Robert Plant Talks Album, U.S. Tour With New Band Saving Grace: ‘They’ve Saved My Sanity’
Image
In February 2019, Robert Plant booked a trio of shows at tiny, off-the-radar theaters across England with a new band he dubbed Saving Grace. Each night they played an eclectic mix of covers like Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” Townes Van Zandt’s “Nothin,'” Patty Griffin’s “Standing,” and even a couple of Led Zeppelin songs largely utilizing acoustic instruments, including banjo and accordion.

“I did this basically to keep me away from the tedium between projects,” Plant tells Rolling Stone while chilling in a hotel room between shows in Lucca,...

‘The Bear’ Season 4 Soundtrack: From The Ronettes To Oasis
Image
FX’s The Bear Season 4 has been out for a week streaming on Hulu.

The series, which was renewed for a fifth season yesterday, has become known for its needle drops as well as its rotation of guest stars each season. While she didn’t have a song featured in Season 1, the show has come to include at least one Taylor Swift song since Season 2, because it wouldn’t be a heartfelt moment for Ebon Moss Bachrach’s Richie and his daughter without help from the songstress.

Season 2 of the show contained “Love Story” in the seventh episode, “Forks,” and Swift’s “Long Live” was featured in Season 3.

Find the full soundtrack to The Bear Season 4 — including songs from St. Vincent, Oasis, Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Bishop Briggs, The Ronettes, Pretenders and more.

Virgin River Season 6 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
Warning! Spoilers about Virgin River season 6, episode 10 ahead.

The soundtrack of Virgin River season 6 includes iconic songs and less prominent ones that fully capture the themes and atmosphere of the emotional drama romance. Taking off months after the two-part Christmas special that comprised the last two episodes of season 5, Virgin River season 6 kicked off in the midst of the planning for Mel and Jack’s wedding. The major event guaranteed small and bigger bumps in the road related to its organization and the bigger problems the joyful town of Virgin River’s characters found themselves facing, including illnesses, daring saves, problems with the law and budding relationships.

With Virgin River season 5 introducing the surprise of Mel’s biological father hailing from Virgin River, a major storyline in season 6 involved the two getting to know each other, and music played an important part because of Everett’s hobby and his unfinished song for Sarah,...

All the Songs in ‘Virgin River’ Season 6
Image
“Virgin River” is all about the ambiance. The cozy romance transports viewers to a tight-knit community tucked away in the scenic town of Virgin River, but the sounds are just as important as the sights in setting that scene. Especially in Season 6!

Netflix’s “Virgin River” always sets its scenes to a soundtrack full of folksy melodies and gentle acoustics, but Season 6 puts music front and center in the love story between Mel’s biological parents, which transports viewers back to Virgin River in the ’70s when her father was an aspiring musician. It even prominently features an original song by The Lumineers’ Wesley Schultz titled “This Heart of Mine.”

It’s a jam-packed soundtrack as usual, so if you’re trying to keep track of the needle drops, here’s a handy guide to all the songs in “Virgin River” Season 6.

An American Idol Contestant Sings ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ and Katy Perry Doesn’t Like It — Watch
Image
There’s a reason we would never advise someone to audition for American Idol using one of the judges’ own songs — it doesn’t always end well.

But that didn’t stop 22-year-old Madaí Chakell from attempting to soar where so many others before her have stumbled, performing “I Kissed a Girl” in front of Katy Perry herself. And while it wasn’t a total crash-and-burn moment, Katy was visibly confused by what she heard.

Billy Strings, Tyler Childers, and the War and Treaty Triumph at 2023 Americana Honors
Image
When Tyler Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards, he let loose with an acceptance speech for the ages, denying the very term “Americana” and pointedly declaring himself a country artist.

“As a man who identifies as a country music singer, I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothin’,” he said onstage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium that year. “It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers.”

Despite that sharply worded speech,...

Did Being The American Idol 2023 Runner-Up Help Or Hurt Megan Danielle’s Music Career?
Image
The promise of a vibrant and successful music career is definitely the draw of competition series like American Idol. Every year, tons of people audition and cross their fingers that they will win... and maybe get the opportunity to record an album (or five). Megan Danielle is no stranger to these types of shows. In fact, she was cast in The Voice season 18, but she didn't end up winning. She came much closer to reality TV victory when she was the runner-up in season 21 of American Idol.

Although Megan Danielle didn't win American Idol 2023 and that honor went to Iam Tongi, she still got very far and should be super proud of her accomplishments. But how does Megan Danielle really feel about her time on American Idol? Does she think that the competition series has given her a leg up and helped her stand out in the crowded music industry?...

The Best Jeff Beck Side Project Tracks and Deep Cuts
Image
Jeff Beck played his first gigs on a guitar he built himself, plugging in with local bands in the London suburbs from age 13, before honing his craft at Wimbledon School of Art, studying the artistry of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Beck mixed the virtuosity and speed Les Paul displayed on radio broadcasts, and the heaviness of even the most melodic Gene Vincent records into his own sound. Beck transformed The Yardbirds from blues purists to proto psychedelia pioneers before inventing hard rock on The Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 Truth album. A new Jeff Beck Group came out with Rough and Ready, infusing fluid jazz phrasings onto R&b ensemble rhythms.

It’s been said Pink Floyd considered asking Beck to join after Syd Barrett left. Beck turned down an invitation to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones for a project with Vanilla Fudge bassist and vocalist Tim Bogert,...

‘The Voice’ season 22 finale spotlight: Morgan Myles poised to earn coach Camila Cabello a rare first season win
Image
When the final five artists take the stage Monday and Tuesday night for “The Voice” season 22 finale, Morgan Myles will do so under the advisement of first-time coach Camila Cabello. Should Morgan win, it would be only the second time that a coach mentored an artist to win in their own first season. Kelly Clarkson was the first to achieve that feat on season 14 with Brynn Cartelli.

See Who deserves to win ‘The Voice’ season 22? Let your voice be heard! [Poll]

While the laurel of earning Camila a win is nothing to scoff at, Morgan winning would be an incredible feat for the artist that was not only the first performer in the Blind Auditions, but also the first four chair turn of the season. Morgan sang “Hallelujah” during that first impression and was so good that Camila jumped out of the gate with her only block to keep Morgan from joining Gwen Stefani‘s team.

Voice Live Playoffs Recap: Who Really Took Off When the Pressure Was On?
Image
Eight weeks into Season 22 of The Voice, NBC’s sing-off really came to life — at least in so far as it went live Monday for the Playoffs. All 16 remaining contestants performed in hopes of earning enough viewer votes to advance or so impressing Blake Shelton, John Legend, Gwen Stefani and/or Camila Cabello that their coach would save them or another coach would steal them during Tuesday’s results show.

Now, before we get to discussing the pivotal episode, I want to apologize in advance for my grading. Like the singing, it’s done live, in the moment, so all of my reactions are knee-jerk.

Rita Wilson interview: ‘I’ve exhausted the canon of warm, nurturing wives. Give me crazy!’
Image
There’s only one disappointment about Rita Wilson’s new album: she doesn’t rap. In March 2020, a week after her husband Tom Hanks sent shockwaves around the world by announcing the couple had come down with Covid, Wilson posted a video of herself in quarantine flawlessly rapping Naughty by Nature’s 1992 anthem “Hip Hop Hooray”. The clip has since racked up more than two million views on Instagram, earning praise from everyone from Kim Kardashian (“The best video Ever!!!!!!”) to Barack Obama. When news of this unlikely viral hit reached Naughty By Nature, the Grammy-winning trio released a remixed version of the single featuring Wilson on the mic to raise money for the MusiCares Covid-19 Relief Fund. Surely, then, the stage was set for Wilson to offer us her takes on Tupac and Nwa? She howls with laughter. “I think that’s my next project!” she jokes. “It’s funny,...

Goodbye Vlad: The Chicks Kill Putin at Bonnaroo 2022
Image
The mantra of the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, which returned to Manchester, Tennessee, this weekend after a forced two-year absence, is “radiate positivity.” For the group formerly known as the Dixie Chicks — queens of the scorched-earth, fiddle-and-banjo-tinged, stick-a-pin-in-your-voodoo-doll revenge-fantasy rallying call — those posi vibes came by way of killing Russian president Vladimir Putin in effigy. On Friday, the Chicks debuted as both the festival’s first-ever country and female-fronted headliner. And just like Earl, Vlad had to die.

Putin’s figurative demise came during a mid-set performance of...

Poison (1991)
Katie Crutchfield has always had a knack for noting subtle shifts in the weather. “I watch you anxiously/You paint it celestial, you paint it serene,” she sang over thrashing guitars on “Poison,” from 2015’s Ivy Tripp, making serenity sound like a death knell. On her latest album Saint Cloud, the 31-year-old songwriter trades in the indie-rock neurosis of her previous work for a mellower, twangy sound that nods towards her roots in Birmingham, Alabama. But her piercing observations have only grown sharper with time: “I have a gift, I’ve been told,...

This Week In Music: Billie Eilish Uproar, Justin Bieber Release, Umg Plans To Go Public
James at 16 (1977)
The Grammys and the Oscars are in the rear-view mirror, and South by Southwest is still a month away. That means the music industry gets to take a deep breath and contemplate the more important things in life, like whether a song is any good. One of the oldest axioms of the music business is, “It all starts with a song.” That was proved true this week with the reaction caused by the release of a new film’s theme, which caused people to immediately take sides.

This week in music:

Billie Eilish Bond Song – The theme for the forthcoming James Bond film, No Time To Die, has been released by pop music’s newest superstar and her producer brother. So far, it’s spawned more debate than that meme over gold dress versus blue dress. Those used to the soaring anthems spawned by Shirley Bassey thru Adele may not...

Tanya Tucker won two awards, Best Country Album for While I’m Livin’ and Best Country Song for “Bring My Flowers Now.”

“After almost 50 years in this business, after many dreams, it’s still unbelievable to me that I’d still have a few firsts left. After 14 trips, 14 nominations, this is the first win,” Tucker said upon accepting the trophy for Best Country Song, which she shared with her co-writers Phil and Tim Hanseroth,...

Lil Nas X
Nashville Songwriter Mercy Bell Embraces Dixie Chicks, Mantras on Her New Album
Lil Nas X
In many ways, 2019 was a remarkable year for country and country-adjacent performers who didn’t conform to traditions, in spite of a persistently tough radio environment for anyone not male, white, and straight. Lil Nas X, a gay black man, took over the world and confounded chart watchers with “Old Town Road,” a smash that worked just as well at Cma Fest as it did Coachella, while masked singer Orville Peck introduced the world to his queered spin on cowboy masculinity and sexuality. On a victory lap after a huge...

Tom Waits
Hear Joseph’s Comforting Cover of Tom Waits’ ‘Come On Up to the House’
Tom Waits
“Well, the moon is broken and the sky is cracked, come on up to the house,” sings Natalie Closner-Schepman, mixing weariness with comfort in her band Joseph’s stark but reassuring rendition of Tom Waits’ song of resolve. Originally appearing on Waits’ 1999 album Mule Variations, it’s the title track of a new tribute album to the songwriter, Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits.

“We made this recording with our longtime friend and collaborator Andrew Stonestreet. He sent over a few of his favorites as options and...

The Voice (2011)
The Voice Recap: Here, Chair and Everywhere — Which Singers Advanced on the Last Full Night of Blinds?
The Voice (2011)
There was a lot for us fans of The Voice to process going into Night 6 of the Blind Auditions. First of all, Nick Jonas taking a seat as a Season 18 coach. Big thumbs-up to that, no? I like Gwen Stefani as an artist quite a lot, but as a coach, she leaves something to be desired. And a little bit of her cooing over her “Blake-y” goes a long way.

Second, John Legend’s reluctance to turn his damn chair Monday night. He didn’t swivel for seven contestants in a row, among them Joana Martinez, whose lower register still...

The Voice Recap: Which Contestants Turned Heads — and Chairs — During Night 5 of the Blind Auditions?
Blake Shelton
With The Voice’s Season 17 Battles fast approaching — they start in the second half of the Monday, Oct. 14, episode — Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Gwen Stefani worked to complete their teams Monday. Looking over their rosters ahead of Night 5 of the Blind Auditions, I’d have given the edge to reigning champ John, whose sophomore-season lineup included three singers who really seemed to make an impression on the audience (Katie Kadan, Mendeleyev and Preston C. Howell). Of course, any of them could fall apart in the Battles. And new frontrunners could have emerged Monday. But did they? Let’s review the performances,...

Hear Patty Griffin Sing Tom Waits’ ‘Ruby’s Arms’ From New Tribute Album
Patty Griffin in Elizabethtown (2005)
Patty Griffin turns Tom Waits’ elegiac, cinematic “Ruby’s Arms” into a sparse, somehow even more heartbreaking piano ballad for a new compilation, Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits. She adds a minute to the runtime of the original song, which appeared on Waits’ 1980 album Heartattack and Vine, and allows her voice to ache all over the lyrics in a way that shows a new depth to the lyrics, contrasting Waits’ gruff original.

The tribute album, due out November 22nd, features covers of Waits’ song performed by women,...

This Week In Music: Bts, A$AP And Taylor Swift Fans All Have A Complaint
No one in music was happy this week, or so it seemed, as the best of intentions blew up in several faces in the industry. Bts fans claimed segregation, Taylor Swift fans screamed collusion, and A$AP Rocky fans lashed out at the Swedes over their decision to prosecute the street-brawling rapper.

Meanwhile, a few multi-million dollar deals were brewing, making the complaints seem like teapot tempests.

This week in music:

Rocking The Vote: Perhaps forgetting that Democrats And Republicans buy tickets, two music industry executive are planning to hold 46 concerts in key swing states to help the Democratic presidential nominee win in 2020. The series, “46 For 46,” was conceived by former music managers Kyle Frenette and Christopher Moon. The campaign is paid for by the bpoliticalPAC and has already enlisted Nathaniel Rateliff, Lissie, Bon Iver, Dashboard Confessional, Sylvan Esso, and Patty Griffin.

AI Music Moves Forward: Music made by artificial intelligence got a boost this week,...
