Complete Cast and Character Guide for Sailor Moon
Image
Sailor Moon is the quintessential magical girl anime created by Naoko Takeuchi and published in Kodansha's shojo manga magazine. The series was immediately popular upon its 1992 release, and it still attracts new fans today who enjoy the original anime and manga alongside the current reboot Sailor Moon Crystal. Sailor Moon Crystal is a manga-loyal adaptation that has fewer filler episodes and more streamlined character arcs but the same central characters and plots.

The story of Sailor Moon follows the sweet and precocious protagonist Usagi Tsukino, who transforms into the intergalactic superhero Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon battles cosmic villains and eldritch horrors with the help of her fellow Sailor Senshi and Tuxedo Mask. With a sprawling cast of characters spread out across the franchise, it can get hard to keep track of everyone who is introduced. From the first season to Sailor Stars, here is every important character from the original Sailor Moon anime.

The Sailor Moon Movie Timeline, Explained
Image
The 1990s saw the skyrocketing popularity of Sailor Moon in the Western market. With the first season of Sailor Moon running from March 1992 through February 1993, Usagis story transfixed Western audiences. From her transformation to Sailor Moon, battles with the Sailor Guardians against the evil forces, and her dramatic love story with the Prince-Endymion-reincarnated Mamoru Chiba, Usagi tale made for a compelling narrative, especially for younger viewers.

Its popularity led to Sailor Moon movies to complement and expand upon the lore and adventures, doubling down on the massive success of the franchise. Three feature length movies were released during the 1990s, connected directly to the original anime series. When the Sailor Moon anime ended in 1997, its popularity never waned. This no doubt fueled the decision to green-light Sailor Moon Crystal, a new retelling of Sailor Moons story. Aligning more accurately with the original manga, the series cut back on the number...

Most Dramatic Villain Romances in Sailor Moon
Image
Sailor Moon is an epic magical girl anime with plenty of monster-of-the-week skirmishes, magical transformations, and devastating battles. Romance is the main engine of the story, though. It's Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion's forbidden love affair that launches the events of the series, and their love is a huge part of Usagi Tsukino's motivation.

Romance isn't only for the heroes in Sailor Moon, though. Many of the villains have their own love affairs. Some of the villain romances have redemptive qualities for the characters, and some of the romances are quite strange and even cruel. Either way, the stakes are high for a villain in love.

10 Things Sailor Moon Crystal Should Have Kept from the Original Anime
Image
Sailor Moon Crystal and its concluding movies, Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos, is a successful reboot because it's fairly loyal to Naoko Takeuchi's original manga series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. The '90s Sailor Moon anime has all the same major arcs from the original manga. However, the anime creators added plenty more content and changed some key details from the original story.

Some of the original anime's changes are questionable, like censoring the queerness in Kunzite and Zoisite's relationship and adding in a romance between Naru and Nephrite. There are some additions that were fun, though. Filler characters like Yuichiro and Fiore add to the story. Additional mini-arcs, like Minako's dating schemes, give a dose of whimsy to the story and explore character dynamics.

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in Hocus Pocus (1993)
Relive the Moment Bette Midler Dusted Off Her Winifred Sanderson Costume From Hocus Pocus
Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in Hocus Pocus (1993)
It seems like celebrities constantly try and outdo each other on Halloween every year, but nobody (and we mean nobody, not even costume queen Heidi Klum) can top what Bette Midler did in 2016. The legendary actress showed up at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City to suck the lives out of little children. Well, not really. Bette, who is the founder of the New York Restoration Project, was on hand to attend the organization's Hulaween Bash. She dusted off her broom to go as her beloved Hocus Pocus character Winifred Sanderson, making it seem like no time has passed since a virgin lit the black flame candle back in 1993. In addition to posing with fellow attendees Kathy Griffin and Marc Jacobs (yep, that's him in the bikini costume), Bette also linked up with her daughter, Sophie von Haselberg, and brought back some of Winifred's signature poses. And her costume...

Teen Mom's Amber and Gary Walk the Oscars Red Carpet?!
Hollywood Boulevard (1976)
Congratulations of sorts are in order for Teen Mom trainwrecks Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley, who have proven definitively that while stars really can be like us, it's not so easy to pull off the other way around. But that didn't stop the D-list reality duo from trying their hardest to join the A-list by getting all dolled up and strolling a pre-Oscars red carpet. Problem was, they did it not in front of the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, but at a movie theater in Hamilton, Ind. Even Kathy Griffin would think twice about accepting that invite. Though, in fairness, they did pull one bona fide star move… They remembered the little people. "They posed for pictures with fans...

The reaction to the California Supreme Court's decision on Tuesday to uphold the state's controversial Proposition 8 ban of same-sex marriage was swift and very loud. While proponents of the November proposition applauded the court's 6-1 vote upholding the ban, thousands of opponents took to the streets of West Hollywood on Tuesday afternoon to express their displeasure with the decision.

"It doesn't mean much — we have to start over, we have to start back with our grass-root campaigns and get the word out," Richard Chandler said, marching down San Vicente Boulevard in Los Angeles with fellow protesters, including his husband, whom he married on October 7 in San Francisco, just weeks before Prop 8 was passed. "More importantly, we need to...
