The Orville star and creator Seth MacFarlane shares an optimistic update about the show's future. The Orville: New Horizon, the sci-fi dramedy's third installment, debuted in June 2022 on Hulu. Even though The Orville season 3 finale does offer a sense of closure, a door is kept open to keep the story going.

More than three years after New Horizon wrapped, there haven't been any major developments on new episodes. The actors and crew have struck optimistic tones about the possibility when asked, but nothing has been confirmed. MacFarlane's recent remarks on The Orville season 4 could turn things around, though.

In an interview on Where Everybody Knows Your Namepodcast with Ted Danson, MacFarlane briefly shares that he still plans on doing The Orville season 4. The creator of Family Guy makes a larger point in the quote below, talking about how Hollywood has tended to favor pessimistic narratives over a more optimistic outlook.

When "American Dad!" first aired on Fox, "Family Guy" comparisons were inevitable, especially since both shows were created by Seth MacFarlane. "Family Guy" had been through the wringer, undergoing multiple cancellations, only to come back out on top. "American Dad!" felt like a test to see if MacFarlane could get lightning to strike twice with a different show that nonetheless had many of the same qualities as "Family Guy." That includes talking animals, and the early seasons had a tendency to lean into cutaway jokes that "Family Guy" had become synonymous with.

Over the years, "American Dad!" moved to TBS and then back over to Fox, changing its style of humor along the way. The show's less about making fun of current events and more about seeing just how depraved the Smith family can become with a significant decrease in random cutaways. Christopher Nolan has directed a series of successful projects in different genres, including superhero films, sci-fi, and biographies. The latter turned out to be his most successful release thanks to Oppenheimer.

The biopic was part of a greater cultural phenomenon in 2023, alongside Barbie, and it ended the year as the third highest-grossing title. Discovery’s cable networks business, late last week it was announced that “American Dad!” would be ending its ten season run on the once well regarded “superstation” and is poised for a return to its former home on Fox as part of the broadcast network’s Animation Domination programming block.

The show, created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, began its life on Fox before moving to TBS in 2014, where it has run for 10 seasons and more than 200 episodes.

The show’s current two-season order with TBS, which dates back to 2021, will end with Monday’s season finale. Should the deal with Fox go through, it would likely be for a multi-season order, allowing the series to have a relatively seamless transition to delivering new episodes at its once and possibly future home.
